A lot of the changes are good ones. Like, if you get sick, our healthcare professionals have the technology to pretty much cure what ails you. Our smartphones enable us to access data of all kinds, take photos, and stay in touch with each other. We have cars that are reliable, comfortable and yet have unreal horsepower. But if you’re like me, some changes, well, not so good. For example, all this talk lately to get rid of a certain historic symbol that has played an important role in the development of our great nation. Here’s a symbol that for decades has represented the core values of a group of folks that has been now relegated to the musty trashbin of museums by the naysayers. Yes, boys and girls, I am speaking of our beloved PentaStar. Yeah, yeah, yeah, I’ve ranted about this one before. Sometimes I think I need to grow a mullet (if only I could) like that ranting editor of MCG. Let’s look at the history on the birth of the PentaStar, created by Robert Stanley, at the Lippincott & Margulies design firm in 1962. In his own words, “We wanted something simple, a classic, dynamic but stable shape for a mark that would lend itself to a highly designed, styled product,” Stanley said in a blog in 2007. “What that meant, basically, was a classic geometric form.” What was really cool was how that small badge quietly appeared on the passenger side of our cars, down low by the rocker just behind the front wheel well. Yet that humble location was offset by its color: it was gold, representing the understated sense of pride by the builders. And Mopar extended that sense of pride to the dealerships, too. If you wanted to buy a Mopar, or get yours serviced, going to a 5-Star dealership meant something. In recent years, Ma Mopar has been taken over by furriners. Two European, and a Canadian company have owned the Chrysler Corporation. Mercedes dropped the PentaStar while they owned the company, but it was brought back by the Canadian Cerebus outfit. Now, it’s Fiat in the drivers seat, and what do we get for a logo? Three letters: FCA. I ain’t putting that on my fender. I’ve done some mods to my ‘14 Challenger. A short-shift kit, an oil catch can, polished sill plates. But the one that makes me smile? The little gold six dollar PentaStar on the passenger side, just above the rocker and behind the front wheel well. -Bob Gough, Y’r ‘umble Ed’tr The Newsletter of the Mopar Club/San Diego www.moparclubsandiego.org JULY 2015 Showtime!
