NOV 2013
goin’ for the
dream...
So, let’s say you’re a drag race fan
from your early teenage
years. And let’s say your
first new car is a 1967 383
big block/4 speed Barracuda Formula S. And let’s
say in 1968 you’re smitten
by the havoc wreaked upon
the NHRA factory Super
Stock and Eliminator races
in Hemi cars led by the likes
of Ronnie Sox and Herb McCandless in ‘68 SS/A Hemi
Barracudas.
Well, that’s the early
story of Clubmember
Marv Reiser’s life. And his
teenage dream has evolved to adult
admiration the SS Hemi Barracudas.
But these cars were rare in ‘68, with
only 75 built, and Dodge with 80 SS
Darts. Today, few of these cars survive and are worth very large piles of
Benjamins. Not many folks, therefore,
have the capital to own them. But you
can still see them race in NHRA and
IHRA in the SS/A (manual trans) SS/
AA (automatic trans) classes. Almost
all are made from non-original cars.
The rules are quite strict, especially for
the engine, and the intent of the class
is to race these factory Hemi Mopars
to “nostalgia” rules, so that the cars
don’t become
Pro Stockers.
Marv came
across this
PPG Base Red
example at the
Russo/Steele
auction in Scottsdale last year.
He watched it
go unsold that
day, as the high
bid was well
short of the
owner’s reserve. But Marv
began thinking
that owning a
Hemi SS could
be within reach.
Several months
later, Marv
talked to his
friend and car/
engine builder,
Dale Reed,
about building
a Hemi engine for his ‘65
Dodge to run
as a nostalgia A/FX car. Dale said,
“Why do that when you can buy that
Hemi Cuda you saw in Scottsdale
at a very fair price. It’s here in my
garage.” With that, Marv inspected
the car, contacted the owner, and
worked a trade involving Marv’s ‘63
Max Wedge car.
Turns out the owner/builder was
a fella by the name of Doc Conroy.
He and his brother are fuel racers.
They built this car based on measurements from Bob Mazzolini’s SS
Barracuda, but added some ideas
from the fuel class. Like the giant
33x18.5x15 inch Mickey Thomp-
Top: there are only two factory race cars that came with this hood scoop.
Above left: the big Hemi is held to the unibody by motor plates, and has an
Accusump to pre-oil the engine and maintain pressure under hard g-loading at
launch. Above: yep, it’s street legal.
son’s out back. Marv believes that the
car would do a faster et with a narrower, and thus a lighter tire. Also, the
4.88 gears in the Ford 9” diff result
in the engine spinning to well over 7
grand at the end of the 1/4 mile. Marv
intends to change to a 4.56 to for
more reliability.
The engine is a Mopar Performance
cast iron 426 c.i. Hemi block stroked
to 542 c.i., sporting MP Stage V aluminum heads and Cross Ram intake.
It features a forged Keith Black crank,
Eagle rods and a custom roller cam
from Crower. It dyno’d at 702 ft-lb @
4900 rpm and 786 hp @ 6500 rpm.
As bought, the Cuda should run
mid-nine second et’s, based on the
6.2 second 1/8 mile pass. But Marv
knows that’s a region where parts are
eaten faster than he wants to replace
them, so he’s setting the car up to run
low 10 seconds in the quarter. To that
end, Marv will add 175 pounds of ballast and
has replaced the
dual race
Holleys
with less
aggressive carbs.
But Marv
reports
that the
short drive
to Cruisin’
Grand
from his
Escondido
home still
sucks up
5 gallons
of pump
gas.
When
Marv was a
teenager, he
was Mopar
racer. And to
this day, Marv
still is.
The only
difference
is, Marv has
now achieved
his ultimate
dream.
Top: nothing strikes fear into Chebby guys like big valve
covers with wires that go into the middle with “STAGE V”
cast into them. Above: the very tidy and well-thought out
cockpit in which to spend such a short amount of time.
