Like this one... He Felt Like a Person An elderly man named Bruce who had been living on the streets for many, many years was accepted as part of the original group of individuals who moved into 1175 Lee Hill when it first opened in 2014. According to his case managers he lived his life unapologetically—accepting their support most days, at times refusing to accept what they had to offer, but always with a smile and a joke. He was an important member of the community at Lee Hill, even more so within the homeless population at large within the city. Bruce passed away in December shortly after having a stroke. The night before, during his case manager’s last visit, Bruce was improbably but thankfully at peace, and said that he was content and happy. He was grateful for the friendship and support of his case manager, and smiled and said, “I’ll see you later kid.” After Bruce died quietly in his sleep, his case manager said, “When he was homeless he was broken and angry and would lash out. By the time he passed away, having lived his last year indoors in his own apartment, he felt like a person. Nobody can take that away from him again.” He did not die alone and homeless, and he will not be forgotten. Housing First is a programmatic approach designed to help chronically homeless individuals move quickly off the streets or out of the shelter system into permanent housing, accompanied by case management and support services. 1175 Lee Hill, a Housing First facility, is operated by Boulder Housing Partners with case management services provided by the Boulder Shelter for the Homeless, and provides 31 permanent supportive housing units to chronically homelessness individuals. BENITA DURAN Program Director, Denver Public Schools MARK GOOSMAN JEFF HOFFMEYER Pastor CATHERINE BEAN Developer, Element Properties The Boulder Shelter ended its 2015 fiscal year on September 30th, 2015. In FY2015, because of your investment, the Shelter was able to provide over 40,000 bed-nights of shelter and over 93,000 hot meals to 1,300 men and women in need. These results would not have been possible without the 1,000+ volunteers who gave of their time and the more than 3,000 donors who gave from their bank accounts. One of the highlights of the Shelter’s 2015 fiscal year was the opening of 1175 Lee Hill. In partnership with Boulder Housing Partners, 31 chronically homeless adults moved into this new facility over the course of five days just before Thanksgiving in 2014. This apartment building offers permanent housing, with on-site support, for those who have been chronically homeless, are highly vulnerable and have some form of disability. We are very excited to have 31 vulnerable people off the streets for good. Last year, the Shelter also invested significant energy into working with our sister agencies, Bridge House and BOHO to better coordinate our services. The results of this work so far have been greater program integration and the merging of client lists. This work continues with the end goal of greater positive outcomes for our clients. Again, none of this would be possible without the generous support from people like you. Your continued support helps to make all of these services for the less fortunate a reality. Thank you. For the challenge of it! I was very intrigued at my first interview. Feeding over 350 people daily with an extremely limited budget is the biggest challenge I have ever faced. My 30 years in hospitality were primarily in fine dining and catering. While the similarities between that and my work at the Shelter may seem to be few, food is still the common denominator. We all eat, and sometimes at the Shelter it could be the best part of someone’s day. How many people can say that about their job? What are your daily responsibilities? Many and varied... Creating recipes and cooking instructions for volunteers who are preparing meals. Working with Program Staff to coordinate a clean and organized kitchen. Supervising volunteers who assist with daily kitchen prep. Overseeing proper storage of donations and deliveries. Supervising corporate groups that use our facility for team building exercises. Making awesome soups! What exceptional challenges and opportunities have you discovered in your work here? My daily challenge is “what’s for dinner”? We get 90% of our food donations from Community Food Share. I order once a week, and then when the truck is unloaded the fun begins! Comfort food probably bests describes the “style” of our menus. Dinner will typically consist of soup, salad, protein, vegetable, starch, dessert and milk. Breakfasts have some combination of eggs, hash browns, pancakes, oatmeal, whole or canned fruit, yogurt, pastries, coffee, milk and juice. I always use fresh ingredients before opening cans, but the reality is we open a LOT of cans at the Shelter. I look forward to my shopping trips to CFS—they give me some creative freedom to prepare the best meals I can out of our extremely limited resources. What do you like to do for fun? I watch a lot of cooking shows! I love to entertain, and am looking forward to my daughter’s upcoming wedding. My more traditional schedule at the Shelter allows for free nights, weekends and holidays, never a possibility in the restaurant world! Hiking our beautiful state, spending time outdoors with family and my dog, Buddy! [ volunteer profile ] The “Three Amigos” of Thursday breakfast How long have you been volunteering at the Shelter and in which volunteer positions have you participated? For the past five plus years, Jay, Girish and Mark have been serving up a wonderful breakfast at the Shelter every Thursday morning. Mark also prepares and serves dinner on Monday nights during the winter season and has done several shifts with BCC over the past four years. Girish serves dinner once every month. What inspired you to volunteer at the Shelter? We each enjoy helping folks, and the homeless population is not only in need but is also hugely appreciative of whatever help they receive. The Shelter is also an “easy” place to work as the rules are clear and limited, and the staff is very respectful of the volunteers. page4 Under Our Roof ★★★★★★★★★★★★ W WE E C CE E LL E E BB R RA ATT E E Y YO OU U !! ★★★★★★★★★★★★ To (just some of our) friends, new and old... If so, what? What has surprised each of us is how courteous and thankful the residents are. There has not been a breakfast over the past five plus years that we have not had multiple guests thank us for our efforts. It’s a wonderful way to start the day. What is your favorite story or interaction from your time volunteering at the Shelter? Hard to pick just one story, so here are two... We see many of the same folks every week so we have the opportunity to get to know many of them. When they get a job or an apartment we are able to share a bit in their excitement and joy—which is really cool. And, every time a new volunteer has that “moment” when they realize the face of homelessness isn’t exactly what they expected - It is at that moment our community takes one step closer to increasing its compassion for, and understanding of, the people we serve here at the Shelter. April 2016 We invite you to become a member of the Home Team, the Boulder Shelter monthly giving program. You’ll be part of a winning team, a special dedicated group of loyal Shelter supporters, and an integral part of the Boulder Shelter’s mission - saving and changing lives every day. The Home Team was born from the idea that just as we encourage the people we work with to focus on building a positive future, we too try to continually be forward thinking in our planning. With your investment in the Shelter, you will help us to do that. In addition to being an easy and affordable way for you to make a positive impact in the lives of homeless individuals, recurring gifts provide the Shelter with an extra level of certainty as we move forward in our efforts to reach more individuals that need our help. Simply put, your monthly gift will represent the kind of help that just doesn’t give up - and the kind of help that can deliver a better life for so many. It’s easy to set up. On our website, just touch the “Donate Now” button and select “Monthly recurring gift” under “Type of Gift.” page5 “Our Adopt a Night sponsorship is so important to us.... We continue the legacy of our parents who taught us to help others in need. And we are able to send notes of gratitude to friends, clients and colleagues to let them know we sponsor the Shelter on their behalf.” ★ - Colson Quinn, Attorneys at Law W E C E L E B R AT E YO U ! ★ Every night this winter, up to 160 homeless people will call the Boulder Shelter home. You have the power to make available a night of safety, warmth and food for them! Your gift of $487 will help us provide a warm, clean bed and two hot, nutritious meals for 160 people in need. In addition, you will be recognized as the sponsor for a particular winter night of your choosing. There are 212 nights in our winter sheltering season. By filling up our calendar, you will raise $103,244 to help the Shelter provide much needed services for the homeless in our community. Please consider adding your name to the Shelter’s Adopt-a-Night calendar and reap the satisfaction that you are offering life saving services to those less fortunate. It’s easy to do.
