About LASA

retirement living, home care, and residential
aged care. LASA is committed to improved
standards, equality and efficiency throughout
the industry; helping older Australians live well.
We advocate for the health, community and
accommodation needs of older Australians,

interests of older Australians.

WELCOME
Welcome to LASA’s fourth annual National Congress
and Australia’s biggest age services trade exhibition!
Under the theme of Co-design: Tomorrow’s age services our organising
committee has produced a stellar program that will inform, inspire and
guide you through the landscape of reform and growth impacting our
industry.
Through actively participating in a co-design approach, together we
will start to break down the silos that isolate parts of our industry and
co‑produce the change we wish to see with all stakeholders. It is through
taking a co-design approach that we will create a sustainable and best
practice age services industry.
If we are to meet the needs of all older Australians – now and into the
future – platform change and readiness will be key to making sure that
your services, regardless of mandate or mission, are prepared for the future.

Keynote Presentation: Building a Winning Team
Innovation, Leadership, Resilience and Overcoming Adversity – Alastair Clarkson, Coach, Hawthorn Football Club
PLENARY SESSION 1 Melbourne Room 2, Level 2, Convention Centre
Alastair Clarkson is considered to be one of Hawthorn’s greatest coaches, and one of the best in the AFL. Clarkson’s ability to drive continuous improvement in a
constantly changing and competitive environment has set the benchmark for the way AFL football is coached and played today. Clarkson was appointed in 2005 to
rebuild the Hawthorn Football Club and he was prepared to make tough and necessary changes, like many in in the aged care industry are required to do on a daily
basis. In an extremely competitive industry, winning is the only indicator of success, and so, the club climbed its way back up the ladder to win the 2013 premiership.
In 2014, Clarkson was diagnosed with Guillain-Barre Disease, but the resilient Clarkson returned mid-season and coached Hawthorn to win back to back premierships.
Alastair’s opening keynote presentation will inspire delegates with a clear and motivating message of substance; how we as industry leaders need to continually evolve
and evaluate to overcome challenge and adversity, and in turn, transpire knowledge and experience into a successful winning formula.
16.10–16.55
Keynote Presentation: Live What You Love
A Life Filled with Passion and Purpose – Naomi Simson, Founder, RedBalloon
Sponsored by
The increasing pace of life is no more evident than in our world of aged care. Whether it be at our work or home, time is our most precious asset – we are all given only 24 hours
a day and it is how we choose to spend those precious seconds, minutes, hours, days and weeks that will ultimately determine our sense of wellbeing, or success. Delegates will
be owning their destiny as Naomi shows them how to put significance back into their work, identify and discover their passions, learn about positivity in the challenging world
of aged care and be persistent during ever-changing tough times. When you are faced with having to take on bigger challenges, in actual fact you could be allowing yourself to
experience the joy of deep accomplishment. Committed to making the world a better place, Naomi’s touching presentation will move and inspire, and hold true to aged care
whose dedicated workers must make powerful choices every day in order to live a life that they love, while supporting older Australians to do so also.

Merger and acquisition activity has been at unprecedented levels in the aged care
sector in the last 18 months. Aged care providers need to be aware of such activity
and current trends to ensure that they are able to capitalise on any opportunities
(on either the buy or sell side) or, alternatively, best position themselves “to go it
alone”. Join a panel of experienced practitioners comprising: an aged care provider;
a financier; a commercial advisor; and a lawyer, all with extensive experience
specifically in the aged care sector, as they provide a solid basis on current merger
and acquisition activity and what they and their organisations need to do to
ensure they maximise opportunities and are not left behind.
LASA Member Breakfast Session (Optional)
Unleashing Innovation in the CDC Era – Redefining Community
Partnerships to Co-create Services, Grow Revenue and Improve
Outcomes in a CDC Market
Aged care providers have always enjoyed high degrees of trust among clients, family
members and the broader community. Now that consumers are keenly assessing
differences in services and pursuing value for money, providers need to define their
value proposition, community by community. Fortunately, aged care is very much
part of local community identity. Local people want to be asked their opinion; to
co-create tomorrow’s aged services. The best providers are investing in consumer
engagement and insights to find new areas for service delivery, achieving better
outcomes for care recipients and families while diversifying and broadening revenue.
Join Rhod Ellis-Jones and panellists as they share stories from the field and explore
community identity, the role of the aged care provider, the evolving product and
service mix, and approaches to co-design.

Matt Grudnoff will discuss how the government funds retirement incomes and aged care. With the change of Prime Minister there is an opportunity for the aged care
sector to consider how funding can be improved including asset testing, the age pension and super tax concessions, as well as how to help people who are asset rich
but income poor to fund their aged care.

How can co-design help you better understand the needs of your customers in order to improve their experience, whilst innovating and designing services fit for
the ageing population? How can you make the most of this collaborative design-led approach to identify, design, prototype and launch new services and products
quickly and cheaply, whilst building ongoing engagement from both staff and customers. Having won a range of awards including Design Entreprenuer of the Year in
2008, Deborah’s experience and knowledge allows her to share thought provoking case studies from the UK’s design, social innovation and health sectors, providing

Everyone knows it: how important it is to effectively communicate what we are trying to achieve. But what many don’t know is that between 80 and 95% of
organisation’s don’t even know what their strategy is, regardless of how good it may be. This presentation will highlight some of the reasons why communicating
strategy fails and, most importantly, you will see how strategy can be converted into a co-designed story that can be told and retold, so everyone knows what you as
the organisation is trying to achieve.

Hetty Johnston AM, Founder and CEO, Bravehearts Inc.

Lara Hansen, Technical Manager, Aged Care Steps
Gerard Mansour, Commissioner for Senior Victorians
Aged care services are an integral part of local community infrastructure and service. The work we do is critically important to the wellbeing of communities and families;
and we do this work in concert with clients and their families. Family Violence comes in many shapes and forms – as an important stakeholder in community wellbeing
and family health, the aged care provider needs to understand how to recognise violence and how to protect and empower the vulnerable – most often older female
members of our community. How do we as Providers help people living in dysfunctional settings, understand that they have choices; that abuse and violence is wrong;
and that Providers can assist people to take the first steps to securing safer living arrangements?
With over 1000 delegates in the room; the frightening statistics are that 1 in 4 women are being abused behind closed doors. This is our opportunity to shine the light
into a sometimes dark and uncomfortable place – to say enough is enough – domestic abuse and violence is not a domestic issue – it is a community issue that needs
to be embraced as an epidemic across Australia the impacts all socioeconomic households and all ages.

Does Size Really Matter? – Willie Law, Principal, APAC, TeleTech Consulting
Big Data is a term we hear more and more in business. Yet the term ’big’ is relative. Consider, if a megabyte of data was the size of a pea then the quantity of consumer
data, available today, would equal the size of earth…that’s big by any standard, and maybe just ‘too’ big for us to comprehend or understand how we can use, deploy
or benefit from. Well, maybe, as we’d all know, size doesn’t matter, it’s just the way you use it.

The Australian Government makes its plans for age services based on a 70+ age population. So, Facilitator: Louise Greene
Director, The Ideal Consultancy
with the first wave of baby boomers turning 70 this year, we have seen a significant increase in planning for aged care services and a spotlight has well and truly been placed on the industry.
Louise will model up the top hottest areas for growth in Australia and will also use case studies
to demonstrate examples of how facilities have worked smarter instead of harder by using
demographic data projections.

Management of an organisation by its directors and officers is coming under
greater scrutiny than even before. Regulators, investors, stakeholders and the
community demand transparency and accountability on their stewardship
of the organisation and its performance and prospects. Good governance is
vital to providing such transparency and assists the board to drive responsible
performance with a framework for better decisions made in a more timely
fashion; better information on the risks attached to decisions being understood
sooner; and clearer and more effective accountability for decision making.
Boards that focus on success and sustainability understand the value-add of
governance and do not view it as compliance.
The panel will discuss:
• moving beyond compliance to governance for performance
• the practice of high performing boards in discharging their duties
• leadership in governance to facilitate the strategic objectives of the organisation
• sound risk management to enable knowledgeable risk acceptance to
promote innovation and growth.
Governance Institute of Australia is the only independent professional
association with a sole focus on whole-of-organisation governance. Our
active membership base of more than 7,000 company secretaries, governance
advisers and risk managers ensures that Governance Institute is at the cutting
edge of knowledge of issues and support of sound practice in the continuous
evolution of governance and risk management.
