DOING THE MOST THEY COULD
FOR THEIR CHILDREN
The Douglass family goes way back
with MOST...like ALL the way back.
“I remember hearing something about this
scholarship program on the Oprah show
back in 1999, and a friend encouraged me to
apply,” says Pauline Douglass.
The Oprah show was, in fact, where a lot
of families first heard about scholarship
opportunities available through Children’s
Scholarship Fund and its affiliates, which
included the brand new MOST program in
Memphis.
Despite the long odds, the Douglass family
was selected to receive scholarships for
their children. After investigating a number
of places, Pauline and Edrick Douglass, Sr.
settled on a school called Thrifthaven Baptist
Academy, which later moved to Cordova and
was renamed Heritage Baptist Academy.
“We wanted to do the
most we could to give our
children the best education
they could get,” said
Pauline. Strong academics
were the most important
thing the family looked for,
but as her husband, Edrick
Douglass, Sr., points out,

“Being able to keep the family together at one
campus was a big reason we chose Heritage. It
was also important that the school be diverse
and be able to expose our children to a lot of
opportunities.”
The oldest three Douglass children, Takindra,
Edrick, Jr. and Ashley, all started
at the school in 1999 on MOST
scholarships, and were followed

The mission of Memphis Opportunity Scholarship Trust is to give Memphis-area
families the opportunity to send their children to the school of their choice.

Today, three of the former MOST scholars have
attended the University of Memphis, and Edrick,
Jr., joined the Air Force and travels the world as a
crew chief repairing planes. The youngest, Evelyn,
just graduated and will start at Rhodes College this
fall in their pre-veterinary program. While there, she
plans to volunteer at the zoo.
“I’m really thankful for the MOST program,”
she says. “I would not be where I am without it.
Because of MOST, my dreams have become my
reality!”

Evelyn’s dad agrees. “This program is a great way
to invest your money,” he says. And he has five
great ways to prove his point - his outstanding kids!

MOST SCHOLARS CLASS OF 2015!
MOST recognized 17 graduating MOST
Scholars at our annual Senior Reception
on May 5 at Memphis Botanic Garden.
We are so proud of this outstanding
group of students, which includes two
valedictorians (Selena Foster and Evelyn
Douglass), as well as Miss Saint Agnes
(Gabby Willingham) and Miss Immaculate
Conception (Selena Foster), and other
honors and awards too numerous to
mention here.
Sixteen of the graduates are going
directly to college (most with the help of
merit scholarships) and one is joining the
military. Many of them are planning a career in medicine, a couple of graduates aim to become
engineers, and one is going into business. On behalf of this group of hard-working students and
their dedicated families, we thank you, our donors, for helping them fulfill their dreams!

a moment to recognize Selena Foster, who is one
MOST SCHOLAR RECEIVES MULTIPLE HONORS
of our 2015 graduates. This year, Selena was voted Miss
Immaculate Conception Cathedral School by her peers,
was valedictorian of her graduating class, and was named a
Commercial Appeal Academic All-Star. Selena has also been
involved in Bridge Builders, the ICCS track and field team,
and numerous other school and church activities. She will be
enrolling at Sewanee: The University of the South this fall,
and plans to become a veterinarian.
Congratulations to Selena, an impressive MOST Scholar!
