Blue Beret August 2016
President’s
Corner
Dear Friends,
I have often been reminded by our dear friend Dale Schwamborn,
that the role of President is that of a caretaker. One who looks over
the club, protects it and helps it grow. It is an enormous challenge,
but it will also be a lot of fun. Traveling and camping with friends,
it doesn’t get any better than that!
Jan and I would like to thank the many friends who have supported
us over the years. You have helped make this journey more enjoyable and we truly appreciate all the help. Special thanks go to our
WBCCI parents, Jim and Raisin Schwerdfeger. They have been our
mentors, our advisors and most importantly our very close friends.
We are extremely excited about the coming year. I have worked
closely with the ECC for several years and this year I have asked
them to develop a new calendar system so that you can better view
all the club events. Once this system is in place all club activities
will be viewable from a single website. Changes will also be made
to the Blue Beret, starting this issue which is printed on a new paper
stock. It is my goal is to focus on membership value during my
term as president.
Looking down the road, the 2017 International Rally will be held
in Escanaba, Michigan. Space is limited, so don’t procrastinate! You
can sign up online at www.wbcci.org
Travel Safe,
Richard

Blue Beret / August 2016 Teresa Taylor, Chairman
Hi! Teresa Taylor here, new
Membership chair for Richard Girard.
Richard asked me last year, I think
because it was one of those quit talking
about it and just do it things.
You may recognize the name Teresa
Taylor as Glenn and I have hosted the
Pendleton Round-Up National Rally for
the last 6 years, Chairman of the Tours
and Information at International the last 3
years. If you’re a Vintage Airstream Club
member, I was membership chairman
2012-2015. In that position, I was both
data entry and cheerleader. I’m also past
President of the Oregon Unit.
My husband Glenn and I have been
lifelong campers, first in our VW camper,
then full time trailer camping for nine
months, with a 2 & 4 year old, watching
a shuttle land at Edwards Air Force base
in California and another take off at
Kennedy Space center in the early 80’s.
Tent camping as the boys were growing
up. Kids grown, getting ready to retire and
here we are members since 2006, retired
three years and loving every bit of it. Just
a little about Glenn and I. We live in the
small coastal town of Seaside, Oregon.
Glenn retired from Building and Planning
in Seaside and I owned an interior design/
window covering store and workroom
for over 20 years. Little did I know
that my design background would help
me in this job, but I found that what I
did in designing interiors is listening,
finding solutions
and making sure
it looks great
and functions as
designed. Same job
as membership, so
I have been talking
with and listening
to new members,
new Airstream
owners and not
so new members
to see what they
want in this home
we call the Wally
Byam Caravan
Club.
I’m excited to
get started on this new job, that of
your Membership Chair. The corporate
office and I are working on new unit
membership packets which will have
brochures, hang tags and post cards
that each unit can personalize. Your unit
membership chair may already have
them. Our new brochure was designed
by Kimber Moore and as Kimber says,
reflects the new Airstream owner and
our Airstream lifestyle.
I agree.
I’m also starting to
work with corporate on
updating our welcome
to new members with
both the welcome
packet and website.
Our unit membership
chairs and treasurers
will be getting new
member and renewal
information, ideas and
templates to make their
job easier.

most point in the U.S. during the Florida
State Rally
The all new Social Media team will
be making sure our social media tells our
story of Airstream friends and adventure.
We’ll be available to help units make their
Social Media a great way for potential
members to get to know them before
they join.
While Glenn and I were in Jackson
Center at the corporate office working on
membership, I also updated the display
cases and bulletin board at the Airstream
factory. Take a look the next time you
are in JC.
We’ll see you down the road if we
haven’t already. We have been traveling
since January 2016 attending as many
rallies as possible and meeting members
to find the best practices to share.

A funny thing happened on the way
to Lewisburg! A not so funny thing
happened on the way to Lewisburg! A
wonderful thing happened on the way
to Lewisburg! In case anyone is
confused, this is an article about our
journey to the International Convention/Rally in Lewisburg, West
Virginia. Fortunately for you, the
reader, Blue Beret publication
deadlines do not permit a ten
page documentary on the Rally
itself. I am limited to reporting
only “what happened on the
way to Lewisburg,” because
the Rally will not officially
begin for another week and
a half.
First, the funny thing that
happened on the way to Lewisburg. We camped for the night
about two hours from Lewisburg,
ready to make the final short jaunt
the next morning and be parked
on our assigned arrival date, June
15. Late afternoon, early evening, a
non-Airstream motorhome pulled into
the site next to us. It was a brand new
rig carrying a temporary New Jersey
tag. As I soon discovered, not only
was the motorhome brand new, the
people operating it were brand new to
the camping experience; a man and his
handicapped wife and their adult son.
It was their first outing, and it showed.
Now, I could dazzle you with all the
ingenious, insightful camping tips with
which I enlightened them, but I won’t,
because I didn’t. I remained on standby
in case they asked for help, but I did not
attempt to be intrusive. The point I want
to make about this “funny thing that
happened on the way to Lewisburg” is
to emphasize again how blessed we are
as an Airstream club to have experienced
18
Blue Beret / August 2016 and skilled members who “show us the
ropes” and help solve problems. No one
in this club remains a novice very long,
because we look out for one another.
The not so funny thing that happened
on the way to Lewisburg was very serious, but could have been much worse.
While driving from the above mentioned
campsite to our Lewisburg destination we
received a phone call. It was from our
New York Finger Lakes Unit president,
Nancy Hussar. She and first mate John
had just started out for Lewisburg that
morning. Less than 50 miles down the
road, they found themselves at the mercy
of a fishtailing Airstream trailer pushing
their suburban uncontrollably and eventually crashing them into a guard rail. In
Nancy’s own words: “Our Suburban
and Airstream are totaled. We were
fortunate not to get hurt. God was
watching over us.” As we all know,
things can be replaced; people are
irreplaceable.
The wonderful thing that
happened on the way to
Lewisburg is a tribute to all the
caring people in our club. In
mid-May, Fred Yochum and
Anne Briscoe canceled their
Rally reservation because
their infant granddaughter,
who almost died last November, was scheduled for
kidney surgery. They asked
for our prayers. Just prior to
our departure for Lewisburg,
I received the good news. The
5 hour surgery on June 3 went
perfectly to plan, and 11 month
old Mikayla “…was preciously
perfect, smiley and a bundle of joy”
when she returned home. Fred’s message
continued: “Global prayers took place
for Mikayla, including…Ghana, West
Africa…Brazil…our local church…
other churches...[and] WBCCI members.
Therefore, with sincere thanks…please
do make known the power of prayer
at the WBCCI rally. I also know from
personal experience that Airstreamers are
caring, compassionate people.” And all
God’s people said, “Amen!”
This is my litany of Lewisburg lore;
the funny, the not so funny, and the
wonderful things that happened on the
way to the WBCCI 59th International
Convention/Rally in Lewisburg, West
Virginia! What is yours?

In March 2016 at Camp Verde, the
Arizona Unit enjoyed a rally with a South
African theme. Our hosts, Rod and Joan
Gamble, originally from South Africa,
kicked off the rally with an afternoon
English tea, in which they served hot
tea, of course, and freshly baked English
scones with clotted cream and a variety
of jams. Yum, yum! Later, we shared
happy hour and a potluck dinner.
Following the trail from ancient Indian Ruins

accessible from the Stephensons’ home.
We hiked past ancient ruins of an Indian
settlement, walked along Spring Creek
in a lush valley featuring cottonwoods,
sycamores and wild flowers, and trekked
on a high desert path. In the evening, we
grilled meat and shared a potluck supper.
Sunday morning, we were treated to
a delicious continental breakfast before

onions start to brown. Do not overcook.
Add the ground beef and stir into the
onions until the beef starts to brown.
Soak each slice of white bread in a
plate of water.
Gently squeeze out the water and
crumble the wet bread into the beef and
onion mixture. Keep stirring and frying
until the beef is uniformly brown.
While the beef, onions and bread are
simmering, mix the spices together in a
cup (curry, turmeric, cumin, sugar and
vinegar). Stir thoroughly.
Stir the mixture of spices into the

Transfer the ground beef mixture into
a large ovenproof pan.
Beat the milk and eggs together in a

Pour the milk-egg mixture carefully
over the ground beef, ensuring that the
milk-egg mixture completely covers the
ground beef.
Bake at 450F for about 30 minutes,
until the milk-egg covering starts to
bubble and turns brown in patches.
The surface of the bobotie should be
a patchwork of yellow and brown when
it is done baking.
Serve the bobotie over fluffy white

desiccated white coconut.
Serve with side dishes of tomatoonion salad, sliced bananas and chutney.

Dice 3-4 large white onions.
Stir tomatoes and onions together in a

Mix together the following:
3/4 cup white vinegar
1-2 tablespoons of fig-infused balsamic
vinegar (regular balsamic vinegar
works, but fig-infused adds a special
flavor)
2-3 tablespoons of white vinegar
Stir the aforementioned mix into the
diced tomatoes and onions.
Chill in the refrigerator for an hour
or two before serving.

The Olympic Caravans
With the 2016 Summer Olympics
beginning in August in Rio de Janeiro,
Brazil, now is an appropriate time to
review two unique Airstream caravans
from 48 years ago that attended the
1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City,
Mexico. Never before or after has any
official Airstream caravan attended an
Olympics.
Airstreams toured the west coast of
Mexico, visiting the cities of Hermisillo,
Guaymas, Obregon, Mazatlan, Tepic,
Guadalajara, Morelia, and Toluca on the
way to Mexico City; and Queretaro and
Monterrey on the return trip before ending in McAllen, Texas on November 1.
Caravan 62 rendezvoused at Laredo,
Texas on October 7, and its 180 Airstreams toured the east coast of Mexico,
visiting Saltillo, Metchuala, San Luis
Potosi, and Ceyala on the way to Mexico
City. This caravan took a longer route
back visiting Cuernavaca, Acapulco,
Morelia, Aguascalientes, and Delicias
before ending in El Paso, Texas on November 18.
Main Entrance to 1968 Olympic Stadium
The participants of Airstream Company Caravans 61 and 62 attended the
Summer Olympic Games in October
1968. After a year in the planning,
these two caravans provided participants a unique opportunity to see the
Olympics while not having to worry
about making travel or accommodation
arrangements, pay exorbitant prices at
hotels and restaurants, nor even having
to buy tickets for their favorite sporting
events. Both caravans were six weeks
in length, and each travelled about 2500
miles in total, but they left at different
times from different places, and they
followed different routes.
Caravan 61 rendezvoused at Tucson,
Arizona on September 22, and its 108
The caravanners were able to watch
some action in 10 of the 19 major sports
that were contested at the Olympics,
including track and field, swimming,
gymnastics, basketball, soccer, equestrian, wrestling, target shooting, and fencing. Two caravanners had themselves
previously participated in the Olympics
many years earlier, one in track and
field in 1924 and another in shooting in
1936. Some caravanners studied hard for
months before the games so they would
be knowledgeable about what they were
seeing, but everyone was fascinated by
the competition of over 7000 athletes
from 115 nations and the great number
of Olympic and world records they saw
broken at the games. Many caravanners were among the crowd of 100,000
in the Olympic Stadium that watched
the emotional Closing Ceremonies on
October 27.
The caravanners’ exciting 10 day stay
in Mexico City offered much more than
just the Olympics, as they were given

Street Scene on the way to Mexico City
Both caravans met in Mexico City
and camped together at a special site for
10 days to attend the Olympics. Their
camping location was in the northeast
corner of Mexico City and was within a
short commute to the Olympic Games.
Airstream was able to secure tickets for
hundreds of caravanners to a variety of
sporting competitions. This is a feat that
might be impossible to repeat today.

25 A few of the Airstreams at the Mexican City Olympics Encampment
tions included visits to the Chapultepec
Castle that was once a fortress used by
the Spaniards, the University of Mexico,
and the Xochimilco Floating Gardens.
Both caravans also offered much more
of Mexico to the caravanners than just
Mexico City. Each stopover on both
caravans was filled with warm welcomes,
speeches in Spanish, modern Mexican
and ancient Aztec dances, and music from
concert and mariachi bands. Many made
a side trip to Taxco to purchase silver.
Like so many other Airstream Caravans, the Olympic Caravans may have
been in the right place at the right time.
Everything was smaller in the 1960s.
Today, the Olympics have become more
popular than ever with ever more sports
involved. The enormous size and cost of
the Olympic Games today might prevent
such caravans from being able to secure
a nearby camping location and so many
event tickets, but it’s at least interesting
to think about the possibility of a future
Olympic Caravan.
The Other Caravan to
Attend an Olympics:
Since this article was submitted, it has been learned that the 1960
European Caravan offered an optional chance to attend the 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome, Italy. It is not currently known how many
caravanners took advantage of that opportunity. At this time, there are
no other known caravans to attend any Summer or Winter Olympics.

Corning Window Curved
Glass Replacement
I own a 1967 Airstream and I need
replacement windows for my Safari
but I have been told they are no longer
available. Now what?
If you own a 1966, 1967 or 1968
Airstream, you have the Corning
curved frameless windows, the feature
that sets them apart from earlier model
Airstreams.
Airstream used the windows for only
three years and replacement glass was
not easily obtainable.
Vintage Airstream owners replaced
their broken windows with flat flexible
plastic that scratches, gets cloudy and
does not seal very well at the bottom.
Most people believe they are not
available but this is not true, Airstream
has replacement windows and have been
selling them for many years.
You can call the Airstream Parts Department in Jackson Center for a list of
Dealers carrying the windows and what
sizes are available.
Rubber Screw Caps Making sure you don’t
get the Point!
If you have every cleaned the inside
window frames on your trailer and caught
your hand on one of the screw points,
these screw covers may be for you.
The screw caps are used to cover
screw points in the window frame between the inside screen & the window
glass. Airstream uses screws to attach
the window screen to the window frame
resulting in screw points protruding
between window frame and outside
glass. This can lead to a few nicks and
scratches when cleaning the inside of the
window frame. Airstream currently uses
these caps on all new products, but if you
have an earlier model without the screw
covers they can be obtained through your
Airstream dealer.
The Airstream part number is 38211603.
Furnace Replacement
Problem: I have taken out the old furnace
by hook and by crook without removing my stove. Should I go on and take
out the stove in order to install the new
furnace? Or should I try to do it on my
side in the trailer? I have a 1994 Excella.
After a major battle, I learned that the
hose connections were riveted on.
Answer: Ah, the joys of working on an
Airstream! One thing I learned long ago
was that the best way to take one apart
is to know how they put them together.
(From the outside in.)
As for access to your furnace, removing the stove is the easiest way to get
there. Removing the stove is actually
easier than it looks at first.
Start by turning off the LP gas at the
bottles out front, both of them.
At the stove, start by removing the
grates and top.
Along each side, you should see two
Phillips head screws. Remove them (total
of 4). It is possible there will be more
screws in the frame along the front. Open
the oven door to make sure. If there are,
remove them as well.
Using two properly sized wrenches,
crescent or open-end, loosen and separate
the connection to the gas feed line.
Now it is just a matter of getting a
good hold on the stove and lifting it up
and out.
Next, install your new furnace.
Putting the stove back, you just reverse
the process.

Happy 100th Birthday to OUR
National Parks (1916 – 2016)
100 Years: Let's Celebrate!
The National Park Service turns 100 on
August 25, 2016, and everyone can take part in
the celebration!
The centennial will kick off a second century
of stewardship of America's national parks and
engaging communities through recreation,
conservation,
and
historic
preservation
programs. Visit old favorites or explore and make
new ones. The National Park System has Parks
in both rural and urban areas, so visit them all.
Many Airstream owners volunteer in our
National Parks, working in the field, in
campgrounds or gift shops, etc. This is and can
be a very rewarding way to spend your summers.
Go online and check it out.
National Parks are all over the U.S., so check
out ones close to you and plan a rally and
caravan visiting these National Treasures.
Annual Passes can be purchased at the Visitor
Centers (also Veteran’s and Handicapped
passes). Check online for information.
We invite you to find your park and discover
the national parks and programs in your own
backyard!
32
Blue Beret / August 2016 Note: A good way to commemorate your visit to
all aspects of the National Park
System is to buy one of their
Passport Books while in the park
Visitor’s Center and stamp it in
all sections of the park. (I am on
my Sixth Passport Book.) They
also have a Junior Ranger
Program and Passport Book for
the kids/grandkids which allows them to learn
through doing while in the park. This uses all
aspects of learning from art, math, English,
science, etc. When the Park booklet is
completed, take it to the ranger in the visitor’s
center. He will check and swear your child into
the ranger program and award your “ranger” a
Ranger Badge with the Park’s name on it. “I
have done this myself over the years and have
used it in my environmental science classes. I
too have a collection of Jr. Badges I earned and
displayed in my classroom. This is a great and
fun way to learn about the park and reinforces
their learning skills in the natural environment.

INTERNATIONAL RALLY
Escanaba, Michigan 2017
Jane Carmichael, #3230 and John Sellers, #1587
Contributed by:
Bill and Marti Upton, WBCCI #3691
Long-Time Yoopers
The 60th WBCCI International Rally will be held at the
Upper Peninsula State Fairgrounds, Escanaba, Michigan July
22–29, 2017. (Note the Dates) President Richard Girard and
his wife Jan enthusiastically encourage you to attend! The
UP is a popular destination. Lay your plans now!
Holy Wah! Ya tinkn t’go ta Escanaba in da heart and
soul of da U.P., dat Superior State? You betcha, you in for
BIG treat! Hey! What da heck? Read on...
Escanaba (Elevation 607 ft.), is the 3rd largest city in the U.P.
Incidentally, the U.P. stands for Michigan’s Upper Peninsula,
often referred to as God’s Country, located just north of the
Mackinac Bridge and south of Heaven. The people from the
UP are known as Yoopers. (There are 3 types: Native…born
in the UP, Long Timers...lived in the UP most of their lives,
and just plain Yoopers...everyone else who lives there) The
official language is Yoopanese (a dialect of English native to
the Upper Peninsula of Michigan). Yoopers are fiercely proud
of their land, heritage (primarily Scandinavian) and way of life.
Escanaba is a town of about 12,500, located in Delta
County (county population of nearly 36,000) which boasts
over 200 miles of varied fresh water shoreline, the most of any
county in the continental United States, including beautiful
sand beaches, marshes and wetlands for bird and wildlife
viewing, as well as stunning limestone cliffs. Escanaba is in
the Eastern time zone.
The North woods of Michigan is legendary for an abundance
of wildlife including black bear, moose, wolf, fox, beaver,
quail, grouse, wild turkey, rabbit and the white tail deer. Some
of the best hunting and fishing in the world exists here! Come
prepared for fresh PURE air and crystal clear water!
Some interesting history about the UP: The UP didn’t use
to belong to Michigan! To make a long story short, Michigan
owned the Toledo Strip which Ohio wanted badly. After years
of bickering and some bloodshed (a stabbing and a dead pig so
the story goes) a deal was finally struck: Michigan conceded
to the “wasteland of the UP” for the Toledo Strip. However,
it turns out that logging and minerals proved to be a GREAT
asset and wealth for the State of Michigan. In fact, the steel
used to build your tow vehicles probably came from the rich
iron ore mines of the UP, many of which are still active today,
along with copper, nickel and gold. Logging continues to exist
and paper mills are an important industry.
Another interesting tidbit: The Monarch Butterflies’ annual
migration passes through here just north and east of Escanaba
on the Bay de Noc in late summer, August and September, as
thousands of the beautiful orange butterflies rest-up and await
a north wind to help carry them across the open waters of
Lake Michigan and Green Bay to Door County in Wisconsin
en route to Mexico.
Back to Escanaba. There are few worries about traffic jams,
car crashes, crime or severe weather in Escanaba. Nestled
near the top of Lake Michigan, on Little Bay de Noc, miles
of beautiful sandy public beaches, bike paths, light houses,
and hiking trails await you, along with championship golf
courses, fishing, bird watching, boating, and casinos. In fact,
there is so much to do in the UP, you could spend your whole
summer here and many folks do just that!
In 1920, Henry Ford wrote about Yooperland, “It’s one of
the prettiest places in the world!” Did you know there’s even
a movie about Escanaba? Jeff Daniels starred in the 2001
movie, Escanaba in da Moonlight, a comedy about Yoopers
and their sacred Deer Camp.
You might be thinking, what’s there to do in such a small
town? Plenty! Folks travel from all over to visit Escanaba and
the UP. While you won’t find many big box stores and few
franchise restaurants, nonetheless, Escanaba has much to offer.

Storytelling
Special Event Rally
Jonesborough,Tennessee
October 5 - 9, 2016
Harry & Teresa Herrmann
Imbued with the natural
beauty of Northeast Tennessee,
Jonesborough has played host to
the National Storytelling Festival since its inception in 1973.
Tucked away near the Blue Ridge
and Great Smoky Mountains,
Tennessee’s oldest town offers
historic charm, modern services
and small town hospitality. It is a storybook setting for three
days of storytelling festivities. The picturesque place is where
the storytelling revival began, and where thousands return
each year to share the time-honored tradition.
Take advantage of early parking on October 2-4 at only
$23.00 per night with full hook-ups. Come early and have
time to do some touring in the East TN, Southwest VA, and
Eastern NC area.
A must visit is the Gray Fossil Site only 2 miles from camp
(discovered in 2000 and is one of the largest, deepest fossil
sites in the world with finds of red panda, rhinos, camels,
alligators, tapirs, saber-tooth tiger, elephant, etc.), tour Bristol
International Speedway, attend a play at the famous Barter
Theatre in Abingdon, VA and have lunch at the historic Martha Washington Inn, take a day trip to Asheville, NC to tour
the Biltmore Mansion, visit Natural Tunnel, VA or visit the
home of President Andrew Johnson with lunch at the historic
General Morgan Inn in nearby Greeneville, TN. We will be
available to offer any guidance, suggestions or directions.
If you plan to come early, you will want to also get tickets
for the Donald Davis performance on Wednesday evening,
October 5. You can order those when you call for your festival tickets. Mr. Davis is a retired Methodist minister and a
favorite storyteller of many. If you have never heard him,
you have missed a real treat.

for the activities at Old Threshers and it is a great learning
experience for children as we watch farming demonstrations
by horses, an old fashioned saw mill, rope being made and
tour the village buildings. On Saturday after the power parade, we host an open house that seems to grow in attendance
every year as we meet many wonderful people curious about
our silver trailers. This year you may sign up to go through
a corn maze at a local farmers which will cost an additional
$6.00 per person with a minimum of 10 people required. We
park on the grounds and the first 20 people to register have
electricity available to them. If the weather is not hot, more
will have electricity available. You may purchase meals on
the grounds or in the town if you prefer. A registration coupon
is printed in this Blue Beret.

I think that sometimes we all take some of the good things
in life for granted. It’s like going to your favorite restaurant
knowing that the service and food is going to be exactly as
you like it. Well I sometimes think we take our membership in
the WBCCI for granted. Yes, we love those big red numbers
on our rigs; we enjoy receiving our International Directory
among other day to day needs when belonging to the country’s
largest single brand RV club. And don’t forget our wonderful
Blue Beret. The members of our club are very fortunate to have
a wonderful group of folks at Jackson Center Headquarters,
working quietly in the background keeping everything in order
and on track. No easy task considering how “needy” we can
be sometimes. Please join me in tipping our berets to all the
wonderful people at Headquarters that “make it happen” day
in and day out.
August, depending on where you may live, can be the
warmest month of our camping season and that’s probably
why we love Region One. From the beaches of Connecticut
to the wonders of the Canadian farmland there is plenty to
do and see while keeping cool. All of the units in our region
have a full schedule of rallies running into October so no one
should be bored this summer. I’m also pleased to announce
that we have been seeing a steady growth of new members
coming into our region. With Airstream building a record number of rigs this year, I can expect to see membership growth
continue. Please do make an effort to search out our newest
members and make them feel right at home. I remember our
first rally and if someone hadn’t taken us under their wing,
we would have been lost. Sometimes we forget what it’s like
being a newbie - not knowing how happy hours work or that
you need to bring your own set-up for dinners. And badges,
yes you better wear your badge when socializing.
Often the new members are also first time Airstream owners
and certainly find themselves lost in that great big blue owner’s
manual binder. If you see someone struggling with setting up,
politely offer them some help. Many of us seasoned campers
prefer to be left alone when setting up our rigs but anyone new
at this I would imagine would be grateful for the expert tips.
Enjoy your summer and as always, keep the shiny side up!

What a wonderful summer it is shaping up to be!
By now most of us have returned from the International in
Lewisburg and are excitedly anticipating Escanaba – or just
the next local rally that is on the schedule.
And what a bounty of rallies we have in Region 2. Here
is a selection of what is available over the next two months:
Enjoy a picnic with Al-Mon-O at Crooked Creek State Park
Have lunch with the Mid-Atlantic Unit at an historic property in Middletown, MD
Join the Keystone PA Unit and the Delaware Valley NJ
Unit for a rally at Jersey Shore Haven
Watchung Unit is having a rally in Catskill, NY
The Ontario Unit is hosting a German themed dinner in
Kitchener ON
Check your Blue Beret and the Region/Unit websites for

Remember – it’s always fun to go to another Unit’s/Region’s
Rally and see things from a different perspective.

WBCCI’s Region 3 would like you to meet your officers
for the coming year.
Our new President of Region 3 is John Frerking of the South
Florida Unit. He and his wife, Eileen, have travelled the world
extensively and since 2004 have enjoyed traveling six months
of the year throughout the U.S. in their 1999, 30’ Airstream.
Originally from North Carolina, John spent the last 35 years
of his career as the senior pastor of Faith Lutheran Church
in North Palm Beach, FL. His involvement in community
service organizations has earned him, not once but twice, the
Palm Beach County Chamber of Commerce: Community
Leader of the Year award. His innovative programs included
home-delivered meals, community food pantry and refugee
resettlement ministry that welcomed more than 200 people
from around the world. Eileen’s career was in education culminating as an elementary and alternative education principal.
The Frerkings have three children and six grandchildren and
have lived in North Palm Beach for 45 years.
First Vice President is John Leake of the South Carolina
Palmetto State Unit. Born and still living in York, South
Carolina, John joined WBCCI in 2009 though he and his
wife, Susan, had been trailering for 25 years. John organized
the “Alumalina” rally in 2012 as an informal gathering of
Airstream enthusiasts. John would like Alumalina to promote
the Airstream lifestyle and to encourage non-club members
to consider joining WBCCI. John taught shop classes in the
Gaston County Schools but, for the last 30 plus years, has
worked as a self-employed furniture maker with his son. Susan
retired as a kindergarten teaching assistant. The Leakes have
two sons and two granddaughters.
Second Vice President is Randy Godfrey of the Florida
Unit. Randy and Pat have celebrated 50 years of marriage and
have two children and two grandchildren. While the children
were at home, Randy worked with the Cub and Boy Scouts,
Little League Baseball and swim teams. He has been active
in many roles in his church, worked on Habitat for Humanity
projects and for the last 11 years has been President of his
home owners association. Joining WBCCI in 2007 after getting
their Airstream in 2006, they attended their first International
Rally in Perry. Since then Randy has been very active in his
unit serving as Vice President, President, delegate to International and Trustee and the Florida State Rally serving as its
Registrar for many years.
Please welcome our new officers to Region 3 and wish
them well during their terms of service.

Madison, IN
September 14-18, 2016
Our Region 5 Rally this year is in Madison, Indiana, September 14-18, 2016. Madison is nestled on the Ohio River
about half way between Louisville and Cincinnati. It is a town
rich in early American History, settled in 1809. Recognized
as “the prettiest small town in the Midwest” by the Ladies
Home Journal, and “Best Preserved Town in the Midwest”
by the Chicago Tribune, Madison boasts the largest historic
district in Indiana and the largest contiguous National Historic
Landmark District in the United States. There are over 133
blocks on the National Register of Historic Places and three
National Landmarks. See coupon in the back of this Blue Beret.

Region 6 members are home from the International Rally.
Congratulations go out to International Past President Jim
Schwerdfeger and Raisin for an active, successful year. We are
so proud of the job that he did for all WBCCI members and
of course us in Region 6. We are looking forward to working
with the new incoming International President Richard and
First Lady Jan Girard.
Our current Region Officers are almost half way through
their terms. We want to encourage all units to continue their
efforts to increase membership. We are doing well this year,
so keep it up!
We want to encourage our Region 6 units to update their
websites as soon as their new officers have been selected.
Begin replacing older newsletters unless you have a section
for archives. Webmaster Ronnie Erb will work with the units
to accomplish this. If your unit has a new webmaster, he will
also work to get them on board and provide any training to
unit webmasters. Check it out at Region6.wbcci.net.
The Region 6 Rally location has been announced. We
will be returning to the same location as this past year. The
place is Picayune, MS at SunRoamers RV Resort, October
5–9 http://www.johnnyslakesidervresort.com/. Start making
your reservations. Registration forms are out and have been
sent to unit presidents.
Louisiana Unit has announced their 2016 Christmas Rally
to be held in Galveston, TX in conjunction with Galveston’s
Victorian Holiday Festival on December 2-4. Hosts are Gerald
and Bobby Peltier. All are welcome, so mark your calendars.
The Tennessee State rally was again a good time for all who
attended. The TN units have had great success with this rally.
The Alabama Unit held the Warm Springs Fling Rally in
early May at Pine Mountain CG in Georgia. This is a beautiful
area, full of history to visit. They planned tours to Callaway
Gardens and to the Infantry Museum at Fort Benning. President
Roosevelt’s Summer White House is a must see.

Blue Beret / August 2016 Pensacola Unit held their Grandparents and Kids Rally in
April and it was a huge success. Its theme was Dr. Seuss - Cat
in the Hat. This was well thought out and fit the theme to a T.
Both adults and kids wore Dr. Seuss costumes, ate green eggs
(yep…they were really green!) and ham for breakfast, played
games, and went on a theme hike and picnic. What a treat!
Watch for a write up about this in the “Hints for Airstreamers”
page in an upcoming article for the Blue Beret. Watch for it
and make a note for our unit.
Get out and visit other units, near and far. We all love
visitors, meeting and making new friends. So look at all the
options listed in the Blue Beret and invite yourselves along.
Safe Travels and Happy Times from Region 6.

REGION http://region7.wbcci.net
Hi. My name is Pete Yanke. This is my first column as the
newly installed President of Region 7. Some of you already
know me, many of the rest I hope to meet in the next two
years. I am your voting representative at the International
Board of Trustees (IBT). I am your voice. Talk to me; share
your concerns and ideas. The region presidents control the
direction of the club.
There is a procedure in place for individual units to propose
changes as well as the IBT. It requires the majority of units in
a region to support a proposal. Region 7 is in a unique position
as there are only the three units. It means we can probably
move a lot faster than some of the larger regions. Our region
vote counts as much as a large region.
On to other musings…
I already need to beg forgiveness. It is somewhat interesting to write an article in current tense for a future printing.
I am sure I will slip up. These articles need to be submitted
6 weeks prior to publishing. With that in mind, if you have
something to be included get it to me early.
By the time this prints, the International and Peace Garden
Rallies will be over. The Tall Ships will be approaching quickly.
Look for some fall camping on the unit calendars. Also check
your neighbor unit calendars. Installation rallies are coming
up. If you are lucky enough to be travelling in January, check
out the IBT rally. We have enjoyed them immensely. It gives
you a chance to know the people that direct our club.
Go to other unit/region rallies and caravans. Use courtesy parking. Kathy and I had a great time this past winter.
We attended a unit rally at NTAC. We also caravanned with
some folks from the San Antonio area to the Region 9 rally
in Shawnee, OK. Region 9 president, Andy Selking and wife
Barb, put together a great time. (Oops… I did it. Andy is now
the past president.) We spent some quality time with Joe Long
and Gayle Ketchum near San Antonio. Roll them wheels. Go
visit some other folks.
As always...travel safe.

REGION http://region8.wbcci.net
John Shedd once wrote “A ship in harbour is safe, but
that is not what a ship is built for.” Likewise an Airstream in
storage is not what IT was built for. Are you getting the most
out of your Airstream product by being involved in rallies,
caravans and travel as often as possible? There are so many
opportunities to be involved both locally and long distance.
Are all of you aware that you may participate in any rally in
any locale by contacting the hosts listed in the Event section of
the Blue Beret? Of course there may be times that adding to a
planned rally may not be feasible, but most of the time you will
be a welcome addition, find new friends, and be involved in
new experiences. A few years ago we were going to be in St.
Louis for some warranty work on our trailer and had noticed
that the Greater St. Louis Unit was having a Spring Tune-Up
Rally at the same dealership and same time. Upon contacting
one of the hosts, we were enthusiastically invited to join in
their activities, tours, and meals and had a great time meeting
new and old acquaintances. This past spring at a rally with
two Region 8 units, a full-timer couple contacted the hosts
and were a delightful addition to that rally. They were able
to renew some old friendships, meet new people and join in
the group’s activities. So, as you travel to other areas, look
for Airstream activities that you might want to be involved in.
By now the 2016 International Rally at Lewisburg, WV is
history with new leaders in place. As we know, the Rally was
fully booked quite early. Region 8 had 42 members registered
this year with many of them being Early Workers. Many
activities, tours and seminars were available for everyone.
Start planning now to attend the 2017 Rally.
With the plant in Jackson Center expanding, new products
being unveiled, and a globally expanding club, it is an exciting
time to be an Airstreamer. Look for ways that you, too, to
become personally involved.

As I write this, I am watching the rain here at the International Rally in Lewisburg, West Virginia. I think the rain
must have followed us from Houston. We are parked at the
fairgrounds here in Lewisburg and still waiting for several
hundred units to arrive. The many volunteers who work endless hours to make the International Rally a success are truly
special people. When you read this, Andy Selking will have

Andy and Barb deserve a big thank you for their effort the

tours and a golf scramble. There is no electricity on site. Quiet
generators are allowed. Water is available. All activities are

to everyone as they are homeward bound from Montana, or
continuing onto another adventure!
WA Unit President, Norm Bahl (and Sylvia) and members
will be hurrying home for the Salmon Rally the very next

hurrying back to Oregon to attend one of the 21 Unit rallies
that they scheduled for the year in hopes of meeting all of
their 200+ members. Jim Kolhoff, North Cascade WA Unit
President, will “Rest Awhile” in Hoodsport, Washington.
Actually, “Rest Awhile” is the name of the RV Park where
the NCW Unit will hold a rally.
Idaho starts our Region’s Installation Rallies (is it that
time already?) with a rally in Cascade. Next is the BC Unit
who will have their Installation rally in Merritt. The Montana

49th “Hands Across the Border” joint installation rally at the

Even though August is already here and the children are
dreading returning to school, there are still exciting things
ahead in Region 11. The Denco Unit will be hosting a Special Event Rally in Yuma, CO for “Old Threshers Days” on
September 8–11, 2016. This event offers a unique chance to
see lots of antique farm implements and memorabilia, tractor
pulls, great food and just a generally good family time for
all. Attendees will be able to stay on the Fairgrounds and be
within easy walking distance of all the activities. You can
find further information and an online Rally coupon at http://
www.wbcci-denco.org/. While you’re on the internet be sure
and check out the Utah Unit at http://utah.wbcci.net/. Our
new(ish) Unit is active and is committed to making sure that
their members enjoy their truly beautiful state. If you get the
chance to visit Utah and find yourself near Moab, you can
experience two of the most magnificent parks in the National
Park system. Arches and Canyonlands National Parks have
breathtaking scenery that will cause you to max out your
camera’s SD card and leave you arguing with your Significant
Other as to which is best. There are numerous RV friendly
commercial campgrounds in the area with full hookups along
with dry camping available in the National Parks and BLM
land. Westerners are used to being able to see long distances
but these parks give you a chance to really stretch your eyes.
September and October are busy times of year for the area
so be sure and make reservations. August can be a hot time
of the year for Region 11 so I recommend visiting any of
our mountain areas. Every state in the Unit has areas where
you can escape the dog days of summer and enjoy the cool
breeze and even cooler nights found at the higher elevations.
I guess the variety of scenery and climate helps makes our
Region special and a wonderful area to visit. I’ll leave you
with a quick reminder to put our Region 11 Rally on your fall
planning list. The “Ruidoso Roundup” Region 11 Rally will
be held October 5–9, 2016 in beautiful Ruidoso, New Mexico.
At an elevation of 6920 ft., Ruidoso is a mountain resort town
in the Sierra Blanca Mountains of south central New Mexico
and should be a wonderful time for all.

The Airstream Club International - WBCCI Europe, surely
the most international part of the WBCCI. Writing this in June,
we now cover 11 countries with 50 member Airstreams. 11
sounds a lot but we are not resting. There are 47 countries, 28
of them in the European Union. We don’t know how many of
them have Airstream owners but we keep looking.
The original seven members, who started WBCCI Europe
in October 2015, were a mix of ages and owned an even
split of vintage and European-spec Airstreams. That profile
has thankfully not changed and we are still attracting young
owners, couples with young children, dogs and cats as well
as the occasional retired full timers. Vintage Airstreams now
make up 46% of the Club and most of the 54% newer ones
are to the European specification.
Europe has 23 official national languages! Our website
is still “work in progress” and soon it will be structured into
four languages, German, French, English and Dutch/Flemish.
Although English is now used in most countries, we do have
members who don’t speak it. We are not an English club
and we want to avoid giving that impression. Members have
been great at volunteering to translate pages into their own

Blue Beret / August 2016 Justin Humphreys
Greetings from your extended family here in Jackson Center, OH. I am writing
this month’s article after celebrating the 4th of July over the weekend. Summer is in
full swing here in Ohio!
When I last wrote an article for the Blue Beret, I reported that April was the largest
single month for retail sales by our dealers since the 1970’s. Everyone here at Airstream was thrilled about the big month for our dealers. Since April, we have broken
that record twice! So May and June are now the two largest retail months on the
books since the 1970’s for our dealers. This is critical as these numbers represent what
customers are actually buying from our dealers. As you can imagine, we are thrilled
at how the summer has started and the fact the last three months represent the three
largest we have had in over 30 years.
Airstream held its annual National Dealer Meeting in Columbus, OH, this past May.
It was a great event and allowed us to bring the dealers to Jackson Center, OH, where
they were able to see firsthand our many plant expansions. During the dealer meeting
we introduced a new travel trailer that we will launch to the public in September. The
dealers had to sign a non-disclosure to see it. I am happy to report they loved it and
it gave us many more orders that we were anticipating. More to come later this year
on the product, I can’t wait to share more with each of you.
The month of June was a busy month for Airstream as well. We
began the month with the Alumapalooza rally here at the plant. I
saw many WBCCI members at this rally and enjoyed getting to
spend time with them. At the end of the month, I hit the road with
my family and had an Airstream Classic in tow as we attended the
International Rally in Lewisburg, WV. As many of you know, I am
from the great state of West Virginia and it was nice traveling on
familiar country roads. The club, as always, were great hosts and
made my family and I feel right at home. On one day, the family
and I volunteered to help the local Habitat for Humanity office
deal with flood damage. Seeing the devastation firsthand was unbelievable. However, I am convinced the community had the best
group possible in town for a disaster like this. The volunteering on behalf of the
club and the donations provided were unbelievable. Wally would have been proud!
The rest of the rally was great. I enjoyed staying in a brand new 2017 Classic,
and despite my efforts otherwise, everything worked! The club was nice enough
to even make me a sign for me. My kids thought it was pretty cool that we had
a sign in front of the trailer! Many members stopped by asking me what certain
devices were on the trailer. As you can imagine, we take the opportunity to test
a lot of new gadgets on the manager’s trailer. It allows us to use them firsthand
before launching them to the market. I am glad we do this as about 50% of the
products we test we do not end up using. However, the ones we like, we really like
and we have confidence offering them in new products because we know they work
having used them firsthand!
In closing, I would like to personally thank both Jim and Raisin Schwerdfeger for
their support over the past year. Despite a natural disaster, Jim handled the rally in
WV with poise and did a great job. Unfortunately, due to the storms, Airstream was
unable to provide ice cream like we normally do. However, Jim asked that we donate
the amount we would have spent on the ice cream to a local charity supporting flood
victims. Airstream was honored to do so and it showed what true leadership looked
like during a tough time. Thank you Jim and Raisin! I look forward to working with
Richard Girard over the coming year.
On behalf of 700 hard working families in Jackson Center, Ohio, I would like to
thank you for your business and passion for our products. It means the world to us all.
Happy Airstreaming!

Customer Relations Group
Greetings! As I write this article I am here in Lewisburg,
West Virginia attending the International Rally. It is great seeing
such a large number turn out for this event and I am glad I
had the opportunity to visit with many of you. I am having a
great time and I am glad I have the opportunity to bring our
small team and perform some service work, parts sales, etc.
There was some devastating flooding to this area just
before my arrival. My thoughts and prayers go out to all the
families who were impacted by this disaster and I hope they
have a quick recovery.
On the forums this past month I was reading a post from
an owner asking how and where he could jack up his trailer.
I will cover this along with stabilizer pad options and how
you can use them to actually help you change a tire if needed.
Where is the best place to jack up my trailer?
Airstream clearly marks jack points on all trailers by
adhering a “JACK” sticker under the trailers as seen below.
These labels point to the small aluminum plates riveted to the
underside of the trailer. These points mark the main frame rail.
The trailer should always be jacked up using the frame rail
and never jacked up on the axle. This could cause damage to
your torsion axle.
46
Blue Beret / August 2016 Am I able to jack the trailer up on any other point?
The line under the coach where the dark gray or black wrap
meets the light colored underbelly indicates the main frame
rail line. You can use a jack anywhere along this line.
Does Airstream provide a jack?
Airstream does not provide a jack with the trailer. On the road,
we would recommend a bottle jack as the best tool for the job
for ease of transportation and storage. In your garage at home,
a floor jack is acceptable to use. Using a piece of wood will
disperse the weight to avoid possible damage to the underbelly.
Can you tell me more about leveling blocks?
Leveling blocks can be used in a variety of applications.
The main use is obviously to place under the tires to get a good
level trailer, even when the ground at your campsite may not
be. Airstream sells two types of leveling blocks in our retail
store, HossPad and Lynx Leveler brand leveling pads. Both
of these pads can be purchased through the Airstream online
store at https://store.airstream.com/ under “Travel Trailer
Accessories” and “Exterior” or by contacting the Airstream
store by phone at 937-596-6111 ext. 7423.
Changing a tire using HossPads and Lynx Levelers
Another use of the pads or blocks is for use in changing
a tire while on the road on dual axle trailers. If you are in
an area where a jack is not able to be used, a stack of pads
can be used to raise a tire off the ground to change it. In the
pictures below, you can see how both the HossPad and Lynx
Levelers are used:
Tire

HossPads
The HossPad is a three-inone leveling agent. This pad can
be used for jacking, leveling and
parking. It is made from recycled
rubber, so it is a green product. It
conforms to the ground for use
in uneven terrain and provides
both absorption of vibration and
insulation from the ground. It
even works with motor home
leveling jacks.
Airstream sells two sizes,
Large and Extreme.
The Large measures 1" x 8.6"x
8.6" and has a capacity load per
pad of 20,000 lbs. (500 psi).
The part number for the large pad is 18686W.
The Extreme pad measures 1" x 8.6"x 11.5" and has a
capacity load per pad of 30,000 lbs. (500 psi).
The part number for the Extreme pad 18686W-01.
Lynx Levelers
The Lynx leveling
blocks are one of
the most popular RV
accessories. Their
modular design allows
you to stack them
in any configuration
for any terrain. Just
stack the levelers into
a pyramid shape to
the desired height
and drive onto them
to level the coach.
They can also be used as a support base for stabilizing and/
or leveling equipment.
Airstream sells a 10-pack of Lynx Levelers. They measure
8.5" x 8.5" x 1" and have a weight capacity of 40,000 lbs.
The part number for the Lynx Levelers is 150287W.

Once you have secured the gas line and checked it for leaks,
you will need to turn the gas back on and purge the lines. You
can do this at the stove by turning on a burner and holding a
flame near it until it lites.
Your furnace gas lines should also be purged by turning on
the heat. As a final check, use a gas leak detector and make
sure there are no propane leaks.

12 Airstreams attended an unofficial mini-rally in West
Sussex, England in May. We had a great time and it was
amazing to see a field of European Unit Airstreams with their
red numbers and Europe logo flags. We are looking forward
to the first WBCCI rally to be held outside North America,
in the South of France at BelRepayre. By the time you read
this, we will be bathing in the memories of the great event in
the 61 year history of the WBCCI. Wally would be proud!
Watch out for more about that in a future issue!

N-45-A STANDBY ONLY
NOR’ BY NOR’EAST CARAVAN
7/13-8/19/2016
START: ASHAWAY, RI
STOP: CORNWALL, PEI, CAN
The Nor’ By Nor’east National Caravan will begin in southern New England and end in Prince Edward Island, Canada. We begin the caravan
in RI and visit nearby Mystic Seaport, CT and Newport, RI. Plymouth, of
course is steeped in history; the “Plimoth Plantation”, Plymouth Rock,
Mayflower II, Jenny Museum are among the places we’ll visit. Boston’s
stop is a busy one with 2 days of bus rides from Topsfield into the Capitol.
All those sites you’ve read about in history books will be part of our journey. JFK Library, Bunker Hill, Freedom Trail, Faneuil Hall, etc. are just part
of what we’ll see. Continuing up the coastline to an ocean-side campsite in
Searsport, ME and then nearby Bar Harbor in Trenton will make you a firm
believer that Maine is indeed, beautiful. We’ll enjoy the Penobscot Marine
Museum, Fort Knox and the Penobscot Narrows Observatory and a Food
Channel approved ”Down East Style Lobster Bake”. We’ll camp nearby
FDR’s retreat at Campobello Island in NB, Canada, enjoy “Tea With
Eleanor” and then another campsite up the road in Moncton where we will
visit Hopewell Cape and see the exaggerated tides of the Bay of Fundy.
Nova Scotia’s 3 stops include campsites that will be home bases so we
can travel to Peggy’s Cove, Halifax, Louisbourg, Baddeck and of course
the Cabot Trail. We intend on being in NS for 11 days and we will see
everything and continue to eat too! A short trip across to Prince Edward
Island on a ferry and you will think you’re in Heaven. We have plenty of
time here for exploring and enjoying some entertainment in Charlottetown,
the warm waters along some of the most beautiful beaches as well as
seafood-PEI style. We will have our Farewell Banquet in Charlottetown.

N-45-H SOUTHWEST ADVENTURE
START: DURANGO, CO
8/20-10/10-2016
STOP: SANTA FE, NM
The 2016 Southwest Adventure Caravan will be in August, September, and October capturing the awesome beauty of the fall landscapes.
Beginning in Durango, we will visit the higher vistas first, before traveling
on to lower altitudes hoping to escape early snows. Bring clothes for
all climates! We will find what’s around the corner in this Four-Corners
region of CO, UT, AZ and NM, that tourists may not usually see, visiting
Indian pueblos, reservations and learning about their cultures from Native
guides. The grandeur of the scenery will amaze us as we ride the train up
the mountain to Silverton, Colorado, hike to the “Palace” in Mesa Verde
or bounce into Monument Valley. Moab, Utah offers gorgeous views in
the surrounding National Parks and excitement with “slick-rock riding” in
ultimate jeeps. Whether using a camera at Capitol Reef National Park or
riding a mule into Bryce Canyon the parks will captivate us. After seeing
the North Rim of the Grand Canyon we’ll spend a relaxing five days beside
Lake Powell, enjoy a boat trip to Rainbow Bridge, a raft float trip and a
tour through the unusual Antelope Canyon. Our final two weeks will take
us to New Mexico to explore Gallup, Albuquerque and Santa Fe. We will
have a chance to ride in a hot air balloon before going to the Albuquerque
Balloon Fiesta, trolley through Santa Fe, savor local cuisine and then
visit Taos. America the Beautiful Senior passes (formerly the Golden Age
Pass) will save you dollars for fees in Mesa Verde, Zion, Bryce, Capitol
Reef, Arches, Canyon lands, Chaco Canyon, and North Rim of the Grand
Canyon National Parks. Come prepared to have fun with your fellow

fiery debates occurred, walk where the Boston Massacre erupted, take
part in reenacting the Boston Tea Party (prepare to heave ho some British
tea into the Boston Harbor) and hear ranger talks on the Battle of Bunker
Hill; we’ll also visit other historic landmarks such as Faneuil Hall aka “The
Cradle of Liberty”, the Old North Church, Paul Revere’s house and the
USS Constitution, “Old Ironsides”. From there we travel to Minute Man National Historical Park and follow the day (April 19, 1775) that marked the
beginning of the war to independence from first blood on Lexington Green
to the “shot heard round the world” at North Bridge in Concord. Then we
travel to New York visiting Fort Stanwix National Monument in Rome, Oriskany Battlefield in Oriskany, and Fort Ticonderoga where Ethan Allen and
Benedict Arnold (before he turned traitor) led the “Green Mountain Boys”
in an easy victory over British forces. Saratoga National Historical Park
2016-2017 WBCCI National Caravans
where a decisive American victory convinced the French to support the
fledging nation also rates a visit as does the Bennington Battlefield in New
York as well as Vermont. We will charter a bus to West Point for a private
tour and lunch at the Officers’ Club followed by a visit to the New Windsor
Cantonment, General Henry Knox’s Headquarters, and an optional visit to
the National Purple Heart Hall of Honor. We will explore General Washington’s Headquarters at Newburgh then enjoy a tour-guided bus trip into
New York City where some sites are now sky scrapers but others are alive
and well such as Federal Hall and Fraunces Tavern and Museum where
we’ll have lunch. New Jersey is next with tours at Fort Lee, Morristown
National Historic Park, Washington Crossing State Park (and Washington
Crossing on the PA side), Monmouth Battlefield State Park, Princeton
Battlefield State Park and Old Barracks Museum in Trenton. Then into
Pennsylvania to Valley Forge National Historical Park in King of Prussia and Brandywine Battlefield Museum in Chadds Ford. Philadelphia
we’ll see via charter bus visiting Independence National Historical Park
for ranger talks and tours of Independence Hall, the Liberty Bell Center,
Franklin Center and dining at historic City Tavern. Our final destination will

N-46-M THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION – SOUTHERN
CAMPAIGN
9/6-10/14/17
START: NEW BERN, NC
STOP: WILLIAMSBURG, VA
From our school days, we all learned about the American Revolution –
the Boston Massacre, the Boston Tea Party, Patrick Henry’s “Give me
liberty or give me death” speech, and the harsh winter at Valley Forge.
We may have even memorized Longfellow’s poem about Paul Revere’s
midnight ride. But what about Alamance, Waxhaws, Kettle Creek, and
Kings Mountain? These were significant battles fought in the south, but do
you remember hearing about them? Join us as we delve into the lesser
known Southern Campaign of the American Revolution – where American
independence was actually won. We’ll begin in New Bern, NC where
we’ll visit Tryon Palace, the lavish home of the Royal Governor of North
Carolina (the term “palace” was bestowed by the tax-paying townspeople,
not the Governor); then we’ll travel down the eastern seaboard stopping in
Wilmington, visiting nearby Brunswick Town and Moores Creek; Charleston is next where we explore Fort Moultrie, Charles Pinckney’s home and
historic venues downtown; the History Museum and the Springhill Redoubt
will be our primary focus in historic Savannah; then we turn inland and
form a long oval going north through GA, SC, NC and VA. Besides those
battlefields listed above, we will tour Site Ninety Six; Musgrove Mill State
Historic Site; historic Camden; Kings Mountain; Cowpens; Guilford Courthouse; Old Salem, the charming Moravian community in Winston-Salem;
Red Hill, home of Patrick Henry; and Monticello, Thomas Jefferson’s
home. On the home stretch we will tour the new Yorktown Victory Center
and National Battlefield, site of Cornwallis’ surrender. The caravan will
end in historic Williamsburg with the final banquet at the Williamsburg
Lodge. In addition to infamous caravan cookouts, our dining experiences
will run the gamut from a rustic, backwoods gem on a creek, to historic
taverns, a seaport village dive, the oldest continually operating dinner theatre in America and everything in between. Leaders: Ed and Beth Jones,
