AIRCO CIRCULATION PUMP Regulating Use button (2) to set the desired temperature. The fan is switched off when a room has reached the desired temperature. Button (1) can be used to set (lower) the speed of the fan for more comfort. It takes longer for the room to reach a particular temperature when the fan speed is lower. ALARM STAND BY COOL vetus® Switching off Switch off the fan/thermostat function by using the on/off switch again. The cooling system is only switched off after all thermostats have been switched off. A control panel is situated on the system cabinet. This panel shows whether the system is on ‘Stand by’ or whether the cooling or heating function has been chosen on one or more thermostats. This switch allows a choice to be made between normal operation or operation only of the circulation pump and the raw water pump. - Switch to the right: Normal operation. - Switch to the left: Only the circulation pump and the raw water pump are in operation. Airconditioning systems AIRCO03, AIRCO05, AIRCO10 and AIRCO15 13.0102 5 4 Installation 4.0 Description of the system There is a cooling system in the system cabinet which can cool a liquid to a temperature between 3 and 8°C. The cooled liquid circulates through the ship in a system of pipes. A thermostat in the system cabinet regulates the cooling system. The heat which is removed from the circulating liquid is transferred to the raw water. One or more so-called fan-coil units are situated in each room. A fan-coil unit can be regarded as a radiator with a fan; the fan causes a flow of air past the radiator. The circulating liquid flows through the radiator in the fan-coil unit. When the fan is turning the flow of air past the radiator will be cooled. The air conditioning system can only function if there is a mains power supply. The power supply (230 V alternating current) must be supplied by a generator set or from a mains power supply from the shore. One thermostat is fitted in each room. Even if there are more than one fan-coil units in the room there is still only one thermostat. The thermostat is used to set the desired temperature for that room. The temperature in the room is controlled by allowing the fan(s) to work or not. A connection to the (battery) ship’s circuit (12 or 24 V) is necessary for the control of the system. 4 Room 1 Room 2 Room 3 VAC0033 AIRCO 22 24 20 26 18 o C vetus® AIRCO 3 22 24 20 26 18 o C 2 2 vetus® 3 3 AIRCO 22 24 20 26 18 o C 2 2 7 vetus® 7 7 Pipes for closed cooling liquid circuit 1 8 7 AIRCO 3kW WL 6 6 13.0102 5 Pipes for raw water circuit Condensation water drain Electrical connections, number of cores 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 Airco system cabinet Fan-coil unit Thermostat Expansion tank Raw water filter Raw water pump Mains power 230 V AC Ship’s battery circuit 12 V or 24 V Airconditioning systems AIRCO03, AIRCO05, AIRCO10 and AIRCO15 4.1 System cabinet 4.1.1 Scope of supply AIRCO03, AIRCO05, AIRCO10, AIRCO15 1 System cabinet with vibration dampers. 2 Installation set for raw water intake consisting of: Through-hull fitting, sea cock, water filter, pump with fitting brackets and necessary fittings. 3 Installation set for overflow tank consisting of: Overflow tank with filler stopper and necessary fittings. Make sure there is sufficient space around the system cabinet. When selecting a position make allowance for the cooling water intake. min. 100 mm min. 300 mm Prepare a solid base or console on a wall. Consider the stability when at sea bearing in mind the weight of the apparatus. Consult section 8 ‘Overall dimensions’ when determining the size of the base. The system cabinet must be positioned with the bottom parallel to the waterline. min. 600 mm Position the system cabinet on the vibration dampers delivered in order to prevent irritating vibration noise. 5 kW vetus® AIRCO VAC0003 4.1.3 Cooling water circuit The cooling system condenser is water cooled. The necessary raw water must be supplied by a separate pump. In order to protect the water pump from dirt the water must be drawn in through a through-hull fitting fitted with a water scoop and the cooling water filter which is supplied. A sea cock must be fitted onto the water intake (through-hull fitting with water scoop). After passing through the condenser the water is discharged outside through another through-hull fitting. The water filter must be underneath the waterline; the water pump is not self-priming! Water pump The water intake (through hull fitting with water scoop) must be positioned where a continuous supply of water is guaranteed under all circumstances. Near the bow, where turbulence can be created at higher speeds, is a less suitable place. The intake must also remain under water if the ship rolls. If air is drawn in instead of water not only is there insufficient cooling but the water pump can also be damaged by running dry. 1/2" - 20 mm 1/2" - 1/2" 3/4" - 3/4" 3/4" - 20 mm WL VAC0007 VAC0009 Position the through hull fitting in such a way that the sea cock fitted can be reached easily in order to open or shut it. The water pump is not self-priming and must be fitted underneath the waterline. The capacity of the water pump depends on the lift height and decreases as this increases. The maximum lifting height is 3 m. Fit the through hull fitting with the grooves pointing forwards. Use a sealer when fitting the through-hull fitting. Fit the pump using the brackets supplied and with the OUT connection as shown in the drawing. Fit the hose columns using a liquid sealer (e.g. Loctite® 577 or Threebond® 1110B) or using teflon tape. AIRCO10 / AIRCO15 Hose connections • Use flexible hoses, diameter 20 mm, for the connections between the water intake and discharge and the system cabinet. • Keep the hoses as short as possible and with as few bends as possible. See section 4.3, Closed liquid circuit, for notes and details with reference to the liquid pipes. Connect the liquid pipes to the hose columns as shown in diagram 5. 4.1.5 Condensation water drain • Make sure that the hoses do not put any pressure on the raw water pump housing. • Only use water and soap, thus no fatty or oily products, to make fitting the hoses to the hose connections easier. • Use 2 corrosion resistant steel hose clamps for each hose. After launching Check all connections for leakage immediately after launching. It is not necessary to bleed the system. As soon as the pump turns it will draw in water and fill the system. VAC0107 While the cooling installation is in operation condensation will form in the system cabinet and this condensation water must be discharged outside. Use hose with diameter of at least 10 mm for the condensation drain. The connection for the condensation drain is fitted with G 1/4” int. Use a hose pillar suitable for the hose diameter used. Always fit the hose downwards and without sharp bends. 10 13.0102 Airconditioning systems AIRCO03, AIRCO05, AIRCO10 and AIRCO15 Connecting 4.1.6 Electrical connections to system cabinet The installation must be connected to both a generator set or power supply from the shore and to the batteries. The generator set or the power supply from the shore supplies the necessary energy for the cooling installation. A See table 1 for the power required. The voltage shown on the type label of the system cabinet (230 V) must be the same as that of the power supply. The battery supplies the necessary energy for the control of the installation. The system is suitable for both 12 Volt or 24 Volt. See table 1 , Voltage and power consumption, for the power consumption. VAC0011 Remove the cap, pull out plug ‘A’ (strip cable) in order to be able to take the cap off completely, and connect the system cabinet. Do not forget to put plug ‘A’ back again when replacing the cap. Connect the system cabinet as shown in the diagram. The fan-coil units should preferably be positioned a small distance above the deck, directly behind a partition in which there is an air intake grating. If this is not possible then make a duct from an air intake grating positioned low down to the air intake side of the fan-coil unit. The fan-coil units must be positioned with the bottom, the driptray, parallel to the waterline. 2 Fit the fan-coil unit against a partition. 1 VAC0089 1 Fan-coil unit with assembly supports, cable pull relief and necessary fittings. 2 T-pieces 25 - 16 - 25 mm VAC0043 4.2.3 Air intake grating 6 The air intake grating must have a net opening of at least 300 cm2. 5 An air filter, size 20 x 20 cm, is fitted on the intake side of the fancoil unit. Make sure that this air filter is readily accessible since this makes regular checking of the filter easy. (A dirty filter must be replaced.) Therefore it is preferable to use a grating with build-in dimensions of at least 20 x 20 cm. 4 1 2 VAC0021 1 2 3 4 14 Air intake grating Air filter Fan-coil unit Air outlet opening 13.0102 3 5 Insulated air hose 6 Air outlet grating Airconditioning systems AIRCO03, AIRCO05, AIRCO10 and AIRCO15 However, it is preferable to choose an air outlet grating with a larger net opening. This reduces the speed of the air being discharged and consequently reduces the noise level. 4.2.4 Air outlet The air outlet grating must be placed as high as possible and not directly next to an air intake grating. The air hose must be insulated in order to prevent condensation. VAC0018 C It is also possible to split the outlet hose into two, each with their own outlet grating. C A A A C 4.2.6 Condensation water drain C B A The air outlet opening of the fan-coil unit can be positioned in 3 different ways. The position of the opening can be altered in the following way: - Loosen the 4 screws (A) and remove the drip-tray (B). - Loosen the 4 screws (C), position the fan housing as required and refit the parts in the reverse order. VAC0022 4.2.5 Air outlet grating, air hose While the cooling installation is in operation condensation will form in the fan-coil unit and this condensation water must be discharged outside. The fan-coil unit is provided with 2 G 1/4” internal connections. Fit both hose pillars (G1/4” x 13 mm) or 1 hose pillar and 1 blind plug. VAC0044 Connect the air outlet opening to an air outlet grating using an insulated air hose with diameter 75 mm. • If the fan-coil unit is positioned at least 40 cm above the waterline, a pipe can be led directly to a through-hull fitting, situated on or above the waterline. • If the fan-coil unit is positioned under or less than 40 cm above the waterline, the condensation water must be led to a lower placed collecting tank. This tank or tray can be automatically emptied by means of a bilge pump connected to a level switch. Use hose of diameter 13 mm for the condensation drain. Always fit the hose downwards and without sharp bends. The air outlet grating must have a net opening which is at least as big as the cross-section of the air hose: 44 cm2. Airconditioning systems AIRCO03, AIRCO05, AIRCO10 and AIRCO15 13.0102 15 4.2.7 Electrical connections Check that the voltage, recorded on the type label on the fancoil unit, agrees with the voltage on board (230 V). Power consumption of the fan is 135 VA at maximum speed. Speed control The fan-coil unit is supplied without (fan) speed control. One speed control, including fitting material, is supplied with each thermostat, see 4.4.1. One thermostat is positioned in each room. Fit the speed control into the fan-coil unit (or into one of the units if more than one fan-coil unit is used). Loosen the connections block and cut the wires loose. Fit the speed control using the fitting materials supplied. Connect the fan-coil unit as shown in diagram 7. VAC0020 The cable from the thermostat to the speed control must have a ferrite core, see also 4.4.3 . Expansion tank The expansion tank is included in the materials supplied with the system cabinet. An expansion tank must be placed in the return pipe of the closed liquid circuit. The expansion tank also functions as filler tank. The expansion tank must be positioned at the highest point of the complete installation. When fitting the hoses take account of the following points: • Keep the connecting pipes as short as possible in order to limit the resistance in the hoses. • Fit the hoses in such a way that the risk of external damage or attack by chemicals or high temperatures is as low as possible. • Protect hoses that have to pass through partitions with leadthroughs or special couplings. • Bends must not have kinks, a kink restricts the free flow of the liquid. Minimum bend radius: - Hose 16 mm diameter: 130 mm - Hose 25 mm diameter: 200 mm • Always fix the pipes with brackets; distance between brackets ca. 50 cm. VAC0090 Fit the expansion tank against a wall and fit the hose columns. Cooling liquid pipes The connections between the system cabinet, the fan-coil units and the expansion tank must be made with hoses. Use insulated hose for this in order to prevent condensation. The hose must be suitable for cooling liquids and for temperatures from -25°C to +80°C and a pressure of 2 bar. Vetus supplies suitable hoses and insulation materials for this. Hose ø 16 mm, art.code: CCHOSE16. Hose ø 25 mm, art.code: CCHOSE25. Insulation tubing for hose CCHOSE16, art.code: CCOVER16. Insulation tubing for hose CCHOSE25, art.code: CCOVER25. • Shortening hoses must be done by cutting. Never shorten these by sawing (sawdust can enter the system and cause problems) or by pinching (the hose can be too deformed). • Use good quality hose clamps at every hose connection. Hoses with internal diameter of 25 mm must be used for the main supply and return network through the ship. Hoses with internal diameter of 16 mm must be used for the main supply to the fan-coil units. The hose connections on the system cabinet, the expansion tank and the fan-coil units are the correct sizes for this. - System cabinet: ø 25 mm - Expansion tank: ø 25 mm - Fan-coil units: ø 16 mm VAC0106 • In order to prevent the formation of condensation between the hose and the insulation tubing, the ends of the insulation tubing on the hose should be sealed off with tape. T-pieces 2 T-pieces 25-16-25 mm are supplied with every fan-coil unit in order to simplify the fitting. The last T-pieces are used as reducing pieces, from 25 to 16 mm. Fit the caps supplied on any 25 mm connections on the T-pieces which are not being used. The installation is filled at the highest point, the expansion tank. The installation must be filled with a cooling liquid or with a water/anti-freeze mixture. See 7.1 Cooling liquid specification. VAC0092 Never fill the system just with water. The quantity of liquid required depends on the size of the installation, the number of fan-coil units and the total length of the piping. See 7.2 for the quantity of cooling liquid required. Turn the screw in the bleeder nipple a half or a full turn anticlockwise. Close the bleeder nipple as soon as cooling liquid begins to escape. 1 Fill the expansion tank with cooling liquid. Begin to remove the air from the fan-coil units when no more liquid flows out of the expansion tank. Keep filling the expansion tank while removing air if the liquid level has dropped. VAC0093 After all the fan-coil units have had the air removed fill the expansion tank to about halfway. There is a switch on the operating panel of the system cabinet which allows a choice to be made between normal operation and only operation of the circulation pump and the raw water pump. While removing the air keep the liquid level just under the topmost hose connection. When the pump is switched on you can then see whether the liquid is circulating. 2 Turn the ‘circulation pump’ switch to the left, the LED next to VAC0059 the switch will now light up. Only the circulation pump and the raw water pump can now operate; the cooling compressor will not be switched on. Check the entire system for leaks. AIRCO CIRCULATION PUMP ALARM AIRCO CIRCULATION PUMP STAND BY COOL vetus® ALARM VAC0045 STAND BY 3 Start the system. Switch on the power. Operate the on/off switch on one of the thermostats; the LED ‘cooling’ on the thermostat will now light up. The circulation pump and the raw water pump will now function 22 13.0102 Airconditioning systems AIRCO03, AIRCO05, AIRCO10 and AIRCO15 but the cooling compressor will not be switched on. 4 Now put the ‘circulation pump’ switch to the normal position (to the right). • Check that the raw water pump is operating and that the raw water circuit has no leaks. • Check in the expansion tank that the cooling liquid is circulating and check the cooling liquid circuit for leaks. AIRCO CIRCULATION PUMP ALARM AIRCO CIRCULATION PUMP STAND BY COOL vetus® ALARM VAC0061 Leave the system running in this way for some time after the check has shown that both circuits are functioning correctly. If the check shows that there is no circulation in one of the circuits then handle as follows: VAC0049 STAND BY The cooling system is then switched on and the liquid will be cooled. Now check the working of the complete system. Raw water circuit: - Check that the sea cock is open. - Check that the pump is underneath the waterline. - Disconnect a hose from the pump to the system cabinet in order to remove the air; the hose should now fill up with water. - Check that the pump is running. Setting the installation All the necessary settings for the various parts of the installation have already been carried out. The button on the thermostat can be used by the user to set the speed of the fan of the fan-coil unit. Cooling liquid circuit: - There may b e an air bubble in the pump; switch the pump off and on. - The pump rotor is jammed because it has not been used for a long time: - Switch off the power. - Remove the cap on the system cabinet which covers the electrical connections. - Remove the rubber blanking cap. - Remove the front plate from the system cabinet. - Remove the circulation pump cover plug. - Put a screwdriver in the pump and turn the rotor. Any air left in the system will leave it via the expansion tank. This will cause the level in the expansion tank to drop, so that the tank must be regularly refilled. When the level of liquid in the expansion tank no longer drops the system is completely full. The fan will rotate with a pre-set minimum speed when the thermostat button is set to the lowest position. min. 95 V AC VAC0068 This minimum value can be set on the speed control pcb fitted in the fan-coil unit. If this setting is altered allowance must be made for the fact that the minimum voltage on the fan must be at least 95 V alternating current! Now fill up the expansion tank to above the topmost connection (ca. 2/3 of the total height). VAC0060 After a few weeks check the level in the expansion tank and refill if necessary. Fill the raw water system with cleaning vinegar (8 %) in order to do this. 5.1 Cleaning raw water filter Regularly check whether the cooling water filter is dirty. Clean the cooling water filter as often as is necessary, depending on how dirty the sailing water is, but at least once per half year. A dirty cooling water filter can cause a higher temperature than normal or overheating of the cooling installation. AIRCO Shut the sea cock before removing the lid using the key provided. A VAC0070 VAC0069 Check that the lid is shut properly after cleaning and replacing the lid. 5.2 Air intake filter, fan-coil unit In order to fill the raw water system with cleaning vinegar handle as follows: - Shut the sea cock. - Remove both hoses (intake and outlet). - Temporarily remove the zinc anode ‘A’ in order to be able to drain the raw water system completely. - Connect short pieces of hose on the intake and outlet connections. These hoses must point upwards. - Now fill the system with cleaning vinegar. See table 2 for the quantity required. - Leave the vinegar in the system for at least 2 days before draining it out again. - Reconnect the intake and outlet hoses.
