Season Sponsors BOOM 5 WELCOME The Arts Club first presented Rick Miller to great success at the Stanley Theatre (as it was then known) in 2000 with his one-man show MacHomer. We have followed his various one-man creations with great interest since, but were not able to find the right time to present him until now, in partnership with the PuSh International Performing Arts Festival, as our annual copresentation. BOOM uses multimedia in a fascinating way—and once more we are treated to an inspired look at a generation that has experienced so much. With the world seemingly in disarray with so much turmoil, it is timely to have a multitalented creator like Rick remind us of the roots of what has been called the “greatest” generation. As we enter 2016, we must take a moment to look around us and marvel at what we have here on the West Coast, in one of the most desirable cities to live in on the planet. At the Arts Club, we’re also marvelling at collaboration. We’ve moved our administration offices, 6 BOOM wardrobe shop, and most production rehearsals to a shared space with Bard on the Beach at the BMO Theatre Centre in the Olympic Village. (It also happens to be the home of the Arts Club’s newest addition to our theatre family, the Goldcorp Stage, so come check it out if you haven’t already!) Neither we nor Bard would be in a new home if it wasn’t for our collaboration. Equally, the PuSh International Performing Arts Festival recently moved to their new home at The Post at 750, behind the CBC building. And they share their space with Music on Main, DOXA, and Touchstone Theatre, all of whom worked together to create their new space. It’s been an amazing couple of years for arts collaboration in this city and that can only be a good thing. The more not-for-profits like us and PuSh work together to create and present art on this city’s stages, the better for a more creative and imaginative community surrounding it. Thank you to Norman Armour and his great team at PuSh, and thank you for being here for tonight’s collaboration between the Arts Club, the PuSh Festival, and Rick Miller. Bill Millerd Artistic Managing Director Peter Cathie White Executive Director ARTISTIC DIRECTOR’S CIRCLE The Arts Club Theatre Company relies on your philanthropic support to ensure the strength and vitality of the company. As a non-profit arts organization, the Arts Club could not exist without the generosity of our individual donors. Ticket sales cover only a portion of our production costs, so we rely on community gifts to close the gap. Please consider joining us by becoming a member of the Artistic Director’s Circle today. BOOM 7 A MESSSAGE FROM THE PUSH FESTIVAL Congratulations are in order. All of us at PuSh stand and applaud! Bill and his team have pulled off something truly extraordinary. The creation of a new theatre is an auspicious event—of a magnitude, meaning, and reach that is… well, even spiritual. The Goldcorp Stage at the BMO Theatre Centre is a remarkable achievement and a spectacular addition to the region’s cultural infrastructure. The makeup and largesse of our city has shifted ever so slightly, and we are all now a little richer and for it. And we will be for many, many years to come. The act of envisioning this grand new edifice has brought together two venerable institutions. The teaming up of the Arts Club with Bard on the Beach has given us a sparkling new place for community making, offering up exciting new opportunities to express our communal imagination. It’s fitting that this glorious new facility was completed under the watch, and watchful eye, of Peter Cathie White, the ACTC’s new Executive Director. Theatre is nothing if not a team sport—a collective willing of imagination; of possibility; of reality making. On the stage we may be drawn to find what is familiar: our desires and vanities, our pains and joys—a fully drawn picture of ourselves; at other times, perhaps, we hope to find a different world, a different self, something decidedly “other”, a wholly different reflection facing us. In both instances, we learn something of ourselves through an artist’s creative vision, through the lens they fashion of the forces at play in ourselves and in our world(s). Mad Men’s Don Draper famously pitched that our lives were a carousel of memories and images. BOOM too is a carousel; one that could not be imagined without a century documented by the journalist’s trade, photography, broadcast media, and publications such as LIFE, Maclean’s, Rolling Stone, and the like. Rick Miller is a virtuoso. As the creative force behind BOOM, he is what’s commonly referred to as a triple threat. Well... actually that’s not completely true, because in addition to being a consummate actor, mover, and singer, Miller is a brilliant mimic. Anyone lucky enough to have caught a performance of MacHomer (his dexterous Simpsons take on the Scottish play), can attest to his dizzying skills. Yet he just as serious as he is mischievous, and is a long-time collaborator of one of the theatre’s great auteurs, Robert Lepage. Miller shares with Lepage a sense of the “alchemical.” They are at heart magicians. And like Lepage’s, Miller’s art shimmers and flickers. Rick Miller is a man of the theatre. I entreat you to sit back, or lean in… for no matter what your disposition, or what you may be wishing to find, you are in for a treat—the thrilling experience of a true artist, a performer, and an entertainer. Norman Armour Artistic and Executive Director, PuSh International Performing Arts Festival BOOM 9 WRITER’S NOTES “That men do not learn very much from the lessons of history is the most important of all the lessons of history.” — Aldous Huxley (1959) I’m a storyteller, not a historian. Historical facts only interest me inasmuch as they help tell a story, for stories are how we learn from our mistakes—and from each other. BOOM is a collage of stories that I’ve been documenting about the generation that immediately preceded me: stories of the famous and the not-so-famous; stories of the living and the no-longer-living. Each story in itself might be worthy of a full play, but in this case I’ve chosen to paint them into a larger picture. My hope is that by spiraling through 25 tumultuous years (1945 to 1969), we can all gain perspective not only on who we were, but who we are now and where we’re going. Think of BOOM as a living, breathing time capsule. It starts with a “boom,” it ends with a “boom.” I hope it stirs up your own stories, so that we can share them together in the lobby after the show. Explosively yours, Rick Miller M.J. JEWELLERS LTD. His first years there were spent as the head stage technician in operas and large-scale touring productions. In 2012, a first occasion arose in which he could combine his passion for work and travel: he began to tour with Lepage’s acclaimed Andersen Project in the United States. Since then, his taste for ‘the road’ has only multiplied. He began working as a stage manager and technical director on smaller projects, notably with québécois companies touring youth theatre to Eastern Canada. Always on the hunt for new challenges, Olivier then joined Rick Miller’s BOOM team as the stage and production manager, no small feat given the show’s technical complexity. of Why Not Theatre, a Toronto based company with whom he has produced and created over 18 productions, which have played in over 20 cities around the world. Acting credits include the Dora Award-winning SPENT and A Brimful of Asha. His company was in residence at the Theatre Centre when he developed I’m So Close (winner of Spotlight Award at SummerWorks 2009). He has assisted notable directors Daniel Brooks, Richard Rose, and Jennifer Tarver. Ravi directed Nicolas Billon’s triptych of plays (Greenland, Iceland, and Faroe Islands) entitled Fault Lines, which was awarded The Governor General’s Literary Award for Drama 2013. In 2011 Ravi was a member of the DiverseCity Fellows program, which aims to diversify leadership across sectors in Toronto. Ravi is on the programming committee for the Daniels Spectrum, the artist advisory committee for ArtReach Toronto and he sits on the Board of Directors for the Laidlaw Foundation. He was recently awarded the 2012 Pauline McGibbon Award, is a resident artist at Soulpepper Theatre Company and was the inaugural Artistic Director-inResidence at the Theatre Centre. He was selected to be part of the roster of clowns for Cirque Du Soleil.
