Lagan Concrete take Health Challenge
The inaugural Lagan Concrete Health Challenge began this year with great success.
At the beginning of Week 4 we invited Mary
Carmody back for our half way weigh-in to see
what progress if any was being made on the
scales. Everyone was happy with their results.
For weeks 5, 6 and 7, teams continued to
get out and train together with team Alice
continuing to lead the way. On Week 8, we
had our final weigh-in and a fitness test, with
points given for every pound lost and every rep
improved from the first fitness test.
This year Lagan Concrete started the Lagan
Health Challenge with 24 employees signing up
for the 8 week challenge. The aim of the
challenge was to make people aware of the
health benefits of exercise and a healthy diet.
The challenge began on January 17th, with teams
picked and weighed in by nutritional consultant
Mary Carmody who did a demonstration and gave
advice on nutrition (a few of us came out realising
there was a lot of work to be done).
The concept for teams to score points required
them to train together and post a picture as
proof of training on a facebook page. After 2 to
3 weeks it was clear this competition was going
to get serious with some teams training 5 and 6
days a week. Team Alice went into an early lead
with Team Dave, and Team Declan battling for
2nd place. In conjunction with the team training
sessions, we also visited some local gyms for
group sessions with a lot of red faced and tired
looking bodies coming out after them.
It all came down to the final day, with Team
Alice and Team Declan in contention, Team
Alice holding out for victory. Overall the
challenge was a great success with a total
loss of 90 pounds in bodyweight and huge in
improvement in fitness with everyone. The
challenge gave a better understanding of
the importance of health and well being, and
improved morale among the participants.

BBC documentary
A recent BBC News Scotland report on the construction of the M8
project featured the surfacing work done by Lagan Asphalt UK crews
and staff on a section of the M8 mainline works.
Lagan commence
Phase 2 of $6
Million PMB
Contract in Oman
The report details how work on the M8 began in 1965 and was the largest
infrastructure project in Scotland since completion of the railways. The final section
between Baillieston and Newhouse is well underway at a cost of £500 million to
be completed by 2017 and currently employing some 750 people. This will reduce
journey times between Glasgow and Edinburgh by 18 minutes. The report can be

Lagan Asphalt at Dublin Airport
Lagan Asphalt are currently surfacing on Dublin Airport Rehabilitation
Phase B on behalf of Kilwex Civil Engineering Ltd.
Lagan Asphalt and Kilwex have an excellent working relationship over the past 20
years. The Apron is situated alongside the busy intersection between Terminals 1
and 2 as high aircraft volumes manoeuvre and taxi to and from Runway 10-28. Due
to highly restricted airside location, extremely high security clearance and escorting
is required. All work zones are protected by Jet Blast Proof Fencing.
Lagan Asphalt will surface approximately 15,000m2 with Marshall Asphalt Base
and Binder Courses. The Wearing Course is CL 942 Surface Course. The wearing
course will be placed in ‘echelon’ to eliminate longitudinal joints. Works are being
completed during night time and day time shifts.
The contract was won in Feb 2014,
after an 11 month approval process. The
project involves the manufacture and
supply of PMB for a 40 km section of
a 6 lane expressway. This requires the
manufacture of approximately 22,000 MT
of PMB (including 2,000 MT of hot applied
PMB tack coat), over a 2 year period.
The project consists of the upgrade of
75km of the Bidbid to Sur highway in
the Sharqiya region of Eastern Oman.
The project will transform the single lane
Bidbid – Sur carriageway into a 6 lane all
weather motorway with design speeds up
to 120 km/hr.
Lagan is responsible for production and
quality of PMB as well as the purchase
of all polymers. Using a 70 MT per day
capacity plant Lagan manufactures PMB
which is fed directly into adjacent asphalt
plant. An on-site laboratory is used for QC
testing of PMB, tack coat and unmodified
base bitumen.
The Lagan team managing the project
are led by Dr Reza Shahmohammadi
and James Butler who oversees the
entire project and coordinates with the
contractor, suppliers, consultant, the
ministry and our partners Al Jazeera.
Phase 2 will run from February to May
2016 and the final phase is programmed
to be completed by December.

Lagan Asphalt and
Blacktop Tarmacadam
Company
Blacktop Tarmacadam Co. Ltd. has been a dedicated
surfacing subcontractor with Lagan Asphalt Ltd
since 1993.
Managing director Kevin Bissett notes: “My father Christy,
my brother David and I have worked in tarmacadam mostly
with Lagan Asphalt since we started up the company in 1993.
It’s very much a family business with seven family members
involved. Christopher Bissett Senior has since retired but is
still involved in the business, while David now runs Blacktop
Down Under in Brisbane. I started in tarmacadam in 1980,
having learned from my father, and we have a good few years’
experience now. My own sons Christopher Jnr. and Jason
are involved as well as my brother Thomas who manages our
Milling Division and nephew Blake, who has just joined.”

commence works on
N17/N18 Gort to Tuam
Lagan Asphalt commenced
surfacing works on the N17/N18
Gort to Tuam PPP Scheme (South
Section) in February of this year.
Lagan Asphalt acquire new Roadtec
Shuttle Buggy Material Transfer Vehicle
Lagan Asphalt has recently bought a new Roadtec shuttle buggy for use on the Gort
Tuam surfacing project. This is the third machine of its type in the company. Lagan
has been the first company in Ireland or the U.K. to use a buggy for surfacing. The
Shuttle Buggy® material transfer vehicle (MTV) is designed to “shuttle” between
the asphalt haul truck and paver. Thermal and material segregation problems are
eliminated thanks to the machine’s remixing action. The Roadtec Shuttle Buggy
also allows continuous paving, which leads to a much smoother surface. The
machine has a storage capacity of 25 tonnes, allowing smoother truck cycles and
reduced haulage costs. Truck unloading capacity is rated at 900 tonnes per hour and
paver loading capacity at 550 tonnes per hour.
The Roadtec Shuttle Buggy is the only machine that combines the benefits of a
remixing material transfer with unmatched reliability. Truck handling, temperature
and material segregation all contribute to poor pavement quality. The Shuttle Buggy
provides a solution for all of these issues by remixing material onsite while allowing
the paver to operate at a constant speed without stopping. The machine has an
inbuilt traffic light system to alert truck drivers when to dispatch material, move
away etc. It also contains an integrated spraying system to reduce build-up of tack
coat on tyres.
Lagan Civils up and running
Lagan (Civils) Ltd have hit the ground running on the first of two recently won
projects: The N21 Ballinlyny & Ballymurragh East Pavement Improvement Scheme
Co. Limerick is now well underway. The €2 million 12 week project is due for
completion in March of this year. Works comprise of minor realignments of the
existing N21 and include the installation of filter drain, surface water drainage and
soak pits, kerbing, safety barrier, top soiling, landscaping, resurfacing of existing
road, replacement of road markings and accommodation works. Due to the volume
of traffic on the N21 particular attention had to be given to traffic management and
Lagan (Civils) Ltd have worked together with Limerick City and County Council to
ensure the effects on the general public were minimised. As with every section of
the business, Health and Safety is paramount and this was demonstrated last week
with a favourable result of a Health and Safety Authority site audit.
Works are progressing under the stewardship of Jonathan McMahon and Lagan
Asphalt have recently commenced surfacing on site.
4
The project encompasses placement
of DBM Base, Binder and SMA surface
course to 22.3km of new build motorway
including mainline, slip roads, side roads,
roundabouts, footpaths and structures.
Lagan Construction are main contractors
for this section and they form part of
the ‘Direct Route’ consortium who
will design, build and operate the new
motorway to replace the existing N17 and
N18 between Gort and Tuam in Public
Private Partnership (PPP) with the National
Roads Authority (NRA). The scheme
bypasses several adjacent towns to
remove traffic bottlenecks. It is designed
to accommodate national through traffic
flows and will significantly improve safety
and reduce journey times for traffic
travelling north-south along the West of
Ireland. The new road will also improve
connectivity between the Western Region
and Dublin and will significantly assist in
the economic development of the BMW
(Borders, Midlands and Western) regions.
This is the largest infrastructural project in
Ireland at present.
The job will require placement of some
250,000 tonnes of bituminous materials
and is scheduled for completion in June
2017. The Lagan Asphalt management
team will be led by P.J. Kennedy and
Contracts Manager Ronan Hunt. Surfacing
crews will be supplied by our long serving
subcontractors, McManus Brothers
who have recently arranged purchase of
new paving equipment for the project.
Materials will be produced at Lagan
Macadam facility at O’Callaghans Mills,
Tulla Co. Clare under the watchful eye of
Anthony McNamara and his team.

GB Customers Visit Lagan Brick and Lagan Cement
As part of Lagan Cement Products strategy to grow the business in the GB market, we have been building
relationships with the various buying societies across the UK.
Our core target market is independent, often family owned,
merchant businesses. A large proportion of these companies
are part of buying societies to help increase their purchasing
power when buying building products.
Follow-up from the visit has been positive with new
customers coming on board as a result. We aim to host
similar visits in the future to build relationships with key
buying groups and customers.
The Timber Buying Group (TBG) is a new buying group
which already has almost 50 member companies, all of
which purchase the likes of roof tiles, cement and/or bricks.
After a number of meetings with TBG and their Director,
Allan Durning, the TBG team and interested members
visited the Lagan Brick plant in Kingscourt and the Lagan
Cement Plant in Kinnegad at the end of February.
Well done to all involved and a fantastic effort throughout.
The visitors were given a tour and presentation of the
brickworks before staying in Dublin and visiting the Cement
Plant the next day for a full tour and presentation. Feedback
from TBG has been excellent, the customers were very
impressed with the products and facilities but more
importantly by the enthusiasm of members of staff
they met.

After working through January and the busy shutdown
period Lagan Cement held a curry lunch to celebrate the
successful shutdown. Well done and thank you to all
employees involved.
Where a site achieves Zero Accidents and Zero Incidents
in a calendar month, all operatives on that site receive a
free breakfast. The purpose of the initiative is to highlight
the importance of achieving Zero Accidents and Incidents.
In November 2015, following an Accident and Incident
free October, the Site Management and the Health
and Safety Team visited the sites as part of the Safety
Breakfast initiative. During the Safety Breakfast, the
team used the opportunity to highlight the importance of
Health and Safety on site and the importance of Safety
Reporting.
Going forward, the initiative will provide opportunities for
sharing safety ideas, increasing safety communication and
highlighting the importance of Zero Harm.

Aughnish Alumina group visit Lagan
Following a visit of Lagan Staff to Rusal Aughinish Alumina, Limerick,
a return visit was arranged to include a group headed by John Coleman,
Alliance Facilitator at Aughnish and Chairman of The Irish Maintenance
and Asset Management Society (MEETA).
The fostering of relationships and sharing of knowledge across heavy industries
has proven to be very beneficial in terms of improvements and problem solutions.
Indeed, Aughnish facilitated with a spare part from their inventory during a recent
plant stop at Lagan, showing the fruits of such relationships.
The visit involved a presentation, Q&A discussion around best practices, planning,
cost management and maintenance strategy followed by a tour of the cement plant
and workshops.
Speaking following the visit, John Coleman remarked “Many thanks for the
hospitality we received last Wednesday. We all appreciate how much effort goes
into such visits. We found the visit useful and it was good to see such open and
honest sharing of information.”
The Irish Maintenance and Asset Management Society has been in existence
for over 25 years and has served the interests of the Maintenance and Asset
management community since the early 1980’s. MEETA is the national society
within Ireland and represents the Irish maintenance and asset management
community at national and international level.

Health and Safety Quiz in Lagan Cement Group
In December 2015, the Health and Safety Department ran a Health and Safety Quiz across all companies
in the Lagan Cement Group.
The questions were based around Health
and Safety Toolbox Talks that were
communicated throughout the year and
on recent Health and Safety Campaigns.
It was felt that the quiz would be a good
way to test our team’s knowledge on
Health and Safety as well as creating
some fun for each of the Departments.
With great interest and participation from
all in the Group, as well as awarding
some bragging rights, the Health and
Safety Quiz was a resounding success!

Lagan Homes brings warmth
to Newtownards with the
Lagan multi fuel stove
Lagan Homes is well underway at their Crawfordsburn
Meadows development located off Crawfordsburn Road
in Newtownards.
The site comprises traditionally styled large detached family homes.
When Crawfordsburn Meadows was in the planning stage, Lagan
Homes wanted to incorporate the traditional fireplace and feedback
from potential homebuyers of this size of house highlighted the desire
for an open fire in the lounge as an additional heat source as well as reincorporating the long-established focal point in their living room. Over
the years, the open fire has been designed out from new builds in order
to comply with new energy efficiency ratings set by building control. To
achieve the specification upgrade Lagan Homes have teamed up with
Lagan Chimney Systems and fitted the Lagan Dylan multi fuel stove.
The Lagan Dylan Stoves are up to three times more efficient than an
open fire. Studies show that an open fire is only around 30% efficient as
the majority of the heat is lost up the chimney which is basically an open
vent to the outside allowing drafts and heat to escape when not in use.
As well as adding the all-important focal point to your room they bring a
warmth and comfort to your home.
The stoves require less fuel to stay warm thus saving the homeowner
money!
The Lagan Dylan Stove adds to the character of the Crawfordsburn
Meadows living rooms, making it a statement feature to be enjoyed in
your home.

involved in the recent acquisition of two of the largest development sites
in Banger, Co. Down.
Lagan Homes have being working
with Coogan Architects resulting in
houses with traditional looking exteriors
combining family friendly layouts and
bright, modern interiors.
Off-plan sales of a limited number of
three bedroom semi-detached and
detached properties is now underway
from Reeds Rains Estate Agents in
Bangor. Prices range from £152,500 for
the D1, 3 bedroom semi-detached with
sunroom to £175,000 for the A house
type, 3 bedroom detached.
The sites both sides of the Rathgael Road
include the former Ards Borough council
recycling centre and the former juvenile
home. The land combined will deliver
over 600 high quality houses on lands
comprising approximately 70 acres which
will include extensive woodland and a 2
acre lake. This is the largest acquisition
of land by a private developer in Northern
Ireland since the 2007 property crash and
is estimated to have a total development
value of circa £100 Million.
Conor Mulligan, MD of Lagan Homes
remarked, “We are delighted with the
acquisitions of these sites in Bangor
which represent the first steps of our
strategy for expansion to significantly
increase sales numbers with the
purchase of key sites in Northern Ireland.
We have planning in place to immediately
commence Phase 1, a mix of 180 high
quality homes, which will be ideal for
first time buyers or those wishing to
downsize along with generous family
homes for those in need of the additional
space. Presently, the availability of new
build homes in the Bangor area is low
and we anticipate our new development
being welcome news to those from the
local area looking for a new home. These
600 houses are the first stage of our
strategic plan of expansion in Northern
Ireland and plans are already afoot to
double this with further acquisitions in
the near future.”
12
The first part of the development is to be
known as ‘Lynn Hall Park’, named after
the Irish-born architect William Henry
Lynn, who had a link with remodelling
Clandeboye House within the Clandeboye
Estate for Lord Dufferin. Construction at
Lynn Hall Park has already commenced,
with a sales and marketing home set to
open in Summer 2016.
The development will include substantial
upgrading of both the Rathgael Road
and Roundabout with potential to deliver
additional spin off to our ever competitive
sister companies.

Giving Something
Back Initiative
Lagan House are delighted to announce their chosen
charity for the coming year in our “Giving Something Back
Initiative”.
The overwhelming majority of nominations were for the Northern
Ireland Children’s Hospice. It is clearly a popular choice and a widely
respected organisation.
Northern Ireland Children’s Hospice is the only service of its type
within Northern Ireland caring for children and young people with very
complex needs. There are over 1,300 life-limited children and young
people and their families living in Northern Ireland who need the
specialist care that only a Children’s Hospice can provide. The Hospice
offers high quality care and support to children and young people with
life-limiting conditions and their parents and careers. The Hospice
aims to meet emotional, social and spiritual needs as well as physical
ones, enabling children and young people to make the most of their
lives within the limitations of their illness. As leaders in the field of
children and young people’s palliative care, the Hospice also provides
support, advice and education to professional colleagues from the
multidisciplinary teams involved in supporting a cohort of children
and young people with life-limiting conditions. Care is provided in the
child’s own home and the Children’s Hospices in Newtownabbey and
Fermanagh.
Double Planning
Success for Lagan
Homes England
Lagan Homes England were pleased to obtain
a double planning consent on the same day in
February.
The first consent was for an additional unit on
Stephen’s Close, Lechlade-on-Thames, Gloucestershire.
The development consists of twenty high specification
four and five bedroom units which have so far proved
very popular. The second consent was the approval for
a scheme of thirty-nine units at Crown Meadow, East
Hanney, Oxfordshire. The site was acquired in mid2015 on the basis of thirty-five units but in subsequent
meetings with the planning authority Lagan Homes
identified an opportunity to increase the density and
therefore value of the scheme. LH England is now
increasing their focus on future land opportunities that
are earlier in the planning process in order to continue
to maximise value enhancement, and they also have
a number of other planning applications currently
submitted awaiting determination.
Our fundraising has already commenced with Dress Down Friday
taking place on the first Friday of each month. In February we held a
Pancake Tuesday Breakfast at Lagan House and so far we have raised
£302.29.
Upcoming events:
Sunday 17 April – Mud Madness. Without a doubt the muddiest run
in N. Ireland. We have two teams from Lagan House taking part in
this event. Andrew Hirst, Jennifer McKenna, Paul McLaughlin, Debbie
Hollis, Stephanie Toal, Maria White, Campbell Toal, Sean Corvan,
Damien Toal and Padraig Rafferty. May the best team win!
Sunday 8 May 2016 - Europa Abseil Challenge. We are delighted
to announce that our Lagan House Directors, Chairman Kevin Lagan,
Seán McCann, Declan Canavan, Charlie Jenkins, Conor Mulligan and
Adrian Hanna are taking the plunge and abseiling 160ft down the
Europa Hotel. We wish them every luck for the event.
Any support for the charity will be appreciated and if you would like to
visit our JustGiving page, donations can be submitted with Gift Aid to
maximise the benefit. https://www.justgiving.com/Lagan-Group/

Students
Kingscourt Brick were delighted to welcome 33 first
year architect students and their lecturers to the
plant on the 3rd of March.
The day consisted of a presentation on the history of brick, the
manufacturing process and finally the versatility of clay brick.
The presentation was then followed by a comprehensive site
tour of the plant showcasing the recent investment. Each
person then got to make a handmade brick with their name
printed onto the brick. All thanks to Noel Duffy and the team
who organised for this to happen.
The bricks were then fired in the upgraded kiln and presented
to the class by the General Manager, Jody Guilfoyle.
Welsh Slate
Training by the (half) dozen
Six Welsh Slate employees have embarked
on training courses to further their continuing
professional development.
Three of them - general manager (architectural)
Markus Bischoff, sales office manager Scott Garner
and business innovation manager Mike Ford –
embarked on Construction Future Wales Level 5 in
the autumn. This course involves training in vision
and leadership, leadership and coaching, innovation
for construction, competitive advantage, finance, and
managing growth and performance.
Another three employees – minerals plant manager
Craig South, logistics manager Liam Hughes and
architectural supervisor Gwyndaf Roberts, began their
Level 3 training in February. This involves training in
leadership and management (including performance
management, team building and human resources),
coaching, lean construction and innovation, work
based learning, and financial and project management.
Left to right – John ‘Johnjo’ Jones, Tony Heaney and Keith Jones.
Recognised for going above and beyond
Five Welsh Slate employees have each won £50 vouchers in
recognition of their efforts to improve the way the company
does business.
Splitter James “Johnjo” Jones, who has been with the company for
eight years, was recognised for coming up with a modification to some
of the splitting stations to further control the levels of processed dust.
Engineer John Ford, who has been with the company for 12 years,
researched in his spare time recurring problems with a couple of the
auto dressers which meant a lot of re-works. He found a solution which
has since been implemented and has reduced the re-works. Quarry
operator Meirion Jones, who has been with the company for 29 years,
came in repeatedly during the Christmas holidays in atrocious weather
conditions to keep the water pumps running to ensure the quarry was
not flooded.
Left to right: Liam Hughes, Scott Garner, Markus Bischoff
and Mike Ford.
14
Fellow quarry operator Keith Jones, who has trained dozens of other
operatives over the years, came up with a variety of modifications to
reduce manual handling and increase productivity. Restoration manager
Tony Heaney, who has been with the company for eight years, was
asked to think of a way to showcase Welsh Slate products for a
prospective major customer. So he “built”, in a very short time, some
mock gardens using all of the products, photos of which were then sent
to the customer.

Welsh Slate
Welsh Slate helps a landmark gymnasium flex some
new muscles
Some 6,400 natural slates from Welsh Slate have helped restore to its former glory the roof of the first
purpose-built gym in England, now as a designer restaurant.
More than 600m2 of Welsh Slate’s
500mm x 300mm Penrhyn Heather
Blue County-grade slates have been
used on the main and clerestory
roofs and flank roofs of the dormer
windows of the Grade ll listed German
Gymnasium - a landmark in the King’s
Cross regeneration masterplan.
They were specified by architects
Allies and Morrison to return the roof
to its former appearance after the
original Welsh Slate roof (which is an
important early example of the use
of laminated timber to enable broad
spans) was removed and the building
was left with only a bituminous felt
covering across the structure. They
also match the slate roofs of the
adjacent St Pancras Station and Great
Northern Hotels.
The new roof over trusses up to 20m
wide was installed over four winter
and spring months by Attleys Roofing
who were reliant on multiple, small
deliveries due to the tight site, lack
of storage and range of materials
required to bring the roof up to today’s
standards – insulation, vapour control
layer, counter battens, felt and Welsh
slates.
After a 17-month rebuild the renovated
building was officially opened to
the public by restaurant group D&D
London in November (2015).
Originally designed by Edward
Gruning and built in the 1860s, the
German Gymnasium was influential
in the development of athletics in
Britain. The building cost £6,000 and
was funded solely by the German
community in London with the
intention of promoting strength-based
gymnastics for men and women.
The National Olympian Association
held the indoor events of the first
Olympic Games there in 1866 and
they continued there annually until the
White City Games in 1908.
After the First World War the building
was taken over by the Great Northern
Railway and converted to offices,
being sub-divided into cellular offices,
with first floor, staircase and internal
partitions inserted to divide up the
overall single volume.
Roof slates from Welsh Slate feature on a refurbished building at the heart of the regeneration
of Kings Cross.
It remained in the ownership of the
railway operators under various acronyms
until it was drawn into the overall
masterplan for the redevelopment of
King’s Cross. The earlier demolition of
the buildings around it and the emerging
context have allowed the public realm
surrounding it to become a more dynamic
space, the building becoming both a wayfinding landmark and a destination in its
own right.
Allies and Morrison were commissioned
by developer Argent to restore and
repair the fabric of the building to a shell
and core finish to enable subsequent
fit out by one of three shortlisted
restaurant operators. Conran and Partners
established the restaurant concept design
and completed the fit-out which includes a
new steel mezzanine and staircases.
Andrew Rixson of Allies and Morrison
said: “The design of the roof is
complicated by the increased depth of the
new roof build-up in that the additional
thickness of the roof sets the new slate
tiles above the level of the brickwork
details of the existing gable parapets.
“To resolve this, our design approach
separates the slates from the brickwork
by introducing hidden gutters, valleys
and leadwork detailing around the
perimeters of the roof. These details are
adapted into various different forms due
to the variety of conditions found within
the existing roof and the deformation of
the timber roof structure over time but
reconcile the precisely constructed new
roof elements with the unevenness of
the Victorian brickwork.”
He added: “Welsh Slate provided
technical advice throughout the design
phase through telephone consultation
and product literature.
The slates could be used in a consistent
tile size with even colour and their
fixings hidden by the overlapping of
each tile. We were also able to resolve
design problems using the integrated
and unobtrusive service penetrations,
which are pleasing architecturally and
from a conservation perspective, by
avoiding the need for a proprietary vent
pipe protruding above the pitch of the
roof.”
Tina Attley of Attleys Roofing said: “The
Welsh Slate has provided the aesthetics
required by the client and the architect
and at the same time has kept it in
keeping with the area. Everyone is really
pleased with the roof.”

industrial placement.
After applying to
Whitemountain I
secured the role of
Placement Quantity Surveyor. After completing
my course I was offered a permanent job and I am
currently working at London Luton Airport.
Sydney Montgomery
Laboratory Supervisor
I studied a GNVQ in Construction & Built
Environment. This covered a broad range of
subjects within the Construction Industry and I
developed a particular interest in Environmental
Science and Materials. I saw the position
advertised and was pleased to be offered the
job. There is an on-going learning process. The
company supported me through a Diploma in
Asphalt Technology. This was a 3 year course
through Derby University and involved a mixture
of distance learning, tutorials, coursework and
exams. This is an essential qualification for my
future development.
Key responsibilities:
I maintain a high level frequency of testing to
ensure our aggregates produced in Temple /
Ballystockart Quarries are of the good consistent
quality for the manufacture of bituminous
materials and concrete. My lab samples and tests
bituminous materials produced from Temple /
Blackmountain Asphalt Plants.
I oversee the CE marking of aggregates and
bituminous materials. This involves continued
surveillance checks from SGS. I complete tests
and procedures in accordance with the relevant
British Standards and Sector scheme 14 /
16 requirements to maintain our CE Marking
status for production and sale of aggregates
for bituminous material and concrete and also
production and laying of bituminous materials.
We are a UKAS accredited lab and go through a
yearly assessment to maintain our accreditation
for a variety of different testing procedures in
relation to bituminous and aggregate testing and
overall Lab quality management system. This
ensures Lab management system and testing
procedures continue to be completed to the high
levels set in accordance with UKAS standards.
At Whitemountain I have found the skills that I have
learnt through University have been developed further
in a practical manner. My construction technology and
commercial knowledge has greatly developed within
my time at Whitemountain.
The need for positive communication and team
working skills has been highlighted during my role.
I personally feel that securing this opportunity has
given me a rounded foundation and stepping stone to
work in many demanding professional roles within the
construction industry.
Brian Moohan
Surfacing Manager
From early on I have
been involved in the
Construction Industry,
starting part-time work
at a small concrete
batching company whilst
completing my studies at
school. This work led me
on to working on building
sites and I realised that
I wanted to work within
the Construction Industry. I then studied for a B.Sc.
Degree in Construction Engineering and Management.
This degree has opened up a lot of different avenues
within the Construction Industry and shortly after
completion I started with Whitemountain. In my
current role as Surfacing Manager I am responsible
for surfacing within the private contractors sector
throughout the greater Belfast Area.
I can be involved in a wide range of surfacing sites
with varying levels of Civils works taking place.
Every day is different and there will always be new
challenges, meaning I am continuously learning
and get a great sense of achievement when I can
overcome problems efficiently. Overseeing a job
from the start and seeing it through to completion is
especially rewarding.
