New student, I want to welcome you to Finland. Are
you ready? I hope so, because your adventures in Turku
(or Salo) are about to begin!
I was once an international student too. Some people
say that time as an international student is the best in
your life. I had my internship period in Jönköping, Sweden, for three months in the spring of 2012. I moved to
a strange country all alone without my family. Finland is
quite similar to Sweden, but still there were many new
things to learn for me. Like how to get change in a food
store.
The best thing in Finland is definitely our clean nature.
If you have a chance, go to the woods and take a deep
breath. But don’t be scared – we don’t have polar bears,
though someone might have said so!
In Sweden, I lived in a shared apartment for the first
time in my life. Everything went more than fine and I got
lifelong friends & loads of good memories. As I was an
intern, I did not have any tutors there for me - but you
guys - you will have tutors and in this issue we will tell
you a little bit of them!
I hope this magazine helps you to orientate to your
time in Finland. Take your chance. Make your dreams
come true. Be crazy! Enjoy. Have fun! Not even studying
should be too serious.
In Sweden, I realized that Finns and Swedes have one
important thing that unites us. Cinnamon rolls. We just
looove them. At the end of this magazine, you can find
my recipe for this Scandinavian pastry. Maybe you start
your journey to a Finnish lifestyle with them!

How to order a student card?

In short, Student Union TUO is the
student’s home at TUAS, the one
organization that takes care of your
interests as a student. TUO has over
4700 members altogether. And we
welcome you to join the ranks!
Smooth and happy studying for
everyone in TUAS!
One of TUO’s main objectives is to participate in
developing TUAS in a way that benefits students
and gives them better circumstances for studying. If you encounter some problems during your
studies, whether it’s with teachers, other students or something else, you can always contact
TUO (even if you’re not a member). By becoming
a member of TUO, you are also entitled to the
official student card!
Why should I get a student card?
The student card is your means to prove that
you’re a student in Finland, in all situations necessary. With the card you can get discounts and
benefits for example from traveling by train (4555% discount) and long-distance buses (50% discount). Also several museums, theaters, movies,
stores and restaurants give student discounts.

Frank.fi is a national student benefit site, which
offers discounts to students. You also order your
student card from Frank. The discounts can be
accessed through online verification or by showing one’s student card at a store. You can get the
student card either with a payment feature or
without it.
Step 1.
Order your card with the Student Card Order form
online (you can find it at http://frank.fi
AND www.opiskelijakunta.net/en)
You will need the following:
- A clear photo of your face in electronic format
- A payment instrument to pay for the order (You
can pay for the card order using any Finnish bank
or Visa-/ Mastercard)
- A Finnish personal identity code (only if you
want to order the card with the payment feature)
Step 2.
If you have ordered a card with the payment feature, you will get it via post put you have to come
and get the semester sticker to your card from
TUO’s office (otherwise the card is not valid). If
you ordered the card without the payment feature, you will get e-mail when you can come to
pick the card up from TUO’s office.
Step 3.
By logging into http://frank.fi –site you can
benefit from the online student discounts.

Turku is definitely one of the most
student- friendly cities in the whole
Finland. Turku isn’t a metropolis
with millions of inhabitants, but it
is – no doubt – a big city in a compact
package. One could describe Turku as
a modern car – you can make it like
you want, with dozens of possibilities
around you.
Don’t think this article as ”must follow” rules,
take it more like a guide to your hometown to be.
The places mentioned are my ultimate favorites
and that’s why I want to share them with you.
Sharing is caring. This will help you to customize
Turku to become your own city. There are plenty
of places which I couldn’t fit into the text, but
hopefully you will find your own favorites.
Turku – The wonderland of
restaurants
There are more restaurants in the city than one
could imagine, and you will most likely find the
one suiting you. New restaurants open all the
time, but the best ones stay longer and have
their place in the everyday life of citizens. Blanko
and Tintå are located right next to the riverside
neighboring one another. Concepts are totally different, but the rallying point is the amazing food
both are offering – what else one can ask for?
Blanko is more versatile since it is serving from
lunch to à la carte dishes and it even is a popular party place on weekends. The most popular

brunch is served on Sundays at Blanko. One of
the best pizzas in the city and large-scale wine
assortment are the strengths of Tintå.
One of the newest in town is di Trevi. Di Trevi
has on their list everything from tapas dishes to
steaks. The restaurant is also perfect for a group
of friends looking for a place to relax and just chat
for the night. Tårget opened its doors in March
and is an Italian style restaurant. They serve a
wine tasting menu at a wine bar. Perfect for wine
lovers to combine small portions of food with
wine that endorse the taste.
If you end up studying at Lemminkäisenkatu
-campus or ICT-campus, you have to try out Kultainen Hirvi restaurant. The restaurant has been
serving students since the beginning of times.
Pizzas or the crispy chicken fingers are the savior
when the night has continued long in the morning. You’ll even get a pint of beer cheaper with the
official student card.
Turku – Place to be for coffee lovers
If you’re a coffee addict like me, read this thoroughly and learn the places by heart. While
studying at TUAS you’ll end up making projects
of different kinds. The coffee houses of Turku are
perfect for project work. One of the most popular
coffee places is Cafe Art. Changing art exhibitions
is one thing, but Cafe Art has also their own coffee roaster where they roast house’s own mixes
of perfect coffee.
Latte Cafe is small in size but big in service. Baristas of this coffee house make every coffee with
care and love and they don’t spare on service
either. Before finding this amazing coffee house,
I had been walking past it millions and millions
of times, but I did not dare to step inside until a
friend of mine recommended it to me. That’s why
I’m recommending stepping inside Latte now to
you.
For all the French people or the people who love
France, there’s a coffee house called Cafe Voltaire
in town. Voltaire is owned by Jean-Pierre Frigo,
journalist with French origin, who knows the
secrets of France and has brought them to Turku.
I ended up at Voltaire after my exchange semester in France. The warmth and authenticity of the
coffee place made me a regular customer. You
can enjoy all kinds of French delicacies with your
coffee, and you can also buy French food to take
home. Monsieur Frigo will give you wine recommendations for the food you have bought from
Cafe Voltaire. A perfect place when you suffer
from home sickness or travel fever.
Turku – Places to spend time at the
later hours
In Turku, there are a handful of places where you
can enjoy your night with friends without even
considering the clubs. B4R (Bar four) is like your
own living room for many townsmen or –women.
I have found myself there many times having
intensive talks with people or dancing at the spot
which don’t even fulfill the criteria of a dance
floor. The staff can create amazing drinks after a
customer has only given a few hints of what they
like.
Student Village hides inside a real legend. Three
Beers pub has got its part of fame and glory
among the students of Turku. It is worth trying even though you wouldn’t live in Student
Village. Board Games and a broad beer assortment makes sure you’ll enjoy your time there.
Another student friendly pub is located right next
to University of Turku Campus. Proffan Kellari
has student- friendly prices and the location also
serves students well.
Turku – for more active people
If you’re more an active student and don’t enjoy
that much of good dinners and drinks, there’s
also something for you. At Kiipeilypalatsi (inside
wall climbing hall) one can try his/hers climbing
skills. Kiipeilypalatsi offers challenges to beginners as well as to a more experienced climber. If
you stay in Turku at summer time, I recommend
trying Flowpark. It is an outside park which has
different kinds of climbing trails. Do you have a
daredevil inside you? That you can test while sliding between two trees hanging on just a wire and
a harness.
Hohtogolf West Coast offers minigolf at its best.
15 different courses with special effects will
definitely make you laugh and few of them even
make you scared. At Kiitorata bowling center you
can spend an evening with your friends. Both
Hohtogolf West Coast and Kiitorata give you a
change to check who the boss of your student
group is. A little hint about Kiitorata: Place is
small, so you should book beforehand.
Turku – a vibrant summer city
In the summer time, there are loads to experience in Turku. One can have a picnic in one of the
many parks, or just enjoy the sun at the riverside.
River boats open around the first of May and
they offer you relief when the weather is warm.
All these are part of the summer traditions of
the people in Turku. It seems in the summer that
Turku is not even the same city that you got used
to during the winter. Summer is most definitely
the best time to experience Turku, although winter isn’t a bad option either.

One of TUAS’ campuses operates in Salo, a cozy town with 55 000
inhabitants. It takes 30 minutes by train from Turku to Salo. These are the
places in Salo, that you just can’t miss!

Ask any Salo citizen – The Other Cookie is the
finest coffee house in town. Coffee is excellent,
of course – but just wait for their pies and cakes!
Everything they serve is a piece of art with many
cute details. Take your time when you visit, it
takes a while to get these works of art on a plate.
Veturitalli (art museum)

If you like art museums, visit Veturitalli! Their
changing exhibitions are very popular and of
high quality. The Veturitalli art museum is right in
the middle of centre. You can also have a cup of
coffee there after seeing the exhibition. And their
little souvenir shop always has something nice to
offer.
Market place

The market place alias “Tori” is Salo’s warm heart.
It is open around the year on every Tuesday,
Thursday and Saturday 7am-14pm. At summer

time (2 May – 31 August)the market place is
open every day 7am-15pm (except on Sundays).
Don’t miss the famous fall fair (syysmarkkinat) at
25.-29. September 2014! Everyone at Salo will
attend this event! I really mean everyone!
Sports at Salo

At sports hall Salohalli you can experience Finnish
Championship sports in basketball and volleyball.
The basketball team Salon Vilpas and the women’s volleyball team LP Viesti have lots of fans
around here. If you want to play sports yourself,
it is also possible here. The sports hall, the Sport
Park, the swimming hall, the gym etc. are full of
opportunities.
Bar & Café Volum

Want to have a cup of coffee or a beer at a casual
pub? Volum is probably the nicest pub in Salo. At
Volum, you can often enjoy live music, mostly rap
& Finnish reggae. By the way – Salo inhabitants
go out mostly at Saturdays.
ESN-IAC is a volunteer based student organization, which organizes free time
activities and trips for exchange students and other internationally minded
students. We want to make sure that the exchange students enjoy their time in
Turku and have the best possible Erasmus experience.

Erasmus Student Network is one of the largest
student organizations in Europe. Currently there
are 16 sections in Finland. In Turku, we have three
sections. ESN-IAC is one of them and the two
others are ESN Uni Turku and ESN Åbo Akademi.
We cooperate with these two sections and arrange together events and trips which require
more resources, for example Social Erasmusprojects or trips abroad. All of us also cooperate
with The Monkey night club. ESN is maybe known
best for its awesome parties, but mainly we arrange non-alcoholic events and projects.
HAM
During the past academic year, we have organized
various events and trips. One of our best known
events is Hang Around Monday (HAM), which is
arranged every other Monday with a changing
theme. The most popular HAM themes have been
Valentine’s Day speed friending and International
food evenings. Other events we have organized
during the past year have been e.g. ice hole
swimming, bowling, mini golfing and megazone.
Trips
We have made unforgettable trips to the surrounding areas of Turku. Every fall we take the
exchange students to Ruissalo for a refreshing
autumn stroll and after that they have a possibility
to go swimming in the sea and have a sauna. Another unforgettable trip is the Survival Weekend in
the Kurjenrahka national park. The students have
to survive in the nature for the whole weekend
and build up team spirit.
In March 2014, we made the annual trip to Lapland for one week. The bus journey from Turku to
Lapland lasts 14 hours (plus the stops) but it was
all worth it! The activities in Lapland consisted of
skiing, snowboarding, cross country skiing, snow
shoeing, husky safari and snow mobile driving.
In the evening, we enjoyed sauna, played games
and had theme parties. The trip is one of the highlights of the year.
We happily invite every student to join our great
IAC group as an active. Hope to see you in our
events!

Studying at TUAS can sometimes be very hard and demanding. Sometimes
you need to relax and forget your studies for a moment. Student parties
are one way to have fun with your friends and forget all your study worries
for a night. The Student Union TUO and the student associations organize
events almost every week during the semester.

Who is organizing?
Alongside taking care of students’ interests, the
Student Union of the Turku University of Applied
Sciences – TUO some big events during school
year. Also other student associations at TUAS
organize parties and other activities for students
to have unforgettable free-time. Keep your eyes
open on campuses so that you don’t miss the
best parties of the year!
Who can party?
YOU! And your friends. And your friend’s friends.
And everybody else. It does not matter which

party or who is organizing it, just join in and have
a blast!
When & Where?
The most common days of the week for student
parties are Wednesday and Thursday nights; then
you can spot students with their overalls wandering around the city to the bars. The most common
places where parties are organized are Night Club
Marilyn and Vegas Night Club. These clubs are the
oldest bars in Turku and they have been organizing student parties over 20 years. In these two
bars you can always find other students. There
are also many other bars that organize student
parties, like Börs Night Club and The Monkey.
The student parties are not just partying all night
long. Sometimes they start with an organized
city orienteering. In city orienteering you collect a
team of about four students in advance and sign
up for orienteering. With the team you go around
Turku city and do fun tasks in the check points
and get scores depending how well you succeed
in the tasks. The winner of the orienteering is announced usually at the after party.
There are also academic table parties called sits,
where three course dinner is served with drinks.
In these sits parties drinking songs are sung,
and the party is not considered to have been a
success, if you have been able to eat your main
course warm. There are many rules at the sits,
and they may sound weird and hard to understand at first, but the toast masters and your
table party will help the first timers to know what
you should do and when to do it.
Welcome party
Welcome party is one of the biggest parties
every semester. The student unions of all the four
universities in Turku work together to organize
this party for all the new international students
in Turku, international tutors from all universities
as well as other international and internationally
minded people. Spot this party to make new
friends!
Countryside bus tour (Landerundi)
This Countryside bus tour takes the students to
the Turku countryside. They visit small pubs and
experience the countryside atmosphere by dressing up according to the “countryside” theme. The
buses go to about three pubs and in the end each
bus comes back to Turku to bring the students to
the big after party to continue to have a good time
together.
Freshmen party (Keltanokkabileet)
Every September TUO organizes a party for the
freshmen. This party gathers over 1,200 new students to the same field where they are officially
accepted members of our university of applied
sciences and the student union. They have to
swear an oath before heading to the Turku city
orienteering. This costume party is open for older
students as well, but they will have their own
party known as Rednose party (Punanenäbileet)
while the freshmen circle around the city.
The student event of the year is 1st
of May (Vappu)!
Before 1st of May, there are many events to prepare the students for the actual day. On the last
day of April all the TUAS students get together at
Sepänkatu campus’ yard to celebrate spring and
summer that is about to begin! All the students
put their overalls on and party outside almost all
night. On 1st of May everybody goes for a picnic
to the parks in Turku city.
P.S. Even though most of these parties take place
in bars, you don’t have to drink, if you don’t feel
like it. You can have fun and get to know new
people also without drinking.

For every educational field, there is an active student association at Turku
University of Applied Sciences. Student associations organize a lot of
different events and take care of the current issues in their education in
collaboration with the student union TUO.

ELBA
Elba is the student association for the students
of bio, food and laboratory technology, chemical
engineering and materials science. Elba is looks
after its members’ best interests by voicing the
engineering students’ point of view. Some of the
student parties organized fully or partly by Elba
include Biopoly, Lemppari United, Silliä ja Kuravettä, Biosfääri and bingo evenings near Easter
and Christmas. Elba also runs ELBAShop which
focuses on selling laboratory supplies and second
hand textbooks.

ESN-IAC
ESN-IAC (Erasmus Student Network-International
Action Club) is a volunteer student organization
which consists of a board and actives. We organize parties and nonalcoholic activities for exchange students. Some of our most well-known
events are Hang Around Monday (HAM) and
a camping trip Survival weekend. Our office is
located in Lemminkäisenkatu 30, classroom B107.

MoMe
MoMe is a journalism students’ own association.
We are located at Lemminkäisenkatu campus.
MoMe is a quite young association; nevertheless
we are very active when it comes to policy-making or arranging a good party for everyone to have
a good time!

TOM
TOM is the association for students of Design in
Turku. Our main goal is to watch over the rights of
design students in TUAS. We organize differents
kinds of events from small scale social gatherings to field trips and big parties. Our main events
of the year consists of an excursions to design
fairs - like Habitare in Helsinki and the Furniture
and Light fair in Stockholm – and of student parties – like Epic Mustache Party. You can find us on
Sepänkatu campus, our office is at the C2 stairway. Just follow the mustaches!

SUUKKO
The main goal of SUUKKO (Dental Hygienist
students of TUAS) is to arrange events in cooperation with other student associations and to
improve the social cohesion among its members.
You can easily recognize a member of SUUKKO
from the street scene; we are the users of the
fresh-colored turquoise overalls. SUUKKO takes
action on Ruiskatu campus.

TOY
Taideakatemian Opiskelijayhdistys TOY is Turku
Arts Academy’s own student organization. Our
office is located on Linnankatu campus where
we organize different art filled events. Our most
important events include The Night of the Arts
Academy, which is an open door event held every
autumn. Other important student parties are
Überfest and Kasarirock. TOY also publishes the
Arts Academy’s own student magazine KAAOS.

SYKLI
Sykli is the student association for the Degree
Programmes of Sustainable Development and
Fisheries and Environment. You can visit our office at Sepänkatu campus if you crave for coffee
or just want to connect with nice people who are
interested in environmental issues. A majority of
the branch consists of female students and Sykli
takes part in organizing Girl Power -parties every
autumn.

TIO is an organization meant exclusively for
engineering students and it’s the largest student
association of TUAS. Our offices are located in
the ICT-building and on Sepänkatu campus. TIO
organizes many student parties during the year

TRADE
TRADE
Trade is the student association for BBA students. We take care of your benefits locally in
Turku and also arrange various kinds of events
and parties. Our main events are ALV (a business
themed party), Pikkarit (pre-Christmas party),
Pulkkis (a winter themed outdoor happening)
and the combined competition/party unofficial
bowling championships and Ei Teemaa (costume
party with no theme). Our smaller events include
for example music quizzes, a table ice hockey
tournament etc. You can also order your yellow
BBA students overalls from us. Our offices are
on Lemminkäisenkatu and Sepänkatu campuses.
At offices, you can buy tickets to events, come
to a cup of coffee and hang around at our super
comfy sofas! Our monthly bulletin for members is
published also in English!

TSTS
TSTS is a students association for the social- and
healthcare students in Turku and Salo. We organize different events and parties for our students,
some of them every year, for example Bongaa
tonttu, Ystävät yhdessä and Tursajaiset. We also
try to make things better in our field and make
studying in our university more comfortable. Our
office is located on Ruiskatu campus, room 144.

TROK
TROK is a guild for the students of civil engineering and leadership in construction. TROK hosts
a number of events for its members, including
visits to construction sites and other interesting
locations, expert lectures, provides information
regarding internships and other job opportunities
and maintains the flow of information between
companies and students, in the shape of a CVbank, for example. TROK’s duties also include
the maintenance of on-going communication and
exchange of ideas between companies, students
and TUAS.

wear? There is one simple solution to that problem: OVERALLS!
Every Wednesday and Thursday night you can see
students walking around the city with strange
baggy outfits that are full of badges and other
junk hanging from them. What are these outfits?
They are every student’s uniform: overalls! Every
student’s overalls are unique; there is no identical
pair of overalls even though colors might be the
same.
Where can you get those badges?
Almost everywhere! At every student party,
you’ll get a badge when you pay in for the party.
You can get them from other events too. Some
people also sell unique badges for a few Euros.
You can also trade them with other students if
you have many of the same kind.
So there are many ways to get badges, but how
do you attach them to your overalls? There are
many ways to do that. Some students glue them,
some sew them and some do both. Anyway you
do it, I can guarantee that you have to do it again
because the badges will fall regardless how well
you attach them.
Often there is also other junk hanging from the
overalls, usually souvenirs from different events.
There are no limits to what you can hang to your
overalls (although it might make it difficult to walk
in them) but almost everything that people have
hung to them has some cool memories to remember. There can be also some helpful objects
hanging in overalls for example reflectors and
bottle openers.
Where to get my own overalls?
Student associations order overalls mainly in the
autumn when the new students begin their studies. You can go to your own student association’s
office and ask if they have some overalls left over,
which you can buy and get right away. When you
get the overalls you have the perfect student
party uniform and you will never again have to
wonder what to wear on a Thursday night!

TUAS has hundreds of international degree students from all over the world
doing cool stuff in and outside of the university campus. Every year the
new freshmen arrive and bring their individual flavor into this spicy mix.
Intercultural Movie Club (IMC) is a student based action group promoting
cultural understanding through movies.

Hi! Tell the readers of Tuokio Xtra something
about yourself and why have you decided to
study abroad? And how do you feel about the
Finnish climate?
Hi! My name is Sulochana Kc, I am from Nepal
and study international business at TUAS. I decided to study abroad so that after having studied
in a truly multicultural environment I could tackle
challenges of the corporate world better. Before
coming to Finland, for example the Finnish winter
made me excited and nervous at the same time.
To be honest, I was a bit fearful, but to my surprise I really enjoy the snow. At first, when I came
here in September, I used to feel cold, but now I
have adapted to it.
What kind of movies have you watched so far?
We have watched movies from different genres,
ranging from documentaries to horror and comedy. So far the movies have been made in Finland,
Vietnam, China and Russia. We are flexible and
decide together what we watch each time. Everybody is welcome to express their opinion.
If somebody wants to join, how can they find
the IMC?
We have a group in Facebook named “Intercultural Movie Club!”, so the best alternative is to join
us there. We normally watch a movie every Friday
from 6pm to 8pm.
That is great to hear. So, tell us what the IMC
is about?
Do you have something else to say to the
readers of Tuokio? The floor is yours!
The Intercultural Movie Club consists of a group
of people interested in learning about cultural
differences, such as beliefs and values, from each
other through movies. Some people have said
that you do not need a club for watching movies.
But it is not just about watching films: we have
developed a real sense of team spirit by doing
this together!
Well, I would like to say, that having grown up in
a completely different culture, everything here
amazes me -for example the lifestyle in general.
However, I have made new friends and learned
that even though we are all different, we are in
the same boat together. We learn from each other
constantly, and that makes studying so much
more interesting!

INTERNATIONAL TUTORING
AT TUAS

Every exchange student coming
to TUAS gets an international
student tutor. These tutors help the
students for example with issues
related to arrival, accommodation
and daily student life in Turku. We
interviewed one of our tutors, Jon
Nesten, International Business
student.
Hello Jon! Could you tell something about
yourself?
I am a 22-year-old student at TUAS. I moved to
Turku about 1.5 years ago, cause I really like
Turku! I started my studies in fall 2013, and after
that I have been hanging out with exchange students. In January 2014 I signed to be an international tutor.
Why did you want to become an international
tutor?
I met some exchange students when I began
studying, I started hanging out with them and
realized how friendly and social everybody is.
When the International Office was looking for
new international tutors I thought it would be cool
to help the new exchange students when they
come to Finland. In addition, I study in English
and speaking English all the time is the best way
to learn it!
You have been tutoring for one semester now,
could you tell something about your experiences?
My experiences are only positive! I am tutoring with two of my friends from TUAS, and our
exchange students were from Russia. They have
been really awesome, and I have got 3 really good
friends that I will miss when they leave! We have
spent time partying, visiting the city; sightseeing
and once we had a poker night at our place. I will
definitely continue tutoring as long as I study at
TUAS.
Do you see international tutoring as a good
service for the exchange students?
Yes, I think it is really helpful and good! And I
have heard only positive feedback about it from
the exchange students. When you come to a
new country for a first time, and you are alone in
a place which has totally different laws and rules
than what you are used to, it is really helpful to
have someone who is genuinely interested about
how you are doing and helps you with accommodation and other important stuff. I hope that
wherever I go on exchange they have something
like this!
What would you tell to the new exchange
students about international tutoring?
First of all, I would say that it is important to have
a positive attitude and not to stress too much
about the exchange period. It is also important
that you guys coming to TUAS as exchange students would answer our emails on time and send
your questions to us right away. Let us also know
where you are going to live here in Turku and the
time and place of your arrival, so that we will be
able to pick you up and get you settled in.
Remember that we are also students who are
studying at the same time and tutoring is voluntary work for us.

COLD WINTER AND
LOTS OF MOOSE

There are over 350 international
degree students in Turku University
of Applied Sciences. One of them
is British Gareth Stowers who is
studying nursing in Salo.
Gareth didn’t have any expectations of Finland before he came here aside from expecting a cold winter
and lots of moose. “You don’t really hear a lot about
Finland in the UK”, he says. “I was lucky this winter
was not so cold and sadly I didn’t see any moose, but
-15°C was much colder weather than I have experienced before. I felt like a spaceman with all the clothing I needed to wear to go out.”
Most of the Finnish people he has met have been absolutely lovely and the international group where he
studies is brilliant, warm and full of friendly people.
His Finnish classmates have tried their best to help
him settle in Finland and so far he has really enjoyed
his time in here . “I feel blessed to have met them all”,
he says.
“Finland is a safe,
friendly country
and a great place
to study”
When asked what surprised him about Finland he
tells that he is often surprised by the sheer beauty of
the Finnish countryside. “I can see why so many Finns
love it so much.”
Gareth was also surprised at the impact of the long
nights of winter had on him psychologically. “Next
year I think I’ll get one of those SAD lamps and see if
that helps.”
The best tip he would give to an international student who is coming to Finland would be: “Enjoy
yourself. Finland is a safe, friendly country and a
great place to study - just don’t expect to see many
moose!”

Finnish cinnamon rolls
(korvapuustit)
Ingredients
25 g yeast (hiiva)
75 g butter (voi)
300 ml milk (maito)
1/2 teaspoon salt (suola)
50 ml sugar (sokeri)
3/4 teaspoon ground cardamom (kardemumma)
750 ml wheat flour (vehnäjauhot)
Filling
100 g butter, room temperature (voi)
100 ml sugar (sokeri)
2 teaspoons cinnamon (kaneli)
For Brushing
1 egg, beaten for brushing (kananmuna)
Sprinkle some flour on top and cover bowl with a
cloth: let the dough rise for 30 minutes. Tip: Drain
hot water in the sink and place the bowl into the
water. The dough rises better in warm.
Mix the filling ingredients together.
Directions
Heat the oven to 225°C.
Crumble yeast into a bowl. Melt butter in another
bowl, add milk and gently heat the mixture to
37°C in the microwave. (If you use dry yeast, heat
mixture to 42°C).
Pour the mixture over yeast and mix until yeast
has dissolved. Add salt, sugar, cardamom and stir;
add about 200 ml of the flour and stir. Hand is a
good tool.
Add the rest of the flour and knead dough by
hand until it’s smooth and elastic and it no longer
sticks to the bowl (this shouldn’t take long) nor to
your hand (which takes a bit longer).
Lightly flour the baking board and turn the dough
on it. Roll the dough out to a 40 x 60 cm square.
Spread the filling on the dough and roll it up tightly, starting from the longer side of the square.
Cut the roll in 3-4 cm pieces.
”Open” the pieces by pressing the center of each
piece with a handle of a knife so that the centre is
pressed down and the sides spread.
Place rolls on a baking sheet parchment, cover
with a cloth and let rise for 30 minutes.
Brush the rolls with a beaten egg. Bake at 225°C
for about 10 minutes. Cover the rolls while cooling.
