Turku is Finland’s oldest city (784 years) and previous capital, also European Capital of
Culture in 2011. It is located on the south-western coast of Finland, where the sea meets
the river Aura.
Turku is compact in size making it easy for visitors to reach many interesting sights by
foot – Turku cathedral, Turku castle, Forum Marinum maritime centre and the riverbanks
with many museums and restaurants to name a few.
It is also a vibrant and modern city with many happenings all year round. Turku is surrounded by beautiful nature and places, such as Naantali, an idyllic and popular seaside
town, where the summer residence of the Finnish President is located.
An extra touch
to the cruise feeling
is given by the unique
archipelago, also said to
be the most beautiful in
the world. There are over
20,000 islands in the Turku
Archipelago. It shows its best
sides to cruise passengers
when seen from the deck
of a vessel arriving in
the port.
“
After our visit in Turku we have many good
things to say about the city to shipping companies and to other interest groups. Co-operation
between the Port and the City is flawless, and
the expertise of the tourist office contributes to
the wellfunctioning system.”
Bo Larsen
Director of Cruise Baltic
1.Turku Cathedral
The medieval cathedral is Finland’s national
shrine, towering over the river Aura and the
city.
2. Aboa vetus & Ars Nova
The museum is actually two museums: Aboa
Vetus reveals the world of medieval Turku with
an authentic piece of old Turku. Ars Nova is a
museum of modern art comprising works from
top Finnish and international artists.
3. Turku Castle
A medieval castle that has stood guard over
the river Aura estuary since the 1280’s. It has
been carefully renovated, and is now an exciting place offering something to see and to do
for all ages.
4. Forum Marinum maritime centre
Highlights of the Finnish shipping and naval
history can be found at Forum Marinum. The
full-rigger Suomen Joutsen, barque Sigyn,
minelayer Keihässalmi and corvette Karjala are
berthed just outside and open for visitors in
the summertime.
5. Turku Art Museum
The museum’s fabulous art nouveau building
was opened in 1904. Since its opening the
museum has played a central part in the
Finnish art life presenting important works by
Finnish and international artists.
