From the Pastor’s Desk…
Today we celebrate The Feast of the Holy Trinity. “The
Catechism of the Catholic Church says, “The mystery of the Most
Holy Trinity is the central mystery of Christian faith and life. It is
the mystery of God in Himself. It is therefore the source of all the
other mysteries of faith” One God in three persons: Father, Son and
the Holy Spirit. They are equally wise, equally powerful and equally
good and yet not distinct from each other.
The word Trinity was coined by Tertullian in the second
Century. The Council of Nicaea (325 A.D.) gave us a Creed which
we recite every Sunday. The creed states:
I believe in one God the ……..I believe in Jesus Christ his only
Son……..I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord the giver of Life……
The Creed throws light on the specific roles of the each person of
the Trinity. Father: the Creator, Son: the Redeemer and the Holy
Spirit: the Sanctifier.
In the Church’s history, St. Augustine used the fact of our
intellect to explain this mystery, He says, our “Intellect” has three
faculties (Understanding, Memory and Will) yet it is one Intellect.
St. Patrick used the image of “Shamrock” to explain about the Trinity. Karl Barth a protestant theologian sees the mystery in these
words: God has spoken to us. According to this explanation God is
the Speaker, Jesus is the Word (Eternal Word) and the Holy Spirit is
an Interpreter.
For me this strongest connection between the three persons
of the Holy Trinity is seen in these verses:
Jesus said, “No one can come to the Father except through me
(Jesus)” (Jn 14:6).
No one can say, “Jesus is Lord” except by the Holy Spirit. (1Cor
12:3).
Jesus says, the Father and I are one (Jn 10:30).
Go therefore and baptize them in the name of the Father and of the
Son and of the Holy Spirit…….. (Mt. 28:19).
Walking with the Lord (Corpus Christi Procession)
Next Sunday, May 29th, we celebrate the Feast of the Corpus
Christi. We will honor the Body of Christ as we process outdoors
with the Blessed Sacrament. When we carry the Eucharist into our
neighborhood we are professing our faith outside the doors of our
Church. We are also acknowledging our call to bring Christ to our
neighbors and to all the world. This Procession will be at the conclusion of the 12:15 PM Mass. We encourage all to participate in
the Corpus Christi Procession.
God bless you,
Fr. John Francis
