Party Time in Switzerland
Editorial
Dear Readers,
In the title story of this issue, we are out on the road for once at
night and are mixing with the night crowd. Which clubs, discos,
cultural venues and bars are the "in" places? We asked youth
hostel staff about the best venues in the cities of Fribourg,
Solothurn, Lausanne, Basel and Zurich. We found out that the
Swiss party scene is alive and kicking, and – by the way – youth
hostel staff are certainly no stay-at-homes: they definitely
know how to party! So, if you fancy a night out, turn to Pages
four and five for tips from the insiders.
On the practical side, night owls will find that the youth hostels at Basel and Solothurn have plenty to offer. In Basel
revellers can even enjoy an early breakfast after a night out.
So there's every reason for guests to paint the town red!
The Scuol Youth Hostel won no less than three prizes in the
second "Award for Marketing + Architecture" competition, including the top prize worth CHF 10,000. Through this competition, Swiss Youth Hostels support projects undertaken by "Les
Collégiens Akadiens et leurs Amis Africains CAAA" in Zanzibar.

Party… Party…
Why travel long distances when so much is happening in
Switzerland? The "party miles" in our cities offer everything to
set the pulses of nocturnal revellers racing. Youth hostel
staff know all about the party scene too, and they have shared
their hottest tips with MyHostelNews.
Fribourg
Fribourg – the name conjures up images of a peaceful and
somewhat sleepy little town. A cathedral, medieval buildings in
the old town, bridges, cobblestone pavements, artworks both
old and contemporary, and historic organs. All good reasons for
a visit to the "City of Bridges – City of Culture". But what is there
to do after a day packed with cultural attractions?
Well, for instance, the "Fri-son" is one option. From unknown musicians and the latest stars in the music industry
through to lively parties, the "Fri-son" offers everything for a
memorable night out. Its stated aim is to stage artistic events,
focusing on contemporary music, and to make them accessible
to a wide audience.
Another tip: the "Irish Pub". Fans of international football
should be sure to drop in at the "Irish" and enjoy a Champions
League match while nursing a cool Guinness. "Café XXème" is a
venue where artistes (some of them as yet unknown) can perform. It's definitely worth taking a look to see what's happening
here.
Solothurn
Staff at Solothurn Youth Hostel recommend the "Kulturfabrik
Kofmehl" in their city. Launched back in 1992 with a performance of a play in an empty factory hall, this venue is now a
firmly established institution. Nowadays, in fact, it would be
impossible to imagine the Swiss music scene without the "Kulturfabrik Kofmehl". The driving forces behind the "Köfu" (as
the Solothurn people call it) lay on some amazing events that

embrace every musical style, including some big names from
time to time. It's also worth taking a look at the programme.
Solothurn's night owls are also to be found until the small hours
at the "Club Deep Underground" in the Culture Garage. This is a
regular venue for partygoers from the entire region, with scintillating musical offerings ranging from cool R’n’B rhythms, funk,
and soul through to old-school hip hop. Electronic funk parties
are staged once a month.
Another tip: "The Eleven". This is a club for style-conscious
revellers. People meet up to chat at the bar, for an intimate conversation in one of the lounge areas or on the dance floor, where
the DJs make sure that every party goes with a swing.
Lausanne
Staff at Lausanne Youth Hostel love an evening out, and they
have a long list of tips for you. As a university city, Lausanne is
famed for its lively club scene. For example, house music sets
the tone at the "D! Club", a former cinema. This style of music
is the backdrop for parties at this venue, which hosts star performers as well as lesser-known artistes. The "Atelier Volant"
has three floors where guests can enjoy pop, funk, reggae,
R’n’B and Latino music: to each his (or her) own. Incidentally,
the second floor is set aside for over-25s; the tastes of these
slightly senior revellers are indulged with rock and pop from
the 80s. "Mad" is probably the city's most legendary venue: live
acts and DJs make sure that the beat goes on here until the
wee small hours. This autumn, Lausanne will also play host to
the "Metropop Festival" (11–13 November) and the "Luff", or
Lausanne Underground Film & Music Festival (20–24 October).
Both these renowned events are "musts" for every resident of
Lausanne.
Basel
Cozy pubs, wild parties and endless clubbing – that's what the
city of Basel promises on its homepage. A rather ambitious
claim, maybe? We were curious to find out, so we asked around.
The "Schiff" is a combined restaurant and club, a short distance outside Basel in the Rhine harbour – a three-deck venue
for gourmets, nocturnal revellers, creative spirits and musiclovers. Music is the name of the game on the lower deck. As
well as the exhibition room, the club and concert rooms serve
up musical "delicacies" of all sorts. "Kaserne Basel" is a venue
for the free theatre, dance and performance art scene, but it
also hosts concerts. The "Kuppel" is one of the city's most
versatile clubs. A temporary structure that has lasted over
15 years, this fashionable tent on the Birsig offers clubbing, concerts, cocktails and a warm ambience. Salsa, hip hop, reggae,
funk, disco, oldies, alternative rock, boardersounds and party-
beats – there's something for everyone aged 17 or over, including a special evening for party people aged over 25 every first
Friday of the month!
Zurich
Zurich is probably the Mecca of the Swiss party scene. A huge
range is on offer and it's hard to pick out the best cherries. However, the youth hostel staff enjoy a night out and they know all
the coolest spots in town, starting with the "Olé-Olé-Bar". This
is somewhat of an institution on the Zurich scene, with music
still pouring forth from the juke-box and an equally warm welcome for regulars, teenies and yuppies from the banking district. Reggae enthusiasts flock to "Stall 6", while the "Helsinki"
(a converted garage) hosts lively parties and concerts. "Zukunft"
is the 24/24 venue for electro fans, directly opposite the "Happy
Beck" which also serves its fresh filled rolls more or less round
the clock.
No doubt about it: Switzerland's nightlife and party scene have
something for everyone. And youth hostels are on hand in every major city to offer a comfortable bed to weary night-time
revellers. Text: Maya Höneisen

Refurb at St. Moritz
The Scuol Youth Hostel emerged victorious
from the second edition of the "Award for Marketing and Architecture". And please note: this
hostel won no less than three awards, including the top prize worth CHF 10,000. This prize
was awarded to "Les Collégiens Akadiens et
leurs Amis Africains" (CAAA). By providing experience, know-how, human resources and
financial support from Swiss Youth Hostels,
CAAA has already chalked up some major
achievements in Zanzibar. The projects listed
below were among those completed successfully thanks to the valuable contributions from
Swiss Youth Hostels and direct cooperation
with the Zanzibar Minister of Education:
– Groundwater supply for inhabitants of
Ndijani
– Construction of a primary and secondary
school
– Sanitary facilities
– Completion of the school canteen
CAAA is an association dedicated to education
and human development in Africa. Students,
teachers and previous graduates of AKAD College decided to set it up in 2006 with the primary aim of sponsoring and supporting educational projects in Africa by building schools
and apprentices' workshops. Swiss news

World". Our guests at the youth hostel should
also experience the exclusivity of this location, so this summer will see a refurbishment
of the youth hostel to adapt it to the latest
standards. The heating throughout the building is to be modernised and the facade will be
renovated. The existing first and second floors
will remain unchanged, but the third floor will
be modernised by installing individual baths. A
new fourth storey will add double and family
rooms with baths to the present offering.
This overall renovation and upgrade is in
keeping with Swiss Youth Hostels' sustainability goals. Refurbishment of the energy systems
will largely be in compliance with the requirements of the Minergie Standard. Renewable
energy sources (wood shavings) will be used
throughout for heating, and the construction
materials conform to the ECO Building Guidelines.
Despite the refurbishment and extension
work, the St. Moritz Youth Hostel will stay
open for guests throughout summer and autumn 2010.

International News
Two new hostels in Scotland
SYHA Hostelling Scotland recently welcomed
the new hostel Corrour Station House,
located in an iconic Highland station. SYHA
has also celebrated the reopening of
Lochranza Youth Hostel following a £0.5 million
refurbishment.
Situated on Rannoch Moor and forming part of
Corrour Estate, the iconic Corrour station provides a "gateway to the Highlands". Its remote
atmosphere is highlighted by a famous scene
in the film "Trainspotting".
SYHA Hostelling Scotland has taken on the
lease of the station house, which has benefited
from partial refurbishment and redecoration
to provide a bright, fresh and pleasant restaurant and rooms. Corrour Station House opens
up the Highlands to a wider market of walkers,
nature lovers and educational groups.
In particular, schools and youth and education groups can now be catered for at the location, which offers incredible wildlife watching,
walking, outdoor activities and an invaluable
field trip experience for both young and old.
Lochranza Youth Hostel is situated on the
Isle of Arran in southwest Scotland. Following the refurbishment, the 4-star hostel offers
high quality, flexible and affordable accom-
modation to individuals, families and groups,
making the popular Isle of Arran more accessible than ever as a fantastic Scottish holiday.
SYHA has invested in premium beds, en
suite private rooms and superior kitchen and
shower facilities in order to provide guests
with a quality experience, while retaining the
traditional charm of the building.
Guests can also be assured that ecologically sound measures have topped the list
wherever possible, with the installation of rain
water harvesting, heat pumps and energyefficient lighting, partly funded by Community
Energy Scotland and the Scottish Government
CARES scheme. The hostel is also the frst in
Scotland to achieve Fair Trade status, selling exclusively Fair Trade teas and coffees to
guests.

New HI-Whistler
has opened!
Almost everyone has heard of Whistler, Canada, especially now that it has the title of 2010
Winter Olympics Host Mountain Resort under
its belt. It's a popular spot to say the least, and
for good reason. Consistently ranked #1 in the
world, Whistler/Blackcomb ski resort has an
average annual snowfall of nine metres. In the
summer, mountain biking and hiking take over
– and that's just in the mountains.
HI-Canada-Pacific Mountain Region set
out years ago to establish a new hostel that
would meet the demands in Whistler. Following a partnership with local developers, a
new 180-bed hostel is scheduled to open this
summer.
The brand new building was part of the
Athletes' Village during the Winter Olympics,
housing athletes from around the world during the 16-day event. After a few tweaks, the
building was opened on 1 June as a hostel with
four-bed dorms and private rooms, large common areas and BBQ decks, state-of-the-art
ski and bike storage, free WiFi and an on-site
café.
