Dear Friends: As the chairman of Waveny Care Network’s Board of Directors, I would like to take this opportunity to extend my gratitude for your ongoing support. In a year once again marked by fundraising shortcomings for most non-profits across the nation, I am both proud and honored to report that Waveny Care Network not only persevered, but thrived in 2009. This year has been yet another testament to Waveny’s achievement and success, progress, vigor and potential. In December 2009, our Board of Directors proudly adopted a new “Mission, Vision and Values” statement to help chart Waveny’s course in the coming years. Governed by the tenets of quality, excellence, collaboration, staff, responsibility and community, we believe this statement to wholly reflect Waveny’s organizational outlook and the mission we seek to deliver upon. To better acquaint you with these values and the concepts we believe them to embody, you will find them throughout the pages of this year’s annual report. I believe they will resonate as strongly with you and your personal vision of our mission as they do with our Board, staff and volunteers. Also new for this year was the creation of an “Advisory Council” – a special consultative body comprised exclusively of former Waveny chairs. From this year forward, all past chairs will be named lifetime Advisory Council members. This new council reflects our belief in and respect for our predecessors’ experience, wisdom and leadership. Moreover, it represents due recognition that their distinct level of service has imbued each past chair with a unique and intimate knowledge of our organization and the greater New Canaan community. Committed to anticipating and addressing the eldercare needs of our community and preserving its generational blend, a major focus over the past year has been an ongoing discussion regarding the creation of a Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC). We are delighted that this subject has captured public interest and evolved into a structured evaluation of New Canaan’s ability to thrive now and in the future as a sustainable “Optimal Livable Community.” We are grateful for the combined thinking of all members of the Senior Health Care and Housing Policy Team appointed to tackle this task, led by Jim Lischer. I encourage you to reference their comprehensive “Senior Trends, Insights & Options” Phase I report on the Town’s website. Finally, on behalf of the Waveny Care Network staff and Board members, I want to thank you all again for another great year. We appreciate and value your support, and promise to continue to deliver the quality of care and service you expect from us. Most sincerely, 1 Harry T. Rein Chairman, Waveny Care Network Back in January when we met for the first time to discuss the ‘Swinging for Seniors’ event for 2009, some assumed it would be a challenge due to the struggling economy – but apparently our planning committee wasn’t willing to give that notion a second thought. Thanks to their skill, eagerness, optimism and persistence, the event exceeded all expectations for participants, players, raffles item, volunteers and sponsors. We are proud to report that our seventh annual “Swinging for Seniors” golf and tennis fundraising event raised over $130,000. As always, 100% of event proceeds are directed to Waveny’s financial assistance program, which provides financial support to patients and residents who cannot afford the full cost of their care at Waveny Care Center, The Village and New Canaan Inn. With deep appreciation, we thank our golf co-chairs Judy Bentley and Charlie Parker, tennis co-chairs Suzie Binch, Carrie Deane Corcoran and Alice Parker, and our dedicated raffle coordinator Julianne Grace. Year after year, we are indebted to our exceptional “Swinging for Seniors” event volunteers for helping to make the day a monumental success. We also extend a heartfelt thank you to all our sponsors. Our leading sponsors were: Bronze Sponsors Gold Sponsors A. P. Construction The Maples Inn Dede and Jim Bartlett Bourgeon Capital Management Kathie and George Moore Barbara and John Burns New Canaan Alarm Co. Louise B. Goodridge Thompson & Peck Insurance Knight Libertas Alice and Charlie Parker Tennis Sponsor Susan and Harry Rein Robinson and Cole Silver Sponsors Murtha Cullina LLP Jeanie and Jeffrey Shaw Kurt Wolfgruber Awards Sponsors OmniCare Hole-in-One Sponsor Karl Chevrolet Hummer Stronghold Insurance We are particularly grateful to the numerous companies and individuals who donated products and services as raffle prizes, collectively valued at more than $13,000. And we give special thanks, as always, to the staff at the Country Club of New Canaan for their outstanding assistance and professionalism. 2 Waveny is proud to thank and honor our donors for their ongoing devotion to our organization at our annual donor recognition reception. Contributor support allows us to realize our mission in countless ways. At this year’s event, we recognized the bountiful contributions made by Louise B. Goodridge and the New Canaan Sewing Group. We also acknowledged the generous bequests of Josephine Clara Simon and Anita F. Houston. Nurturing our organization since its inception with her unique spirit of generosity and goodwill, it was our great privilege to honor our dear friend Louise Goodridge. Louise’s generous support of Waveny has been consistently mirrored by her dedicated service to us since 1975. Among Waveny’s very first corp of volunteers and maintaining that devotion for over three decades, her service includes beautifying our grounds, serving meals and tea, and active participation on both our Development and Swinging for Seniors Committees. ® waveny care network new canaan, connecticut of er ts elf, a’s Louise’s donor support and volunteerism at Waveny is rooted in a broad history of community involvement. A New Canaan resident since the age of three, she has been an active member of New Canaan’s Garden Club since its creation, has run the gift shop at New Canaan Nature Center and served on its Board of Directors, helps to manage St. Mark’s bookstore, and proudly presides as president of her condominium association. We also gave our sincerest thanks for the ongoing support and countless hours of service that Waveny has received from the New Canaan Sewing Group. Since the 1970s, the group has collaborated regularly with our Therapeutic Recreation department to share their craft with patients and residents through one-on-one visits, arts and crafts projects and activities designed to promote physical dexterity. Over the years, the Group has raised more than 1.25 million dollars for charity, which has been distributed among 78 different health and social service agencies each serving the greater New Canaan area. Waveny is most grateful to have been included among those recipients every year, in addition to having received support through annual grants for well over a decade. ,” nd n nt donor recognition AND ”DONOR RECOGNITION 2009” STARRING LOUISE B. GOODRIDGE WAVENY CARE NETWORK : ALSO NEW CANAAN SEWING GROUP FEATURING ANITA F. HOUSTON /JOSEPHINE CLARA SIMON ^THE STUDIO OCTOBER 22, 2009 3 We were delighted to have the opportunity to posthumously thank Josephine Clara Simon for her generous bequest to New Canaan Inn. Her gift is a touching tribute to the care we deliver and a testament to her belief in our mission to provide a comprehensive continuum of care to those we serve. For seven years, New Canaan Inn was Clara’s warm, welcoming home, which she believed enabled her to age in place within the community she so dearly loved. In addition, we were privileged to posthumously honor Anita Houston for her generous bequest to Waveny Care Network. She viewed Waveny’s continuum of care as the “epitome of community,” and applauded our devoted, caring staff. Giving back to her community was a paramount priority to Anita, and Waveny is deeply grateful to have received such a spectacular gesture of her respect and adoration. We are deeply grateful to both honorees and those celebrated posthumously. It is our honor to celebrate their generosity and good works, which have allowed our organization to evolve into a world-class continuum of care. Waveny continues to provide the most therapeutic surroundings to those we serve thanks to the support of our loyal donors. Seeking to better our organization as a whole by strengthening its foundation, our most recent Annual Appeal represented the second installment in a succession of efforts geared toward achieving a comprehensive refurbishment for Waveny Care Center. Monies raised through this year’s annual fund were used to continue and help complete an initiative to fortify and update our cherished skilled nursing and rehabilitation facility, which has served the greater New Canaan community since 1975. In spite of continued economically-challenging times, our loyal and growing family of donors has responded to this effort with overwhelming generosity. More than $303,000 was raised and used to launch, continue or complete key Care Center projects. Thanks to 2009 contributions, we are delighted to report that completed renovations include: • Newly installed ceiling and lighting systems on both the first and second floors • A full refurbishment of our two nourishment rooms, staff restroom and utility rooms • Total reconstruction of the first floor nursing station’s structure, flooring and furniture. Only through your support are we able to continually maintain a physical environment that reflects our mission to provide the highest quality of care to those we serve. We are most grateful to all our Annual Appeal donors for sustaining our proud position on the cutting-edge of innovative, functional and therapeutic design. 4 “ Grants to Waveny have contributed to the success of every major project we’ve undertaken and have helped us to achieve the lofty goals we set on behalf of all WHOM we serve.” We are indebted to several organizations that awarded significant grants to Waveny in 2009. The Bank of America Foundation awarded a generous grant to help continue funding of our “Leading the Way Scholarship Fund,” which allows patients in financial need continued access to the unique and innovative Bioness® NESS H200® and L300™ electrical stimulation systems used in our Stroke Rehabilitation Program. Connecticut Light & Power provided monies that helped enable us to fully fund the purchase, engineering and installation of a 250-killowatt generator for New Canaan Inn, our community for independent senior living. The Exchange Club of New Canaan Foundation provided monies used to purchase a state-of-the-art vital sign monitor for use in The Village at Waveny Care Center, our residence for people with Alzheimer’s disease and other types of memory loss. The utilization of this monitor helps to improve our staff’s daily work flow and free up time that can be better spent with residents. The Jeniam Foundation awarded us bountiful grants to purchase a state-of-the-art vital sign monitor for use in our “Leading the Way in Patient Care” program. These monitors help provide staff with more confidence in the accuracy of patient data, which can ultimately lead to increased productivity and better patient care. The monies also helped to purchase a new ‘gently used’ truck used primarily for snow removal and spreading sand and salt at Waveny Care Center. Continuing to ensure the safety of all who depend on us while controlling expenses was at the heart of this request. Thanks to a generous grant funded by the New Canaan Community Foundation, six specially selected CNAs completed an eight-week training program designed to provide job enrichment, hone leadership skills and facilitate active participation in the growth and development of Waveny. Having completed the 16-hour course, each participant achieved the designation of “Career Path CNA.” 5 Funds received through The Macauley Foundation were used to purchase two additional state-of-the-art vital sign monitors for use in The Village. The purchase and utilization of these monitors complement our ‘Best Practices’ mindset and allow us to continue to lead the way by offering the most cutting-edge resources to our residents and those within our care. The New Canaan Community Foundation provided funds, along with a pass-through grant from the Rein Family Fund, to support the purchase of a pick-up truck used primarily for snow removal and spreading sand and salt at Waveny Care Center. Continuing to ensure the safety of all who depend on us and maximizing the quality of our work while controlling expenses was at the heart of this request. The Foundation also provided monies via pass-through grants from The Jeniam Foundation to support our Certified Nursing Assistant Leadership Program designed to provide career advancement and enrichment opportunities within Waveny Care Network. Additionally, funds were used in a collaborative effort to support employee enrichment and training for all frontline caregiver staff at Waveny as well as for certified nurse assistants and home health aides from Nursing & Home Care. In an effort to continue providing the highest quality of care to the people we serve, a grant awarded by the New Canaan Sewing Group funded the purchase of a state-of-the-art vital sign monitor for use in The Village, our residence for people with Alzheimer’s disease and other types of memory loss. The utilization of this monitor will help to improve the staff’s daily work flow and free up time which can be spent delivering quality care. Continuing its annual funding of Waveny, the Southwestern Connecticut Agency on Aging, Inc. provided monies for a State-sponsored aide position to work with Adult Day participants with Alzheimer’s disease. The WorkPlace, Inc. provided generous funding for the Management Team Training Program designed to support continued leadership development of Waveny’s managers. This program and similar initiatives represent a series of efforts to foster positive culture change and improved interdepartmental communication. Monies were also used to train and certify our Infection Control Nurse in wound care to enable Waveny to have a certified wound care specialist on staff. We are extremely grateful to The Young Women’s League of New Canaan for a grant to help cover the costs associated with the Women’s Health and Wellness Program at New Canaan Inn. The Wellness Program’s goal is to enhance and maintain the quality of life and the physical and mental health of women living at New Canaan Inn. 6 Connecticut Light & Power Co. Mrs. I. H. Expenses Interest Expense 1% Depreciation 6% Medical Supplies, Drugs, Food & Other 26% Salaries, Wages & Benefits for Employees 67% Reflecting our continued investment in high-quality care, labor costs accounted for 67% of our expenses. 15 Representing our continued commitment to provide the highest quality of care for older adults in New Canaan and the surrounding communities, Waveny experienced a 6.4% increase in fiscal 2009 patient service revenue over the prior year. Due primarily to a 5.2% increase in resident days at the Care Center, fiscal 2009 revenue growth was higher than in 2008. As always, the Care Center, The Village and New Canaan Inn continue to provide quality care and services at higher than average occupancy levels. As both our federal and State governments struggle with budget deficits, and given Waveny Care Center’s mission to serve those within our care without regard to their source of payment, patient and revenue services were significantly offset ($3,118,173) by the amount of reimbursement that the Medicare and Medicaid programs discount their payments to us – an increase of 23% over fiscal 2008. Fortunately, the cost of this uncompensated care is partially offset by the continued generosity and support from our benefactors: Through our Annual Appeal, Swinging for Seniors golf and tennis fundraiser, grants and contributions, Waveny received a total of $714,000 in philanthropy throughout fiscal 2009. Reflecting our ongoing commitment to ensure quality care through a skilled and experienced staff, wages and benefits combined for 67% of our total operating expenses – an increase of 3.6% over fiscal 2008. The “medical supplies, drugs, food, and other” expense category has continued its gradual decline over the past three years due to the continued decrease in our use of outside nursing services and as well as savings generated through the addition of a Purchasing Manager hired in fiscal 2009. This represents our continued commitment to hire and retain the best and the brightest at competitive compensation packages while maintaining an industry-leading resident to staff ratio, along with the dedication of our department managers to control expenses. As of September 30, 2009, the Network’s holdings were $8,751,315, representing a modest 1.1% increase in fiscal 2009. During fiscal 2009 the Network retired $337,000 in long-term debt, and as of September 30, 2009 the balance of long-term debt was $6,136,300. The Network sustained an operating loss of ($133,974) in fiscal 2009 representing a $206,440 positive change from fiscal 2008. Cash flows from operations increased by $446,900 in fiscal 2009. We continue to honor our mission and those we serve by providing the highest quality of care through the most efficient means possible, while at the same time acting as responsible stewards of the contributions made by our loyal benefactors.
