FACTS OF
A llied H ealth
° Cardiac arrests are more common than you
think, and they can happen to anyone at any
time.
° Nearly 383,000 out-of-hospital sudden cardiac
arrests occur annually, and 88 percent of cardiac
arrests occur at home.
° Many victims appear healthy with no known
heart disease or other risk factors.
° Sudden cardiac arrest is not the same as a heart
attack.
° Sudden cardiac arrest occurs when electrical
impulses in the heart become rapid or chaotic,
which causes the heart to suddenly stop beating.
° A heart attack occurs when the blood supply to
part of the heart muscle is blocked. A heart attack
may cause cardiac arrest.

Did You Know?
In 2009, the average annual wage in Georgia for welders
was $32,200 with most people making between $22,460

During 2008, this occupation employed approximately
12,660 people in Georgia. It is projected that there will be
14,790 employed in 2018. The demand for welders will
grow by about 1.7% per year, and that does not include
the number needed to replace those who retire!

Will I receive credits that can transfer to
another college or institution?
No. Because Paralegal is a Continuing
Education program, you do not receive
credit hours so classes are not transferable.
Paralegal is a non-credit certificate
program.
Is Financial Aid available for Paralegal?
Some. Again, because you do not receive
credit hours, Paralegal is not HOPE or
Pell eligible, but it is eligible for some
government-funded financial aid such as
WIA – Workforce Investment Act. For more
information on WIA, contact your local
Department of Labor or your campus WIA
Coordinator.
Do I have to start classes in September?
No. You may come in at any time in the
program, provided the class is not a part
“II”, such as Civil Litigation II – you must
take the part “I” first.
How long will it take to complete the
program?
Slightly under a year, if you take two
classes per week. Classes are six weeks
long, so including a few breaks now and
then plus most of December off, it takes
about 11 months.
Is there job placement assistance
during or after I complete the program?
the program.
Not officially. However, we do receive
job announcements throughout the
year from various attorneys, and we
always pass those along to the students.
Internships are also available occasionally.
Networking opportunities will be made
available, including a Facebook page.
Additionally, most instruc tors are
wonderful about passing along career
opportunity information.
Are the instructors qualified?
Are classes evenings only, or day and
evening?
No. Currently they are at the North Metro
Campus in Acworth only.
Classes are evenings only. Tuesday and
Thursday, from 6:30pm to 9:30pm.
How are the classes structured?
Are textbooks required for every class?
No. Currently there is no required
textbook. An optional text which may be
purchased is Black’s Law Dictionary, but
this is strictly optional, not required. Be
prepared to take lecture notes with every
instructor, and some use handouts.
Will I be able to handle the homework
load if I have a full-time job and/or a
family?
Yes, you should be able to. Homework
depends, of course, upon the instructor,
and some may have more than others,
but it has been handled capably in the
past by others who have been through
Yes. All instructors, with the exception of
the Introduction class, are attorneys who
specialize in their respective fields. The
Introduction instructor is an experienced
and highly qualified Paralegal.
Are classes offered at other CTC
campuses?
Most classes are structured on a lecture
basis – you will spend the first five weeks
in lecture (occasionally an instructor
might require a field trip but those are
rare) then the last week will be your final
exam.
How do I register and pay for the
classes?

Not Just Anyone Can Work On Electrical Systems
experience and knowledge of
trade practices. You can bring the
recommended references to the exam.
T
o do electrical work in Georgia
you must have an electrical contractor
license issued by the State Construction
Industry Licensing Board Division of
Electrical Contractors.
The Division issues three types of
electrical licenses:
Electrical Contractor Class I -- restricted
to work on single phase electrical systems
that aren’t more than 200 amperes
Electrical Contractor Class II -- unrestricted
Low Voltage Contractor: alarm systems;
general systems; telecommunications systems;
unrestricted
You must pass an exam to get a
license. To qualify for the electrical
contractor exam you need four years
of Division-approved experience in
electrical work. You can use up to two
years of Division-approved education
for one year of the four. For the Class
II exam you need experience installing
systems that are greater than single
phase, 200 amperes.
To qualify for a low voltage electrical
contractor exam, you need one year
of Division-approved experience. You
can use Division-approved education
for up to six months of the year.
If you have a valid license in another
state, the Division may grant you a
Georgia license by endorsement. Your
license must have required you to pass
an exam and have work experience
basically equal to those for a Georgia
license. Currently the Division accepts
valid unrestricted electrical contractor
licenses from Florida, North Carolina,
and South Carolina. In any case, you
still must pay the application and
license fees for the Georgia license.

fiber optics
What Is In The New Copper?
S
ome technicians and contractors
still resist learning the tools and
techniques of working with fiber
optic cable. They may be left out of a
field filled with opportunity and job
potential. As more cabling technicians
become adept at working with fiber
optic cable, many commercial and
even residential projects are requiring
this proficiency.
Fiber optic cabling is steadily replacing
copper wire as the preferred means of
communication signal transmission.
They span the long distances between
local phone systems as well as providing
the backbone for many network
systems. Other system users include
cable television services, university
campuses, office buildings, industrial
plants, and electric utility companies.
Fiber to the Desktop is on the rise and
recently three of the nation’s largest
telecommunication service providers
announced that they have adopted
a set of standards for Fiber to the
Premise, or Fiber to the Home (FTTx),
the demand for skilled technicians is
once again on the rise.
A fiber-optic system is nothing like
the copper wire system that fiber
optics is replacing. Special techniques
must be used to properly install
fiber optic cabling. Proper training
is vital to success because fiber optic
installations can be ruined by untrained
installers. Industry experts agree that
proper training with fiber optic cable is
necessary.

Georgia Erosion and
Sedimentation Act
Compliance
T
heGeorgiaErosionandSedimentation
Act (GESA) requires that persons involved
in land development design review,
permitting, construction, monitoring or
inspection of any land disturbing activity
must meet the education and training
certification requirements, dependent on
his or her level of involvement with the
process, as developed by the Commission
in accordance with this code section and
in consultation with the Division and the
Stakeholder Advisory Board.
The GESA also states that for each site on
which land disturbing activity occurs, each
entity or person acting as either a primary,
secondary or tertiary permittee, as defined
in the State General Permit, shall have as a
minimum one person who is responsible
for erosion and sedimentation control
activities on behalf of the permittee
and meets the applicable education or
training certification requirements of the
fundamentals Level IA.
The Environmental Protection Division
(EPD) recommends, but does not require,
that at least two people from each
permittee working at a project or site
have completed the Level IA. This is in
the event that a “certified person” is out
due to illness, on vacation or called away
on an emergency, then another “certified
person” is available on-site to ensure that
erosion and sedimentation control issues
are under control, regardless of what
situation arises. The seriousness of this
is if the “certified person” leaves the site
and they are the only individual on-site
that has completed Level IA, then all land
disturbing activities undertaken by that
permittee should stop until the “certified
person”returns.

This upper-intermediate class focuses
on a review of grammar structures
that often prove difficult for students
to master. The first part of the course
covers verb tenses, the structure
and uses of the passive voice, modal
auxiliaries, especially the differences
in meanings and social context
which add a dimension of politeness
to spoken and written English. The
second half of the course deals with
longer, multi-idea sentence structures,
including adjective and adverb clauses
and reduction of those clauses, noun
clauses, and conditional (if and wish)
structures. The course also includes
practice with troublesome infinitive
and gerund forms.

Post 9/11 GI Bill Transferability
In addition to the very generous
education benefits offered by the
Post-9/11 GI Bill, there is a special
provision of the program that allows
career servicemembers to share
their remaining GI Bill (education)
benefits with immediate family
members. The key factor is whether
or not the member has used any of
his or her GI Bill in the past; only
unused benefits can be transfered.
This means that if the member has
used 12 months of his or her GI Bill,
then there is only 24 months of
benefit left to share.
Servicemembers must meet specific
criteria to be eligible to transfer
their GI Bill benefits. This includes
having at least six years of service
and an obligation to serve at least
four more.

transferring GI Bill benefits.
