We support the whole child,
driving success in school
by improving
• Children’s lives outside of the
classroom
• Emotional and physical health
• Extra time with teachers
• Skills like teamwork,
communications, critical
thinking, and resilience.
It can happen to anyone:
• Catastrophic illness or injury
• Loss of a job
• A child born with a disability.
• Domestic violence
• Financial problems
• Homelessness
• Hunger
We always will provide a safety net
of essential and urgent services.
We fill in the gaps, providing
access to critical dental, mental
and physical care, and good
nutrition. We don’t just give you
shoes, we get you back on
your feet.
We practice Collective Impact
- working together to identify
problems too big for any of
us to solve on our own. When
changing lives is the focus, it’s
rare that any one single service
can make that happen.

“When you give your gift,
you’re trusting United Way
to spend your money on
the biggest problems facing
our community. Trusting
us to do more than fund
agencies. Trusting us to
bring people together to
solve problems, making a
permanent difference in our
community. We take your faith
in our process very seriously
and work to make sure good
things happen.”

Heart
OF SOUTH HAMPTON ROADS
STEVE FREDRICKSON, PRA
DOMINION ENTERPRISES
Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of PRA Group, Inc.
It should come as no surprise that a company such as
Dominion Enterprises would earn the most prestigious
corporate award. Dominion Enterprises helps people
with important decisions like buying a new home or
searching for their first apartment, changing jobs or
buying a boat. Their goal is to inform the consumer.
In one word, Steve Fredrickson is intentional. It’s
that dedication and focus that makes Steve a great
businessman, volunteer and community advocate.
His desire to make a difference where his employees
live and work drives a volunteer work ethic that
means we can count on him whenever we really need
that extra push to get to the finish line – regardless
of the project. Like most CEOs Steve has limited
extra time, but he serves on the United Way Board
of Directors, and on our Tocqueville Cabinet – as
well as chairing a very successful 2014
community campaign while running
a growing corporation.
The Heart Award requires providing an employee
education program that communicates
the importance of community services
and United Way. But the award
also expects results – the selected
company must have employees
that both give and volunteer at
a significant level. It’s companies
like Dominion Enterprises that allow
United Way to provide for so many
in our community.
– Steve Fredrickson
Jack Ross, President and Chief
Executive Officer of Dominion Enterprises

ur volunteers — community
leaders and donors —
ask the questions you want
answered, making sure your
money is spent efficiently
to solve our most urgent
problems and drive permanent
results. That’s never as obvious
as during the allocations
process, when our community
volunteers — people like
you — pour over 990s and
audits, programs and results.
And it’s not just looking at
papers. Volunteers hit the
streets, visiting agencies to
see the service for themselves
before deciding where
funding is going, e.g. early
childhood education and youth
development, poverty, physical
and mental health, domestic
violence emergencies and
disasters, workforce readiness
and financial stability.

the problems and needs

a matter of fairness … Their

WHEN IT COMES TO GIVING… SOME
CHOOSE TO LIVE UNITED FOREVER
Deborah Stearns
“Complacency is the biggest challenge
South Hampton Roads faces. Lack
of investment in infrastructure and
education could diminish the quality of
life and opportunities in the region for
future generations. Giving to United Way
has been part of our annual plan since
1980. The Foundation is a wonderful
way to continue to support the programs
and initiatives for years to come.”

The African American Leadership Society
consists of African American philanthropists
who contribute $1,000 or more to United
Way of South Hampton Roads. Members
have the opportunity to see the impact that
their financial support and volunteerism
make on community issues. AALS has 193
members contributing nearly $250,000.
Throughout our history, African Americans
have always embraced a legacy of giving.
We give to our churches, social and civic
organizations and volunteer our time.
For African Americans, the reason for
giving is simple; we believe in taking care
of one another.

20 years of
leadership through
the power of diversity
Project Inclusion is a Board Governance
Leadership and Development Program
sponsored by United Way of South Hampton
Roads. This program has received a national
award from United Way of America as one of
three best practice programs in the country
for diversity.
Project Inclusion prepares volunteers for board
governance with United Way agency boards
as well as other volunteer organizations. This
training is an on-going process to benefit
the entire South Hampton Roads community.
While the focus is on the non-profit sector, the
leadership skills that the participants acquire
are beneficial to any company.
The mission of Project Inclusion is to serve as
an advocate for inclusion within the community,
and to build and promote cultural diversity
among the United Way member agencies and
other non-profit agencies to positively impact
the quality of life for all.

TOCQUEVILLE SOCIETY
Community Leaders we can count on
“We find ourselves in an extraordinary position. We possess the means and ability to actually improve the future. Not just for some. For many. With the help of the United Way of
South Hampton Roads we’re able to focus Tocqueville Society influence and donations on what is most needed in the community, bringing impact to scale.
We’re in a position to help thousands of local children with their education through United for Children, chaired by Tocqueville member Lewis Webb. Our newest work is Mission
United, chaired by member Scott Adams. That initiative focuses on the unique needs of our local veterans and active duty military families.
We can do all these things and more because, beyond their generous gifts, Tocqueville members play important roles in the community as business leaders, thought leaders
and advocates of philanthropy. I am truly honored to serve as chair of our state’s largest Tocqueville Society and eager to see the rewards of our efforts in the brighter
future that awaits us all.”
