Orienteering Hutt Valley presents the...
Belmont Rogaine
10 and 6 hours
Saturday 30 November 2013
In 1991 OHV ran NZ’s first rogaine in Belmont Regional Park, Lower Hutt.
(We re-created that 4hr rogaine for the 21st anniversary in 2012.)
But we've never fully used the whole of Belmont Regional Park, which is
a 3500ha triangle from the top to the bottom of Lower Hutt, and across to
Cannons Creek, Porirua. Farmland up to 456m with views to the South
Island, 60 unusual WW2 ammunition bunkers, extensive areas of native
bush. We can even extend into the hill suburbs of Lower Hutt, but this is
no stroll - deep ravines cut through the Wellington earthquake fault-scarp
to the valley below.
On 30 November, we offer you a 10-hour rogaine 0900-1900, and a 6hour option 1230 to 1830. You can start late if you want a shorter outing.
Fieldwork led by Kelvin Thiele, from the afterwork rogaine leaders “Lightning Speed Robots”. Mapping
from the OHV 1:20,000/10m geo-referenced “super-topo” mapping honed over 15 years. Organisation
by International Rogaining-recognised pioneer Michael Wood.
Base in the “Woolshed”, Stratton Street, Lower Hutt. Which is rather palatial for a woolshed. And
Stratton Street is rather rural for a street But it’s only 10 minutes from SH2.
We welcome visitors: big discounts for faraway entrants. Stay on for Sunday – we’ve got previous 1hr
mini-rogaine maps on the web! Online entries open early October, close 20 November. More details...

ORIENTEERING: "involves finding your way through unfamiliar
terrain using a map." Competitions are usually individual, but
groups are welcome too. Checkpoints may have to be visited in a
certain order, or a time limit is set. Courses can take anything from
10 minutes up, with an hour quite common. Learn more at these
websites www.ohv.org.nz (OHV) or wn.orienteering.org.nz (WOC)
ROGAINING: "a sport of long distance cross-country navigation", in
which teams of two to five people visit as many checkpoints as they
wish in a set time period. "Long" is anything up to 24hrs, but the
skills can be practised over any period, such as one hour. Learn
more at these rogaine pages www.mapsport.co.nz/wellyrog (Wgtn)

Orienteering Hutt Valley and Wellington Orienteering Club present...
P-MAX
The Afterwork Mini-Rogaining Series
Pairs...Points...Penalties...Pizza...
P-Max is a score orienteering event for teams of two or more. Or a mini
rogaine, there's really no difference. Choose your own route to visit
checkpoints to maximise your score in a given time. Get back late, and lose
points. Run or walk, it’s a great way to get fit, and explore your region!
We've moved P-Max from Feb/March to November/December. The place is
Wellington and the Hutt Valley's extraordinary network of streets, parks,
beaches, riverbanks and tracks. You'll visit places you didn't know existed!
And we give you the best recreational maps there are!
Why P? Read the website www.mapsport.co.nz/pmax. Pre-registration no longer required, just enter
on the night. Join a club and get 50% off! Enquiries Michael Wood Ph 04 566 2645
2013 Spring Programme:
Thu 31 Oct: P-Max #1 Lower Hutt

Tue 26 Nov: P-Max #4 Wellington
Sat 30 Nov: This isn't a P-Max, but a 6 and 10hr rogaine in Belmont Regional Park! (Pre-reg required)
Wed 4 Dec: P-Max #5 Wellington

RED KIWI NEWS - OCTOBER 2013
After a long winter break, The Red Kiwi program resumed with a mini rogaine in
Feilding on 22 September. Unfortunately the club event scheduled for 15 September
had to be cancelled because of logging operations. To fill the gap in the calendar,
Royce Mills offered to organise a rogaine type score event with 1 or 2 hour options in
Central Feilding.
Russell Higham has updated and extended the map of the central area last mapped for
the World Masters in 2000.
SPRING SERIES The Thursday evening twilight series kicks off on 24 October,
with events each Thursday until the final on 14 November. All events are at 6.30 pm
and based in local parks. See the maptalk website for full details.
FRANKS SMITH TROPHY + RED KIWI/ HAWKES BAY CHALLENGE
13 October Ranui Farm Park Southern Hawkes Bay. Mark this date for a good day
out, at this family friendly venue. As a small club we need a good turnout at all levels
to ensure maximum points. Entrants are needed over the White, Yellow and Orange
courses as well as the Red , so bring the family and a picnic. There is a coffee bar on
site, also indoor toilets! Again check maptalk for full details. More information will be
emailed to members.

The unfavourable weather forecast may have deterred some, but those who ventured out
enjoyed warm sun, not too much wind and no rain for the duration of the event.
Royce’s score allocation provided scope for strategy. Greg & Addi on bikes got 27 of the 41
controls , including nearly all the high pointers, while Joy , running , got 26 controls.
Wellington Club News
Recent local events
Our club’s event at Seatoun on 8 September (planned and controlled by Sean Bardsley and
Matt Turner) attracted more than 90 competitors, including quite a few newcomers, and
everyone enjoyed the spring sunshine.
Above: start/ finish area
Below: Dick Dinsdale manages to distinguish between a post box and the last control
Jamie Stewart (course planner) set up an ingenious score event on 22 September on the
Thorndon map (used as a World Cup sprint in January). A mass start at 11 am saw about 50
runners set off clutching maps and pencils for the questionnaire format. Great use of an
intricate and historic area of Wellington (scale 1:4000).
Thanks for 8 September (Seatoun) go to organiser Julia Fraser and for 22
September to organiser Jane Harding (Thorndon); also – both events – to the ever-helpful
Alan Horn.
Death in Aoraki-Mt Cook National Park
Mountaineer Duncan Rait (aged 36), who died in a fall on a ridge high up in the Tasman
Glacier area on 13 September, was the younger son in the Rait family of Whitby. The Rait
family joined the Wellington Orienteering Club in the early 1980s. Evan Rait remained a
keen competitor for more than a dozen years through to the mid 1990s. We extend our
sincere sympathy to Evan, Carolyn and Cameron in their tragic and untimely loss.
Club juniors challenge the Aussies!
The Australian Orienteering Champs in Canberra (from late September to 6 October)
includes several events in which a fiercely competitive NZ Secondary Schools Team takes
on teams from the Australian states. Our club has three members in the NZ team: Shamus
Morrison (Senior Boys), and Steph Harding and Lara Molloy (Junior Girls). The Schools
Relays are being held on 2 October.
Frank Smith Trophy on 13 October
The Hawkes Bay club is organising the WOA inter-club competition for the Frank Smith
Trophy this year, using the Ranui map near Waipukurau on 13 October. A good club turnout
is important as the scoring system awards points for all placings (as long as you finish!) and
then the best 12 scores for each club count towards the final tally.
If you plan to attend, check with Jane Harding (janeh@xtra.co.nz) about possible
car-pooling. The high price of fuel need not be your excuse for missing out.
WOA Champs at Labour Weekend
Our club is organising three events over Labour Weekend this year. There will be a longdistance (3-hour) rogaine at Mauriceville West, on Saturday 26 October; then the WOA
Champs on Sunday 27 October (sprint races at Eketahuna, and Rathkeale), and on Monday
28 October (a middle-distance race at Mauriceville West). Closing date for entries: 14
October. Helpers will be needed – please volunteer for on-the-day duties, contact Jane
Harding if you can assist with the usual support roles.
Happy orienteering –
Kate Fortune
Thorndon Score Event: 22/09/13
There was a great turnout for the score event around Parliament and the streets of
Thorndon at the weekend. Newcomers mixed with orienteering “lifers”, mixed with a
couple of the world’s best young elites …and all got their own challenge out of a
course that could be approached at any speed.
Nick Hann and Tim Robertson, who are off to Australia this week to compete at the
Australian National Champs carnival, sprinted around all the controls in a time many
would find it hard to comprehend (16.40 for Nick), but they chose not to record
answers and use the event as a chance to stay smooth and fast ahead of their coming
races. That is cool, club events are simply orienteering fix’s… that you can make of
what you want!
We reluctantly chose to use the question/answer format for this event, but it
seemed to work ok. Apologies for the odd answer that was hard to find, that wasn’t
really the idea, and we haven’t strictly enforced the scoring in this regard. In the
future it may be better to use waterproof stickers with an orienteering symbol for
this sort of urban event. We have found in the past that a sticker of about 5cm
squared is big enough, especially if placed at a standard height, eg ankle height, at
the centre of a circle. Such solutions certainly make things a lot easier for organisers
and allow the use of a greater variety of terrain.

Valley View
Sunshine at Last
The Maungakotukutuku Valley showed its pretty side for the OY event on 25 August
in marked contrast to the WOA Champs last September. The small map was just as
challenging though with a big spread of times. Shamus Morrison recently back from
the Junior World Champs was fastest on red long with Penny Kane the top
woman. Results have been posted. The map and courses are on RouteGadget.
Pass the Sunscreen
Yes for the second time in a fortnight the sun shone on OHV, this time the secondlast round of the MTBO series at Upper Hutt on 8 September. There was a free
choice of order - but if you wanted series points you had to get the lot. No
concessions for age or gender, but anyway vet Ant Bradshaw posted the fastest time.
He and Jo Holden move into the lead in the vets, Rachel and Liam Drew consolidated
their leads in the open. BTW there were two shorter options. Results...
Kombos Klean Up Korokoro
Though a storm was threatening 92 turned out to 10 September’s rogaine at Korokoro
which contains a LOT of bush. Two teams cleaned up the course even with the
reduced time of 2.5 hours, and four more teams got all but one - different strategies
are needed if you think that ALL is a possibility! Nick Hann and Tim Robertson were
way ahead of the rest in under 2 hours! Results now include a league table for
walkers.
Groovies Top Thorndon
OHV claimed top male and female results in WOC's Thorndon sprint on Sunday 22
September. Bill Edwards posted a time of 21min in the any-order event, including
recording the answers to the Q&A controls! Alexandra Riddle was the first woman,
in third overall. Tim Robertson and Nick Hann chose not to record answers in the
interests of training for their races in Australia next week, and were well under
20min. Results...
Hopping the Ditch
Kiwi orienteers are heading to Canberra for the Australian Championships. The sprint
and long events are next weekend, school events midweek, and the middle and relay
Oct 5-6. Our Tim Robertson (long distance title holder) is part of an elite "test match
team" along with Wgtn's Nick Hann and Lizzie Ingham. He is also in the NZ schools
team, managed by Anna Robertson, along with Shamus Morrison, Lara Molloy and
Steph Harding from Wgtn. More...

WELLINGTON MTB-ORIENTEERING SERIES 2013
Series/4
Cannon Point, 8 Sep 2013
Course planner Graeme Silcock and Ian McCabe. Helped on the day by a number of control
collectors. Access by kind permission of Greater Wellington Regional Council and Upper Hutt City
Council. Participants 37.
Graeme writes...
Great to have an event in the sun for a change – first of the 6 MTBO’s this year that it hasn’t rained.
The full course was about 20 minutes longer than I intended so apologies to anyone who found it
too much. From discussions I had with people about their routes it appears that there were nearly as
many routes used there were competitors.
We thought we may get one or two using the steep and slippery track towards the north end of the
map but it appears that about 10 used it, mostly coming down but a few pushed and carried their
bikes up it. Even more went up the new track we have opened up at the south end of the map. I
understand they generally found it tough, especially the skidder track between the lower control and
the hauler platform. Note the track grading is done based on how rideable it would be if it were flat,
as the map maker does not know if you will be going up or down it. It is necessary to study the
contours to gauge its steepness. (ie that track is shown as “rough/overgrown, very slow riding”
which it would be if it was flat, it’s easily rideable down although slow, but difficult to ride up due
to a combination of its surface and its steepness).
The controls on the flat were also got by a number of different routes but the choices there were
generally more subtle. Often a choice between shorter slower speed single track or faster slightly
longer roads. We didn’t try to hide the controls but did try to put them in places where they could be
missed if you weren’t looking for them on the specific section of track, and we appear to have
caused a few to ride past and have to go back.
In the afternoon we had a shorter course around the streets and parks for novices – about 5km total.
Martin took his 4 year old daughter Caitlin out thinking she would get bored after 3 or 4 controls
but she insisted on doing the whole 9 controls and I think Martin, who was walking, returned more
tired than Caitlin.
The series winners for a number of sections are now determined but there are still three contenders
in both the vet men and vet women classes and it appears just completing the course could gain you
a share of the junior men’s title.
Thanks for those who collected in the controls and to Gordon for driving them to the top of the hill
so they could all be collected by riding downhill. Thanks for all coming along. We look forward to
seeing you at Mount Victoria next month.

Wellington 2013 Afterwork Rogaine Series Results
Korokoro 10 Sep 13
Course planner Ian Harrison helped by Greg Thurlow.
Time 2.5hrs. 95% dark. Bit of a storm brewing. 92 participants.
Ian writes...
Great turnout given the weather forecast, all the maps we printed were given out. (Those
who didn't pre-register might like to ponder on the possibility of a few more turning up:-))
Now - a safety issue. We thought we had a missing person but (a) the person had joined
another team and (b) the phone number given was incorrect so we couldn't do the most
obvious check. We take safety seriously, all teams (or solos) that start must report back. In
fact rogaining is a team sport and solos are a limited exception, see the safety rules.
Teams who had claimed points from the cabbage tree (#71) but were unable to find the
ribbon will not have these points included within their score (as a lot of teams did find the
cabbage tree) and also the ribbon over the school fence, again a large number of teams did
find this ribbon.
I've learnt a lot from this rogaine. The size of the area can look big on a map, however,
when you complete the course, the area mass can be a lot smaller than you initially thought
it would be.
However I think a lot of people were very happy that the course was shortened as the
weather was getting colder and wet as the night wore on.
Results (Start was 6:05 so std finish time was 8:35 - everyone back in time!!
