THE HOPEFUL TIMES Summer 2010 A Newsletter for our Benefactors & Friends Message from the Board Chair By Sean Coughlin A dear friend of mine introduced me to Boys Hope Girls Hope when he formed the first Junior Board. I was immediately impressed with this organization’s ability to empower and inspire each life it touched, so the scholar could reach his or her full potential. I witnessed firsthand its deep impact on the lives of the scholars through my tour of the Boys Hope home, attendance at events with the scholars, and the annual recommitment ceremony at the Board Retreat. I served on the Junior Board for several years until I moved to California. On my return to Colorado, I enthusiastically accepted the opportunity to join the Board of Directors. I am honored to introduce myself to you as the Board Chair for the next term. Over the next From the Executive Director By Mary Frances Tharp July marks the beginning of the Boys Hope Girls Hope fiscal year. In looking back on this past year, much occurred positively for our organization. We celebrated the opening of the Girls Hope home and have welcomed four girls into the program. In May, we cheered on as five scholars graduated from University of Denver, Metropolitan State College, Grandview High School, St. Pius, and Annunciation. We received funding for the first time from United Way through their Youth Success Impact Investment. Over 100 volunteers spent time helping our scholars, giving approximately 800 hours of volunteer time. We welcomed six new members onto our Board of Directors. We expanded our program from serving 12 young men in the Boys Hope program to serving 45 young men and women in our Boys Hope, Girls Hope and School-Based Enrichment Program. I want to thank Scot Anderson, with Davis Graham and Stubbs, for his leadership role as board chair for making our positive strides year, BHGH will continue to enrich our program for the benefit of the scholars. We plan to expand the School Based Enrichment Program and construct an addition to the Girls Hope Home to accommodate eight scholars. I will work closely with the other dedicated board members on these opportunities and other aspects of the program. The Officers of the Board of Directors for the coming term are: Vice Chair, Ann Rice, McClure & Eggleston, LLC, ret.; Secretary, Phil Steele, S.J., Regis Jesuit High School; and Treasurer, Janet Cooper, Qwest, ret. RealSage Solutions; Christine Tedesco, Atoka Geochemical Services Corporation; Chad Thorpe, StarTek; and Elizabeth Willenbrock, UBS. I look forward to working with each of them as they help us expand Boys Hope Girls Hope. I am eager to work closely with the Circle of Hope, the Junior Board, and each of the BHGH volunteers and supporters, whom together make this program successful. Please feel free to reach out to me at anytime to discuss BHGH, the program, or just to get introduced. I would like to thank Scot Anderson for his work Thank you for your support of our programs. as board chair the past two years and also Rick Sullivan for his tireless work as a board member. I welcome several new board members to our organization: Ken Bostdorff, We’ve Moved! Regis Jesuit High School; Dan McCallin, Timberline Advisors; Andy Richardson, Effective July 1, 2010 the BHGH office moved to 7060 East Hampden Ave. #203 Denver, CO 80224 (720) 524-2061 p (720) 524-9103 f forward. He has steered us through challenging times, both financially and programmatically, as we expanded. I appreciated his calm, positive advice as we continued to grow. Sean Coughlin, of Slalom Consulting, is our board chair for 2011. He first became involved with Boys Hope Girls Hope serving on the initial Junior Board. His enthusiasm and expertise is already making an impact as we expand our board, donor base and volunteers. 2011 will be an equally busy year. We plan to expand our School-Based Enrichment Program to at least one other school starting in September. In 2010, we partnered with Escuela de Guadalupe and Annunciation Schools, working with 4th and 5th graders. Based on pre- and post-tests, students in the enrichment program improved on average 185% with the English vocabulary. We also plan to start the Girls Hope addition planning, so we can serve our typically eight scholars in the home. We are putting into place new ways for you to learn about our program and what is happening at Boys Hope Girls Hope. Become a fan on Facebook and look for our upcoming blog. I am fourteen years old and I am going into the ninth grade at Regis Jesuit High School. I was in seventh grade and my brother was in eighth when he was accepted to Boys Hope so I wanted to follow in my brother’s footsteps. When I am out of school I like to try many new things. My two favorite sports are football and basketball. I love football because I have been playing since I was six years old. The weird thing is that my mom taught me how to tackle and my coaches told me that I am a good tackler. That's why I love football. The reason I love basketball is because it is a really competitive sport and I am a really competitive kid. My goal for Regis next year is for me to be the best and do the best I can. While I am at Regis I want to make new friends and I want to show everyone that I can do well in school. For me to do well in school I will have to focus. Regis will be good for me because I won't have a lot of distractions from the girls. I just love how Regis welcomes you right in and makes you feel like you are at home. That's why I stay at Boys Hope so I can go to Regis. Thank you for making it possible for me to be at Boys Hope. Wish List Please contact Tracy, 720-524-2061 or tgoodwin@bhgh.org if you have, or can help secure, any of these items for the residences. I am 15 years old and I am a freshman at Regis Jesuit High School. My new found favorite thing to do is play tennis. I came to Girls Hope because my Uncle Kenneth was in Boys Hope. My mother and I discussed me joining the program and after consideration we decided for me to start the process. In August 2009 I was able to go start my freshman year at Regis. I really enjoyed my year at Regis. My favorite subject was Theology and I liked all my teachers. My goal for sophomore year is to get a 4.0 GPA. I enjoy tennis very much. I had not joined a sport team before and now that I have I really enjoyed being on a team. I like the fact that I play with a team and I met a lot of new people. I played the whole season and the fact that I made the team without much experience was really great. I enjoyed freshman year very much and I can’t wait to go back to school this year.
