SEPTEMBER BUSINESS AFTER HOURS HOSTED BY MICHAEL’S SEAFOOD ON WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 12TH, 2012 On a beautiful September evening just weeks after the rush of the Tourist season, Michael and Shelly McGowan welcomed the Chamber membership to their world famous establishment in the quality style they are so well known for. Little did any of us know, that we would lose Michael on October 9th. Words escape how I feel as I write this, just let it be known, that all I can say is Thank You Michael for being my friend. After feasting on shrimp and grits, crab dip and Michael’s wonderful Chowder, we had a few announcements and then a few door prizes. First up as always, we had the 50/50 raffle which was won by Judy Shaw. Shelly and Michael graciously donated their 50% to the Chamber of Commerce. Rick Knott won an original phot by Paul Boroznoff of Southern Digital Art,com depicting the Carolina Beach Fire Department flag on 9-11-12. Next, Van Coley won a gift bag donated by The Checkered Church. Canvas Giclee Printing.com donated a beautiful canvas that was taken home by a guest of Southern Sign (hopefully a new member). Bill Davis garnered an Island Chic Boutique Gift Certificate, while Mike Seigh won a gift card from Island Florals by Roxanne. The final BIG Door prize of two tickets to the upcoming Seafood Blues & Jazz Festival were won by Mike Champlin (who is already volunteering). Take a minute and reminisce with the selected photos below. Michael, We already miss you...you were one of kind. Shelly, our collective prayers and love go out to you and your family. Page 8 Message From The Chair We are just days away from one the most anticipated festivals of the year, the 19th Annual Pleasure Island Seafood Blues and Jazz Festival! We're excited to have the legendary Gregg Allman headling this epic two day festival. Both days will consist of musical performances on two stages, a crafters village, kidz zone play area and some of the finest food you'll find East of the Mississippi! Events of this caliber require a lot of support, sponsors and volunteers and we greatly appreciate all of you! Be sure to stop by and visit the sponsors and we hope you enjoy the festival! Even though we are entering the latter part of 2012, there are still many events planned for Pleasure Island. Be sure to stay up to date and informed by visiting our website www.pleasureislandnc.org. Mike Worley, 2012 Chair Edge Entertainment In Memory of Michael McGowan Friends: I usually do not write my personal thoughts when it comes to Chamber business. Gail and I try to remain neutral and supportive of all that is good about Pleasure Island and not take sides in the occasional bickering that occurs on this Island. With that in mind, I would like to say that I was saddened and found myself speechless when I heard of Michael McGowan’s passing on Tuesday, October 9th, 2012. “The Good, they die young” kept coming to my mind. Why do we have to lose someone as good, as vibrant and as fair as Michael? There is no sense about it, but I will say in his short time on this Earth, he made a huge impression on me. I first met Michael and Shelly shortly after they opened in Federal Point Shopping Center. I, like many of you, was a frequent visitor to the Island and enjoyed finding our favorite ‘local’ places. I have always felt comfortable in their restaurant. Every time I came to town, they would ask “How was your trip?”, “What have you been up to”, “How is Winston-Salem”. It was personal, it was friendship. Once I decided to relocate here, I was thrilled to rent space two doors down from Michael’s Seafood and became a ‘regular’, almost getting a bar stool named after me (Charlie beat me to that honor). Through the years as an Architect on the Island, Michael would always send people my way, take time out of his busy life to sit and have a beer. Michael was a true friend in every sense of the word. I will miss him more than these words can say. Even after I moved from Lake Park, I still frequented Michael’s, always with a warm greeting, handshake and “Let me buy you a beer”. My daughter’s early years were spent at the Video game at the corner of the bar. Michael would walk by and ask her how she was doing and slip her a few more quarters. He was that type of Man. Teresa and I would always love running into Michael and Shelly on their few nights out on the Town—he knew how to enjoy himself on those rare occasions that he would let his hair down. He was a Duke Fan, I was a Carolina Fan, He was a Penn State fan, I was a Gator...it did not matter, he was a friend and we loved talking sports. I am so glad we got to have last month’s Business After Hours at Michael’s—it will have to be a lasting memory. Michael and Shelly always added a bit of class to every occasion. Watching those boys grow into young men—so polite and so full of energy. The Chamber could not have a better friend than Michael and Shelly. At every turn, they were supportive with their donations, their time and their expertise. The Seafood Blues & Jazz Festival will not be the same this weekend without Michael’s bowl of Chowder that he would insist that I eat. Shelly, please know this Island is grieving with you and your family and will be for a long time. Michael, thank you from the bottom of my heart for being a friend to me and my family. You made a difference in our life and we will forever be grateful for your kind friendship. Michael McGowan proudly represented what is good about Pleasure Island. Going to miss you Buddy… Greg Reynolds
