Keeping families together and strong
Keeping families together and strong Annual Report 2013 www.rmhsi.org.nz This is Tatiyana Kiri-Marsters and her mum Jennifer. Their family spent 106 nights at Ronald McDonald House South Island in Christchurch in 2013 while Tatiyana received oncology treatment. A Helping, Healing hand for Families “When we arrived, we were just so scared about all of the unknowns and the uncertainties. We were also a bit shy, but within a few days, it felt like we were right at home. Meeting other families and swapping stories has really helped us.” – Jennifer Kiri When a child is sick it is vital to their healing process that their family is close by. Our mission is simple, to improve the health and wellbeing of those children by providing free accommodation and support to their families while they are in hospital. We established our two facilities, Ronald McDonald House South Island in Christchurch and the Ronald McDonald Family Room, Southland Hospital, to help children live happier, healthier lives. These facilities support families of children up to and including the age of 21, and as many as 30 families could be being supported each night. Families are never charged for their stay, regardless of whether it is for one night, or many months. Having a sick child is stressful and while parents are focused on the medical needs of their children, our facilities aim to alleviate emotional, practical and financial stress for families. With the stressors of everyday life removed, families can simply concentrate on what matters most - helping their children heal. No child should have to face their medical journey alone. We know families are stronger when they are together and our facilities help to keep them that way. 2 Meet the Murphy Family January 9, 2013, was the day that changed the Murphy family’s life forever - two-yearold Tasja had just been diagnosed with a brain tumour following a routine CT scan after she fell from a trampoline. The Greymouth family, Mum Natasha, Dad Phil, big sister Pyper and Tasja, were in Christchurch the very next day and more results followed - Tasja’s tumour was rare, and it had spread to her spinal cord. Attempting to take in the news while in unfamiliar surroundings, the family was told they could stay at Ronald McDonald House South Island. “We were greeted by the lovely Jan (After Hours Supervisor) the first night we arrived. Our world had just been turned upside down and we had no idea what was happening, but she was a calming presence,” says Natasha. “Jan showed us around and we were so overwhelmed, I remember asking her ‘where do we pay’ and she replied ‘it’s all free!’ We couldn’t believe we didn’t have to worry about accommodation and food. And we could stay for as long as we needed.” The Murphys spent 186 nights, or nearly six months, at the House, but for the family it became more than somewhere to stay. “To be able to have our family together and have a place to call home was really important while Tasja was receiving treatment,” says Natasha. “The staff at Ronald McDonald House South Island helped us get through so much that there are no words to explain how grateful we are to them, they became our family! We were blown away by the amount of volunteers there were and how much they did for us and the other families. And having other families who were going through their medical journeys right by your side really made a difference too.” The great news is that Tasja is now in remission and they only have to visit the House for the occasional checkup. “We are so happy to be home and seeing Tasja doing all the everyday things a normal three-year-old does,” says Natasha. “She is full of life and loves being home with her sister, Pyper. And although it’s great to be home, we do miss all the lovely staff and volunteers at the House - they are such wonderful people who made our hard journey that little bit easier.” Natasha, Phil, Pyper and Tasja Murphy stayed at Ronald McDonald House South Island in Christchurch for 186 nights last year while Tasja was receiving treatment for a rare brain tumour. 3 560 families 924 These families visited times and accounted for 6,740 bed nights HT S 7 NIG The average length of stay was OUR FAMILIES COME FROM THESE REGIONS 29% 24% SOUTHLAND 16% NEONATAL 13% MEDICAL 13% SURGICAL 11% ONCOLOGY 9% EAR, NOSE & THROAT 9% GASTROINTESTINAL 5% ANTENATAL 4% NEUROLOGICAL 4% RENAL, LIVER & KIDNEY Volunteers gave 5790 CANTERBURY WEST COAST 18% HOURS We supported THE MOST COMMON DIAGNOSIS ARE OUR FAMILIES of their time MARLBOROUGH NELSON & TASMAN 14% NORTH ISLAND & OVERSEAS 8% OTAGO 7% QUEENSTOWN & LAKES 2% STATS AS AT 31 DEC 2013 4 WE TURNED 10! We celebrated a decade of supporting families in need by having a party at Miles Toyota with all our wonderful donors, volunteers and friends. It was made even more special by a visit from the Smail Family, who were the first ever family to stay at the House while then 11-year-old Taryn went through cancer treatment. WHAT A YEAR OF EVENTS! Collectively, our four major events – Supper Clubs in Christchurch, Dunedin and Queenstown, and A Day at the Polo, raised a significant $186,000! We have a host of loyal and generous supporters that attend these events and ensure their success. Here are a few pictures from our 2013 events calendar. RMHSI Board members Kipp Alexander, Stuart Leck, Rob Aitken, Amanda Cooper-Davies and Mark Abbot and CEO Emma Jones (second left) watch Taryn Smail cut our tenth anniversary cake! WHEAT AND WHEELS In April the Mid Canterbury Vintage Machinery Club celebrated their 30th Anniversary and hosted a fantastic event The Wheat and Wheels Rally. The Rally was held in Wakanui, Ashburton, and thousands of people went along to check out the vintage and classic cars, machinery and trucks. Numerous Mid Canterbury families have shared their children’s medical journey with us, so the Club decided to donate the proceeds of this very successful event to us – a whopping $20,000! 5 The Official Opening of the Ronald McDonald Family Room, Southland Hospital “It was so nice to have somewhere to settle in and unpack my clothes as you get moved around on the wards. And it was often just a nice relief to be away from all the beeps and smells of the hospital.” – Nicky Jones, the first Family Room guest Ronald McDonald House South Island expanded its services in 2013 with the much anticipated opening of the Ronald McDonald Family Room, Southland Hospital. FOUNDATION SUPPORTERS ROOM SPONSORS The Family Room, which connects directly to the Neo Natal and Children’s Wards, offers true respite for families. It was purpose built to allow parents and caregivers to take a shower, grab some sleep, make a snack or simply take a break away from the beeping monitors and stress of the ward. With us taking care of the little things, families are instead able to concentrate on what really matters - helping their children heal. At night, the four families with the greatest need are accommodated at the Family Room in ensuite bedrooms so they can be just steps away from their children. Thanks to the generosity of funders, businesses, individual donors and groups, the construction and fit-out costs for the Family Room, in excess of $1 million, were met. Huge thanks must be extended to the Family Room Foundation Supporters and Room Sponsors. 6 Our Treasured Volunteers Without volunteers, we simply wouldn’t be able to operate. Thank you to all the wonderful people who gave their time and energy over the course of 2013. Gay Goodman and Robyn Cumberpatch volunteer at the House in Christchurch every Tuesday. We opened the Ronald McDonald Family Room, Southland Hospital, we supported 560 families from all over New Zealand and we were granted permission to build a Family Room facility in the new temporary Children’s Haematology and Oncology Centre at Christchurch Hospital. The reason this year of significance was so successful is that we are in good financial stead, with the ability to support current facilities, and look towards a future of growth. But years like 2013 are only achieved with the support of the key players in the Ronald McDonald House South Island family. The continued backing of our donors ensured that we were operating to our best possible capability; without that generosity we simply could not have offered our services. Whether it be financial or donations in-kind, each and every gift had an impact and directly assisted families in need. Our volunteers remain the backbone of our organisation, combined they contributed 5,790 hours to the organisation. This time they gave was invaluable – not only was it of huge cost benefit to us, they provided joy and warmth for guest families simply with their presence. The operational and fundraising teams also worked tirelessly towards our cause in 2013. Guest family feedback has proved that the operational team are, as always, caring, supportive and consistent in their service. Similarly, the fundraising team has nurtured donors both new and old, hosted fantastic events and made inroads with innovative new strategies. This team of volunteer members are insightful and generous, and have kept our mission close to heart over what was a challenging and eventful year. Thank you to you all the donors, volunteers, staff and the Board for your significant contributions. Lastly I must pay tribute to Lionel Whitehead who passed away in early 2014. Lionel pioneered Ronald McDonald House activity in New Zealand and went on to serve as the Ronald McDonald House Charities New Zealand Chairman and CEO for many years. Lionel leaves a legacy of a family of charities that continue to work towards what was his ultimate motivator – supporting Kiwi families during a time of need. As we look forward, supporting families is what we will continue to do, and we are expanding our services to enable us to do that for even more people in need. We know families are stronger together, so thank you again for helping us to do that in 2013, and we hope you will continue to journey with us and the families we support into the future. Leading all these wonderful key players are my fellow board members, whose guidance and strategic direction are the cornerstone of the organisation. Stuart Leck, Chairperson 9 LETTER FROM THE CEO The year 2013 was one of achievements for Ronald McDonald House South Island – the House turned 10, we reached the milestone of providing 100,000 bed nights and our new facility opened its doors in Invercargill. In March, our loyal volunteers and supporters gathered with us at the premises of long time sponsor, Miles Toyota, to mark the House’s 10th anniversary. We reflected on the support from the community that allowed 2,500 families to stay with us throughout the decade and welcomed back the Smail family, who were the first family to utilise the House in 2003. Come mid-year and we reached our 100,000th bed night – a significant figure that really highlighted to us the importance of our place in the communities we serve. We are here to serve families while their children are receiving medical care, and when we achieve numbers like that, we know we are achieving our Mission. 2013 saw our occupancy levels increase by a staggering 34% on the previous year, and though this was a significant rise; we accommodated and served the 558 families that walked through our doors to the highest possible standard with an unswerving passion and enthusiasm. The unfortunate reality is there will always be a need for our services, and as the 2013 occupancy level shows, this need is continually growing. This is why we were thrilled to open the Ronald McDonald Family Room, Southland Hospital, in December. The Family Room offers respite to families with children on the Neonatal and Children’s wards just steps away from their children. It has a shared kitchen, lounge and laundry facilities and four en-suite bedrooms are available to those families facing the greatest challenges. This amazing facility provides parents the opportunity to take a shower, grab some sleep, make a snack or simply take a break away from the beeping monitors and stress of a ward. It is an oasis within what can often be an overwhelming time and by taking care of some of these more practical needs for families, they can instead concentrate on what really matters helping their children heal. In its first month of operation, the Family Room provided 127 bed nights of accommodation to families in need, supporting predominantly the Southland and Central Otago regions. Being able to open the Family Room doors and meet a very real need for those families, and the many hundreds more that will inevitably come, was truly a significant highlight of 2013. To the Board, volunteers, staff, generous donors and constant friends of Ronald McDonald House South Island, you are what makes the charity tick, and we have you to thank for making 2013 great. As we strive forward towards new horizons, we know you will continue to journey with us and add more layers to our story. Thank you all for your contributions, they are recognised, and we are truly grateful. Emma Jones, CEO 10 LETTER FROM THE TREASURER Research has proven that children heal faster when their families are nearby, which is why we provide our services. But to provide our services, we rely on the partnerships we have created and maintained to ensure we have the income to support our facilities. At year end, our net equity position was $15,001,357, which only goes to show that our partnerships are indeed strong, and we are happy that the organisation is standing in such great financial shape. Being in this position means we can look to our future projects and continually work towards our goal of supporting families in need, while operating with accountability and transparency. Given the challenges we have faced following the Canterbury Earthquakes, we have also ensured that we have accumulated operating expenses to guarantee we are never in a position where our delivery of service would be compromised. Our fundraising revenue was $1,459, 862, compared to $832, 831 on the previous year, which is a testament to the team rebuilding confidence with donors in an unsettled Christchurch market. It is also indicative of the loyalty of our donors; people give with an expectation that their funds will be used to provide free accommodation and support, and people’s willingness to donate shows that the public is confident we are spending prudently. Overall, I believe the organisation has performed well financially, particularly given the obstacles not-for-profits face in ever-changing and sometimes insecure markets. So my thanks go to our staff for their commitment to the progression of this organisation. Thanks must also go to Marriotts for once again preparing our audited accounts so that we can show you, our supporters, how you have made a difference. Kipp Alexander We have had our first full year operating at capacity since the House was earthquake damaged, which is reflected in our accommodation revenue. This increase, from $435,316 to $603,730, has meant that rising operational costs such electricity, gas and essential maintenance can be met with security. 11 SUMMARY OF FINANCIAL STATEMENTS As at 31 Dec 2013 FINANCIAL POSITION Total Current Assets 2013 2012 926,215 1,174,117 Total Non-Current Assets 14,259,610 13,652,038 Total Assets 15,185,825 14,826,155 Total Current Liabilities 184,468 918,147 Accumulated Funds 15,001,357 13,908,008 Total Funds Employed 15,185,825 14,826,155 2013 2012 STATEMENT OF CHANGES IN EQUITY Accumulated Funds at start of year 13,908,008 9,295,639 Net Surplus for the year - House 833,212 489,853 Net Surplus for the year – Invercargill 260,137 (51,515) - 4,174,031 15,001,357 13,908,008 Movements in Revaluation reserve Accumulated Funds at 31 Dec 2013 SUMMARY OF FINANCIAL PERFORMANCE Year ended 31 Dec 2013 RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE SOUTH ISLAND, CHRISTCHURCH 2013 2012 Income Appeals, Promotions, Donations & Grants 459,675 346,181 Fundraising & Direct Marketing Initiatives 638,370 503,745 RMHC Grant Room Tariffs 150,000 599,908 435,316 Leased Property Income 62,810 35,000 Interest Received 59,263 40,843 Insurance Claims - 128,990 1,970,026 1,490,075 626,399 612,969 Total Income Expenses House Operations Administration Property Expenses 93,510 69,121 70,411 139,252 Fundraising & Direct Marketing Costs 346,494 178,880 Total Expenses 1,136,814 1,000,222 833,212 489,853 2013 2012 129,532 - 119,667 - Fundraising & Direct Marketing Initiatives 30,216 - Capital Campaign Donations 42,995 - 3,822 - Total Surplus RONALD MCDONALD FAMILY ROOM, SOUTHLAND HOSPITAL Income Appeals, Promotions, Donations & Grants One Off Major Donation $US100,000 Room Tariffs Interest Received 467 88 326,699 - 60,468 51,603 Administration 3,386 - Property Expenses 2,708 - Total Expenses 66,562 51,603 Total Surplus 260,137 (51,515) Total Income Expenses House Operations - 12 NOTES TO THE SUMMARY OF FINANCIAL STATEMENTS For the year ended 31 December 2013 1.
