Amazing Animals
From thick-furred brown bears to bumpy-skinned
geckos, and from gliding sea turtles to thundering
wild horses, the world of animals is wonderfully
diverse. This popular and newly expanded series
continues traveling the planet to study these and
other fascinating mammals, birds, reptiles, and fish.
Beautiful photos are paired with STEM-appropriate
text to examine the featured creature’s appearance,
habitat, behaviors, and life cycle. Each book also
presents a folk story that people have used to help
explain the animal’s appearance or behavior.

Reading Level: Grade 3 and up
Grow with Me
Grow with Me peers under the ground, into trees,
and elsewhere in nature to explore the lives and
growth of an assortment of creatures and plants.
These books for ages eight and up offer elementary
but fascinating studies of the life stages that
insects, mammals, birds, and vegetation experience
as they mature. Magnified photos, easy-to-follow
text explaining life stages, and a life-cycle recap all
contribute to an educational experience focused on
an up-close look at how the featured creature or
plant changes and grows throughout its life.

Creepy Creatures
Some of our world’s most intriguing animals are
among its creepiest. Creepy Creatures looks into the
microscope, combs through fur, and investigates the
outdoors to spotlight insects and other invertebrates
that scurry, fly, or jump. Each book matches clear,
STEM-appropriate text with up-close (and often
startling) photos to give young readers an easyto-follow introduction to the featured creature’s
body, growth process, behavior, food sources, and
common habitats. Each title concludes with an
activity that emphasizes the animal’s defining physical
characteristics.

When Dinosaurs Lived
The terrifying Tyrannosaurus rex. The tanklike
Triceratops. Although they vanished from Earth
millions of years ago, these and other extinct
creatures remain endlessly fascinating. When
Dinosaurs Lived takes young readers back in
time for a fundamental introduction to six ancient
reptiles—some huge, some fast, and some winged—
and the world they ruled.
Age of Dinosaurs
From the long-necked Apatosaurus to the toothy
Tyrannosaurus rex, the age of dinosaurs was filled
with spectacularly diverse life forms, many of them
enormous. This series invites readers on fascinating
paleontological expeditions, opening each book
with the moment of the prehistoric creature’s
discovery and concluding with what scientists know
about it today.

Lichen-Loving Reindeer
Weighing almost 600 pounds (272 kg) and standing taller than most
men, caribou are sometimes called reindeer. Both males and females
have antlers, although the female’s antlers are not as large as the
male’s. There are about five million caribou, and they are an important
food source for wolves, bears, and people. Wolverines also prey on
them, and eagles and lynx hunt their calves. Migrating up to 400 miles
(644 km), caribou may travel 50 miles (80 km) in a single day in search
of lichen (which is often found on bare rocks because it has no roots)
or vegetation such as grasses, tree shoots, or shrubs. Caribou usually
start eating lichens in September, which is also the beginning of their
breeding, or rut, season, when the males fight for mates. Striking each
other with their long antlers and hooves, some males are killed or
injured. After the fights, weary bulls are often killed by wolves, which
bite down on their neck and nose and push them onto their side.

Odysseys in Nature
Every biome on Earth contains predators and
prey—links in food chains that connect different
species to one another. Odysseys in Nature invites
advanced readers along on a journey to experience
the relationships of the natural world like never
before. Joining geography and science, these titles
feature a sophisticated design that serves as a
fitting backdrop to images of plants and animals
from the entire spectrum of the food chain. Side
panels and colored glossary terms assist in making
the text accessible to a wide range of learners.

Wars aren’t just won or lost on the battlefield. For
centuries, nations have employed Wartime Spies
to stay one step ahead of the enemy. In this new

events surrounding significant conflicts, uncovering
how spies from all sides played a role in the war’s
outcome. Each title demonstrates how its era’s

tricks, and technology to outwit one another. A
separate timeline of important events adds further

Attack on Pearl Harbor
With their attack on Pearl Harbor, the Japanese hoped to
disable America’s pacific naval fleet so that the U.S. would
be unable to interfere in Japan’s planned takeover of the
colonies of Southeast Asia. The Japanese presumed that the
shock of such an attack would force the U.S. to surrender
quickly. Rather than leading to a quick peace, however, the
attack on Pearl Harbor spurred the Americans to war. Later
reports of Japan’s brutal treatment of prisoners of war only
added more fuel to Americans’ hatred for Japan. A 1944
poll revealed that one in eight U.S. residents believed that
everyone in Japan should be killed after the war.

Eleanor of Aquitaine
Eleanor of Aquitaine (1122–1204) was one of the wealthiest
and most powerful women in medieval Europe. At the age of
16, she married French King Louis VII and later accompanied
him on a Crusade to the Holy Land. After Eleanor ended her
marriage to Louis in order to marry King Henry II of England,
the English gained control of many regions previously
controlled by France. In 1173, Eleanor supported a revolt
against her husband, for which she was imprisoned until
Henry’s death. During her reign as queen of both England
and France, Eleanor emphasized reverence toward women,
and largely due to her powerful presence, women were
celebrated in art, literature, and music.

Fetch!
From hardworking German shepherds to highenergy terriers, there are dogs to match the
lifestyles and personalities of many people. Fetch!
helps future pet owners retrieve basic knowledge
about the traits and history of six popular dog
breeds. Dynamic photos bound off the page, and
the text gently instructs young owners in the care
and responsibility of pets. At the end of each book
is a panel about a famous pop-culture example of
the breed, from Snoopy to Toto.
Horsing Around
What brushes are used to groom a horse? How do
you get a horse to start and stop? What do judges
look for at horse shows? When should a horse be
trained with a lunge line? Horsing Around offers
a brief tutorial on the care, training, showing, and
riding of horses, concentrating on each aspect in
a separate volume and addressing the concerns of
some of the youngest horse enthusiasts. A special
dictionary of equine terms defines commonly
encountered vocabulary, and other resources
encourage further exploration.
