When Dinosaurs Lived takes young readers back in time for a fundamental introduction to six ancient reptiles—some huge, some fast, and some winged— and the world they ruled. Age of Dinosaurs From the long-necked Apatosaurus to the toothy Tyrannosaurus rex, the age of dinosaurs was filled with spectacularly diverse life forms, many of them enormous. This series invites readers on fascinating paleontological expeditions, opening each book with the moment of the prehistoric creature’s discovery and concluding with what scientists know about it today. © 2012 © 2011 Price Individual titles: $28.50 / $19.95 Series of 6: $171.00 / $119.70 Specifications Size: 9-5/8" × 10-1/2" Page count: 24 Author: Kate Riggs Includes table of contents, book references, websites, glossary, and index Graphics: Color and historical photographs and illustrations Dewey category: 567 CCSS correlations: RI.1.1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 7; RI.2.1, 2, 5, 6, 7; RI.3.1, 2, 5, 7; RF.1.1, 3, 4; RF.2.3, 4 Titles Apatosaurus 978-1-60818-116-2 Pterodactyls 978-1-60818-117-9 Stegosaurus 978-1-60818-118-6 Triceratops 978-1-60818-119-3 Tyrannosaurus rex 978-1-60818-120-9 Velociraptor 978-1-60818-121-6 Price Individual titles: $38.50 / $26.95 Series of 5: $192.50 / $134.75 Specifications Size: 9-5/8" × 10-1/2" Page count: 48 Authors: Sara Gilbert, Sheryl Peterson Includes table of contents, bibliography, book references, glossary, and index Graphics: Color and historical photographs and illustrations Dewey category: 567 CCSS correlations: RI.5.1, 2, 3, 8; RI.6.1, 3, 7; RST.68.1, 2, 5, 6, 8 Titles Apatosaurus 978-1-58341-974-8 Stegosaurus 978-1-58341-976-2 Triceratops 978-1-58341-977-9 Tyrannosaurus rex 978-1-58341-978-6 Velociraptor 978-1-58341-979-3 ▼ Reading Level: Grade 1 and up A/R Level: 7.1 ATOS, 1.0 point Creative Digital eBooks available 11 Reading Level: Grade 4 and up Living Wild Vivid photographs help take readers on a virtual field study to observe the life cycle and behaviors of each featured mammal, bird, or reptile. Lichen-Loving Reindeer Weighing almost 600 pounds (272 kg) and standing taller than most men, caribou are sometimes called reindeer. Both males and females have antlers, although the female’s antlers are not as large as the male’s. There are about five million caribou, and they are an important food source for wolves, bears, and people. Wolverines also prey on them, and eagles and lynx hunt their calves. Migrating up to 400 miles (644 km), caribou may travel 50 miles (80 km) in a single day in search of lichen (which is often found on bare rocks because it has no roots) or vegetation such as grasses, tree shoots, or shrubs. Caribou usually start eating lichens in September, which is also the beginning of their breeding, or rut, season, when the males fight for mates. Striking each other with their long antlers and hooves, some males are killed or injured. After the fights, weary bulls are often killed by wolves, which bite down on their neck and nose and push them onto their side. 14 Reading Level: Grade 7 and up Odysseys in Nature Every biome on Earth contains predators and prey—links in food chains that connect different species to one another. The Japanese presumed that the shock of such an attack would force the U.S. to surrender quickly. Rather than leading to a quick peace, however, the attack on Pearl Harbor spurred the Americans to war. Later reports of Japan’s brutal treatment of prisoners of war only added more fuel to Americans’ hatred for Japan. A 1944 poll revealed that one in eight U.S. residents believed that everyone in Japan should be killed after the war. 39 ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS Reading Level: Grade 4 and up Reading Level: Grade 4 and up Grammar Basics This colorful series separates four parts of speech and explores each fundamental element in terms of its overall relationship to sentences. © 2013 Price Individual titles: $28.50 / $19.95 Series of 4: $114.00 / $79.80 Specifications Size: 8-1/4" × 10" Page count: 24 Author: Kate Riggs Includes table of contents, activity, book references, websites, glossary, and index Dewey category: 428 Titles Adjectives 978-1-60818-236-7 Adverbs 978-1-60818-237-4 Nouns 978-1-60818-238-1 Verbs 978-1-60818-239-8 Understanding Grammar Memory aids and examples from literature and real-life situations supplement each tightly constructed text and contribute to these down-to-earth explanations. © 2012 Price Individual titles: $38.50 / $26.95 Series of 3: $115.50 / $80.85 Specifications Size: 8-5/8" × 12-1/8" Page count: 48 Author: Ann Riggs Includes table of contents, activities, bibliography, glossary, and index Dewey category: 428 Titles Common Grammatical Mistakes 978-1-60818-092-9 Phrases, Clauses, and Conjunctions 978-1-60818-094-3 Verbs and Adverbs 978-1-60818-096-7 Nonfiction: Writing for Fact and Argument This gracefully illustrated series, written in a conversational style and featuring numerous illustrative text excerpts, provides an insightful introduction to the foundations of nonfiction. ▼ Lexile Level: 450–580 Creative Digital eBooks available ▼ Reading Level: Grade 1 and up Creative Digital eBooks available 40 © 2011 Price Individual titles: $38.50 / $26.95 Series of 4: $154.00 / $107.80 Specifications Size: 7-1/2" × 10-1/2" Page count: 48 Author: Valerie Bodden Includes table of contents, activities, bibliography, glossary, and index Dewey category: 808, 809 Titles Effective Speeches 978-1-58341-935-9 Journalistic Articles 978-1-58341-934-2 Organized Essays 978-1-58341-933-5 Truthful Biographies 978-1-58341-932-8 ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS Reading Level: Grade 4 and up Research for Writing Does a research assignment fill your students’ hearts with dread? After Eleanor ended her marriage to Louis in order to marry King Henry II of England, the English gained control of many regions previously controlled by France. In 1173, Eleanor supported a revolt against her husband, for which she was imprisoned until Henry’s death.
