HHPC: Marina Windjammers
by Sloan Gallipeo
Our Marina Windjammers members
have been busy with the Music Mobile
presentations and ushering the 2nd and
5th grade concerts at the Segerstrom
Concert Hall! Elise Masseling organized
and coordinated our group of Music
Mobile volunteers who went to four local
schools and gave twelve presentations to
3rd grade students. Over 450 students
participated in the presentations which
include demonstrations of the musical
instruments and a chance for the
students to play the instruments. Thanks
to Elise Masseling, Carlone Herman,
Joanne Fernbach, Lani Martin, Marsha
Waldman, Lisa Weller, CeCe Lorthioir,
Kathy Bunch, Annie Radcliff, Meline
Guldjian, and Sloan Gallipeo for helping.
Carlone Herman was busy organizing
and coordinating our dedicated ushering
teams in February and March. These
ladies included Joanne Fernbach, Susie
Sampson, Elise Masseling, Bonnie Rader,
Pat DeCou, Barbara Sentell, Maggie
VanEck, Charlene Bauer, Annie Radcliff,
Karen Ridout, Lani Martin, Linda Shaul,
Carlone Herman, Margie Finlay, Kathy
Bunch, Marsha Waldman, Lisa Weller,
and Ellie Matthews. Special kudos to Phil
Ridout who worked on coordinating and
directing all the school bus arrivals! We
were all thrilled to see Charlene Bauer’s
granddaughter, Claire Keeley, perform
with the Anaheim Ballet at the concerts.
Charlene said, “The ballet was a great
addition to the music and it really caught
the attention of the kids in the audience!”
Our February meeting was held at
the lovely home of Kathie Saveliev. We
were treated to music from Stan Martin
who is Lani Martin’s son. Stan showed us
how the trumpet works along with how
mutes are used to change the sound of a
trumpet. He even has a couple of plunger
parts he uses as mutes! Stan wowed us as
he played several pieces on his trumpet.
He has been playing the trumpet since
he was a child and now performs as a
professional. Most recently he had the
honor of playing trumpet as part of the
orchestra at the Academy Awards when
Adele performed her award winning song,
“Skyfall”.
Robin Silver, advisor to the
Huntington Harbour Philharmonic
Juniors, came to our February meeting to
update us on their upcoming fashion show
fundraiser on Sunday, April 21st which
starts at 10:30 am at Meadowlark Golf
From left: Kathy Bunch, Meline Guldjian, Sloan Gallipeo, Elise Masseling, Joanne Fernbach, and Carlone
Herman.
Club in Huntington Beach. Attendees
will be treated to a luncheon, fashion
show featuring the Juniors as models, and
auction. Robin told us that the juniors
have been working hard to make this
a great event. Marina/Windjammers
are looking forward to supporting these
wonderful, hardworking Juniors.
Twenty two of our members attended
the Grand Marshal Event on February
23rd at the Queen Mary. CeCe Lorthioir
attended and said, “It was a fabulous
evening of cocktails, dinner and dancing,
while everyone looked elegant in their
roaring 20s period attire!” Thank you
to Ellie Matthews who kept us updated
on this 50th anniversary celebration of
the Huntington Harbour Philharmonic
Committee.
On March 22nd a group of our
members went on a field trip to the
Orange County Museum of Art to see the
Philharmonic program for high school
students. Our members and the students
heard a musical presentation of pieces and
sounds that complimented the works of
art they viewed in the museum galleries.

for the field trip. Susie said their desire
was to give our members a chance to see
the programs their hard work provides for
the students
The House of Design is coming
up from April 23rd-May 19th and our
members are looking forward to helping
out again. Pearl Holmes, Maggie Van
Eck, and Barbara Sentell are keeping us
updated this year. Karen Ridout is on the
steering committee and was working on
selecting the caterer and vendors for this
year. CeCe Lorthioir is continuing her
work this year with the committee helping
with public relations, photography,
community outreach, and social media
to get the word out about the House of
Design.

HHPC: Islanders
by Eva Kilgore
L to R: Joyce Zimmerman Ochs, Nicolette Kubeck, Kim Willingham, Julie Huniu at the Islander Tea.
Islanders Arden Dombrowski and
Susan Qaqundah worked endlessly on
the grand marshal celebration committee
to make sure the gala was a total success!
Islanders turned out in their finest aboard
the Queen Mary to chat, dine, and dance
the night away. President Cristi Ulrich
was all smiles!
Some big applause to past grand
marshal Jenny Huntsinger, celebrating
her 25th anniversary with HHPC.
And, to Susan Qaqundah and Karyn
Sanderson for 30 years with HHPC! Hats off to Mary Busche, counting 35
years with HHPC. Finally, in the “totally
awesome” category, a standing ovation to
Jo Andrews, Joan Lund, Kay Milano and
Lou Warnock for celebrating 40 years
helping to bring music to the children of
Orange County.
Hats, hats, and more hats graced the
heads of Islanders at the gorgeous home
of Mary Nevins, as we held our annual
membership tea. Tables were beautifully
decorated, and guests enjoyed scones,
yummy little sandwiches, and more.
A very fun (yet refined?) afternoon.
Champagne, anyone?
Now, we’re on to the Music Mobile,
ushering, and helping out wherever we
can! Robin Silver is busy planning the
Junior’s fashion show, set for Sunday,
April 21, at Meadowlark Country Club.
Silent auction, lunch, and an opportunity
to watch our juniors walk the catwalk.
Bring your sister, mother, daughters,
granddaughters, friends and come to
support our teens and future HHPC
members. Have an auction item? Need
more info? Call Robin at 714-840-2534.
HHPC: Trinidad Group
by Linda Axel
It’s hard to believe that Spring is here
and our wonderful music program for our
Orange County Children is completed for
yet another year.
We took the music mobile to five
schools in our local area and introduced
the children to the instruments in the
orchestra. Helen Hagen, our devoted
music mobile chairman, lead our group to
another wonderful year of music for our
third graders.
Trinidad members were found
ushering for the concerts for the second
and fifth graders throughout Orange
County.
Our meeting for February was
hosted by Diane Campbell at her lovely
home. All 28 of us gathered in her yard
for a group photo. We had a wonderful
lunch catered by both Churee Kakimoto
and Diane Campbell. We have two new
members: Deborah Fairon and Janine
Poletti. We welcome them to our group.
We will have a fun party in March at
the home of Matt and Nancy McDevitt.
We look forward to getting together for
Trinidad Group at concert for fifth graders at Segerstrom Center.
good time and friendships. Trinidad tries
to have parties throughout the summer to
keep our group close.
If you would like to join our fun
10
and supportive group, please call Diane
Campbell at 714-840-6555. We would
love to have you be a part of our wonderful
group.

Some of our Sandpipers had
attended Music Mobile training and
enthusiastically volunteered to participate
in the Music Mobile presentations.
President Debbie Edwards thanked the
Sandpipers for their time, energy and
expertise in presenting the Music Mobile
to the local elementary schools. She gave
special thanks to Karen Tribble and
Carol Travis for setting up the training
and coordinating the Music Mobile
presentations.
Karen and Carol were also busy
organizing the ushering dates in February
and March for the Music Education
Youth Concerts held at various venues
in Orange County. Sandpipers eagerly
volunteered to be ushers. The Disneyland
Band entertained thousands of Orange
County school children and Mickey
Mouse showed up too!

of Sandpiper members carpooled to the
Bowers Museum in Santa Ana to see the
fascinating “Cut” exhibit about Costumes
of the Cinema. After visiting the exhibit

HHPC: Admiralty
by Lora Anderson
L to R: Charmaine Rood, Lisa Mulvania and Terri Feterik.
The 50th Anniversary Grand
Marshall Gala was a phenomenal success
due to the diligent work of Admiralty
Co-chairwomen Terri Feterik and Lisa
Mulvania as well as Lyn Senske of the
Sandpiper group. Two hundred & thirty
people danced to the Eric Ekstrand
Ensemble, ate a luscious dinner of steak or
salmon set on a table beautifully decorated
with an orchid centerpiece. Hundreds of
hours were expended putting this affair
together to celebrate serving more than 4
million children that have participated in

our programs during the past 50 years.
Admiralty members Marie Love
Edwards, Aurea Hood and Madeline
Cooper ushered at the Mariners Church
in Irvine during which the Solaam Luna
Ensemble played instruments from all
over the world for Orange County sixth
graders. It was a wonderful experience for
all to enjoy.
Thank you to Jan Little who hosted
the March meeting of the Admiralty
group. The 2013-2014 officer slate was
elected and will be posted in the June
issue of Harbour Light Magazine.
We invite all who might be interested
in joining the Philharmonic to one of our
meetings. We are a happy group which
takes delight in volunteering for a great
cause. We meet on the third Thursday of
each month September thru April. 10:00
AM for coffee and 10:30 for the meeting
followed by a luscious lunch.
Would you like to try our group out?

Encore For the Arts
Kenny , Bradley, and Mr. Meza, the Peruvian music instructor for the
children, practice together before their performance in Huacho, Peru.
Just when most teenagers are ready
to relax and sleep-in on their Holiday
break, two young Harbour teenagers
are ready to carry out their mission that
they have planned months prior for the
“Big Performance.” Kenny and Bradley
Smith, Co-Founders of Encore For the
Arts Inc. felt that it wasn’t enough to
just vacation to their mother country,
Peru. When they took their first trip to
Peru, they witnessed much poverty, and
noticed young children performing in
the streets and endangering their lives
at stop intersections, to earn a few coins.
After a few trips back to Peru, Kenny and
Kenny leads the audience in a percussion circle.
Bradley decided to form their non-profit
organization, Encore for the Arts. From
their own musical achievements and
years of band practice at their local high
schools, today they provide musical and
art entertainment to many orphaned and
disadvantaged children of Peru.
Encore For the Arts has been
working endlessly through various
fund-raising efforts to continue to
provide the orphaned children with a
local Peruvian music teacher, and for the
purchase of musical instruments for the
Big Performances. On a recent trip to
Peru, the orphaned children were able
to perform in front of an audience, and
feel like celebrities. Kenny has expanded
the charitable organization, through to
the formation of the Fairmont Chapter,
to teach musical lessons and for the
purchase of musical instruments to
the local middle schools in the city of
Anaheim.

accepted and greatly appreciated: Encore

International Order of the Blue Gavel
by LaVon Plumlee, District Director, District 10, International Order of the Blue Gavel Members of the International
Order of the Blue Gavel, District 10,
met recently at the Huntington Harbour

occasion featured Lloyd Claus on “Racing

informative for attendees concerning
the fate of Aegean sailboat in the 2010
Newport to Ensenada race.
The mission of the International
Order of the Blue Gavel is to recognize
Past Commodores of the international
yachting community and unite them in
order to promote the highest ideals of

Huntington Harbour Yacht Club
by Dean Oliver, Vice Commodore
HHYC Members enjoying “Havana Night.”
We are having another amazing
year at the Yacht Club, February started
off with a tasty friendly competition as
members of HHYC and the Harbour
Rod and Reel Club, pitted their best chili
recipes against each other in a chili cook
off. Win or loose everyone had their fair
share of delightful chili and cornbread.
Then the very next day we threw our Super
bowl party with 3 large screen TV’s and
plenty of wonderful food everyone had a
great time rooting for their favorite team.
Mid month we had a wonderful time with
our cruise to the Marina Pacifica Mall,
about a dozen boats tied up at the dock to
spend a relaxing weekend kicking back on
the water, shopping and enjoying the great
restaurants. Several other members drove
over to share in the festivities. We finished
up the month with an Academy Awards
party where many of our members tried
their best to guess who would win each of
the awards to win a prize and some well
deserved bragging rights.
March was extremely ambitious,
starting off with our Havana Night. This
was an incredible trip back in time to
1950’s Cuba, attendees were encouraged
to wear period clothes and participate in
casino style games, custom cigar rolling,
imported rum, and raffles. There was also
dancing and authentic Cuban food. This
was closely followed by a cruise to our
very own docks where boaters enjoyed all
our weekend festivities including our St
Patty’s Day party without even having to
leave their floating homes.
March was topped off with a
marathon day starting with a bus trip to
the Santa Anita Race track for a behind
the scenes tour of the park, followed by
a wonderful afternoon with lunch in the
Turf Club and betting aided by the track
handicapper.
Then that evening the club hosted our
third annual and always extremely classy
“Wine Knot” event. Fine food and fine
music accompanied the dozens of wines
offered by many local representatives. A
silent auction and raffles during the event
helped raise money for the American Hart
Association.
Those were only the tip of the ice
burg, we still had our monthly stand bys,
Free smoked BBQs, Movie Nights, Lunch
Cruises, Sunday Brunches, Birthday
Calibration Dinners, and of coarse every
night is a calibration with our Happy
Hours and Bistro menu.
If you’re not a member of HHYC
you’re missing out on a lot of fun and
the opportunity to meet some amazing
people. Come and be our guest at one
of our brunches currently running from
10:00 AM to 1:30 PM every Sunday.
We all take pride in showing off how
wonderful our facility is, so come over we
would love to meet you. You can always
call the club at 562-592-2186 or contact
Vice Commodore Dean Oliver, in charge
of membership, at 714-858-1444 for
information on joining. You may also visit

Cardiac robotic surgery. Our specialty.
When it comes to the advantages of robotic heart surgery over
traditional heart surgery, there’s more than meets the eye.
Performed through a few tiny openings instead of the foot-long
incision to open the chest, this revolutionary procedure means
fewer complications, less discomfort, and faster recoveries.* Very
few hospitals have the depth of clinical experience in this advanced
technology. The MemorialCare Heart & Vascular Institute at Long
Beach Memorial and Orange Coast Memorial has one of the nation’s
top cardiac robotic surgeons, Dr. Daniel Bethencourt, leading our
team. If you are considering cardiac surgery, consider the experts.

FINS
by Barbara Devlin
At the “Dump It” party: Bob Hastie, Bonnie Shumann, Craig Johnston
FINS annual “Dump It” Party -- a
party to get rid of all those unusual gifts
you have received during the year-- was
held in February at the home of Maggie
Flavia. A catered luncheon of salads,
chicken fettuccine, and spaghetti was
served to members. Everyone was
given a number and was told when the
number was announced the member
either could choose a gift package or
chose any other gift that a member had
and that only two “steals” were allowed.
The person who could not keep any
package he opened was Craig Johnson.
One of the most stolen gifts was a
package with two wine glasses and
a bottle of red wine that first started
out with Craig Johnson, was stolen by
Barbara Simone, and ended up being
won by Bob Hastie. Craig made many
trips to the gift package table. Barbara
Devlin stole a beautiful sea shell frame
to put one of her great-grandchildren’s
photo in it from Craig. A beautiful
black and white floral apron was a
big hit too—going from Loel Jones
to Barbara Simone and ending with
Helen Malloy. Loretta Maiorana chose
a package with a large sign saying “Two
Old Crabs Live Here” that was stolen
by Pat Johnson and Loretta ended up
with very, very, large slippers. Several
guests into gardening ended up with
the same gift-- a large butterfly on a
wire that could be attached to a plant.
After enjoying the gift exchange
members, returned to the kitchen to
make their own sundaes with the ice
Also at the “Dump It” party: Russel & Loretta Maiorana & Barbara Devlin
cream, nuts, homemade chocolate
sauce a la Pearl Holmes and cherries.
Also seen enjoying the party were
Mary Johnston, Bettie Hastie, Gloria
Beckstrom, Gene Simone, Donna and
Bob Longman, Russ Maiorana and
Bonnie Schumann.
Daytime Gourmet members
enjoyed a wonderful Valentine Day
Luncheon at the home of hostess,
Loretta Maiorana with Betty McCarthy
as co-hostess. Loretta decorated her
dining table with a beautiful red
tablecloth that she purchased in
Belgium several years ago and had
never used before.
The centerpiece was a bouquet of
one dozen red roses with white baby’s
breath. She had chocolate candy in the
shape of red roses and covered with red
paper at everyone’s place setting and
red chocolate hearts decorating the
table. Everyone gathered in the kitchen
to find their recipe of the day. Barbara
Devlin was told she had to start right
away as she had the appetizer to make
which was a Bacon, Pineapple and
Chestnut Rumaki recipe that was a
long-time favorite of Betty McCarthy
and it ended up being one of the best
like appetizer we have ever had. We had
no leftovers this time!
Pearl Holmes tackled a wonderful
Asparagus in vinaigrette as the salad of
the day while Marian Galanis and Gloria
Beckstrom worked on a wonderful
Creamed Spinach with Golden Bread
Crumbs. The main entrée was Boneless
Prime Rib with Dijon, Garlic, and
Rosemary with Horseradish Sauce
prepared by June Ascolesi and Mary
Berge. The other vegetable of the day
was Parsnip and Potato Puree. Dessert
was a delicious Chocolate Mousse
topped with whipped cream prepared
by Mary Johnston.

A Land Lover’s Garden Club
by Eustelle Bosler
L to R: Linda Axel and Mary Shebell
In accordance with a recent tradition,
the ALL Garden Club enjoyed lunch
at Mc Kenna’s Creek in Long Beach on
February 13. Having declared ourselves
“Divas”, we all donned our jeweled
coronets and/or fashionable fascinators
(Lyn Senske provided one to anyone who
had left home without it) and enjoyed the
food, company, and ambiance in a regal
manner. No new or old business---just
monkey business!
The March 20 meeting of ALL
Garden Club featured Eric Olsen of
Huntington Beach. Mr. Olsen spoke
on “Trace Elements, Plants, and You”.
Basically he highlighted the importance
of trace elements in fertilizers and soil
amendmenders and how different plants
L to R: Lyn Senske and Donna Gray
use them in their metabolic processes.
As always, a lovely lunch at the HHYC
followed the presentation.
The April excursion set for
Wednesday, April 17, will be a visit to
Malibu and the Getty Villa. The Getty
in Malibu is an educational center and
museum dedicated to the study of arts
and cultures of ancient Greece, Rome,
and Etruria. With its Roman inspired
architecture, the gardens are filled with
statuary and plants reminiscent of
ancient Rome. This has been a perennial
favorite for members of ALL and we
hope for lovely weather to make the tour
perfect. We will lunch nearby. We thank
our ALL president, Lyn Senske, who set
up the planned excursion and lunch at a
nearby restaurant!
The May meeting, our final one
for the 2012-2013 season, will be an
installation luncheon at Mc Kenna’s in
Long Beach. The final meeting gives us
a chance to celebrate the members who
helped make the previous year a fun-filled
and rewarding year of new information
and experiences. We also thank in
advance members who have volunteered
to work towards making the 2013-2014
season just as rewarding and fun-filled.
As usual, we extend a warm invitation
to any who would like to join us in these
kinds of activities, or might just like to
visit once to check us out. Linda Axel is
membership chair; she can be reached at
714 840 1940. Come on over!

Assistance League Huntington Beach
by Susan Bjork
Operation School Bell at work.
Operation School Bell® began
in the 1950s as a one-woman effort
to provide clothing to disadvantaged
children so they could attend school.
It is now the national philanthropic
program of Assistance League® and
more than 3 million children have been
clothed nationwide.
Ruth Ann Montgomery, a teacher
in the Los Angeles school district
in the 1950s, saw children from one
family coming to school on a rotating
basis. She discovered that the children
came to school based on whose turn
it was to wear the clothes. She asked
other parents to donate castoffs and
the “Clothes Closet” opened in Ruth
Ann’s classroom, giving out clothing to
children so they all could attend school
on a regular basis.
The Montgomery family moved to
Bakersfield, California and Ruth Ann
formed the Volunteer Service Guild
to promote her mission of outfitting
school children. Clothes Closet was
re-named Operation School Bell by
one of the volunteer’s husband based
on his experiences in the military. In
1958 the group became the Bakersfield
chapter of Assistance League, bringing
Operation School Bell to the national
organization.
In 1997, Operation School Bell was
adopted as the national philanthropic
program for all Assistance League
chapters. Each chapter determines the
need in their community and how
best their volunteers can operate the
program.
In 1975, Assistance League
Huntington Beach chapter began
Operation School Bell for students in
need in Huntington Beach. Initially,
60-80 students from 2 schools were
helped. The 5 members of the Operation
School Bell committee clothed the
students in an apartment above the
Thrift Shop, which was located on
Main St. in downtown Huntington
Beach.
Today, the Assistance League
of Huntington Beach serves 57
schools in the 5 school districts in
Huntington Beach, Fountain Valley
and Westminster. Operation School
Bell has evolved from clothing children
at our complex to clothing children at a
retail location.
In the 2011-12 school year, 1,363
students in need were clothed. For
2012-2013, 1,615 children have been
clothed. This includes 980 elementary
children, 420 middle school children
and 215 McKinney Vento ‘homeless’
high school students.

Bolsa Chica Land Trust
by Jayson Ruth, BCLT Board Member
Bolsa Chica’s First Nest Cam
The Bolsa Chica Land Trust has
very exciting news! For the first time
ever, we will be hosting a live streaming
camera filming on a critical nesting
site here at the Bolsa Chica Ecological
Reserve. The Western Snowy Plover and
the California Least Tern are two of the
threatened bird species which nest here
at Bolsa, and they will be the focus of
this unique nest camera project. The
camera will go live on the Land Trust’s
web site, www.BolsaChicaLandTrust.
org on March 11th. The video and
audio will be streaming 24 hours a day,
7 days a week for the next few months
and will offer anyone from anywhere in
the world the opportunity to experience
the splendor of Bolsa Chica.
Just like the Bolsa Chica ecosystem,
and what it offers to the public, this
camera will benefit the public in a
multitude of ways. Researchers will
have the opportunity to make long
term observations of this nesting
colony without disrupting the normal
activities of the birds. Students will be
able to visit a protected and off-limits
part of the wetlands without leaving
their classrooms. Birding enthusiasts
will be able to enjoy the birds anytime,
even at night thanks to the night vision
capabilities of the camera. You will
even be able to check in on the nests
from your smart device or tablet!
The major driving force of this
project is education. We want to provide
insight as to the lifestyle of these
two threatened birds of Bolsa Chica.
Through the live streaming video,
people of all ages will become more
aware of the indigenous inhabitants
of the Reserve and the overall value
of protecting this vital resource.
Additionally, the nest camera will
provide many benefits to the California
Department of Fish and Wildlife who
manage the Reserve. Their staff will be
able to track, record and analyze data
in an entirely new approach. We are
looking forward to hosting a discussion
board and blog so that visitors to the
website will be able to ask questions and
discuss the events unfolding at the nest
site. It will be a place where the public
will be able to post questions about the
California Least Tern at the Bolsa Chica Ecological Preserve.
bird’s nesting behaviors, ecology as well
as general info about the Bolsa Chica
ecosystems.
The Land Trust looks forward
to sharing the unfolding story of the
plovers and terns this breeding season
of 2013! We greatly appreciate the
opportunity to bring this camera
to life, thanks to the support from
the California Department of Fish
and Wildlife. This project is made
27
possible through generous grants from
Edison International, the Employees
Community Fund of Boeing California,
and member donations.
This project is also the result of
the vision and dedication of all the
tech support that is making it possible;
Variable Speed Solutions, Surfline,
Verizon Wireless 4G LTE and Trinnos
Technology – thank you!

monies raised from the 26 chapters of the
guilds. These include hands-on activities
in the schools from professional artists
in music, dance, theater and visual arts. These programs fill the gaps that have
been cut from the school budgets. There
are opportunities for at-risk high school
students to experience the performing
arts during a two week program which
29
culminates with a free performance open
to the public.
In the past year there were 458
performances attended by 325,000
children from more than 400 schools. Segerstrom Center ranks among the top
five arts education centers in the country. Flying Dutchman is proud to be a part of
the guilds.
Stop California State Lands Commission’s New Tax
by Frank Singer
The CSLC (California State Lands
Commission) is fighting us tooth and
nail to dismiss our counterclaim against
SB 152 which essentially eliminated
the rent free placement of docks in the
main and mid channels of Huntington
Harbour as a refuge for the boating
public. Apparently “revenue” is more
important than public safety.
We had our second court date on
January 16 in Santa Ana. The CSLC
brought their attorneys in full force to
squash our counterclaim. Fortunately
against strong opposition by the CSLC
the judge let us once more amend and
strengthen our counterclaim which was
submitted to the court last week (click
on link to read it).
While only around 200 or so of
the 4,000 properties in Huntington
Harbour are directly affected, the other
3,800 properties should take notice
because of what recently happened
in Newport Harbor. Using SB 152 as
impetus, the Newport Beach voted
to increase dock fees from $100 up to
as much as $4,000 per year. The city
of Huntington Beach is watching our
lawsuit very carefully. If we lose they
might very well start “taxing” the 3,800
or so property owners in Huntington
Harbour as Newport Beach has done.
Fighting the State costs lots of
money, easily $200,000 over the next
couple of years. I’ve asked everyone to
make an ANNUAL contribution of a
few hundred dollars. So far about 100
of you have donated around $60,000
and we have spent over $65,000. It’s
a new year so I am pleading for all of
you to make your 2013 contribution
if you have not already done so. I am
particularly asking the 4,000 property
owners in HH to donate something,
even a hundred dollars or so. Imagine
if all 4,000 Harbour residents made
one small $50 donation we would have
all the money we need. Everyone in
Huntington Harbour is affected!
Talk to your neighbors, we need
your support. Please contribute to our
legal fund in one of two ways. Use our

Huntington Harbour Garden Club
by Kitty Rozenstraten
At the planting workshop on February 19. From left to right: Marian Galanis, Carol Weningir, Kitty Rozenstraten, Wendy Gingerich.
Wintry weather does not keep the
birds from building their nests and it
doesn’t keep the Huntington Harbour
Garden Club from meeting and planning
activities.
Some members have spotted the first
hummingbirds building nests, laying
eggs and raising their families. These tiny
birds are a tenacious lot, and dare I say so
are the members of the HHGC. Nothing
can stop them from learning new ways to
make their home gardens more beautiful
and from promoting better horticultural
practices to beautify the community.
On January 15, members convened at
the home of Anna Belle Parsons Radcliffe.
The main attraction that morning was
Bob Franz from the Southern California
Bluebird Club.
Mr. Franz gave a most interesting
presentation on “Western Bluebirds”
or WEBLs. Bluebirds and robins are
cousins belonging to the thrush family.
Until the middle of the nineteenth
century bluebirds, Western, Eastern and
Mountain bluebirds, were a familiar sight
throughout the United States. Other bird
species introduced from Europe became
competitors of the bluebirds. Bluebirds
do not build a nest in a tree but seek out a
cavity inside a tree, a post or a man-made
nest box. And while many backyard
birds – for example the hummingbirds in
the beginning of this article - like a cozy
protected garden, nesting bluebirds prefer
open to semi open areas.
The decline of bluebirds led to
the foundation of the North American
Bluebird Society (NABS) in 1978 in
Maryland. Soon other bluebird clubs
were hatched in states from east to west.
California has a NABS affi liate called
the California Bluebird Recovery Act
(CBRP). Members of NABS are active
in installing and maintaining nest boxes
throughout southern California. Through
their efforts the WEBL population has
become much more stable. If you wish to
find out how you can volunteer, Mr Franz
can be reached via Bluebirds.bob@gmail.
com or by calling (714) 528-5082. Or
you might be interested in making your
backyard attractive to to actively attract
them to their backyard You can also stop
by the Shipley Nature Center to purchase
a nest box for $25. Club member and
Shipley Nature Center volunteer Kay
Goddard describes the wooden box as
handsome and sturdy and made to last
for several years.
Like busy nesting birds in spring,
members got busy organizing a hands-on
planting workshop on February 19,
at the clubhouse of Rancho del Reyes
Mobile Home Estates. After a short
business meeting, members gathered
around the potting table piled with pots,
cuttings, seedlings, seeds, and planting
soil. Gardening successes and failures
were shared and everybody went home
with several items for the home garden.
Hostess Pearl Holmes and co-hostesses
Mary Johnston, Carol Weninger, Barbara
Simone and Gloria Beckstrom served a
delicious lunch.
Important
business
discussed
included the General Meetings on March
19 and April 1, the field trip to Bainbridge
House on April 16 and, most important,
the Annual Fundraiser on September
31
17 at the Yacht Club. Still far away
but already in the planning, the event
is not just a fundraiser but also a great
opportunity to acquaint the community
with the many philanthropic projects of
the club.
These projects include monetary
donations to five schools in the area:
Golden View Elementary, Harbor
View Elementary, Margaret Landell
Elementary, Edison High School and
Goldenwest College. Donations, and in
many cases physical labor, help maintain
the school gardens. This year, for
example, HHGC members are involved
with the Edison High School Therapeutic
Garden. Students with special needs are
learning important life skills by growing
vegetables and flowers. Other club
projects include Roger Senior Center,
Shipley Nature Center, Bolsa Chica Land
Trust and the Norma Brandel Gibbs
Butterfly Park. If you haven’t been to the
Butterfly Park recently, you will delight
in seeing the beautiful tiles illustrating
the life cycle of the Monarch butterfly.
We invite family and friends,
gardeners and would-be gardeners to
participate in the fundraiser to benefit
the different projects. The festivities will
include wine tasting, hors d’oeuvres, a
silent auction and, of course, plants. Put
September 17, 2013 on your calendar.
More information will follow in the next
issue of Harbour Light.
Anybody wishing to attend any
of the meetings and field trips can get
information from Connie Mandic at
714-377-0017.
