Forty-Eight happy skiers arrived
in Steamboat Colorado, Jan 4th for six
days of great skiing (front cover picture).
Meetings were held every night in a
room provided by the Sheraton where we
would discuss the day, tell jokes, snack
and even imbibe a bit, and oh yes, plan
the following days activities. Bob Franz
headed up a sizable snowmobile contingent for a day. John Stevens did a great
job in putting together our NASTAR
race which most everyone participated in
and he was helped by Bill Williams and
Frank Gibson. A great Super Bowl Party
was hosted by Caroline Williams, Joetta
Wallace, and Patsy Mosley. The week
concluded with a lovely dinner (Buffalo
Short Ribs etc.) where trophies and medals were awarded, great jokes were told,
many songs sung and much good cheer by
everyone. Special thanks to Bill Williams
for his tireless efforts as our trip chair.

R to L: Cecilia Pugh, Chris Morris, Jean Clark.
In accordance with a recent tradition,
the ALL Garden Club enjoyed lunch
at Macaroni Grill in Los Alamitos on
February 15. Having declared ourselves
“Divas”, we all donned our jeweled
coronets and/or fashionable fascinators
(Lyn Senske provided one to anyone who
had left home without it) and enjoyed the
food, company, and ambiance in a regal
manner.

president of the California Garden Club
and owner of Garden Designs, who spoke
on all things “garden”. Annie is an expert
horticulturists and always has something
new and exciting to share with us; this
time was no exception. Most of us went
away with some really wonderful ideas
for our own home gardens. As always, a
lovely lunch at the HHYC followed the
presentation.
The April excursion set for Tuesday,
April 17, will be a visit to South Orange
County and the home and gardens of
Helen Modjeska. Tucked away amidst a
live oak grove on the banks of Santiago
Creek in Modjeska Canyon lies the
century-old home of world renowned
actress Madame Helena Modjeska.
Named for the grounds’ resemblance to
the Forest of Arden in the Shakespearean
play, “As You Like It,” Arden is designated
a National Historic Landmark. Docent
led tours of the historic house and
gardens are currently offered four times a
month, by advance reservation only. This
walking tour designed for adults will take
us through the years Madame Modjeska
resided in her canyon home, and along
the rock lined pathways of what she so
fondly called the Forest of Arden. We
thank one of our members, Toni Aquino,
who set up the planned excursion and
lunch at a nearby restaurant!
The May meeting, our final one
for the 2011-2012 season, will be an
installation luncheon at Shenandoah
Arbor Restaurant. The final meeting
gives us a chance to celebrate the
members who helped make the previous
year a fun-filled and rewarding year of
6
new information and experiences. We
also thank in advance members who have
volunteered to work towards making the
2012-2013 season just as rewarding and
fun-filled.
As usual, we extend a warm invitation
to any who would like to join us in these
kinds of activities, or might just like to
visit once to check us out. Sally Cohen is
membership chair; she can be reached at

Huntington Harbour Art Association
by Jackie Dvorman
Pat McKenna, Marsha Hendler and Joyce Johnson at Association meeting.
The exciting annual fine Art Show
of Huntington Harbour Art Association
held in the corner Gallery of the Central
Library was colorful and eventful.
Caroline Bell and her daughter Tracie
Hanson filled two complete panels with
their large scale figurative oil paintings.
T.J. Cooling filled two panels with her
mixed media renditions of rearing horses.
There were lilting water colors from 20
artists with Betty Viers taking first place
with her “Civil War In Central Park”
painting.
The gallery had a special section
for the collages made in the workshop
conducted by Betty Viers. There was also
a special display panel for the painted
quilt pieces from the recent workshop
lead by Barbara Thorne. A champagne
awards reception was catered by Jerry of
Casablanca Catering who has done many
of our autumn cocktail parties.
A series of workshops are planned
for the spring. Kathleen Moore taught a

her home. Kathleen provided the materi-

als and taught the members to create one
of her own designs.
In April, Linda Sackin will teach
a Raw Edge Free Motion Quilting
Appliqué workshop.
Needles and Friends, a group who
enjoy meeting and working together,
meets on Monday from 1:00—3:30.
Anyone interest in knitting or other
needle projects is welcome. It’s lots of fun
and a great opportunity to get to know
other members. Call Karen Peoples at

Many of the paintings hanging
on the walls of recent gallery Art Show
were created in the painting Pals sessions
which are held every Tuesday at Seagate
Clubhouse from 10:00-2:00. Everyone
who comes says they are always inspired
to be with others who share their work
and their experiences with the brush and
paints. Drop in some Tuesday morning
and join us.

The year 2012 has started off with
a myriad of activities at the Huntington
Harbour Yacht Club, beginning on
January 4th with a super-informative
luncheon featuring guest speaker Kellee
Fritzal, Deputy Director of Economic
Development for Huntington Beach
who spoke in detail about all the new
development happening in the city. Then
it was the Super Bowl Party enjoyed by

11 was the date of the second annual
Wine Knot event, which is proving to be
one of the most popular events of the year.
More than 150 in attendance were treated
to fabulous wine tasting presented by no
less than 6 wineries and accompanied
by a fantastic array of food, imported

On Valentine’s Day, romance was
definitely in the air at HHYC as members
and their valentine enjoyed a delightful
and intimate dinner at the club decorated
with a “Lady and the Tramp” motif. The
following weekend it was off the to races
as fifty of us traveled by motor coach to
the famous Santa Anita racetrack. We
were treated to private seating at the
Turf Club and a behind the scenes tour
of the racetrack facility. In small groups
we were allowed to watch the races from
the winners circle. Next was the always
popular Academy Awards party and
dinner where members enjoyed watching
the event on the big screen TV and
competing among themselves to see who
could pick the greatest number of Oscar
Winners. This year it was a tie between
Richard Begin and Anita Osgood both of
whom proved they had their finger on the
pulse of the movie industry.
If you live in the area, love boating or
just plain want to have fun, you need to
become an HHYC member. We welcome
inquiries about membership and would
be happy to introduce you to the Yacht
Club as our guest at one of our Sunday
brunches our Friday night mixers and
provide you with more information.

and labs. Shelled space, with the capacity
of additional beds, will be built out in
phases through the year 2020 based on
community need.
The annual Casino Carnivale gala
was held at the Hilton Costa Mesa
on March 2nd. Six guilds, including
Little Mermaids, were responsible for
organizing the event. The evening started
with an open bar for wine tasting and
passed hors d’oeuvres. The main course
was a choice of sea bass or beef and wine
was also served with dinner, topping off
the meal with two decadent chocolate
desserts. There was dancing, a photo
booth, Minute-to-Win-it games, Casino
tables and games, Balloon Pop with
valuable gift card prizes, and a Wine Wall
filled with over 100 bottles of wine valued
at a minimum of $25 per bottle, and
dancing continued on until the end of the
evening. A memorable time was had by all
who attended .

La Traviata (Guilds of Segerstrom Center for the Arts)
by Lorraine Garafalo
L to R: Sheila Gregory, Jackie Demos, Art Doble, Dean Oliver, Barbara Thomas, Mary Busche, Betty Lou Evans, Angela Hartfelder, Jim Walton, Mim Strickler
and Bett Walton.
La Traviata members have been
having fun going to theatrical events.
Mary Busche organized – first, a trip to
the Segerstrom Center for the Arts to see
“Come Fly Away” and then, an evening at
the Rose Center Theater (in Westminster)
to see Tim Nelson’s production of “42nd
Street.
“Come Fly Away” featured Twyla
Tharp’s choreography set to Frank
Sinatra music – played by a live big band.
Fourteen dancers danced their hearts
out to the beat of romantic classics from
“Stardust” to “New York, New York”.
The great dancing and music of this show
thrilled everyone. “42nd Street” featured
a very talented young cast that performed
excitingly high-energy dance numbers.
They were augmented by a cast that
included more experienced performers
- such as Mary Murphy Nelson – who
sang, with authority, some of great tunes
in this show. After the performance,
Mary Busche graciously invited everyone
to her home for refreshments.
The Center will be featuring ballet
performances, jazz and a new musical.
We’re lucky to have such high caliber
artistic performances available to us.
We will also continue to support the
wonderful local theatrical performances.

New Years Eve Party
On a cold and foggy New Year’s eve,
one hundred members and guests rang in
the New Year in SeaGate Yacht Club style
at the festively decorated clubhouse. From
8:30 to 12:30, celebrants snacked on
appetizers and desserts, imbibed on Rob’s
full open bar, enjoyed a tasty coffee bar
with all of the trappings and cozied up to
the lit fire place. And, of course, it would
not be a SeaGate New Year’s without lots
and lots of spirited dancing – which we
did to the great music provided by DJ
Alex Espinosa of Extreme DJ.
To ensure that no one missed out on
ringing in the New Year no matter when
they came or left, we counted it down for
each of the U.S. time zones. Many staff
commodores and board members were
in attendance. Thanks to all who made
it another fantastic evening with great
friends..
Super Bowl
Great weather, our burgee flying high
and, as always, the super SeaGate members and guests (over 60 of them), met at
the Sea Gate Club house for Super Bowl
Forty-six. Thanks to those who brought
the delicious appetizers and desserts that
were enjoyed by everyone. The freshly
made crepes were a standout. Thanks to
Sandy Meier for her “Super Bowl Chili”
and to Maryann Boryszewski for her
“Texas Hot Chili”.
Bob McCormick supplied our Super
Bowl Pool chart. John & Maryann
Boryszewski took charge and ran the
pool. The winners were: Jean Worden
first & second quarters, Sue Westover
14
Giali third quarter, Bob Courtway fourth
quarter & game final. Thank you John &
Maryann.
A big thanks to Jean Worden for the
“Door Prize Table”. We had 20 happy
winners who could pick their own prize.
Jean also made the flyers and sent them
out. Tom Worden compiled & graded the
Foot Ball Quiz. Our commodore Dale
Giali won with an amazing 80% correct.
(Smart phone or smart commodore? Dale
is not saying.) Thanks Tom. Thanks to
Sandy Meier for taking the reservations
and greeting everyone at the door with a
smile and a door prize ticket.

Amigos de Bolsa Chica - The Railing Wall
by Dave Carlberg
Twenty years ago this last January,
the Amigos de Bolsa Chica dedicated
their spectacular “Railing Wall”, an
oversize mural depicting the Bolsa Chica
Wetland and its wildlife. The mural
was painted on a wall adjacent to the
Amigos’ office on McFadden Avenue in
Huntington Beach in 1992. The mural
got its name from the mural’s exquisite
image of a clapper rail, an endangered
bird that once nested in Bolsa Chica.
Noted for her paintings of birds and
wetlands, the Amigos approached Sunset
Beach artist and author Neill Ketchum
with the idea of painting a small sign to
direct visitors to the Amigos’ office that
was in a hidden corner of a parking lot.
Once Ketchum saw the large, smooth
concrete wall on which she was asked to
paint a mere directional sign, she knew

her destiny. As a long-time member of
the Amigos, Ketchum was fully aware of
the key role the organization had played
in preventing the Bolsa Chica Wetland
from becoming another Marina del Rey
and wanted to reward the organization
in some way. Inspired by an illustration
in her children’s book “Clapper Rail: The
Secret Bird of the Marsh”, she designed a
mural that would cover nearly the entire
two-story wall.
It took seven weeks to complete the
18 foot by 36 foot mural. Tall ladders and
scaffolding were needed to work on the
upper reaches of the painting. Ketchum
was aided by 15 professional and amateur
artists, including distinguished wildlife
artists Thomas Anderson and Robert
Reichert. Ketchum said that the mural
was the third one she had done, but the
first one with other artists. The difficult
part was to find a way to coordinate the
various styles and skills of her assistants.
Because of the large size of the images,
Ketchum had to bring in biology experts
to aid in getting the details of the plants
and animals right.
An inscription at the bottom of the
mural reads, “To the Amigos de Bolsa
Chica, the best friend a wetlands ever
had”.
The mural can be seen behind
the office building at 5811 McFadden
Avenue, at the corner of Assembly Lane,
Huntington Beach.
Bolsa Chica Land Trust - Bolsa Chica Jr. Stewards 2012 Season
by Mark Hay
The Bolsa Chica Land Trust has an
outdoor program for all children from
ages of 5-14. Any child interested in
getting their hands dirty and helping
restore the native habitat at Bolsa Chica
should join us.
A Junior Steward is a boy or girl
between the ages of 5-14 who has
attended 4 or more BCLT Stewardship
Days in the year. In 2011 we added
10 new Junior Stewards to our ranks.
In addition, we hosted over 100 kids,
parents, and grandparents at Stewardship
Days through the year.
In 2012, the Junior Stewards will
continue to host families at BCLT
Stewardship Days and help kids, parents,
and grandparents plant native plants
and learn more about our local native
ecosystems at the Bolsa Chica!

Members are welcomed as is anyone
interested in joining. As I said in our
January Newsletter, The Christmas

Tree Wonderland was a big success and
we did give a donation of $18,500 to
Orangewood Children’s Center.
Thursday 23rd it was Prime Rib
night at Malarky’s and we had about 40+

50/50 tickets. The winner went home with
$160.00 extra dollars in their pocket. By
the way, Doug Brown, Joyce’s son, prints

Huntington Harbour Philharmonic Committee
by Joanne Fernbach
Accepting the check for $85,000 are (on the left) Sandra Potter, Treasurer
and (center) Karen Wolff, President. Between them, Cruise of Lights® co-chairs
Karen Ridout and Kim Weddon, together with Lyn Senske and Linda Axel,
HHPC Co-Chairmen (far right) were proud to make the presentation.
No sooner has the dust settled
around the Cruise of Lights® and Boat
Parade activities than HHPC is gearing
up for putting those hard-earned fund
raising dollars to good use!
THE RESULTS ARE IN…
Over 10,000 tickets were sold and the
customers that cruised with us were oohing and aahing over the wonderful lights
that reflected in the waters of Huntington
Harbour. That means we were able to
contribute $85,000 to the Philharmonic
Society of Orange County to support
our school music education programs.
Thank you again to all the homeowners,
both on-water and off-water, for taking
the extra time to decorate and give our
community that special punch for the
holidays. Hats off to Kim Weddon and
Karen Ridout, co-chairs of the Cruise;
additional kudos to Lisa Mulvania and
Suzanne Russell, co-chairs of the Boat
Parade; and to the Ways and Means go-to
woman, Lolly McHardy. These women
and their committees spent thousands
of hours coordinating the insurance and
city permits, our volunteers, the boats,
the captains, the narrators, the judges that
made this year so successful!
You may ask…Why do you spend so
many hours putting on these two events?
The answer is simple to our members, but
to our Harbour community it may not
be so well-known. So to give you a little
insight, in February and March you’ll see
the Music Mobile van in the Harbour,
driven by our members easily identified
in their familiar white pants and blue
shirts. These docents, who have had
special training, are taking music to the
fourth grade classes in our local schools,
giving a presentation and demonstration
of the instruments which they will see
as in a symphony orchestra when they
are fifth graders. The 45-minute lesson
The committee is proud of the coverage received in the Winter Harbour Light
magazine. (L to R) Lillian Wood, Lolly McHardy, Valerie Ingham (office
manager), Linda Axel, Kathy Liddle, Donna Shaff er, Mim Strickler, Pam
Myers, Kim Weddon, Karen Ridout, and Lyn Senske.
includes actual instruments and their
placement in the orchestra as well as an
opportunity for actual hands-on time
for each student. Over the years we have
received enthusiastic feedback from the
students and grateful comments from the
teachers! As you know, music education
has been cut from many school programs
so we are filling a much needed hole in
the curriculum. The instruments and
van maintenance costs are covered by the
funds; we do our part for the love of it!
WHAT ELSE?
Another thing we love is ushering at
the ‘age-appropriate’ concert programs in
the Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert
Hall and in several other large venues
in Orange County. For this we join
members from 22 other Philharmonic
Committees in OC…it’s a really big
show! Co-sponsored by Disneyland
and its 15-piece band, the second grade
concerts are a basic introduction to brass,
woodwind, and percussion instruments.
For fifth graders there’s the more comprehensive performance with orchestral
music and classical dance presented by
the Orange County Youth Symphony
Orchestra and Orange County Ballet
Company! Can you imagine what second
or fifth graders think when they walk
through the doors of that concert hall
and then hear really incredible music
performed by other young people? Can
you imagine how it warms our hearts to
be able to bring music to almost a quarter
of a million children?
Like the holiday Cruise and Boat
Parade, in the spring we also have coordinators for Music Mobile presenters and
second and fifth grade concerts ushers.
Our ever-so-efficient chairmen were
Sharon Young and Elise Masseling for
the music mobile; Terri Feterik handled
everything except the carpools for the
20
concert ushering! Can you imagine
scheduling over a hundred women to fill a
variety of positions in numerous locations
and schools in Orange County? That’s
exactly what they did!
WHAT’S NEXT?
A really big celebration, that’s what!
It’s our 50th Anniversary. That’s right…
we’ve been putting on the Boat Parade
and Cruise for FIFTY years and we will
be celebrating this year! Our Grand
Marshal is announced at a special event
every March and shortly thereafter we will
know the theme for the Boat Parade and
home decorating contest. As soon as that
is determined we will send each Harbour
resident a letter outlining the details and
how you can participate. Everything
about this coming year will have a special
sparkle--all our members are looking
forward to this singular celebration. We
hope you’ll catch the enthusiasm!
INTERESTED?
If you would like to learn more
about our activities and get to know likeminded members of this community at
the same time, please read on. The reports
from each of the five groups that comprise
our Committee are on the following pages
and you are invited to join any of them
at a meeting or social event! You might
even want to join us and usher at one of
the concerts; it’s such a special experience!
Consider this your personal invitation.
Call 714/840-7542 for more information,
or contact one of the groups.
And last, but not least… because the
editing gremlins crept between the lines of
our February article a very special donor
was left off the lists. So, here we extend
our gratitude to Pipeline Construction
and Jim and Sydney Doulames for being
underwriters of both the Boat Parade and
Cruise of Lights®.

The Valentine Party. Love was in the “Sea Air”, at the Beautiful Waterfront home of Linda and Bob Axel.
This romantic night was beautiful. Lovely couples strolled in the clean

of Trinidad members? It made us think
of the one we love. It was truly a night

Peters Landing Farmers’ Market
by Chris MacDonald, Writer/Photographer, Huntington Beach Ambassador
Huntington Beach Mayor Don Hansen with Huntington Beach Peters Landing Local Harvest Farmers Market Coordinator Lee Ostendorf.
If you haven’t been to the new
Peters Landing Local Harvest Farmers
Market in Huntington Beach, stop by
and enjoy the Petting Zoo, Pony Rides,
award-winning Farm Fresh Fruits, a
variety of Crafts, ranging from wooden
hand-carved belts to handmade soaps
and Furniture; Delicious Foods, made
before your eyes, including Oven-Baked
Pizza, Chicken Kabob and Crab Cakes
to Hawaiian Dishes and Kettle Corn.
There’s even Fresh Flowers, Face Painting,
Caricatures and Live Entertainment,
ranging from Surf, Folk and Country to
Classical and Rock.
Started in April, 2011, this market is
open every Saturday rain or shine from
9am to 2pm in the parking lot at 16400
Pacific Coast Highway. Some Harbour
residents arrive by boat and dock at the
28
Marina. The event is also Pet Friendly
(except in the food areas). You can even
get tasty treats for your canine. It’s fun
to stroll through the 60 vendors and try
samples of nuts, fruits, cookies, sauces
and more. It’s neat to find out where your
apples, vegetables, free range eggs and
honey actually come from and when they
were harvested.
Try on Rings, Jewelry and Scarves;
Smell the Scent of Candles, Taste Dutch
Cookies, See local Paintings of the nearby
buildings along PCH, including the
Water Tower, Mothers, Harpoon Harry’s,
Captain Jacks, Don the Beachcomber,
King Neptunes, Harbour House Cafe,
Woody’s Diner and Turks.
The “festival” is more than just a
market, it’s a community gathering where
friends meet every week. Huntington
Beach Mayor Don Hansen loves the
venue and encourages all residents to
come and enjoy this unique location.
Some locals, who visit several regional
markets, say Huntington Harbour’s
Peters’ Landing has the best vegetables.
The reasonable prices and product freshness speak for themselves. Lee Ostendorf,
who has coordinated markets for years,
said the Peter’s Landing location makes
this one unique in setting and fun for
the whole family. “There’s something for
everyone to do here, so come on down
and have a blast,” she said. “The vendors
have as much fun as the shoppers.”

HHPOA
by Dorothy Ralphs
The Board Members of the
Huntington Harbour Property Owners
Association continue to meet to oversee
various projects, answer questions from
residents and support the maintenance of
landscaping on the corner of Algonquin,
Davenport and Courtney Lane.
If you live on the Mainland,
Davenport, Humboldt or Admiralty
Islands you still fall under the HHPOA
jurisdiction for approval of changes made
to your residence or landscaping. If you
are remodeling or making major changes
you can get a set of CC &R’s from our
office for only $10 and complete the
approval form to be submitted to the
HHPOA. We can be reached at 714840-7877 or by going to our Website at
myhhpoa.gov.
We were very disappointed that so
few homeowners attended our Annual
Meeting held in January. This is such a
special unique community it is surprising
how few people take an interest in
what is going and what happens here in
Huntington Harbour.
We would like to urge you all to
continue to pay your dues of a mere $85
per year in order to support our activities.
Without the dues we would have to
let things go and you would all most
certainly notice the difference after a few
months.
There is an important Article in this
magazine regarding State Assessments on
Docks on the Main Channel. Mr. Frank
Singer is leading the opposition to these
charges and you can contact him for
further information.
Great news for the Edinger Project.
The City of Huntington Beach received
a grant of $192,000 to complete the bike
path along Edinger Avenue, behind the
recently completed landscaping.
The City will include the shortfall in
the cost of the bike path in their 2012 -13
budget so it will be completed sometime
next year.
The good news is that this will free
up regular parking along Edinger Avenue
and make a big difference to the parking
situation for future Boat Parade Party
attendees!
THE NEXT BOARD MEETING
WILL BE HELD TUESDAY MAY 15.
All Meetings are held in the HHPOA
Offices located at 16899 Algonquin
Street, Suite “C”. Contact us anytime by
e-mail at hhpoa@verizon.net.
A big “thank you” to Star Real
Estate’s Dean Zitco for continually

UnCorked on Tisbury
by CeCe Lorthioir
L to R: Greg Cordrey, Pascal Lorthioir, Ron Jones, Michael Saveliev, Mike
Gallipeo
Neighbors on Tisbury Circle,
Humboldt Island, recently started a
neighborhood wine club. Life today is
very busy and it’s hard to find a way to
connect with our neighbors. We come
and go between work and taking kids
to school, with only a brief wave hello to
the people who live around us. Creating
a neighborhood wine club is a fun way to
get to know each other. And who knows,
our new best friend may be right next
door to us! The wine club’s debut wine
L to R: Kathie Saveliev, Mona Jones, Sylvia Hansink, CeCe Lorthioir, Margie
Bogart, Sloan Gallipeo
tasting was held on March 3rd at the
home of Mr. & Mrs. Pascal Lorthioir.
The club invited wine expert, Anna
Ortiz, PhD, to do a class on the basics
of wine tasting and food pairing. The
group tasted 8 flights of boutique wines,
all from several California wine regions
- Napa, Carneros, Lodi, Paso Robles,
Russian River, and even Tuolumne
County. Also invited was Debby Brooks,
owner of We Olive in Costa Mesa’s OC
Mart Mix, who brought along samplings
29
of their California olive oils, which were
paired with the wines tasted. UnCorked
on Tisbury plans to have wine tastings
with different themes every two months.
Forging friendships with our neighbors
is an important thing to do. The wine
club gives us reason to get together on a
regular basis and help us to create lasting
friendship with the very people who live
around us. If you want info on how to
get your neighborhood wine club started,
contact CeCe at cece12@earthlink.net.

USC Huntington Beach Alumni Association
by Diane Andrews, President & George Demos, Past President
From Diane Andrew, President:
We are doing a Day of Service on
Saturday, March 24, in Seal Beach, 9
am-12 noon, at the Seal Beach Pier area
on the sandy beach. It will be a beach
cleanup, a food drive, and we will be
associated with a health fair being held
there the same day. This day of service is a
nationwide event, involving USC Alumni
all over the country and overseas, giving
community service.
Two other alumni groups will be
partnering with us for this event, Trojan
Guild of Orange County and the USC
Alumni Club of Long Beach.
The canned food drive involves the
Food Finders Organization and you and
your friends can drop off canned food
at the Seal Beach Pier. Just look for our
booth.
The food will benefit 2 places in
Los Alamitos: Casa Youth Shelter for
runaway or troubled teens. They are given
counseling and shelter. The second place
is Precious Life, which gives pregnant
women food and shelter.
Fight on!
Alumni Jan Arakelian and George Demos discussing football with Devon Kennard (USC first string senior
defensive end). After listening to Coach Ed Orgeron, Defensive Coordinator, who discussed this year’s
recruiting celebration-an outstanding group of new players. He shared films of each player from last year.
It looks extremely good for USC football!

Sea Isle Garden Club
by Caron Mount and Cindy Allen
Members at the Jan. meeting: Carolyn Lloyd, Carolyn Platt, Cindy Allen, Lyn Senske, Lucille Mascoli, President Mary Ann Brinket, Susan LaPittus, Terry
Hayden, Loel Jones, Anne White, Jackie Neil, Caron Mount and Cathy Kelly.
The Sea Isle Garden Club has
received wonderful news from the City
of Huntington Beach: funds for completing the Edinger bike path have become
available. Years of fundraising efforts
from our formidable garden club, led to
the City of Huntington Beach accepting
$166,000 from our community members’ contributions to help complete the
Edinger Parkway. In 2010, the City finished the landscape improvements along
the north side of Edinger Avenue west of
Bolsa Chica Street. Due to funding constraints the pedestrian/bicycle path was
not able to be completed as envisioned
as part of the project. However, The City
Manager’s Weekly Report of January
23, 2012 announced that “Luckily, in
October of 2011, OCTA informed the
City that a State grant had been awarded
in the amount of approximately $192,000
which will cover 75% of the construction
cost to complete the path. It is anticipated
that City will provide the necessary 25%
match and will budget this project in
the FY 2012-13 Capital Improvement
Program.”
This is an exciting time for the Sea
Isle Garden Club! If you are interested
in joining our club, please call our Vice
President of Membership, Anne Blayden
at 714-840-7889.
Our February 8th meeting was at the
lovely waterfront home of Susan La Pittus.
Sea Isle Garden Club members enjoyed
a lively lecture by Morton La Pittus, a
veterinarian and Bonsai aficionado, who
instructed us on which plants are toxic to
pets, and gave a demonstration of transplanting bonsais. He distributed a flyer
identifying some of the plants which are
poisonous to cats and dogs, along with the
symptoms that ingesting the vegetation
can cause. It was a very enlightening and
entertaining presentation.
At our March 14th meeting, Sea
Isle Garden Club members met briefly at
the SeaGate Clubhouse, then enjoyed an
excursion to the Norma Gibbs Monarch
Butterfly Park. Leslie Gilson, who took
on the Restoration of the Park, gave us an
informative tour. Afterward, we enjoyed
Lunch at the Meadowlark Golf Course.
TASTE
OF
Sea Isle Garden Club members
will be having our next meeting at the
SeaGate Clubhouse on April 11th. Caron
Mount will be displaying her original
photographs of our Edinger Project and
plants. Carolyn Platt will present a recap
of the identification of the plants growing
on our Edinger Parkway.
Our annual Installation of Officers
Luncheon will be held on May 9th at the
Bahia Corinthian Yacht Club.
