APRIL 2014 BAPTISM: What is it and for whom
APRIL 2014
VOL.26 NO. 4
BAPTISM: What is it and for whom was it given to us?
Baptism is the Word of God made visible. It sets forth the grace of God in Jesus Christ and affirms that
believers and their children are heirs of the covenant of grace. The Sacrament is a means of testifying to and
receiving the reality of God’s grace, and a means by which all faithful members of the church publicly show
their own faith and trust in God. As the baptism of Jesus anticipated the whole course of his obedience, so the
meaning of one’s own baptism becomes clear only through the subsequent course of one’s life as one
practices what it means to be the Lord’s.
Baptism is a celebration and a proclamation of the faith of a new believer. The Baptism of infants is also a
celebration and a proclamation of God’s love and God’s claim on the life of the children of believers. Our
congregation is enriched by the administration of Baptism both to infants and to consenting believers upon
public confession of faith. Baptism signals our membership in the universal church and since its reality does
not depend on the tradition or the form in which it was administered, it is administered only once to each
person.
Baptism is an act of the whole church and a sign of entrance into the church; therefore, it is regularly
administered in the presence of the worshipping congregation. Since the Sacrament of Baptism is the Word
made visible, it cannot be separated from the reading and proclamation of the Word. Baptism is therefore
ordinarily administered in the setting of the church’s regular worship service.
Christian parents present their infant children for Baptism as a sign and seal of God’s promise to them as
heirs of the covenant. In presenting a child for Baptism, parents affirm in public their duty to bring up the child
to love and serve God. The congregation, too, promises to surround the child with their love and concern in
Christ, that the child may continue in the community of the church, confess Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord,
and live in God’s eternal kingdom.
The parents or those persons rightly exercising parental authority, if members of the congregation, have
the right to present their infant children for Baptism. The session may also grant permission to Christian
parents or guardians who are not members of the congregation to present infants for Baptism provided they
are members in good standing in some other congregation of believers. If Christian parents are seeking to
present their infant for Baptism and they are not presently members of any congregation, then ordinarily the
first order of business will be to discuss establishing regular participation with and membership in this or some
other local congregation.
The session will instruct and discuss with the parents the significance of what God is doing in this act and the
responsibility it lays upon them. It is our belief that Baptism is not to be practiced out of fear for the condition
of the soul of an un-baptized child. The ultimate and long-term aim of Baptism includes a personal confession
of faith and a commitment to belong to the Lord on the part of the person who is baptized. The Baptism of
infants places special responsibilities on parents and on the congregation for education and witness in the life
of the church. The Baptism of infants should be pursued in a timely manner, neither with undue haste nor
with undue delay.

BAPTISM -Continued
In the administration of the Sacrament of Baptism, the parents will be asked the following or similar
questions:
Do you believe in God the Father Almighty,
And in Jesus Christ his Son, our Savior,
And in the Holy Spirit of God who lives in us and gives us life? Do You?
Do you gratefully proclaim that Jesus is your savior,
And do you acknowledge Jesus as your Lord? Do You?
Will you commit yourself to obey his commands, with God’s help. Will You?
Will you renounce evil, its power to hold you captive, and its influence in your life? Will You?
Do you acknowledge your complete inability to do anything eternally good in your own strength, and
your utter reliance on the Grace, Power, and Wisdom of God for every success? Do you?
Will you, by your example, teach your child to actively participate in the worship and fellowship of
the church,
And, will you also, by your own example, teach him (or her) to apply his (or her) gifts, talents,
resources, and strength, to the fulfillment of the Church’s mission? Will You?
The members of the congregation are also asked to make a commitment, in the name of the whole Church
of Christ, to the Christian nurture of the child; to the end that in due time she (he) may confess faith in Jesus
Christ as Lord and Savior. It is because of this solemn commitment that our congregation holds strongly to the
requirement that the parents of a child presented for Baptism must be members in good standing of our
congregation or of another congregation of believers. There must be an existing connection between the
parents and the Church of Christ if we are to believe that we will be able to fulfill our commitment to the child
and his (her) family.
In the celebration of the Sacrament of Baptism, we are all enriched. New lives enter the household of God
and the care of the congregation. We are all reminded of our own Baptism and the grace of God that has been
poured into our lives and we give glory to our God, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit in whose name we
are all Baptized.
Blessings,
Pastor Tom Willcox

NEIGHBORHOOD ASSISTANCE
PROGRAM
(Emergency Assistance to Area Residents)
In 1994, ten percent of a sizeable bequest was
deposited in a special checking account for use
by the pastor and church secretary to proved
emergency assistance and travelers’ assistance
to individuals and families in need. This served a
large number of families that were streaming
into Branson following the 60 Minutes
statement about the earning potential here
being "$6 million in 6 months." But this was
expended within the first 12 months.
For the next several years, gifts designated by
church members to Local Mission or the Pastor’s
Discretionary Fund provided limited funds for
this type of outreach. Occasionally, special
requests were made to the Deacons.
Such requests have always been met with
generosity. During this time the responsibility
for assessment and distribution of funds
evolved to the Administrative Assistant rather
than the Pastor.
Through the dedicated work of some FPC
members on the Mission/ Evangelism team, a
Neighborhood Assistance Program was
established and an annual amount set aside for
distribution. For a time this was administered by
members of the team but as team personnel
changed, assessment and distribution returned
to the Administrative Assistant.
Expenditures include, but have not been
limited to:
Rent assistance (weekly rentals and partial
monthly amounts)
Nightly rentals (to temporarily keep people off
the streets or out of their cars when the
weather is unfit)
Deposit assistance (either security/cleaning
deposits for rentals or most often utility
companies)
Energy assistance (electric, propane or water
Groceries (Apple Market was the last of the grocery stores that didn’t sell
alcohol. It's a little more complicated now.)
Prescriptions (never pain meds)
Clothing (Usually replacing shoes with completely worn out soles but also
black pants, white shirts & shoes with non-slip soles for work )
Phone Cards (If you don’t have access to a working phone prospective
employers can’t call you.)
Gasoline (Primarily for work or to look for work and those living in their car;
but sometimes to get people out of town. They are stranded here and it’s a
better investment to help them get where they need to be than to maintain
them in Branson.)
Bus Tickets (It usually costs less to send someone back to their family or
support group than to try to help them stay in town until someone can come
and get them or send them the necessary funds.)
Miscellaneous Items – (tents, space heaters, blankets, bras, formula, diapers,
child car seats, etc.)
Congregational Needs -‐ (Emergency needs of those in our church family are
sometimes funded by Neighborhood Assistance and the Deacon's Fund.)
Though our first concern is the welfare of children, it is not uncommon for
people to ‘borrow’ children to carry into church offices when asking for
assistance complicating the assessment process. We have helped indigent
men and women, families that have loaded up everything they own and
moved to Branson with no money, no promise of a job or a place to live,
drunks, dope heads, abused women, pregnant teens, the disabled, the ill, the
broken-‐hearted, people fresh out of jail or prison, and some folks just down
on their luck with no one to turn to. It takes time: time to listen, to look in
their eyes, and to try and identify the real problem and what First Presbyterian
Church can do to help and not enable.
Sometimes we give or get handshakes & hugs. Sometimes we stay late or
arrive early so someone who has been living in a car, in the woods or under a
bridge can take a shower and get cleaned up for work. We sort through the
CAM basket, take Benedryl and Tylenol our of our purses and make
sandwiches and pack up leftovers from the kitchen. We give rides to motels
and the bus station in Hollister; meet people at Casey’s for gas and walk
Experiencing the Father's Heart
through the grocery store to help someone buy
a few items. We give advice and make referrals.
It could be said that it is as much a ministry as a
mission.
Your Mission Team earmarks $2,500 annually to
Neighborhood Assistance adding more funds
periodically for specific projects and at year‐end. Presbyterian Women has also made
significant contributions to the program; but the
bulk of this program is funded by special gifts
from the congregation.

RESURRECTION SUNDAY
2014
April 20
Be watching for information on this year’s
Resurrection celebration. Easter Sunday is April
20th and plans are underway for the wonderful
event. We will be looking for some empty nesters
and youth to help us out during the 8:30 to 10:00
time with the children’s activities. Each of the
stations will focus and celebrate the different
events of Holy Week. There will be a sign up sheet
in the fireside room in March. You can check out
the program by going to
“Our (Messianic) Passover celebration is really
as much for Christians as it is for Jews,” Rabbi Storch
explains, adding that Messianic Jews are Believers in
Yeshua (Hebrew for Jesus). “We believe that the
Passover Lamb of Exodus points to Yeshua who was
crucified on Passover as the Lamb of God.”
Storch founded The Tabernacle 12 years ago.
His congregation meets in Branson and includes Jewish
believers and Christians interested in learning about the
Hebrew roots of Christianity.
“A Messianic Passover Seder is really a
rehearsal for the Marriage Supper of the Lamb, as
prophesied in the Bible,” Storch explained. “Essentially,
it is what the church knows as communion, but in much
greater detail. It is something that every Christian
should experience.”
The Tabernacle holds Erev Shabbat (Sabbath
eve) services every Friday at 7:30 p and Shabbat
(Sabbath) services at 11:00 a every Saturday. The
