Bread for the World is a collective Christian
voice urging our nation’s decision makers to
end hunger at home and abroad. By changing
policies, programs and conditions that allow
hunger and poverty to persist, we provide help
and opportunity far beyond the communities
where we live.

Throughout the year, we saw major attacks and proposals to cut funding
for programs vital to hungry and poor people. Bread for the World members
and others of faith voiced their opposition—and overall, we prevailed. Our
successes during 2011 are victories for hungry people in the United States and
around the world.
Thousands of letters to Congress from Bread for the World members last
spring helped to ensure adequate funding for international aid—and some
progress toward reform. The momentum of the 2010 World Food Prize
helped Bread for the World achieve unprecedented media exposure, which
strengthened our message and reach. Despite the surge in poverty brought
about by the recession, SNAP (formerly food stamps), unemployment
insurance, and tax credits for low-income workers are keeping hunger at bay
for millions of American families. This is thanks in no small part to Bread for
the World’s powerful united witness.
Praise God for answered prayers; our united voices created a circle of
protection around time-tested, cost-effective programs that address the causes
of hunger. We are fortunate to live in a powerful democracy with worldwide
impact. Every member of Bread for the World participates in God’s liberation
of hungry people. May God bless you as you continue to press our leaders to
end hunger.
2011 Victories
A Circle of Protection
Throughout 2011, we saw major attacks and proposals to drastically cut
programs for hungry and poor people. Beginning with February’s H.R. 1—the
House Republicans’ bill to fund the federal government for the remainder
of the fiscal year—we faced legislation that threatened our country’s ability
to combat hunger and poverty. In response, Bread for the World members
and our allies rallied. More than 60 national church leaders and 8,000 other
people signed a statement, urging Congress to form a circle of protection
around programs vital to hungry people. When the year ended and the FY
2012 appropriations bills were passed, hunger- and poverty-focused relief
programs were relatively unscathed. Against immense odds, Bread for the
World achieved one of the greatest victories in our history.

Foreign Aid
The opportunity to reform U.S. foreign
aid policies and programs last year
enabled us to help transform despair into
dignity. Our 2011 Offering of Letters drew
unprecedented participation from Bread
for the World congregations calling for
adequate funding and effective reform of
international aid. In October, Congressman
Ted Poe, a Republican from Texas,
introduced the Foreign Aid Transparency
and Accountability Act, which would
strengthen monitoring and evaluation and
make it easier to access information on U.S.
foreign assistance.
National Gathering
In June, more than 600 people came to
Washington, DC, for events in conjunction
with Bread for the World’s National
Gathering 2011 and our annual Lobby Day.
Over four days, participants worshipped
together, heard from experts, and organized
to change the politics of hunger. In faceto-face meetings with their members of
Congress, they urged their senators and
representatives not to balance the federal
budget by cutting programs that benefit
hungry people in the United States and
abroad.

these efforts bore fruit as Congress

November 2011 saw the release of Bread for the World Institute’s 2012 Hunger
Report, Rebalancing Act: Updating U.S. Food and Farm Policies. The report makes the
case for protecting and improving nutrition programs in this country and food aid
internationally. The report also recommends ways for the federal government to
better respond to current and future challenges in agriculture and nutrition.
