THE
SCUTTLEBUTT
Jeanne Stafford, Commodore
Now this is how to start out
a month.! July 3rd gave us
fabulous fireworks right before
our eyes, and July 6th had us
going to Margaritaville. Victor,
Pam, Dale, Angie, Tommy &
Sylvia really know how to throw
back-to-back parties. Sorry I
missed going to “Margaritaville”
but I heard only great things
about the event. Thank you all
and everyone who made these parties so great.
Please check the flyers in this newsletter for
what Victor & Pam have in store for this month and
keep the following dates open: August 17th for the
Luau and Bill’s famous Pig, and August 25th for the
Charity Regatta Brunch. Both are on the calendar (pg.
7) and I’m hoping to see you all there.
Also opening in July was the “Navy Nook.” What
a great place to chat when spending time at the yacht
club. The glass window and bar counter are a great
place to sit and watch the boats going out and coming
in to the newly revamped marina. I know it took a lot
of hands on deck to get our Nook completed, so thank
you one and all.
August means I’m on the down side of my term
as Commodore and with that in mind, thoughts of
getting ready for the November General Meeting
come to mind. The nominating committee will be
looking for volunteers for the Board.
Anyone
interested in running for the Board or having questions
about what is takes to be on the Board, please feel
free to give me a call. I will be more than happy to
answer any questions.
Well that’s all I have for now. Hope to see you
all around the clubhouse.

Victor Padilla, Vice Commodore
Hello all,
Wow, did we have fun in
July. If you missed the two big
parties it’s your own fault!
Let’s start with the 3rd of July
BBQ and firework show right
in our own back yard of the
clubhouse. We had burgers
and hot dogs along with the
many scrumptious side dishes
that members brought. We
cooked for 103 members and guests. That has to
be the best ever for participation. (I couldn’t think
about using my grill at home for a week.) The
fireworks show started at 9 p.m. from the barge out
in Alamitos Bay. We sat in our chairs on the lawn
and had the best view on the bay. The spectacular
show lasted about 20 minutes.
Next up was the Margaritaville Party on July
6th. Member Dale West threw a birthday party for
his wife Angie and invited club members. Dale
brought in the Eric Stone Band for music and a
caterer, which served up tacos. I helped Tommy
Wheeler in the bar making margaritas and for a
while we couldn’t make them fast enough, even with
the great margarita blender we had which could
make 3 batches at a time. The dance floor (grass
area) was busy all night.
At this time I would like to thank all the members
who helped, with either set up or clean up. Our club
members are the best; they will ask, “What can I do
to help?”
Friday night potluck dinners are doing well due
to the nice warm weather. Come on down and join
the conversation and meet some new people!
In August we host the Luau on the 17th and the
Charity Regatta Brunch on the 25th. Please RSVP
to me at tangentvp@gmail.com. so we can make
sure to have enough food.
See you at the clubhouse.

change; the realist adjusts the sails.”

There will be no races hosted by
the Navy Yacht Club
this month, but in
September we’ll be
hosting the All Hands
Race and in October
the Annual Navy Day
Regatta. Go to our
website at
http://www.nyclb.com , click on
the racing tab for more
information, Notice of Race,
Course Charts and Sailing
Instructions for these upcoming
events.

Race Chairman

cake. Clean all fruit and let dry while cake is baking and cooling. After cake has
cooled, cut cake into 1 inch squares. 1st layer is raspberries, next layer the angel
cake, whipped cream then we have blueberries, angel food cake and whipped
cream to be topped off with strawberries.

If you think July’s social
events were the most fun
you’ve had at the Navy Yacht
Club, just look at August! We
have six scheduled events
during the month, starting with
the NYCLB hosting the
ASPBYC (Association of San
Pedro Bay Yacht Clubs)
monthly dinner meeting on
August 6 at 6:00 p. m.
Our annual American Legion Yacht Club cruise
out runs from August 9 through 11. Please review
the flyer on the next page. Cruise in or drive in to
ALYC but don’t miss the weekend. Contact Tony
Rietdyk about moorings and plans for each day’s
events, including the highly competitive bocce ball
contest.
Join our annual Luau, one of my favorite events,
on Saturday, August 17. We dance to a Hawaiian
band and feast on Bill Plumlee’s famous Roast Pig.
You’ll be treated to other island food on the menu
to round out the meal. How about a hula contest?
On Sunday, August 25, we host the annual
Charity Regatta Brunch with IOBG, the International
Organization of the Blue Gavel, a group of past
Commodores. As usual we’ll have our famous
omelet bar and other brunch specialties.
In September we begin our search for 2014’s
Flag Officers and Directors. I will chair the
nominating committee who will select the candidates
for the 2014 slate. I encourage you to consider
running for an office next year. If you are interested
or want more information, call or email me at 562
436-8883 or t.carbone2@verizon.net. Nominations
will be announced by the end of September, 2013.
Here’s looking to another great summer month
at the NYCLB.
Tamara Carbone
Jr. Staff Commodore
Gary Halliburton, Rear Commodore
Let’s all welcome James
and Tresha Marshall as new
club members. They own a
30’ Bayliner which they keep
on a trailer. James was in the
Coast Guard.
You have been reading
about the many activities
planned for the upcoming
months. We’ll need volunteers to help set up
these events as well as working during the
events or the clean up afterwards. Be sure to
contact Victor Padilla if you have a desire to help
out with one of these events.
Remember;
“Volunteering is generally considered an
altruistic activity, and is intended to promote
good or improve human quality of life, which in
return produces a feeling of self worth and
THE
SCUTTLEBUTT
respect, but no financial gain. Volunteering is
also famous for skill development, socialization
and fun.”
So far we have sixteen new members this
year! Let’s make an effort to seek out a new
face, introduce ourselves, and make these new
members feel welcome at our club.
Also, bring in your friends to become
members and join our fun and activities.
We have had some issues with members
bringing in their own liquor. We have decided
to make it a policy that you may bring wine and
pay a $5 corkage fee per bottle. Please do not
bring in beer or other liquor. If you have a
special request please make arrangements with
Victor when you RSVP to an event.
