Greenstones mining past
Greenstone has a long standing mining
history of small, high grade gold vein
deposits (14 past producing gold mines)
and is actively being explored by multiple
companies for additional gold wealth.
Lake Superior Provincial Park
Lake Superior Povincial was established in
1944 along the shores of Lake Superior just
south of Wawa. covering more than 160ha it is
one of the largest parks in Ontario.
Highway 11 starting in Beardmore where
the former Lietch mine siteis located on the
way to Poplar Point. Leitch was the highest
grade gold mine in Canada during its
operation. Northern Empire and Sand River
mines also operated around Beardmore.
It claims world class hiking and paddling,
camping and scenerey.
Agawa canyon, home to the Agawa rock
pictographs, which are sacred to the Ojibwe
peoples of the area.
Geraldton’s Hard Rock and Bankfield mines
were some of the largest gold producers in
the region in the 40’s and 50’s.
Remanants of old mine sites little the
area starting approximately 20km west of
Geraldton and ending at the head frame
pictures to the left which is located right on
highway 11 at the Geraldton turn off.
Camping Dates - Interior
May 6, 2016 - October 23, 2016
Today Greenstone gold is actively pursuing a potential open pit mine underneath the existing headframe
which will require moving of the highway and infrastucture.
