Thank You
for Your Generous

Welcome from Patricia Sklar, Tournament Chairman
I welcome each of you to ICAN’s first-ever
Northern California Golf Invitational at the
beautiful Napa Valley Country Club. It has been
a delight to chair this event with a first-rate
tournament committee, and I am ever-grateful
for the leadership-beyond-compare of each of my
fun and fabulous co-chairs, John Youngberg, Fred
Miller, and Liz Reeve ... along with the awesome
support of Mary Lou Hamilton, Phil Schlein, and
Jeff Veness. We are delighted to have as our Master
of Ceremonies Ira Smith, who is the Voice of Napa
Valley Sports for KVON and KVYN.
I am very proud to be associated with the unique and highly acclaimed
work of ICAN, the International Cancer Advocacy Network.
Founded in 1996, the International Cancer Advocacy Network’s mission is
to fight for the lives of Stage IV cancer patients, leaving no stone unturned
in their battle for life. ICAN provides patients with direct, case-specific
navigation as well as customized advocacy and research services on
treatment options, molecular profiling, and clinical trials. Profiled in
Newsweek and Pharmaceutical Executive, ICAN operates with the highest
standards of board governance.
Revenues from this Northern California Invitational will support the Dan
Mears Clinical Trials Program at ICAN as well as the Donald Cameron
Novel Therapeutics Program at ICAN, plus breast cancer, ovarian cancer,
and prostate cancer programs. We are proud that for each of the past
six years, 94% of every dollar raised by ICAN has supported our Patient
Program Services.
Three cheers to each of you for being part of ICAN’s California family,
and may our efforts all work toward turning cancer from a life-threatening
disease into a benign, chronic illness that takes not a single additional life.
With grateful thanks, and hoping you will include ICAN going forward in
your annual giving,
Patricia Sklar
Tournament Chairman

In view of cancer's one-of-a-kind nature, we proceed
patient-by-patient, cancer-by-cancer, subtype-by-subtype,
gene-by-gene, and protein-by-protein, which allows
ICAN's Personalized Medicine Cancer Case Navigation
Programs to zero in on targeted therapeutics and
promising treatment options within both approved drugs
and clinical trials pipelines.
At ICAN, we advocate using the paradigm of optimized
treatment protocol based on the patient's genetics and
specific molecular changes that have occurred in the
patient's cancer at the subcellular level. By "translating"
such cutting-edge diagnostics into concrete strategic
treatment options at each critical juncture, ICAN helps
patients ask the right questions of their medical teams,
and is often asked to explain answers given to them by
their physicians so that ultimate treatment decisions best
suit who they are and where they are, both medically
and geographically. At the patient's request, ICAN makes
referrals to world-class specialists and medical centers.
In an effort to empower the patient in his/her cancer
management, we often encourage the patient to request
that his/her medical team order critically important
diagnostic and prognostic testing. Exciting advances in
biomedical research are providing a new paradigm in
treatment, enabling patients to obtain a scientific basis for
how their tumor evolved, and how they might respond to
available therapeutic avenues--whether those treatment
regimens are FDA-approved, standard of care mainstays, or
whether those therapies are in the clinical trials arena.
If you would like to join our Leadership Council
or Friends of ICAN, California, please email
boardgovernance@askican.org, as we would
love to have your talents and volunteer efforts
working with us for ICAN!
Despite the plethora of oncology practices, medical
centers, laboratories, academia, clinical trials, biotechs
and pharmaceutical companies that ICAN deals with, we
remain beholden to no one except the patient.
With a small staff and more than 1100 volunteers in 30
areas of ICAN, covering 17 different time zones, we literally
work around the clock in terms of our team’s passionate
dedication to our patients. Every second, someone at ICAN
is researching, advocating, empowering, or explaining ...
all in an effort to extend lives with the highest possible
quality of life.
According to patients, ICAN is the only advocacy
organization that provides this kind of “in-the-trenches”
help to adult and pediatric cancer patients and their
families across the U.S. and around the world, 24/7/365.

ICAN’s Tournament Committee has enjoyed monthly meetings at
NVCC to plan this event.
Your generous support will benefit
ICAN’s Dan Mears Pancreatic Cancer Clinical Trials Program,
in honor of and in memory of nuclear engineer and entrepreneur,
Dan Mears of San Diego.
ICAN’s program salutes Dan’s heroic and proactive battle against
metastatic pancreatic cancer as well as the tireless advocacy and
support of his beloved wife, Susan Fielder Mears, and Dan’s daughter
Susan Mears Mitchell, husband Mick, and family.
Dan’s program focuses on pancreatic
cancer research under the direction
of the chairman of ICAN’s renowned
Scientific Advisory Council, G. Robert
Pettit, PhD, the discoverer of Auristatin
E (now licensed as MMAE), which is
one of the most exciting compounds
ever to achieve FDA approval.
Auristatin E is being energetically explored in solid tumor cancer
clinical trials by leading pharmaceutical companies across the globe.
The Mears Program also serves as a gateway to ICAN’s Remission
Coach project, which is disruptive technology (meaning one that
“shakes up” the industry) in the form of a comprehensive search system
connecting patients to clinical research.
®
Serving as a clearinghouse for world-class pancreatic cancer patient
advocacy, the Mears Program is working to foster a patient-centric
drug pipeline for academic, industry, and government researchers
in pancreatic cancer. Emphasizing cutting-edge molecular profiling
and tumor sequencing, ICAN positions pancreatic cancer patients to
achieve the most systematic and informed review possible of what is
driving their pancreatic tumor to proliferate and which targets could be
most promising in terms of novel therapies.
TOGETHER:
A BETTER WAY TO
FIGHT CANCER
THROUGH CLINICAL
RESEARCH.
Arizona Oncology is committed to advancing science
through clinical trials.
As a member of US Oncology Research, we provide patients access to one of
the nation’s largest cancer treatment and research networks in the country.
Through US Oncology Research, Arizona Oncology physicians have contributed
to the FDA-approval of 50 cancer therapies. We’re proud to bring more than
60 promising clinical trials to our community each year in order to find more
effective ways to treat cancer and expand treatment options for our patients.
At Arizona Oncology, we believe together is a better way to fight.

Your Support Tonight Will Benefit
The Donald Henry Cameron Novel Therapeutics Program
A self-made man, Donald Henry
Cameron lived his life with style and
grace. Above all, Don deeply loved
his wife, children, and grandchildren.
Don’s wife Diana, who was at his side
throughout as a creative and tenacious
spouse advocate, ultimately received
ICAN’s Ultimate Spouse Advocate
Award in 2012. Don fought the good
fight against lung cancer with the love
of family first and foremost in his heart.
Don faced his fight as he faced all adversity—as a silent warrior,
with one foot in front of another. He never complained
throughout four different chemo regimens, radiation therapy,
and whole brain radiation once his non small cell lung cancer
had metastasized to the brain. He amazed his ace team at Kaiser
Permanente with the longevity of his battle, the courage of his
cancer journey, his proactive questions throughout his treatment,
and the quality of life he maintained. He lived and died on his own
terms--with his love and pride in family on his lips and from a
heart attack, not from the cancer. He is much missed by his very
close and loving family and his countless cherished friends.
“ICAN...You are the voice of calm, reason, and stability
coupled with tremendous intellect and knowledge when the
rest of the world seems to be spinning out of control.”
—Diana Cameron
Diana established The Donald Henry Cameron Novel Therapeutics
Program at ICAN in 2011, in beloved memory of her husband Don.
