13–28 JUNE 2015 GLEN EIRA STORYTELLING FESTIVAL BENTLEIGH BENTLEIGH EAST BRIGHTON EAST CARNEGIE CAULFIELD ELSTERNWICK GARDENVALE GLEN HUNTLY MCKINNON MURRUMBEENA ORMOND ST KILDA EAST 03 MAYOR’S WELCOME It gives me great pleasure to introduce the annual Glen Eira Storytelling Festival. From 13 June, Glen Eira City Council will present a range of events that celebrate stories and those who tell them. The Festival has become the centrepiece of Glen Eira City Council’s Arts and Culture program and in this guide you’ll find exhibitions, historical tours, films, talks, open mic sessions and even an interactive collaborative art installation, all of which highlight the different ways we tell and share stories. Also incorporated will be the longstanding My Brother Jack Awards with prizes for short story writing, poetry and photography. The My Brother Jack Awards celebrates its 20th anniversary in 2015 and to mark the occasion, there will be a special competition category and prize as well as screenings of My Brother Jack — the miniseries. The Festival will be held in a range of venues including Glen Eira Town Hall, Caulfield; Council’s Libraries in Carnegie, Caulfield, Bentleigh and Elsternwick; local cafés, bars and other venues across Glen Eira; with events to suit all age groups, budgets and interests. Storytelling is a common and shared human experience that transcends culture, language and time. Through storytelling we can come together as a community, to share our histories, our experiences and the important stories that have been handed down through generations. Finally, I’d like to thank all the sponsors and supporters whose support has made the Festival possible. This documentary looks at how they managed such an amazing run, and what could be next for the beloved studio. In 2014, Miyazaki and Takahata both directed their final films, with The Wind Rises and The Tale of the Princess Kaguya respectively. As Ghibli celebrates its 30th birthday, award-winning filmmaker Mami Sunada gives us unprecedented access into its unique, fascinating world. Please note: this film will be screened in Japanese with English subtitles. The Songs They Sang tells the true story of the musical performances inside the Vilna Ghetto, Lithuania during the Holocaust. It explores the resilience of the Jewish people who created art in the face of the most horrific persecutions. The film centres on two poets, Shmerke Kaczerginski and Avrom Sutzkever, and the songs composed by them and others encamped in the ghetto. In the face of a horrendous reality these artists refused to relinquish their culture and brought hope to a besieged people. www.thesongstheysang.com Cinema Fiasco features bad movies on the big screen with hilarious live commentary by film buff comedians Geoff Wallis and Janet A. McLeod. Bad movies are one of life’s guilty pleasures and one that should never be enjoyed alone. Cinema Fiasco has been bringing together fans of foul films for the past six years and if you’re yet to experience an evening of awful cinema with Janet and Geoff, it’s high time you did. You’ll laugh! You’ll scream! You’ll realise how important nudity, explosions and gorilla suits are to the world of cinema! So, for a genuinely hilarious night out, get along to Cinema Fiasco to see Reptilicus. Reptilicus (1961) Denmark’s first ever monster movie!* A piece of defrosted fossil flesh regenerates into a massive, pus-spewing dinosaur and goes on a rampage, trashing a good portion of wonderful, wonderful Copenhagen. There is plenty of screaming Scandanavians, shoddily dubbed dialogue, and jaw-droppingly hilarious special effects. (Reptilicus makes the original Godzilla look like something from Jurassic Park.) Also features a bonus musical item by two-time Danish Eurovision representative Birthe Wilke (we don’t know why either). * Still the only one. 19 BABYTIME STORYTIME 11am 11am Bentleigh Library — Mondays and Fridays Bentleigh Library — Thursdays Carnegie Library — Mondays and Tuesdays Carnegie Library — Wednesdays and Fridays Caulfield Library — Mondays Caulfield Library — Thursdays Elsternwick Library — Tuesdays Elsternwick Library — Wednesdays 2pm 2pm Bentleigh Library — Wednesdays Bentleigh Library — Tuesdays Carnegie Library — Tuesdays and Thursdays Start children on their reading journey with StoryTime. This exhibition focuses on a forgotten artist from the Victorian era, Georgiana Houghton (1814–1884). Starting in 1861, and continuing up to her death, Houghton developed a complex aesthetic practice as a practicing spiritualist medium, based on automatic drawing and the perceived communication with spiritual entities. On the basis of her experiences, she produced a series of abstract watercolors meant to convey important spiritual messages to humanity. Martyn Jolly is the head of Photography and Media Arts at the ANU School of Art, and fascinated by the craze for spirit photography in the late 19th century. For this program, he will discuss forgotten Victorian era artist Georgiana and her presence in Melbourne via the carte-de-visite album of a spiritualist in the collection of the National Gallery of Australia. In most carte-de-visite albums, portraits of intimate friends rubbed shoulders with portraits of famous personages, but in this album, these images also rubbed shoulders with portraits of spirits.
