By John Koleszar, ADA President
On Saturday, May 19, 2012 the Arizona Deer Association helped serve
hot dogs, chips and soda to the shoppers who visited Cabela’s in Glendale.
For a $4.00 donation, any shopper could buy the tasty midday treat, with all
proceeds going to Operation Homefront. The organization helps provide
emergency financial and other types of assistance to the families of our
service members and to wounded warriors.
The Arizona Deer Association was approached by the retail events coordinator of Cabela’s, Rosie Martinez and asked if we would be willing to
cook and sell the hot dogs; ADA would be able to keep half the proceeds
and the Operation Homefront would get half. Cabela’s generously provided
all the food and ADA’s Board of Directors quickly agreed it would be an
honor to cook the food and collect the money. The only change we suggested was that instead of splitting the revenue, ALL the funds would go to
Operation Homefront.
Kimberly Doris, director of development and events coordinator for Operation Homefront, had a number of military personnel in attendance, along
with Humvees, non-functioning weapons and tactical armor. Kids of all
ages were able to try on the armor, backpacks and heft the weaponry. The
Cabela’s patrons were extremely generous as the very first couple who visited donated a $100 bill... and then didn’t even take their hot dogs! While
the weather hovered near the 100 degree mark, we were able to keep a little
cooler as we handled our grill and seating under the large porch/overhang
at the Cabela’s front entrance. Under the direction of the always prepared
ADA Youth Director Scott Streich, the ADA Board members spent their
Saturday serving up good food and answering questions. When all was said
and done, ADA and Cabela’s were able to raise $600 for Operation Homefront for this Saturday event.
A ton of thanks to Cabela’s for their generosity as well as to all of those
who spent time and energy to make the day a success.
