United States Military Service Records
There is probably no genealogist whose family has not been touched by military service. Every
day additional databases are being added to the internet, opening up
new research treasures.
Service records from the Korean and Vietnam wars are now available
and can provide a wide variety of information about military personnel
who served in those conflicts.
Two excellent resources for finding individual records are:
www.koreanwar.org/
http://thewall-usa.com/.
For “one-stop shopping”, Ancestry.com has many of these records
available on their website. However, for those who do not subscribe to
the site, NARA (National Archives and Records Administration) website provides a free and user-friendly option.
One advantage to using NARA is that searches can be done by several criteria, other than by name only.
Military Service Records are being added at a phenomenal rate. There
are so many areas to explore that the researcher needs to return to the
website often.
To search the NARA databases go to: http://aad.archives.gov/aad/
Under Genealogy/Personal History or Wars/International Relations
there are a number of categories that contain the searchable records.
One of the searchable record lists follows……….

CASCADE COUNTY VETERAN BURIALS
Cascade County provides a burial allowance for qualifying veterans. Generally the funeral home
works with a representative from the Veterans’ Administration to evaluate qualifications and to
submit the allowance claim to the County program coordinator.
Payment is usually made directly to the funeral home in the allowable amount of $250. There
may also be a payment of $70 toward a headstone.
Veterans must be a resident of Cascade County at the time of death, have served at least 90 days
active duty, and proof of honorable discharge must be provided. There are about 200 qualified
veteran burials a year. Burials for 2008 thru the current date are posted on our website.
Information varies depending on the type of separation document —
DD Form 214, Discharge Papers and Separation Documents
A Report of Separation is generally issued when a service member performs active duty or at least 90 consecutive days of active duty training. The Report of Separation
contains information normally needed to verify military service for benefits, retirement,
employment, and membership in veterans' organizations. Information shown on the
Report of Separation may include the service member's:
Date and place of entry into active duty
· Home address at time of entry
· Date and place of release from active duty
· Home address after separation
· Last duty assignment and rank
· Military job specialty
· Military education
· Decorations, medals, badges, citations, and campaign awards
· Total creditable service
· Foreign service credited
· Separation information (type of separation, character of service, authority and reason
for separation, separation and re-enlistment eligibility codes)

Four Prayers by Chaplains
The 15-minute interment ceremony on the
hillside just below the flag- draped amphitheater began
with four prayers of committal - Jewish, Eastern Orthodox, Roman Catholic and Protestant - by military chaplains while the ramrod-straight bearers held the flag that
had been draping the coffin above it.
Then President Reagan, who had stood solemnly
with his hand over his heart, placed the wreath in front of
the Unknown. Next came a 21-gun salute, which echoed
dramatically in the distance, the benediction and the firing
of three rifle volleys.
A bugler played taps. The bearers ceremoniously folded the flag while the band played ''America
the Beautiful.'' President Reagan saluted and the remains of the fourth officially designated American
soldier ''known but to God'' took his place in history .
By ROBERT D. HERSHEY Jr.
Special to The New York Times
ARLINGTON, Va., May 28 -- 1984
His voice choking with emotion, President
Reagan led the nation in a state funeral today for the
only American known to have perished in the Vietnam
War who is still unidentified. Under gray skies, which
occasionally dripped with rain, the unknown Vietnam
casualty was pulled on a black caisson along a crowded
seven-mile route from the Capitol and, 11 years after the
war ended, was interred in the Tomb of the Unknowns at
Arlington National Cemetery.
Awarded Medal of Honor
The serviceman, whom Mr. Reagan awarded
the Medal of Honor, the nation's highest military decoration, now lies in a crypt near unknown servicemen from
the two World Wars and the Korean War. They had been
awarded Medals of Honor by other Presidents.
''The unknown soldier who has returned to us
today and whom we lay to rest is symbolic of all our
missing sons,'' the President said in his eulogy. In Vietnam, 58,012 United States servicemen died.
Mr. Reagan also sought to reassure the families
of 2,447 servicemen and 42 civilians still listed as missing that the Government would not relax its efforts to
account for them.
Just before placing the Medal of Honor in front
of the coffin at his left side in the amphitheater apse, Mr.
Reagan looked at the coffin and, his voice breaking, said
of the Unknown: ''About him we may well wonder, as
others have, as a child, did he play on some street in a
great American city? Did he work beside his father on a
farm in America's heartland? Did he marry? Did he have
children? Did he look expectantly to return to a bride?
''We will never know the answers to these questions about his life. We do know, though, why he died.
He saw the horrors of war but bravely faced them, certain his own cause and his country's cause was a noble
one, that he was fighting for human dignity for free men
everywhere.”
'Thank You, Dear Son'
A half-minute later, his voice giving way again,
the President concluded, saying, ''Let us, if we must,
debate the lessons learned at some other time. Today we
simply say with pride: Thank you, dear son, and may
God cradle you in his loving arms.''
With that, he laid a wreath in front of the coffin.
THE REST
STORY……………...
OF
THE
DNA testing has proven that the remains buried in the tomb of the unknowns
at Arlington National Cemetery were those
of United States Air Force Lieutenant,
Michael Joseph Blassie.
On July 10, 1998 Lieutenant
Blassie’s remains were returned to his family and were buried in his home town of St.
Louis, Missouri on July 11, 1998.
Since then, the crypt for an unknown Vietnam veteran has remained empty.
