Morris is popular among dance aficionados, the music world, and mainstream audiences. MARK MORRIS DANCE GROUP SEPT 21 & 22 7:30 PM & 2:00PM 2013 SAT & SUN 5 9 6 Formed in New York City in 1980, MMDG’s touring schedule steadily expanded to include cities in the U.S. and Europe. In 1986 it made its first national television appearance for the PBS series “Dance in America.” In 1988, MMDG was invited to become the national dance company of Belgium, and spent three years in residence at the Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie in Brussels. The company returned to the United States in 1991 as one of the world’s leading dance companies. Mark has collaborated with artists from Mikhail Baryshnikov to Yo-Yo Ma to Isaac Mizrahi. He has created works for, among many others, the San Francisco Ballet, the Paris Opera Ballet, and American Ballet Theater, and has stage directed operas for The Metropolitan Opera, English National Opera, and the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. “ If music had arms and legs, it would look like the Mark Morris Dance Group. Morris’ choreography transcends the idea of scripted and blocked movements vs. improvisatory physical expression to fuse music and movement so completely that the movement he creates seems an inexorable part of the music to which it’s set.” – Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel www.facebook.com/ChrisThile CHRIS Chris Thile, of Punch Brothers, is a mandolin virtuoso, composer and vocalist. With his broad outlook that encompasses progressive bluegrass, classical, rock and jazz, Thile transcends the borders of conventionally circumscribed genres, creating a distinctly American canon and a new musical aesthetic for performers and audiences alike. “ Thile is an astonishing exponent of his instrument; every note is charged with musical feeling way beyond that of a mere technician.” THILE SOLO MANDOLIN 2013 Recently awarded a MacArthur Fellowship (aka “genius grant”), in February 2013 Thile also won a Grammy for his work on The Goat Rodeo Sessions, collaborating with Yo-Yo Ma, Edgar Meyer and Stuart Duncan. In Spring 2013, Thile releases Bach Sonatas & Partitas Vol. 1, also on Nonesuch Records. On this new program, he draws from his new Bach recording, while also exploring his own compositions and contemporary music. SATURDAY OCT 5 7:30 PM 9 – The Los Angeles Times 7 www.coloradosymphony.org COLORADO WEDNESDAY OCT 16 7:30 PM 2013 SYMPHONY The Colorado Symphony Schumann, Piano Concerto in A Minor, Op.54 Featuring Natasha Paremski, piano soloist Plus Other Orchestral Works Newman Center Presents is proud to present the best orchestra in our region, The Colorado Symphony, in the region’s best acoustical venue. Come experience classical music as it is meant to be heard. 8 Born in Moscow, 24-year old Natasha Paremski began her piano studies at the age of 4. In 1995 she and her family moved to the United States. She studied at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music before moving to New York to study at Mannes College of Music, from which she graduated in 2007. Her growing list of awards includes the Prix Montblanc 2007, the 2006 Gilmore Young Artist Award, top prize in the 2002 Bronislaw Kaper Awards sponsored by the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and top prize in the Young Artists in Carnegie Hall 2000 International Piano Festival. In September 2010, Natasha was named the Classical Recording Foundation’s Young Artist of the Year. www.cameroncarpenter.com Playing a Rodgers digital organ in Gates Concert Hall CAMERON A force of nature, this maverick 32-year old artist has been called “the closest we have to the virtuoso musical showmen of the 19th century, like Liszt or Paganini.” (The Washington Post) Cameron Carpenter’s flamboyant style, dazzling performances, and profound musical intelligence will transform all preconceptions you may have about organ concerts. He will play a Rodgers digital organ in Gates Concert Hall. “ Cameron Carpenter is a madly original organist whose programs careen across centuries of musical history and sashay deep into popular culture…. [H]e’s a force of nature.” “ SATURDAY NOV 9 7:30 PM 5 9 – Alex Ross, The New Yorker He is a smasher of cultural and classical music taboos. He is technically the most accomplished organist I have ever witnessed… And, most important of all, the most musical.” ORGAN 2013 His repertoire, perhaps the most diverse of any organist, includes the complete organ works of Bach, Franck, and Liszt, but he has also adapted more than 200 works, written his own compositions, and collaborated with jazz and pop artists. He is the first organist ever nominated for a GRAMMY® Award for a solo album. He is the 2012 recipient of the coveted Leonard Bernstein Award, he tours worldwide at the most prestigious venues, and has a long-term commitment from the Berlin Philharmonic to open its organ series each year. CARPENTER – Los Angeles Times 9 www.mosespendleton.com MOMIX “BOTANICA” NOV 22 & 23 7:30 PM 10 2013 FRI & SAT Moses Pendleton, Artistic Director The renowned dancer-illusionists of MOMIX make their debut at the Newman Center with the spectacular “Botanica,” revealing nature’s ever-changing imagery, set to a score ranging from birdsong to Vivaldi, Peter Gabriel to Delerium. This brilliant production, which has been touring the world to packed houses and ecstatic reviews, is enhanced by otherworldly costumes, mesmerizing projections, and world-renowned puppetry. “Botanica” is dance at its most organic and inventive, a world of boundless imagination for audiences of all ages. www.ethelcentral.org | www.mirabal.com For thousands of years humankind has turned toward the sun for inspiration, be it spiritual, philosophical, or poetic. In many Native American cultures each day begins with “running to the sun,” a fusion of spiritual and physical discipline, a daily search for the sacred. ETHEL, the pioneering string quartet, and GRAMMY® winning Native American flutist Robert Mirabal, present a program inspired by sun mythology. Using the instruments of the string quartet, Native American flutes and drums, as well as the spirited voices of chorus members, ETHEL and Mirabal create a cross-cultural contemporary music event. Taos musician, writer, singer and storyteller Robert Mirabal is a dynamic and bestselling artist. In addition to the music and instruments he creates, he is also a celebrated painter, poet and playwright. Acclaimed as “one of the most exciting quartets around” (Strad Mag) and “as a necessary jet of cold water in the contemporary classical scene” (Pitchfork.com), the string quartet ETHEL has been a post-classical pioneer since it was founded in 1998. With an eye on tradition and an ear to the future, ETHEL is a leading force in concert music’s reengagement with musical vernaculars, fusing diverse traditions into a vibrant sound that resonates with audiences the world over. “ MUSIC OF THE SUN” 2013 ETHEL, a string quartet, with guest artist Robert Mirabal, Native American Flute and Members of the Opera Colorado Chorus THURSDAY DEC 12 7:30 PM 9 This project received support from Colorado Creative Industries; WESTAF, the Western State Arts Federation; and the National Endowment for the Arts. 11 www.chickcorea.com | www.belafleck.com “DUETS” CHICK&COREA THURSDAY JAN 16 7:30 PM 12 2014 BÉLA FLECK 5 9 Whenever Chick Corea and Béla Fleck take to the stage, genres fly fast and furious. Performing together, these two master musicians weave duets out of staggering virtuosity, creating mind-blowing and magical performances. Béla Fleck, considered the premiere banjo player in the world, lives to improvise and loves to work with unexpected musical fusions. In high school, Béla began experimenting by playing bebop on the banjo. His “blu-bop” mix of jazz and bluegrass with his Flecktones was an unexpected commercial success, as well as critically-acclaimed and award-winning. Fleck has won 8 GRAMMY® awards and is the only musician to be nominated for the GRAMMY® in the jazz, bluegrass, pop, country, gospel, composition and world music categories. Chick Corea’s restless creativity knows no bounds. His groundbreaking band Return to Forever launched the fusion era of the 1970’s. His work with flamenco great Paco de Lucia led to the formation of Touchstone, a band whose fiery Latinismo music bridged the worlds of flamenco and jazz. Chick’s whole career is the stuff of jazz lore, an amalgamation of influential, limit-stretching, genre-bending musical experiences that have garnered him 12 GRAMMY® awards and legions of fans worldwide. www.treymcintyre.com Over 18 years as a freelance choreographer, Trey McIntyre created more than 90 works for companies including Houston Ballet, Stuttgart Ballet, American Ballet Theatre, New York City Ballet, Moscow Ballet Theatre, Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, Aspen/Santa Fe Ballet, and Miami City Ballet. In 2008, Trey chose to base his own new company, Trey McIntyre Project, in Boise, Idaho, where it has become the City’s Economic Development Cultural Ambassador. Trey believes in the power of art and dance to transform, heal and enlighten. TREY MCINTYRE TMP has performed, to great critical acclaim in hundreds of prestigious venues across the world including the Brooklyn Academy of Music, Carnegie Hall, the Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival, Walt Disney Concert Hall, and the University of California at Berkeley’s Zellerbach Hall. PROJECT “ One thing about [Trey McIntyre’s] Boise-based ensemble is certain: They are fully dedicated to its Americana brand, remarkably wholesome in delivery and laden with the type of nostalgia that makes the audience yearn for yesteryear.… [I]t’s evident that one of McIntyre’s best attributes as a choreographer is his pensive consideration for pop-culture. Where some might avoid pop’s bubbly overtones, McIntyre embraces it and utilizes it effectively…. You say you want a revolution? For the dance world, it seems to be happening in Boise.” – Time Out Chicago 2014 This project received support from Colorado Creative Industries; WESTAF, the Western State Arts Federation; and the National Endowment for the Arts. FRIDAY JAN 31 7:30 PM 13 icarusfilms.com/new2012/mine.html | www.acmemusic.org | www.johannjohannsson.com | www.denverbrass.org “ THE MINERS’ TUESDAY FEB 11 7:30 PM 2014 HYMNS ” 9 Film by Bill Morrison Music by Jóhann Jóhannsson, Produced by Forma, Featuring American Contemporary Music Ensemble (ACME) and The Denver Brass This elegy, in film and music, to the coal mining history of northeast England, is the product of an exceptional creative collaboration between renowned filmmaker Bill Morrison (Decasia) and Icelandic musician and composer Jóhann Jóhannsson. Collaged from rare archive film footage and drawing on the British mining industry’s brass music culture, “The Miners’ Hymns” celebrates the labor, endurance, vibrant community and rich culture that characterized the lives of those who worked underground. 14 This haunting and inspired documentary project “leaves the audience with the ineffable sense of being between times, landscapes and emotions,” according to The Washington Post. In 2012, The New Yorker’s classical music critic Alex Ross named The Miners’ Hymns best film score of the year. Supported by The Antonia and Vladimir Kulaev Cultural Heritage Fund, Inc. www.coloradosymphony.org The Colorado Symphony Hilary Kole Pays Tribute to the Music of Judy Garland COLORADO Get ready for the Academy Awards® broadcast by joining the Colorado Symphony for an afternoon of unforgettable music made famous by the one and only Judy Garland. Hilary Kole takes us on a musical journey through some of Judy’s classic films such as Meet Me in St. Louis, Broadway Melody, A Star is Born, and The Wizard of Oz. Come experience the American songbook as defined by one of the most singular talents of the 20th century. Ms. Kole belongs to the pop-jazz school of Ann Hampton Callaway and Jane Monheit. Jazzy and swinging but solidly middle of the road in attitude, she has a warm glowing tone and a forthright interpretive approach that focuses on lyrics phrase by phrase.” 2014 “ SYMPHONY SUNDAY FEB 23 2:00 PM – The New York Times 15 www.gabrielkahane.com | www.ymusicensemble.com Writing and performing music that moves effortlessly from modernism to vernacular song, pianist, composer, and singer Gabriel Kahane returns to Newman Center Presents after appearing in 2011 with his father, noted pianist and conductor Jeffrey Kahane. Of that concert, The Denver Post said: “Wondering what Denver’s classical scene needs more of? Unconventional, imaginative and crowd-pleasing programs like this one.” GABRIEL KAHANE Gabe has established himself as a leading voice among a generation of young indie composers redefining music for the 21st century. Kahane performs with a variety of influential artists, including Chris Thile, Brad Mehldau, and cellist Alisa Weilerstein. & yMUSIC MAR 6 7:30 PM 16 2014 THURSDAY The exciting ensemble of six players who call themselves yMusic features guitarist/violinist Rob Moose (Bon Iver, Antony and the Johnsons) and trumpet player CJ Camerieri (Sufjan Stevens, American Composers Orchestra). yMusic and Gabe will each perform sets of their own in the first half of the show. Then after intermission Gabe will join yMusic for an energetic and great time. 5 9 www.trockadero.org LES BALLETS TROCKADERO 2014 DE MONTE CARLO Founded in 1974 by a group of ballet enthusiasts for the purpose of presenting a playful, entertaining, parody of classical ballet (en travesti), The Trocks, as they have come to be known, first performed in the late-late shows in Off-Off Broadway lofts. They quickly garnered a major critical essay in The New Yorker, and combined with reviews in The New York Times and The Village Voice, established the Company as an artistic and popular success. Very soon their inspired blend of a loving knowledge of dance, a comic approach, and the astounding fact that men can, indeed, dance en pointe without falling flat on their faces, earned them a permanent slot in the dance world. The Newman Center presented The Trocks to a sold-out house in 2008, and now they’re back! Ballet is rarely funny, but The Trocks are… very. THURSDAY MAR 20 7:30 PM “ America’s all-male ballet parodists proved once again they have the technique to go with the humour” - The Sunday Telegraph 17 www.pacopena.com | www.eliotfisk.com Guitar Masters PACO&PEÑA Eliot Fisk and Paco Peña, two of the world’s virtuoso guitarists, find common ground as Fisk, a classical virtuoso, and Peña, a peerless flamenco guitarist, demonstrate their technical mastery, innovative improvisation and emotional bravura in solos and duets. ELIOT FISK APR 26 7:30 PM 2014 SATURDAY Fisk, a star pupil of the legendary Andrés Segovia, is a leading force in the world of classical guitar, commissioning numerous works from contemporary composers while continuing to explore the great composers of the past, from Bach to Albéniz. 9 18 Peña, quite simply, is one of the best flamenco guitarists in the world. He has also found time to direct the Paco Peña Flamenco Dance Company, write a flamenco drama, mass and requiem, and continue to compose original works for guitar. Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra, with Vocalist Kim Nazarian A TRIBUTE TO Dubbed “The First Lady of Song,” Ella Fitzgerald was the most popular female jazz singer in the United States for more than half a century. She won 13 GRAMMY® awards and sold over 40 million albums. This special “Tribute to Ella Fitzgerald” program will present many of Ella’s original big band arrangements made available through the assistance of the Ella Fitzgerald Charitable Foundation. Many of these arrangements, by the likes of Count Basie, Billy Strayhorn, and Benny Carter, have not been heard in concert in over 40 years. The Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra (SJMO) comes together with regional musicians and features New York Voices co-founder Kim Nazarian, paying tribute to Ella. Nazarian was clearly thrilled to honor Fitzgerald… with the formidable support of the Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra…. Nazarian’s assignment, of course, was about as unenviable as they come, given Fitzgerald’s nonpareil gift for swinging, scatting and exuding effervescent charm. But Nazarian held up her end of the bargain, displaying a voice powerful enough to pierce through blaring trumpets and agile enough to recall the seamless quality that made Fitzgerald’s recordings with the late guitarist Joe Pass so compelling and intimate.” – The Washington Post www.smithsonianjazz.org www.kimnazarian.com FITZGERALD SAT & SUN 2014 “ ELLA MAY 10 & 11 7:30 PM & 2:00 PM 5 9 19 www.coloradosymphony.org COLORADO WEDNESDAY MAY 14 7:30 PM 20 2014 SYMPHONY The Colorado Symphony Andrew Litton, cond.
