Into its 13th year, the National Heritage Board’s signature Singapore HeritageFest promises yet another edition of heritage fun! Spanning three weekends from 29 April to 15 May, Singapore HeritageFest 2016 will present the hidden and lesser-known stories about our shared spaces and ways of life. Through immersive programmes such as trails, open houses and performances, the festival will enable Singapore’s diverse communities to share their stories with the public and bring these valuable memories to life in celebration of our vibrant cultural heritage. Join us for a gastronomic walk down memory lane with Singapore’s next-generation hawkers, discover the hidden tales of historic Bukit Pasoh and old-time Bedok, and experience a different side of our National Monuments through specialist architectural tours, music recitals and film screenings. Step back in time and experience the rustic beauty and simple pleasures of life on Pulau Ubin, home to what many consider to be Singapore’s last living kampong (Malay for “village”). Relive the 1960s street food culture at the museum over the festival opening weekend! Indulge in popular local dishes such as Indian rojak, wanton noodles and satay as you enjoy live performances on the museum’s front lawn. You can even learn about the family stories behind the various stalls and how their traditional recipes have been passed down through the generations. Come dressed in 1960s vintage wear to enjoy one free drink (with purchase of two drinks) at the Joo Gwee drink stall. The trio uses predominantly Chinese instruments but combines modern techniques as well as multicultural musical influences. A Celebration with the ACJC Alumni Choir Sat, 30 Apr | 4pm & 6pm Rotunda, Level 1 Free Formed in 1992, the Anglo-Chinese Junior College (ACJC) Alumni Choir has a long tradition of commissioning works by local composers as well as performing folk songs from around the region. From its experimental beginnings to its use as an influential wartime medium, and its roles in entertainment and shaping society, Celebrating Radio: Sounds from the Past traces the evolution of Singapore’s broadcasting history from the 1930s to 1980s. Items on display include a phonograph dating back to the 1920s, radio permits and photographs, as well as a selection of radios from different eras. Visitors can take a walk down a Singapore radio “Hall of Fame”, featuring well-known radio personalities from different eras. 5 Image courtesy of Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts Discover what constitutes the Singapore identity in this physical theatre performance by students and alumni from the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA), who will take the audience through Singapore’s history and present their personal reflections on the multicultural roots of Singapore society through their artistic practice. Plus, get up close and personal with the DJs in a CD exchange session and listen to some of their favourite songs. Majie were a group of women who came to Singapore from Guangdong, China, in the early 20th century to be domestic housekeepers. Although majie usually took vows of celibacy and pledged not to marry for life, it was a common practice for them to adopt young daughters. Despite disappearing from the local scene in the 1980s, some majie still live in Chinatown today. Several “descendants” of majie have since stepped out to share their experiences. This engaging talk by Lee Kok Leong, author of Guang Dong Ma Jie, explores how and why majie came to Singapore, and why they chose to adopt and raise children of their own. A decade ago, the hobby appeared to be in terminal decline because of the near-universal availability of mobile internet and smartphones; yet today there are more licensed hams than ever before. Peranakan author Josephine Chia nearly did not go to school as her family was too poor in the 1950s. She was born and brought up in Kampong Potong Pasir until its dissolution in the 1970s. To help her fulfill her dream for an education, her beloved mother sold nasi lemak to fund Josephine’s schooling. In this talk, Josephine will share her memories of her kampong, her Peranakan heritage and life in Singapore in the 1950s. Roland Turner describes how the evolution of radio affected hams, and explores the relationship between the appearance of the maker movement and the resurgence of amateur radio. Susanna Goho-Quek breathes life into the lotus shoes worn by women who had bound feet, sharing her childhood and travel experiences that are interwoven into her lifelong fascination with foot binding. Her accounts of bound feet draw on her visits to China, where she met expert collectors, as well as on her family’s stories. Learn about the hidden stories and special nooks of the neighbourhood through trails conducted by specialists and former residents. At hands-on workshops and talks, participants can interact with the business owners and arts groups that call Bukit Pasoh home. The streets come alive with a weekend of outdoor movie screenings, and dance and music performances. The public can also look forward to savouring special menus by selected restaurants and cafes in the vicinity, created exclusively for Singapore HeritageFest 2016. Those who arrived by sea often found accommodation and jobs in this area and it soon became a place where one could get virtually any Chinese supplies, especially those for Chinese festivals. Join blogger Victor Yue as he shares the stories of his childhood days growing up in a multi-tenant house in Tua Po, where one toilet and kitchen were shared by many, and playtime in the neighbourhood often involved gang fights! 7 Decades of Life in and around South Bridge Road in Chinatown by Dr Ho Nai Kiong Sun, 1 May | 2.30pm Free Presented in Mandarin What was it like growing up in Chinatown back in the olden days? Listen to the rich experiences and childhood stories of Dr Ho Nai Kiong, whose father was the founder of On Cheong Goldsmith in Chinatown. Learn how and why he has a passion for comics and hear about his fascination with two of his favourite comic series, Bruce Lee and Chinese Hero. Kua will also have a dialogue with local illustrator James Teo, on how the latter’s style of comic illustration was influenced by Hong Kong illustrators from the 1970s to 1980s. Founded in 1840 to promote education, provide social welfare and preserve Chinese language and culture, the Singapore Hokkien Huay Kuan represents the largest Chinese regional group in Singapore. Did you know that the Ee Hoe Hean Club was popularly known as the Chinese Millionaires’ Club? It later became the headquarters of an antiJapanese union from 1937 to 1942. Learn more about this precinct and discover how clan associations have evolved to stay relevant in today’s modern society. Highlights of the tour include a rare opportunity to visit the Goethe-Institut, a key landmark in Bukit Pasoh, where participants can learn how the conservation work on the old building was carried out. In this guided tour by Lee Kok Leong (author of Guang Dong Ma Jie), participants will learn more about the area’s early days, including stories of the majie (domestic housekeepers) who lived in Chinatown. Local writer Charmaine Leung will also share her stories about growing up in Keong Saik – from racy Chinese brothels to sights of night soil collectors and the buzz of coolie quarters near Sri Layan Sithi Vinayagar Temple. Kong Chow Wui Koon Sat & Sun, 30 Apr & 1 May | Various Timings Free (registration required), visit heritagefest.sg for details Kong Chow Wui Koon was founded in 1840 by Xinhui clansmen from Guangdong’s Pearl River Delta, and is well known for its traditional Chinese martial arts, lion and dragon dances, as well as Cantonese opera. In 1946, after the end of the Japanese Occupation in Singapore, the association also established the Chin Kang School to provide education and night classes for working adults. All ticketed events and film screenings are available on a first come, first served basis. 16 FESTIVAL Highlights FESTIVAL Highlights Gan Clan Singapore Founded in 1966, Gan Clan Singapore (formerly known as The Gan Clan Association) is a non-profit organisation with roots dating back to the pre-war days of Singapore in 1926. Today, the association has about 700 members and is increasingly acknowledged by both local and overseas institutions for its achievements in rejuvenating itself. A selection from the objects unearthed and tools used in the dig help bring the earthy world of archaeology to life. Contextualising the site, the excavation and the finds, archaeologists from the dig reflect on the nature of their work. All ticketed events and film screenings are available on a first come, first served basis. 32 FESTIVAL Highlights Architectural & Cultural Heritage Conservation Awardees Guided Tours In partnership with the Urban Redevelopment Authority The URA Architectural Heritage Awards (AHA) was launched in 1995 to honour owners, developers, architects, engineers and contractors who have displayed the highest standards in conserving and restoring heritage buildings in Singapore. The UNESCO Asia-Pacific Awards for Cultural Heritage Conservation was established in 2000 to recognise and encourage private efforts and public-private initiatives in successfully restoring structures of heritage value in the region. In partnership with URA, selected awardees will conduct public guided tours during the festival to share insights on the architecture and history of Singapore’s heritage buildings and the restoration efforts behind them. Step into a Straits Chinese family home in the 1920s, furnished with heirlooms and various ceramics from the Wee family (the previous owners of the house) and other donors. All artefacts will be displayed in their original context. The third floor has been converted to an art gallery for exhibitions that explore the community and neighbourhood from different perspectives. The current exhibition, Preserve/ Conserve/ Restore: Studies at 157 Neil Road, spans a period of three years. Old St Andrew’s School and the Church of Ascension (AHA & UNESCO awardee) Sat, 7 May | 10am, 12pm & 2pm Ticketed event, visit heritagefest.sg for more details The Old St Andrew’s School was designed by Frank Brewer in 1939 and was said to be one of his finest and largest completed works in Singapore. The restoration project received the 2006 Architectural Heritage Award and the Honorable Mention at the 2007 UNESCO Asia-Pacific Heritage Awards. The Church of the Ascension was designed by Ho Kwong Yew & Sons in 1959. Completed in 1962, this place of worship is characterised by a bold, symmetrical front facade with clean and simple lines inspired by the Modern style. From afar, its most distinctive feature is its modern interpretation of the traditional church steeple. The restoration project received the 2006 Architectural Heritage Award. FESTIVAL Highlights 33 Thian Hock Keng Temple (AHA & UNESCO awardee) Sat & Sun, 7 & 8 May | 10am, 12pm & 2pm Ticketed event, visit heritagefest.sg for more details Thian Hock Keng Temple is one of Singapore’s oldest and most important temples for immigrants from southern China’s Fujian province. Completed in 1842 and standing on what used to be the shoreline, it is dedicated to Ma Zu, the Goddess of the Sea. While most of the building materials came from China, the temple incorporates cast-iron railings from Scotland and tiles from England and Holland. The restoration project received the 2001 Architectural Heritage Award and the Honorable Mention at the 2001 UNESCO Asia-Pacific Heritage Awards. Yueh Hai Ching Temple (AHA & UNESCO awardee) Sat & Sun, 7 & 8 May | 10am, 12pm & 2pm Ticketed event, visit heritagefest.sg for more details Well known for its richly ornamented roof, vibrant wall reliefs and frescoes outside and within its walls, the Yueh Hai Ching temple was built in the 1820s and has since been faithfully and articulately restored with deep respect for the monument’s architectural roots. At every turn, its stunning restoration demonstrates thoughtful choices informed by extensive archival research and technical consultations with local and overseas architectural experts and temple craftsmen. The restoration project received the 2014 Architectural Heritage Award and the Award of Merit at the 2014 UNESCO Asia-Pacific Heritage Awards. 9 Neil Road (URA Pilot Restoration Project) Sun, 8 May | 10am, 12pm & 2pm Ticketed event, visit heritagefest.sg for more details Between 1987 and 1988, 32 dilapidated shophouses of a hybrid Hokkien-Teochew style were restored by URA. This was the first project undertaken by the government to demonstrate to the private sector that it was technically possible and commercially viable to restore Singapore’s heritage buildings to their former glory. The first shophouse unit to be restored was 9 Neil Road and it was later converted into a teahouse which hosted Queen Elizabeth II on her state visit in 1989. Heritage School – St Patrick’s School Guided Tour Fri, 14 May | 10am, 12pm & 2pm Ticketed event, visit heritagefest.sg for more details A “school by the sea” is an apt description of St Patrick’s School in Katong. Built on a six-hectare plot of land bought by the De La Salle Brothers in 1897, the original school building dates back to 1933. The school was well-received by the British colonial authorities and weathered the Second World War as the headquarters for the Japanese Air Force as well as the Australian and British hospitals. After the war, the Brothers returned and re-established the school to serve Singapore’s nation-building needs. Many generations of St Patrick’s students have become prominent members of society.
