PGS 140-141 1 welcome to the WILLAMETTE On behalf of the 66 Willamette Valley wineries participating in our inaugural “Willamette” The Pinot noir Barrel Auction for the trade, I would like to welcome you to our majestic valley. This is our home. Fifty years ago, our wine pioneers were convinced that the Willamette Valley’s unique climate, soils and geography would one day make it one of the most important Pinot noir producing regions in the world. To them, Oregon was not just an ideal place for planting Pinot noir. It represented the final frontier where winegrowers could practice their trade in a biologically diverse and ecologically balanced environment; a “Wild West” forged by volcanoes, oceanic uplift and ice age flooding. They made a promise to themselves and future generations to produce the highest quality wines, and they would do it in complete synergy with nature, placing their responsibility as good stewards of the land they were given above all else. Our community’s founders also quickly realized that the success of this unique cottage industry was built on sharing everything they learned by hard experience and careful observation from each new vintage. Through cooperation and collaboration in every aspect of a shared endeavor, their spirit of camaraderie permeates our industry to this day. They had each other’s backs in the early days, and that spirit remains as a beacon to the stream of adventurers and idealists looking to handcraft the finest Pinot noirs here in our Willamette Valley. Today there are more than 500 wineries and nearly 700 vineyards in the Willamette Valley AVA. Our winegrowers farm this expansive and varied appellation that includes six sub-AVAs Chehalem Mountains, Dundee Hills, Eola-Amity Hills, McMinnville, Ribbon Ridge and Yamhill-Carlton. Today our pioneers and their children and the many newcomers to the Willamette Valley stand at the same table as brothers and sisters, working harder than ever to continue the initial work and vision of showcasing this region’s potential. We are thrilled to welcome you. Here you will find Pinot noir, some of the world’s finest. You will find individuals, some of the world’s most unique. And at our first “Willamette” The Pinot noir Barrel Auction you will find small lots of the very wines that tell our story. Great wines from great terroirs, from single barrels, or small blends that continue to unfurl the complex rose that is our valley and our history and our community. Thank you for attending our event, and thank you for your support. We are thrilled to have you as our guests. Please go out and discover the stunning natural beauty, savor the good company and the delightful foods, but above all else, revel in the wines. ha p p y b i d d in g a t the a u ct ion! Josh believes this wine captures the essence of the Oregon winemaking story as it hails from the soils that started the Oregon wine community 50+ years ago and it marries the pioneering Pommard clone of Pinot noir with the newer generation Pinot noir Dijon 667 clone. This Biodynamic wine was fermented in a French oak tank using the 100% whole cluster method and was aged in a new French oak barrel from the Allier forest. Josh believes that, like his personal winemaking style, this rare Pinot noir showcases Oregon’s balance of Old World tradition and New World vibrancy. ta s t in g n o te s From the block of Bergström Vineyard in the Dundee Hills which sits next to the cherry trees, this elegant and age-worthy Pinot noir is dark ruby red in color and leads off with reductive aromas of earth, bright raspberry and cherry fruits as well as cocoa. The wine is sweet and savory with excellent succulent acidity and fine grain ripe tannins. There is a subtle bouquet of sweet oak and baking spices as well as the spiciness of a whole cluster fermentation. This one of a kind Pinot noir is charming and youthful but very serious and will reward the consumer with 5-8 years or more of bottle age. 6 w i n e r y i n fo r m a t ion Bergström Wines is a family owned and operated artisan producer of Pinot noir and Chardonnay. It was started in 1999 by Dr. John and Karen Bergström, with the help of their son Josh Bergström and his wife Caroline. Josh is General Manager, Vineyard Manager and Winemaker. He pulls his expertise from his education in Burgundy France and his 16 years experience making wines in Oregon’s Northern Willamette Valley. Bergström focuses on handcrafting small lots of wines from their five estate vineyards. All estate acreage is farmed biodynamic, and all wines express the wonderful diversity of Oregon’s many great terroirs. NOTES 7 — LOT# 2 — CHEHALEM 2014 5 Acre Block, 33 Year Complexity lot size 10 CASES vineyard name RIDGECREST ava RIBBON RIDGE winemaker WYNNE PETERSON-NEDRY HARVEST 9/29/14 BOTTLING 2/12/16 ALC 13.9% w i n e d e s c r ip t ion Late September 2014 saw the end of a warmly ripening vintage, Ribbon Ridge busy with clicking grape shears, dust boiling from trailers and flatbed trucks heading to wineries, and full picking lugs getting heavy and sticky by the end of the day. A far cry from 33 years before when the parent vines to this wine began, own-rooted vines from the Eyrie operation, half Pommard and half Wädenswil, ready to struggle with dry farming their entire lives, each season depending on moisture Mother Nature brought rather than irrigation, forcing roots to deeply and broadly explore the ocean sedimentary soil of Ribbon Ridge, a key to the robustness that aged and balanced wines here exhibit in very dry or wet vintages. These vines started the first vineyard on Ribbon Ridge, on a plot of land at the crest of Ribbon Ridge we named Ridgecrest. It has been the source of Chehalem Reserve Pinot noirs for the 20 years we’ve made them. ta s t in g n o te s As Ribbon Ridge normally delivers, this wine is superbly balanced from classically late harvests and yet great retained acidity, providing in this warmer year saturated dark-to-black fruit of blackberry-huckleberry and the moderate plum-skin tannin structure for aging. Dark and elegant, it has the lift and spice of sweet, fresh and exotic new barrel, reminiscent of five spice black cherry cake or spice cabinet stimulations of cinnamon, anise, tea leaf, and tobacco. It’s all about elegance, richness, complexity and sensuous, drippingly ripe black fruit. 8 w i n e r y i n fo r m a t ion CHEHALEM Winery is known for Pinot noir, but also equivalently for white wines. And we’re proud of that, speaking eloquently to the first half of a meal as well as the last half. The climate and our winemaking style reveal wines that emphasize balance, elegance, and texture rather than power and size. This openness allows the vintage and three terroirs on which we farm in the Ribbon Ridge, Dundee Hills, and Chehalem Mountains to express themselves, not with words but with wines of startling distinction. Mature vineyards, mature winemaking, consistently great wines. NOTES 9 — LOT# 3 — PENNER-ASH WINE CELLARS 2014 Willamette Barrel Auction Cuvée lot size 10 CASES ava YAMHILL-CARLTON & DUNDEE HILLS HARVEST 9/17 - 10/3/14 winemaker LYNN PENNER-ASH BOTTLING 9/15 ALC 13.8% w i n e d e s c r ip t ion The AVAs of the Willamette Valley have distinct personalities that we enjoy showcasing with our Vineyard Designate series. When we are given the opportunity to craft a wine of blended AVAs, it gives us the opportunity to highlight what we find so delightful with each AVA. “I love the focus and freshness of fruit from the Dundee Hills AVA. The wines we make from this AVA often remind me of eating fresh fruit right off the vine. The Yamhill Carlton AVA is often more wild and rustic in nature. The fruit is more in the dried or spiced category along with added structure. Being able to blend a wine from the Bella Vida Vineyard (Dundee Hills AVA) and our Estate Vineyard (Yamhill-Carlton AVA) gives us a wine that is focused, filled with bright berry fruit, with a spiced structure. A delightful wine now, but one that can certainly handle the test of time,” explains winemaker Lynn Penner-Ash. ta s t in g n o te s Aromas of rose petal, lavender, and red cherries. Silky tannins compliment notes of fresh blackberry, cassis, and vanilla bean. Finishes with sweet oak and violets. 10 w i n e r y i n fo r m a t ion Penner-Ash Wine Cellars embodies the spirit and passion of small producers focusing on Pinot noir in the Northern Willamette Valley. Winemaker Lynn Penner-Ash graduated from UC Davis with a degree in enology and began her career in the wine industry in California. Intrigued by a relatively young wine industry, Lynn and her husband Ron moved to Oregon in 1988 where Lynn became winemaker at REX HILL. In 1998, Lynn and Ron started producing Pinot noir under their own label. In the winery, the focus is on small lot indigenous yeast fermentation with extended cold soaks to extract a rich, fruit-focused textured mouthfeel. Although our focus is Pinot noir, we also produce limited quantities of Syrah and Viognier sourced from warmer growing regions, along with limited-production Riesling from the Willamette Valley. NOTES 11 — LOT# 4 — ANNE AMIE VINEYARDS 2014 Single Barrel Selection lot size 10 CASES vineyard names ANNE AMIE & TWELVE OAKS ava WILLAMETTE VALLEY winemaker THOMAS HOUSEMAN HARVEST 10/14 BOTTLING 2/16 ALC 13.7% w i n e d e s c r ip t ion Anne Amie Vineyards’ ten-case lot is a meticulous barrel selection that best expresses our two estate vineyard sites in the Chehalem Mountains and Yamhill-Carlton AVAs. Winemaker Thomas Houseman describes this as an extremely focused look at the 2014 vintage. Dark fruit and structure from sedimentary soils on our Anne Amie Estate married with plum, cherry and acid from volcanic soils on our Twelve Oaks Estate make for a hedonistic wine that can age. This is a complex, rich, and layered wine with intense black fruit, great acidity, and a nice tannic backbone. w i n e r y i n fo r m a t ion Anne Amie Vineyards, located just outside of Carlton, farms 130 acres of estate vineyards using the LIVE program of sustainable methods of agriculture. Our vineyards are located on two sites, one surrounding the winery in the Yamhill-Carlton AVA, and the other on the steep slopes of the Chehalem Mountains AVA. Focused almost exclusively on Pinot noir, Pinot gris, and Pinot blanc, we also produce a small amount of estate Riesling and Müller-Thurgau. We want each of our wines to express their variety, vineyard, and vintage, so winemaker Thomas Houseman employs a light touch in the cellar. Our goal is to produce elegant, terroir-driven wines that emphasize complexity over power. 12 NOTES 13 — LOT# 5 — LEMELSON VINEYARDS 2014 Lemelson Vineyards Barrel Selection lot size 5 CASES vineyard names STERMER & MEYER ava YAMHILL-CARLTON & DUNDEE HILLS winemaker MATT WENGEL HARVEST 9/18 + 9/23/14 BOTTLING 4/4/16 ALC 14.2% w i n e d e s c r ip t ion Lemelson Vineyards Barrel Selection represents the very best of the 2014 vintage at Lemelson Vineyards. This special blend was made from our top-end, organic estate vineyards located in Yamhill-Carlton and Dundee Hills AVAs. This Pinot noir has a clonal composition of 45% Wädenswil, 30% Pommard, and 25% Dijon clone 777. In an effort to keep this pinnacle of a wine as pure and expressive as possible, it was fermented by indigenous yeast, processed by gravity, barrel aged for 15 months in 50% new French oak, and was neither fined nor filtered. ta s t in g n o te s The wine opens with inviting fruit aromas of black cherry and blackberry, spice aromas of cinnamon, black pepper, rhubarb, and anise, and appealing aromatics of forest floor and truffle. The French oak is respectful of the wine’s fruit and adds nuances of vanilla and cocoa. The wine has amazing density, length, and power while maintaining elegance and soft, round tannins. This wine shows great potential for aging and is sure to evolve gorgeously for many years in bottle. 14 w i n e r y i n fo r m a t ion Eric Lemelson planted two acres of Pinot noir as a hobby on a hillside farm near Newberg in 1995. He enjoyed viticulture so much that within two years he planted 17 additional acres near Carlton and began to design a winery. Today, Lemelson Vineyards owns and manages 157 acres at seven sites in three AVAs (Yamhill-Carlton, Dundee Hills, and Chehalem Mountains). All vineyards have been farmed organically from the beginning, and have been certified organic since 2004. The gravity-flow winery reflects a strong commitment to sustainability and a “no-compromises” approach to wine quality. Winemaker Matthew Wengel crafts ageworthy Pinot noir, Chardonnay, Riesling, and Pinot gris using wild yeasts, long, patient elevage, and gentle processing. NOTES 15 — LOT# 6 — J. CHRISTOPHER WINES 2014 Single Barrel Selection lot size 5 CASES vineyard name ABBEY RIDGE ava DUNDEE HILLS winemaker JAY SOMERS BOTTLING 4/16 ALC 12.8% w i n e d e s c r ip t ion For the inaugural auction, we produced only five cases of 2014 Abbey Ridge Vineyard Dundee Hills Pinot noir. Aged 20 months in our underground caves in our best barrels, this wine is classic Dundee Hills. Abbey Ridge is one of the top sites for growing Pinot noir in all of the New World, and the 2014 is showing perfectly. Feminine and elegant, it is what we do best. This wine will be completely unique, coming from a two barrel lot our assistant winemaker named “C’est Magique”. ta s t in g n o te s Aromas of Herbs de Provence, crushed red fruit, earthy sanguine minerality. Elegant and feminine on the palate, showing a long and seamless finish. Fantastic balance of fruit, earth, tannins, and acidity. 16 w i n e r y i n fo r m a t ion J. Christopher Wines is a small winery located in the Chehalem Mountains AVA. Our wines are handcrafted in small lots and are sourced from some of the best vineyards in Oregon. Our specialties are Pinot noir made in the traditional style of Burgundy and Sauvignon Blanc modeled after the great wines of Sancerre. In 2010, Jay Somers cemented his bond with the Old World by forming a partnership with famed German winemaker Ernst Loosen. Working together to produce Pinot noirs that combined Old World and New World ideas seemed natural. Together they purchased a beautiful 40-acre property on Chehalem Mountain in Newberg. This is the home of the J. Christopher Winery and the Appassionate estate vineyard. NOTES 17 — LOT# 7 — YOUNGBERG HILL 2014 Single Barrel Selection lot size 5 CASES vineyard name YOUNGBERG HILL ava McMINNVILLE winemaker WAYNE BAILEY HARVEST 10/2/14 BOTTLING 12/9/15 ALC 13.7% w i n e d e s c r ip t ion This bottling is all estate grown fruit from our Natasha Block. The Natasha Block is planted to 27-year-old vines on own root Pommard and Wädenswil clones (field mix of 60% Pommard and 40% Wädenswil). The site is located at 600 feet in elevation on marine sedimentary soil. We farm organically and Biodynamically, and do not irrigate. Our farming practices are pragmatic rather than prescriptive, meaning we are constantly monitoring the vineyard and the vines to only do what nature is calling out for. ta s t in g n o te s The 2014 Barrel Select is a very dark ruby red. There are notes of rhubarb and cherry pie combined with thyme, sage, white pepper, and just a hint of wood. The flavor profile begins with dark cherry cola, currant, plum; sliding into the mid-palate with white pepper, black pepper, allspice, and a touch of flint. Moving toward the finish of chocolate, smoke, mushrooms, and autumn leaves. The wine is well structured with great balance of acidity and fruit tannins that will support this wine aging extremely well for 15 to 20 years. Best to hold until 2025. 18 w i n e r y i n fo r m a t ion Youngberg Hill combines the distinctive black fruit and earth flavors of estate grown Pinot noir with a winemaking style that allows the fruit to reflect where and under what weather conditions the fruit was grown, demonstrating the depth, structure, and complexity for which McMinnville AVA from the Willamette Valley Pinot noir is known. Set on a 50-acre hilltop, our 25-year-old vineyard is farmed organically and biodynamically, producing award winning Pinot noir, Chardonnay, Pinot blanc, and Pinot gris. As passionate farmers and winemakers, we are thrilled to share, educate, and talk wine. We respect the environment and believe that we can make a difference in how we treat the land and eachother every day. We are proud of our ‘green’ approach to wine country living and look forward to sharing it with you. NOTES 19 — LOT# 8 — LA CREMA 2014 North by East lot size 5 CASES ava YAMHILL-CARLTON winemaker ELIZABETH GRANT-DOUGLAS HARVEST 9/21 - 9/30/14 BOTTLING 3/16 ALC 14.5% w i n e d e s c r ip t ion Creating a special wine lot can be both challenging and exciting. North by East is a tribute to this rare experience. This Pinot noir is a blend of two of the northernmost estate vineyards for La Crema intended to showcase the nuance and complexity of the Yamhill-Carlton AVA. The blocks on these selected vineyards sit on east facing slopes, allowing for morning sun to gently nudge these grapes along their journey into the bottle to make up this truly one-of-a-kind 2014 vintage Pinot noir. ta s t in g n o te s Dark plum, pomegranate, and Rainier cherry with notes of black pepper and river stone. Flavors of fresh coffee with spiced dark chocolate. Finishes with velvety tannin. 20 w i n e r y i n fo r m a t ion For over 30 years, our family-owned and operated winery has focused almost exclusively on Chardonnay and Pinot noir from premier cool-climate appellations, with this focus recently extending into Oregon’s renowned Willamette Valley. Winemaker Elizabeth Grant-Douglas uses gentle, time-intensive techniques to produce La Crema wines that are distinctively balanced and elegant. A leader in sustainable vineyard and winery practices, we combine traditional farming methods with new technologies to positively impact all aspects of winemaking from the conservation of water to use of alternative energy to produce each of our wines. NOTES 21 — LOT# 9 — SOKOL BLOSSER WINERY 2014 Founders Pinot noir lot size 10 CASES vineyard name OLD VINEYARD BLOCK ava DUNDEE HILLS winemaker ALEX SOKOL BLOSSER HARVEST 9/22/14 BOTTLING 3/21/16 ALC 14.5% w i n e d e s c r ip t ion Our Founders Pinot noir is crafted with grapes picked from our Old Vineyard Block, the original vineyard site planted by our founders Susan Sokol Blosser and Bill Blosser back in 1971. Phylloxera took those own-rooted vines back in 2003, and this site was replanted in 2004. We took cuttings from the original vines before we pulled them out, and those cuttings were the “bud-wood” for the current planting which are all grafted onto rootstock. The clones are an interesting mix of Wädenswil 1A (FPS 01A), a Gamay Beaujolais type clone (FPS 18), and Pommard (FPS 04). 2014 was the first year since replanting that we felt the vines produced a wine that could be bottled on its own. It has power coming from Pommard, some nice berry notes from the Gamay, and some wonderful acid from the Wädenswil. We are thrilled to be offering our first wine from our original planted site. ta s t in g n o te s A deep ruby color foreshadows dark fruit tones of ripe black cherry and plum with hints of cinnamon, vanilla and clove. On the palate the wines sweet core is complimented by chewy tannins and a long rounded finish. 22 w i n e r y i n fo r m a t ion The Sokol Blosser family planted their first grapevines in 1971 in the Dundee Hills and now farms 85 certified organic acres. As one of the pioneering wineries of the region, Sokol Blosser has played a key role in developing and shaping the now prominent Oregon wine industry. The winery works to create wines of world-class quality, produced in a sustainable manner, which reflect the distinctive flavors of the grapes, soil, and climate, as well as the winery’s values and sense of place. Still family owned and operated by the second generation, the winery produces Pinot noir, Pinot gris, Rosé, Evolution White, Evolution Red, and Evolution Sparkling (proprietary blends), along with small quantities of Single Block Pinot noir in selected vintages. NOTES 23 — LOT# 10 — THE FOUR GRACES 2014 Noir la Grace Pinot noir lot size 5 CASES vineyard name FOLEY FAMILY ESTATE ava DUNDEE HILLS winemaker LAURENT MONTALIEU HARVEST 9/24/14 BOTTLING 1/12/16 ALC 14.1% w i n e d e s c r ip t ion The 2014 Noir la Grace was harvested from the top of the Foley Family Estate Vineyard, block #2. This elegant wine has gone through extended barrel aging, 16 months in French oak. This single clone wine is made from Pommard vines planted in 1990. The Foley Family Estate Vineyard boasts Jory soil, which is well known for its iron-rich, earthy qualities. The grapes were handpicked at peak ripeness. ta s t in g n o te s Aromas of tart cherry and lilacs are accompanied by soft baking spices. On the palate, this Pinot noir is crisp and delicate. Silky tannins lead to a lovely full mouth finish for this well balanced wine. 24 w i n e r y i n fo r m a t ion The Four Graces was established by the Black family in 2003 and has quickly grown to become one of the most successful Oregon wineries. The winery name “The Four Graces” was chosen by the founders to honor their four daughters. Purchased by the Foley Family in 2014, the Foley’s continue with the Black’s commitment to respect the land and give the utmost attention to detail at all levels of the winemaking process, which has led to wines that continue to showcase their high standards of excellence. The Four Graces’ wines come from two different vineyards, each one Salmon Safe and LIVE certified: The Black Family Vineyard nestled in the Red Hills of Dundee and Doe Ridge Vineyard in the Yamhill-Carlton AVA. NOTES 25 — LOT# 11 — OWEN ROE 2014 Old Parrett Mountain Block lot size 5 CASES vineyard name ANNA’S ava CHEHALEM MOUNTAINS winemaker DAVID O’REILLY HARVEST 9/24/14 BOTTLING 8/19/15 ALC 13.75% w i n e d e s c r ip t ion Anna’s Vineyard is our eight-acre vineyard located in the Chehalem Mountains AVA just outside of Newberg on Parrett Mountain. The E Block Dijon 114 clone is planted on the steepest slope and coolest area of the vineyard. In an average year this block shows restraint and finesse. In the opulent 2014 vintage it is darker while still exhibiting balance and minerality. The wine is an equal blend of a new and a once-filled barrel. ta s t in g n o te s The nose is layered with notes of ripe red cherry, cranberry, candied orange zest, rose petal, and baking spice. The ripe cherry notes transition onto the palate and lead into freshly picked strawberries and freshly grated nutmeg. The velvety tannins give a full and balanced mouthfeel. The wine finishes with ripe cranberry, pomegranate, and sweet pipe tobacco. 26 w i n e r y i n fo r m a t ion Since our first vintage in 1999, Owen Roe has been working to produce exceptional wines from Oregon and Washington. The winery is named after Owen Roe O’Neill, a 17th century Irish Patriot who dedicated his life to upholding the highest principles of political equality and freedom. Partners David and Angelica O’Reilly and Ben and Julie Wolff share his dedication to principle and excellence with our meticulous attention to every aspect of winemaking and farming. In the winery, we practice minimal handling and traditional techniques to produce the most authentic expression of each varietal. NOTES 27 — LOT# 12 — COELHO WINERY 2014 Zeitoun Vineyard Pinot noir lot size 5 CASES vineyard name ZEITOUN ava EOLA-AMITY HILLS winemaker DAVID COELHO HARVEST 10/5/14 BOTTLING 9/2/15 ALC 14.3% w i n e d e s c r ip t ion The Zeitoun Vineyard is a small vineyard in the Eola-Amity Hills. It was planted in 2000 and has been farmed by Coelho Winery since 2014. This wine is our first from this beautiful site. There are several soil types on the south facing site which bring a lot of character to the finished wine. This wine is 60% whole cluster, giving some wonderful aromatics and structure. It was fermented in small uninoculated lots. We employ pump-overs and minimal punchdowns for cap management to achieve gentle extraction. The wine was in contact with the skins for 12 days and was then pressed and homogenized in tank before being put in barrels. It was aged in 20% new French oak for 10 months. ta s t in g n o te s On the nose, notes of black cherry, bourbon vanilla, minerality, and earth merge with cola and strawberry compote. On the palate, a backbone of firm tannin and bright acid are surrounded by flavors of dark cherry, white pepper spice, hints of vanilla, and anise. 28 w i n e r y i n fo r m a t ion Coelho wines reflect our family’s Portuguese heritage and our spirit. We farm using sustainable viticulture methods, preserving the environment and the character of our wines. The Coelho family invites you to enjoy Portuguese family hospitality and savor our award winning wines including estate Pinot gris, Chardonnay, Pinot noir, Portuguese varietals and Port-style dessert wines. NOTES 29 — LOT# 13 — WILLAMETTE VALLEY VINEYARDS 2014 Elton Pinot noir lot size 10 CASES vineyard name ELTON ava EOLA-AMITY HILLS winemaker JIM BERNAU BOTTLING 1/14 ALC 14.2% w i n e d e s c r ip t ion Planted by Dick and Betty O’Brien in 1983, Elton Vineyards is comprised of 60 acres on the east-southeast slopes of the Eola Hills. The elevation rises from 250-500 feet and is dominated by Jory and Nekia soils. In 2007, the O’Brien’s selected Willamette Valley Vineyards as their succession plan with the agreement that upon their passing the winery will donate the sale to Chemeketa Community College’s Northwest Wine Center and Oregon State University’s Viticulture Program. These low yielding, own rooted old vines produce the most intense and pure expression of Pinot noir on our property. We chose to vinify this field-selection separately with 100% whole bunches. The wine was made completely naturally and bottled after 16 months of aging, in 100% new French oak barrels. Seven Springs Vineyard, first planted in 1983, has produced some of the finest grapes grown in the United States and was selected as one of the Top 10 Vineyards in America by Food and Wine Magazine. Situated in the northeastern Eola-Amity Hills, Seven Springs Vineyard is dry-farmed, LIVE certified and is farmed using organic, Biodynamic practices. The Pacific Ocean winds channel thru a wind gap in the coast range and circle the Eola-Amity Hills. This, combined with the shallow volcanic soils, an eastern exposure and old-vine plantings, enrich the wines with a unique expression that we find elegant, layered, and distinctive. Rajat Parr and Sashi Moorman explore the vineyards potential by isolating distinct blocks and experiment with micro-cuvées in the heart of the Seven Springs hillside. 38 w i n e r y i n fo r m a t ion The Evening Land was inspired by a mythical Greek garden where the golden fruits of immortality grew—tethered to the setting sun on the western rim of the world—just beyond the reach of mortals. This block has never before been bottled as a stand-alone wine. For its first thirteen years this block was referenced only by geographical convenience as “the West 115.” It notoriously played well with others and became a trusted component in our Estate blend. In 2008, at age fourteen, it suddenly asserted itself as one of the outstanding and truly unique lots in the cellar and became a key component in the Casteel Pinot noir, our best barrel selection of each vintage, a role it has played ever since. In 2014, at age 20, it produced one of the most compelling wines on our estate, making its debut in this unique 5-case lot. Fully mature now, fully integrated into the place where it lives, this block of Pinot noir has learned to capture the subtle fluctuations of cool and warm air currents that flow through the lower west side of our vineyard. We feel these currents when we walk there in the summer, as if we were walking into the sea, and we can taste them in this wine. ta s t in g n o te s This wine embodies everything we love about the 2014 vintage on our property: the bountiful fruit persistence that never spills over the edges of overripe, the coiled, sinewy acidity that gives the wine tension and energy, and the fine grain, gossamer tannins that cradle the wine through a long, promise filled finish. 40 w i n e r y i n fo r m a t ion Gnarly old vines, geologically complex hillside soils, and direct impact from Æolian winds all conspire to create highly energized wines with firm backbones, depth of character, and distinctive personalities. Nine different bottlings of estate grown Pinot noir and Chardonnay each year barely begin to tell the tale… Bethel Heights Vineyard was established in 1977 in the Eola-Amity Hills by brothers Ted and Terry Casteel and their partners Pat Dudley and Marilyn Webb. Over thirty years they grew the estate vineyards to 100 acres, but the original 50 acres of own-rooted vines they planted in the ‘70s continue to provide the backbone of Bethel Heights estate grown wines. In 2006, cousins Ben Casteel and Mimi Casteel took the helm at Bethel Heights. Tradition spiced with revolution is proving to be a recipe for ever-more-interesting wines. The impact of the warm growing season was tempered by cooling winds, resulting in grapes that matured slowly despite the heat. This unique blend was selected from two French oak barrels: one, a new Rousseau with Pommard, and the other once-filled with Dijon clone 777. The grapes were from reserve rows, farmed to 1.5 tons/acre for concentration. Unfined, gently filtered. ta s t in g n o te s Luscious and full bodied, yet gripping, this deep Pinot reflects the warm vintage, translated by a cool site. Aromas of dark red fruits and exotic spices. On the palate, the vineyard’s signature profile of dusty roses and wild blackberries is framed by an earthy elegance. The memorable finish showcases this graceful wine with smooth, supple tannins. 42 w i n e r y i n fo r m a t ion Anam Cara wines are handcrafted from grapes we grow and carefully farm in the Nicholas Estate Vineyard set in the Chehalem Mountains. We believe that giving the vineyard our daily attention encourages the best fruit possible – the basis for wines we are proud to share. At once you have every barrel in your cellar available, and you are not limited by price, volume, or style. Balance, the benchmark of great blending still applies. And the only other goal? “deliciousness”. We hope that we have captured the art of delicious in this unique auction bottling from the exceptional 2014 vintage. ta s t in g n o te s Bright, elegant, and powerful with sleek age worthy tannins focusing from the mid-palate through the very long fruit and pipe tobacco flavor driven finish. Sassafras, blueberry, rhubarb, and black cherry round out the nose while some of the many flavors on the palate include earth, herbs, European plum, leather and beetroot. w i n e r y i n fo r m a t ion Gran Moraine takes its name from the cataclysmic floods that occurred in the northern Willamette Valley of Oregon during the last ice age. As the flood waters receded, they sculpted the region, leaving a distinct pattern of small indentations or mini valleys (moraines)—much like the Côte d ‘Or in Burgundy. These outcroppings manifest themselves on our property in the Yamhill-Carlton AVA, where 220 acres are planted to Pinot noir and Chardonnay. 44 NOTES 45 — LOT# 21 — MOUTON NOIR WINES 2014 Lamb of God lot size 20 CASES ava WILLAMETTE VALLEY winemaker ANDRÉ HUESTON MACK HARVEST 9/19/14 BOTTLING 9/4/15 ALC 13.7% w i n e d e s c r ip t ion Lamb of God embodies the finest qualities from two of the most distinguished AVAs in the Willamette Valley: the boldness of the Eola-Amity Hills and the highly aromatic earthiness of the Dundee Hills. Since our philosophy on oak has been to use it as a seasoning agent and not a weapon, this wine is aged in 2-3 year barrels. ta s t in g n o te s Toothsome dark fruit and a silky, voluptuous mouthfeel are shepherded into this divine concoction. Plan to sacrifice bottle after bottle. w i n e r y i n fo r m a t ion Mouton Noir Wines, founded by iconoclastic sommelier André Hueston Mack in 2007, incorporates his trademark attitude and personal perspective on wine subculture. During the growing season, the region benefits from the temperature-moderating effect of the prevailing ocean breezes that flow through the Van Duzer Corridor. The vineyard is divided into 48 small blocks with diverse clones and rootstocks based on the aspects, slopes, and orientations of the vineyard’s beautiful rolling lands. These unique characteristics serve to complete Winemaker Gary Horner’s philosophy of producing small, single vineyard wines to achieve high-quality and unique interpretations of Oregon Pinot noir and Chardonnay. To date the vineyard is planted with 17.3 acres of Chardonnay and 103.4 acres of Pinot noir. The vineyard is 100% sustainably farmed certified by both the LIVE and Salmon Safe programs. Erath’s 2014 Barrel Auction cuvée showcases the magnificent structure and pure fruit intensity of Willakia’s Block 8, clone 667 situated on thin and slightly rocky soil of volcanic origin. Aged in French oak for over 13 months, the wine is equal proportions from a single new and a single two-year-old barrel from French coopers Cadus and Marsannay respectively. This wine represents Erath’s inaugural vintage of Pinot noir from the Willakia Vineyard. ta s t in g n o te s This ruby-hued, redolent beauty is bursting with aromas of bright, juicy cherries; freshly picked violets, and hints of toasted nuts that mingle with a pleasing meatiness. A mouthwatering palate of cranberry and pomegranate starts with tender silkiness, the zesty cherry finish lingering thanks to well integrated tannin and acidity. 48 w i n e r y i n fo r m a t ion Erath Winery, a pioneer of Oregon’s wine industry, has been instrumental in establishing the region as a world-class producer of Pinot noir. As the winery enters its fifth decade, Erath remains committed to crafting exceptional wines that reflect the brand’s outstanding reputation as well as the region’s rich history. Erath wines are crafted from a wide variety of vineyards, each unique in climate, elevation and soil structure. Winemaker Gary Horner follows a minimalist approach to winemaking and is respectful of the delicacy of Pinot noir. He focuses on showcasing its soft, fruit-forward characteristics, avoids over-extraction, and is judicious about barrel selection. Honoring his commitment to create high quality wines, he perfectly balances tradition with the latest winemaking technology. Planted in 1971, the vineyard now stretches over 200 acres among the picturesque foothills of Oregon’s Coast Range. This single barrel selection of Pinot noir is an exclusive blend of self-rooted Coury, Dijon 115 and Pommard clones, representing the best of Hyland Vineyard. The unique clusters used to make this wine were small enough to fit in the palm of a hand and were comprised of BB-sized berries. The individually-selected whole clusters were fermented in an open-top puncheon and aged in a single new French oak barrel for 14 months. The result is an extremely limited wine with a delicacy and transparency that is equally as rare as the clusters from which it was derived. In 2007, the Hyland Vineyard was acquired by Laurent Montalieu and Danielle Andrus Montalieu in partnership with John Niemeyer, who are working to optimize the existing vineyard quality and honor its past by introducing the first estate wines. For decades, the fruit from the vineyard has produced many award-winning wines from benchmark producers under their own labels, and this legacy continues today. ta s t in g n o te s Explosively perfumed scents of ripe red and dark berries, incense, potpourri, and exotic spices. Sappy, expansive, and seamless, offering sweet black raspberry and cherry-cola flavors with a strong floral pastille quality. Concentrated yet lively and precise, finishing with superb focus and length; supple tannins fold effortlessly into the wine’s intense fruit. 50 w i n e r y i n fo r m a t ion The historic Hyland Vineyard lies nestled in the foothills of the Oregon Coast Range near McMinnville, Oregon. First planted in 1971, Hyland Vineyard is one of Oregon’s oldest and largest vineyards, spanning over 200 acres. This vineyard has been, and continues to be, the source of fruit for many top scoring wines from some of Oregon’s most recognized producers. The boutique label of Hyland Estates showcases wines crafted exclusively from Hyland Vineyard grapes, including Pinot noir, Riesling, Chardonnay, and Gewürztraminer. The wine was selected from a ½ barrel of Seven Springs Vineyard Pinot noir, arguably one of the best sites in the Willamette Valley. The grapes come from Block 2 lower, a 1983 planting of own rooted vines. Walter Scott will bottle 135 cases of Seven Springs Vineyard Pinot noir in 2014. Cuvée Lucille was pulled from the best barrel, a new Taransaud 114 liter barrel. ta s t in g n o te s Brilliantly red fruited with pure raspberry, red cherry, and wild berries that are layered with floral notes of peony and lilac. Underneath runs a current of matsutake mushroom and fresh turned earth with hints of cardamom and white pepper. The wine walks a tight line between broad power and fine-tuned elegance, with a stunning finish. 52 w i n e r y i n fo r m a t ion Walter Scott is a small winery, founded in 2008 by partners Ken Pahlow and Erica Landon after years of living, studying, and working within the Oregon wine industry. Our focus is to produce wines of elegance and purity, while conveying transparency of site and character of vintage. To celebrate that milestone, we created this unique cuvée that draws on many years of experience, the generosity of the vintage, and four distinct vineyards and AVAs. The wine’s acid and tannin structure come largely from Wädenswil grown at La Colina Vineyard in the Dundee Hills; Ribbon Ridge Vineyard Pommard contributes depth and richness; Dukes Family Vineyard (Eola-Amity) 777 lengthened and lifted the wine, while Hyland Vineyard (McMinnville) Wädenswil added mid-palate depth without, counter-intuitively, seeming to create a more structured wine. Average vine age is 16 years. Unfined and unfiltered. ta s t in g n o te s This is a wine of richness, yes, but with requisite tension, concentration without weight, precise balance, and detailed length. It will be delicious young but should develop gracefully in the cellar over five to seven years. 54 w i n e r y i n fo r m a t ion Sourcing fruit from select Oregon and Washington vineyards, Andrew Rich has been crafting distinctive wines in his adopted state since 1995. Along with Pinot noir, Rhône Valley varietals, including Syrah, Roussanne, and Mourvedre, take pride of place, though perhaps Andrew is best known for his seductive Gewürztraminer dessert wine. Both barrels are from the Ayoub Estate Vineyard. After several blending trials to create the perfect blend from these two barrels, the final blend was 75% from one barrel and 25% from the other. ta s t in g n o te s Dark and gorgeously perfumed with dried rose petals, crushed berries, and a mix of exotic spices. The palate is broad and bright, bursting with dried cherries, blueberries, pomegranate with hints of nutmeg, allspice, and stony minerality. The lush and velvety finish envelops your palate and lingers endlessly. This is a beautiful wine with great depth and rewards patience, has the potential to age for 15 years. 56 w i n e r y i n fo r m a t ion The Ayoub Vineyard is located in the heart of the red hills of Dundee. The steep sloped southeast facing four-acre site, with its red clay volcanic soil, is ideal for producing complex-flavored Pinot noir. A wine of purity and charm; wishing to attract attention – but not necessarily show it. After tasting all 281 barrels from the 2014 vintage, winemaker James Frey selected just one from each of our three estate vineyards. The cuvée is a blend of these three extraordinary barrels – the result is a wine that marries the power and spice of the Ribbon Ridge estate, the elegance of the Wichmann Dundee estate, and the savory qualities of the Coast Range estate. After 16 months in barrel, the wine was racked and bottled by hand in January of 2016. ta s t in g n o te s Shimmering ruby garnet in color, with aromas of cranberry, cherry, sandalwood, and Asian five spice. The palate bursts with ripe cherries, blackcurrants, and bittersweet cocoa, layered with seductive soft floral notes, rose petal, herbal tea, forest floor, toasted coconut, and exotic spice. Founder James Frey is also the winemaker, crafting Trisaetum’s wines in our winery located at the Ribbon Ridge Estate outside Newberg. The winery’s state-of-the-art construction features a cold room to chill fruit before processing, a nine-stage fruit sorting system, gravity flow design, and a subterranean barrel cave that allows James to blend Old World tradition with New World innovation. Both LIVE and Salmon Safe certified, the vineyard is dry farmed, taking advantage of the natural full exposure to the marine layers coming off the Coast Range. The soil profile of this lot is 80% Jory, with the remainder comprised of Gelderman, Witzel, and Yamhill. This wine started its journey 100% whole berry with an extended cold soak, and onto a long and steady native primary fermentation before racking dirty (with lees) to barrel. 70% new ERMITAGE French oak barrels were used for this selection. The barrels are unique. I use 265L cigar shaped barrels, providing a longer bed of lees for the wine to rest on which adds more volume and structure to the mid palate. The barrels are all steam bent, light toast, 36 month seasoned with a combination of customized forest blends – primarily crafted from the Bertranges, Tronçais, and Allier forests. ta s t in g n o te s The 2014 La Colina Vineyard Pinot is a wonderful example of where 777 can go in a vintage with ample sunshine. The fruit is dark, ripe, and opulent – the wine is rich and full bodied. The nose expresses mountain blueberry and huckleberry with hints of lavender and mocha. The palate shows ripe black cherry, candied fig, and a touch of ginger spice. Round and voluptuous with polished tannins smoothing out the finish. 60 w i n e r y i n fo r m a t ion Rocky Point wines are crafted with a passion for preserving clone specific, single vineyard designated Pinot noir. The wines are over-vintaged in custom-crafted French oak barrels offering up age-worthy, well-structured Pinot noir. Vineyard sites are carefully selected based on grower reputation, appellation, hillside aspect, and clonal variety. The project was initiated by Amy Lee, who spent more than 10 years working in the wine industry internationally before coming home to the Pacific Northwest to produce Pinot noir of great substance and character. NOTES 61 — LOT# 29 — SOLÉNA ESTATE 2014 Single Barrel Selection lot size 10 CASES vineyard name DOMAINE DANIELLE LAURENT ava YAMHILL-CARLTON HARVEST 9/18/14 winemaker LAURENT MONTALIEU BOTTLING 12/12/15 ALC 13.6% w i n e d e s c r ip t ion This single-barrel selection of Pinot noir comes from the Domaine Danielle Laurent wedding vineyard. This vineyard was planted in May of 2000 when Laurent Montalieu and Danielle Andrus Montalieu purchased an 80-acre estate as their wedding gift to each other and registered with premium nurseries for Pinot noir vines as wedding gifts. The vineyard has been Biodynamically farmed since the second leaf. As the vines get older the wines seem to become more complex and inviting. This vineyard is a field blend of clones including Pommard, Wädenswil and Dijon clones 115, 667, 777, and 828. The Burgundian clones produce an intricate array of flavors from which we create this single-barrel Pinot noir blend. The blocks were closely monitored as harvest approached, and the picking date was chosen based on the flavors and harvested by hand. The fruit was then gravity-fed directly into tank. Using barrels from a variety of coopers, the wine was aged for 14 months in 100% French oak. The wine was bottled unfiltered and unfined. ta s t in g n o te s The wine showcases lovely floral and tea aromas framed by rich mocha notes. Very fruity on the palate, it is spiced with flavors of violets, raspberry, and vanilla, ripe tannins and minerality. 62 w i n e r y i n fo r m a t ion In May 2002, Laurent Montalieu and Danielle Andrus Montalieu launched Soléna by releasing their first bottling. Soléna is the combination of the Spanish and French words Solana and Soleil, celebrating the sun and the moon, and the name that Laurent and Danielle gave to their daughter. Soléna Estate began as a way to explore winemaking with other varietals grown in neighboring appellations while the family’s young Domaine Danielle Laurent vineyard in the Yamhill-Carlton District matured. King Estate also sources fruit from sustainably-farmed vineyards within the Willamette Valley with great clonal diversity: more than 16 Pinot noir and four Pinot gris clones. Each lot from each vineyard is fermented and aged separately. King Estate’s mission is to produce wines of consistently exceptional quality through meticulous fruit selection, impeccable winemaking practices and judicious blending. NOTES 65 — LOT# 31 — ANTICA TERRA 2014 Alder Creek lot size 5 CASES vineyard name ANTICA TERRA ava EOLA-AMITY HILLS winemaker MAGGIE HARRISON HARVEST 10/22/14 BOTTLING 5/10/16 ALC 14.0% w i n e d e s c r ip t ion This singular selection represents the indelible signature of the Antica Terra Vineyard in its purest form. Our inspiration came from Burgundy where small producers would have often only one barrel from a small plot of Grand Cru vines and couldn’t bear to top it up with village level wine. With nothing to break down for topping, they used small rocks to displace the wine, raise the level and eliminate the headspace in the barrel. We hiked through a friend’s property to a riverbed at the base of Mt. Hood and picked buckets of rocks from the clear, newly-melted glacial runoff. This barrel was topped in this way and thus remains the only wine ever made purely and wholly from Antica Terra vineyard. w in e in fo r m a t ion Antica Terra is an 11-acre vineyard located on a rocky hillside in the Eola-Amity Hills AVA. The first vines were planted here in 1989 in a clearing within the oak savannah. The geology of the site is extremely unusual. In most of the region, vineyards are planted in the relatively deep, geologically young soils left behind by either the Missoula floods or the volcanic events that formed the Cascade Range. In this place, the remains of a far older prehistoric seabed rise to the surface, leaving the vines to struggle, without topsoil, amongst a fractured mixture of sandstone sown with fossilized oyster shells. 66 NOTES 67 — LOT# 32 — BROOKS 2014 Single Barrel Selection lot size 10 CASES vineyard names BROOKS ESTATE VINEYARD & CRANNELL winemaker CHRISTOPHER WILLIAMS ava EOLA-AMITY HILLS HARVEST 9/19 + 9/27/14 BOTTLING 5/8/16 ALC 13.8% w i n e d e s c r ip t ion Situated near the crest of Eola Hills Road at around 700 feet, lies an iconic pairof vineyards in the Eola-Amity Hills: Brooks Estate and Crannell Vineyards.Pioneers of the Oregon wine industry, Don Byard and Dick Crannell, plantedtheir vineyards in the mid-1970s and 1980s adjacent to each other in the hillsbehind the village of Amity, Oregon. These old vines benefit from deep roots involcanic Nekia and Jory soils, while the foliage is swept with cool evening windsblown in from the Pacific Ocean. Blended together for the first time in history, these two vineyards create a transparent expression of the unique Eola Hills terroir, imparting into the wine deep red-fruited flavors, bursting with acidity, with a smokiness evocative of the lava flows in which these soils were created. ta s t in g n o te s This wine has a smoky meaty/charcuterie nose, deep red currant/raspberry fruit and a pithy citrus, bright mid palate, with a long, spicy and savory herbaceous finish. Complex and very age worthy. 68 w i n e r y i n fo r m a t ion Founded in 1998, Brooks is a reflection of the visionary Portland native, Jimi Brooks. His reverence for the land and vines made him a practitioner of organic and Biodynamic farming. The great respect for vineyard individuality and mastery of blending allowed his wines to achieve the greatest depth, flavors, and balance. While Jimi is no longer with us, his dynamic spirit lives on through his wines, family, and friends. As new chapters unveil, we will be steadily guided with the legacies that Jimi left: his strong commitment to organic and Biodynamic farming in the vineyards, gentle approach to winemaking, excitement for future harvests, and endlessly promoting how beautiful Pinot noir and Riesling can be grown and produced in Oregon. Planting a 12-acre vineyard adjacent to his Beaux Frères Upper Terrace vineyard, Michael, with his partner Carey, began a project of their own: Sequitur. The new vineyard, born from an old tree farm, and nurtured with Biodynamic and organic farming principles, promises to be a new star in the Ribbon Ridge hills of Yamhill County. This auction lot was produced with 15 different clones, 10% whole cluster native fermentation, and aged in tight grain light toasted French oak 60-gallon barrels. Be the first to try First Born, Sequitur’s inaugural vintage. Proprietors: Michael Etzel and Carey Critchlow ta s t in g n o te s Mineral infused wild cherry aromatics with a rich, full mouthfeel. 70 w i n e r y i n fo r m a t ion This journey began with our purchase of a 60-acre Douglas fir tree farm in 2010 from a retired school teacher and neighbor, Frank Dummer, a meticulous man of principle. We planted a 12-acre Pinot noir vineyard directly adjacent to Beaux Frères’ prized Upper Terrace. What makes this vineyard unique, other than having 17 clones of Pinot noir planted very densely (3630 plants per acre), is the forest of Douglas fir enclosing three sides of the vineyard, giving this gentle south slope protection from winds and preserving its unique terroir. The wine is made at Beaux Frères winery by Michael Etzel and his son Mike, and this is our inaugural release. NOTES 71 — LOT# 34 — PATRICIA GREEN CELLARS 2014 Ludicrous lot size 5 CASES vineyard names FREEDOM HILL, DURANT & OLENIK ava WILLAMETTE VALLEY winemakers PATTY GREEN & JIM ANDERSON BOTTLING 9/17/15 ALC 14.2% w i n e d e s c r ip t ion This wine manages to explore a range of different aspects that are all important to our winery. It was assembled from incredibly small portions of various barrels from the vineyards listed and a vineyard we are calling Mysterious (we had to sign a nondisclosure agreement to secure the purchase of the fruit). These vineyards range from volcanic to marine sedimentary soils which will bring certain site attributes to the table. They span the three most common clones in our cellar: Pommard, Dijon 115 and Wädenswil. Lastly, they span the range of differing fermentations that we do from 100% de-stemmed, through 15% whole cluster, and all the way up to 100% whole cluster fermentations. All these elements cloistered together in tiny quantities make for an incredibly unique experience. We have endeavored to show the terroirs of appellations, vineyards, and individual blocks of vineyards. A Pinot noir of this particular style is a practice that we usually do not engage in, making it interesting, challenging and a rare, rare wine from our cellar. ta s t in g n o te s We have tried to bring about the aromatic and textural components of Pinot noir that we find particularly appealing and alluring. We like the earth, the inside of a wolverine den, the water from a stalactite, the air in an old house’s cellar, the rocks at the high point of the bank of a river, the underside of tree bark, and things of this nature. There is an interplay of earth covered fruits meshed into the forceful and dominant structure. There is enough mid-palate suppleness that the transition to the back palate tannins allows the darkly fruited elements to transition backwards, making for early drinking interest while, ultimately, allowing for long term ageability and complexity, truly the destination of great Pinot noirs. 72 w i n e r y i n fo r m a t ion All of our wines are made by encouraging indigenous yeasts to do the primary fermentations, and we add nothing to the wines to spur on the secondary fermentations. Our wines see minimal amounts of sulphur, only upon arriving at the winery and when they are being assembled for bottling. There is no fining, filtration, or use of machines to concentrate or artificially alter the wines. Our vineyards are all organically or sustainably farmed and our wines are organic. These are naturally made wines that are intended to bring out the characteristics of the places in which they were grown. A blend crafted with a playful spirit of secrecy, to be pondered and speculated upon, but never to be disclosed. This wine is enticing as a ‘one of a kind’ collector’s item, enjoyable now or over its long life. May every bottle create a memorable experience of discovery, along with Lavinea’s Single Vineyard offerings. ta s t in g n o te s Brilliant and deep ruby in color with a purple edge, this youthful Pinot noir opens up with a wonderful core of fresh cherry notes, poised and elegant. This is followed by a hint of rosemary and mixed forest fruits wrapped with soft floral notes; dusty rose petals, and black raspberry. Open and generous with purity of fruit and great definition. Smooth entry on the palate, yet elegant and lively, with lovely cherry notes, the silky textures fill the mid palate. The finish is unusually long and sustained, with stony mineral notes. Only 5 cases produced. Drink now through 2025. 74 w i n e r y i n fo r m a t ion Building on years of critical acclaim, focusing on some of the oldest, renowned vineyard sources in the Willamette Valley, Isabelle Meunier and Greg Ralston are proud to announce the launch of their collaboration, Lavinea, producing wines that are crafted to be the highest expression and purest voice of site-specific terroir. After a long career working with Burgundian varietals in New Zealand, Burgundy, and Oregon, Isabelle has distilled her many vintages of experience into a clear path focused on revealing and sharing the greatness that exists in Chardonnay and Pinot noir in Oregon. Greg has, over the last two decades, managed and guided several of the most celebrated wine estates in California, Burgundy, Italy, and Oregon – some embryonic and some grand. About two weeks ahead of normal, the early June bloom continued with fantastic weather, leading to an above average fruit set. This required us to meticulously thin our vineyards in order to capture dense, vibrant fruit flavors. The summer was quite warm, seeing a near record number of 90º+ days. Lone Star Vineyard is southeast facing, at 250-400 ft. elevation, capturing all of the early morning sunshine peaking up over the Cascades, leading to elegantly concentrated Pinot noir. The fruit was hand-picked and chilled overnight, before being destemmed into 1.5-ton, open-top fermenters. After 6 days of cold soaking, the fermenters were hand plunged twice per day for two weeks, then allowed to rest for another week before gentle pressing and aging for 16 months in French oak barrels, of which 40% were new. ta s t in g n o te s Bright raspberry, dark cherry, spicy floral, black tea woven into a creamy, deep frame. Then there is the handful that get a ‘++’. Those with this seemingly simple but meaningful distinction go into this blend. This is a tiny lot Brian blended featuring the old vines of Wirtz vineyard. This is our estate vineyard and brings elegance and complex tannins that Brian balanced with the bright effusive fruit of the slightly younger vines of Kalita and Beize vineyards. ta s t in g n o te s Cherry, tobacco, and cola with perfect tannin acid balance allow flavors to build without becoming heavy. Balance and depth of earth, fruit, and acidity are hallmarks of the Wirtz vineyard. This wine has a tannin component that adds a necessary texture/dimension to this already great vintage. It’s beautiful now but will continue to evolve. 78 w i n e r y i n fo r m a t ion Big Table Farm is the collaborative effort of Brian Marcy and Clare Carver. With 18 soil types and 10 clones of Pinot noir, we are always amazed by the level of complexity that is produced from this single parcel of land that we call ‘Revana Vineyard’. For this exclusive bottling our winemaking team of Bryan Weil and Lynn Penner-Ash selected their favorite barrel from the 1 block that they felt produced the most textured, elegant, and balanced wines of 2014. Block 6 (100% Wädenswil clone) stood out as being the best – only 6 cases produced. ta s t in g n o te s A deep ruby color foreshadows dark fruit tones of ripe black cherry and plum with hints of cinnamon, vanilla, and clove. On the palate the wine’s sweet core is complimented by chewy tannins and a long rounded finish. We anticipate this wine to age gracefully for the next 7-10 years. 80 w i n e r y i n fo r m a t ion Alexana Winery was born of Dr. Madaiah Revana’s love of the great wines of Burgundy. His search for an ideal region ended in Oregon’s Willamette Valley, where he found an 80-acre parcel of land perfect for growing Pinot noir. True to the appellation, the Revana Vineyard possesses an incredibly diverse and complex series of soils and exposures, with 18 soil types spread over a combination of rolling hills, steep slopes and rugged terrain. The soils are primarily sedimentary silt and stone as well as volcanic stone and some clay. The vineyard has grown to 58 acres and is farmed meticulously utilizing sustainable farming methods and cover crops which provide soil nutrients, erosion control, and water competition. Our careful hand-selection of fruit for this cuvée lends even greater distinction to an already rare wine, unavailable outside of this auction. The most complete of all of REX HILL’s estates, the Biodynamically certified Jacob-Hart Vineyard, comprises the majority of the blend. With 13 distinct soil types, this vineyard is truly a crown jewel site, highlighting the diversity that the myriad of soils in the Willamette Valley can give, yet all within one vineyard boundary. The Jacob-Hart Estate is famous for producing wines that are complete and complex with tremendous balance, allowing them to age gracefully for years. The secondary composition of the blend comes from the well-known Shea Vineyard which is known for its rich, ripe fruit and resulting opulent wines. ta s t in g n o te s Notes of cinnamon, blackberry, mulberry, dark cherries, raspberries, and plum greet the nose with hints of red licorice, paprika, honeycomb, and perfectly ripe blue fruits. Darker, more complex, sexy aromas arise as the wine opens like smoke and pouch tobacco. On the palate, the wine is complex, succulent, and balanced with well-integrated, textured, and layered tannins. The wine finishes with black currantand spice flavors that last on the palate almost forever. This special cuvée from REX HILL is rich, supple, and perfectly balanced representing the pinnacle of the amazing 2014 Oregon vintage. 82 w i n e r y i n fo r m a t ion REX HILL is one of the original LIVE certified wineries and the only winery in the world to be a certified B Corp at the time of certification (May 2014). The families of A to Z Wineworks bought REX HILL in 2006, reducing production 77% to focus on the highest quality fruit in the Willamette Valley. The commitment to excellence extends to farming following organic and Biodynamic principles; year-round responsiveness to site, vintage, and climate; careful hand-selection of clusters; and hand-sorting at harvest. The resulting balanced, complex, structured wines offer pleasure young while rewarding aging. It is a 50/50 blend of Zena West block 1A clone 114 which was fermented as a 100% whole cluster lot and foot trodden twice a day for cap management by our Australian intern Emma; and Zena East block 6 clone 667 destemmed and fermented in small barriques with one head removed. Extremely limited quantities of both of these wines were produced, and the creation of a small auction blend using both components is the only possible way to make a wine such as this available. ta s t in g n o te s Beautifully ripe red fruit, intermingled with briary blackberry, and exotic aromas such as sandalwood and tamarind round out the nose. Hedonistic richness coats the palate up front framed by a solid core of tannin and acidity. This is followed by layers of fruit on the mid palate leading toward a finish so delicious I want to weep. 84 w i n e r y i n fo r m a t ion Our winemaker Shane Moore, has been working with well-known Oregon winemaker Tony Rynders for the past few years to craft our four Pinot noirs under the Zena Crown label. They are sourcing from various blocks throughout the Zena Crown Vineyard, which is located at the southern end of the Eola-Amity Hills appellation in the Willamette Valley. Ocean breezes push through the Van Duzer Corridor in the Coastal Range, maintaining a cool climate. This combined with the shallow, well-drained volcanic soils, make the vineyard a premiere growing site for Pinot noir. We have a longstanding relationship with Dick Shea and have been making wine from this five-acre block of Dijon 777 on the east side of the Shea property for ten years. We produce a small amount of Shea Pinot noir each year for our wine club with limited availability in our tasting room, so this is a unique opportunity. Shea Vineyard is renowned for big, concentrated dark fruit character. Elk Cove’s take on Shea tends to be less aggressive with ripe but refined tannins for a more up-front red-fruit profile. Elk Cove’s delicate Pinot noir fruit undergoes gentle handling through our gravity flow system. This allows us to achieve the elegance, texture, and luscious quality that are the hallmarks of exquisite Pinot noir. This Shea lot was fermented in two small, temperature controlled steel tanks, one entirely destemmed and the other 90% whole-cluster. Hand punched down twice daily then aged in barrel for 10 months in 35% new French Oak. ta s t in g n o te s Brilliant red with refined jasmine tea and triple berry aromatics. Delicately concentrated and juicy on the palate with loads of red cherry fruit leading to a lengthy finish of refined tannins. 86 w i n e r y i n fo r m a t ion At Elk Cove Vineyards we produce wines from outstanding sites in Oregon’s Northern Willamette Valley. Our focus is on Pinot noir and cool climate white varietals like Pinot gris, Pinot blanc, and Riesling. At our winery we employ gravity flow and gentle handling to protect the inherent qualities of our estate-grown fruit. Through site selection and meticulous vine management we achieve concentration and depth of flavor in the vineyard. We employ practices that reflect our focus on sustainability, including a solar energy project at the winery, organic farming methods in the vineyards and bio-diesel for all farm vehicles. Since 1979, Elk Cove Vineyards has produced single vineyard Pinot noirs, reserve bottlings available in limited quantities. Originally destined for planting to another clone, misplaced labels on the cuttings made this vineyard block a happy accident indeed. The addition of darker, more earthy blending elements from the Wädenswil, Dijon 114 and 115 blocks brings additional depth and complexity. The French barrels were never racked after filling, resting quietly for 17 months until bottling in February, 2016. ta s t in g n o te s Rich dark fruit on the nose and on the palate. Plum and black cherry predominate. Broad tannins, with elements of brown spice and cinnamon, finishing with some pleasing acidity and a bit of earth and forest floor up the backside. 88 w i n e r y i n fo r m a t ion It’s about vineyard site. That’s the belief of geologist/winemaker Mike Hallock. Carabella Vineyard produces only estate-grown wines from vines planted on a unique hillside vineyard site, which is the culmination of a 12-year search for a location combining the best criteria of top-quality Oregon and French terroir. Trained as a winemaker in Colorado (really!), Mike brought his tanks and equipment over the mountains on a flatbed truck for the first vintage in 1998. Pinot noir is Carabella’s primary focus, with seven different clonal blocks fermented separately, then blended prior to bottling to exhibit the complex potential of the vineyard. Modest use of new French oak places the focus on the wine’s purity of fruit and elegant style. NOTES 89 — LOT# 43 — J.K. CARRIERE WINES 2014 Le Choix de St. Dolores lot size 5 CASES vineyard name ST. It is the first ever release of a single-vineyard bottling from St. Dolores Estate, our exceptional hilltop vineyard. We have been playing humble pie, until now. This wine is not for everyone. It resides at the highest end of the acid spectrum for domestic Pinot noir, JKC’s signature move. That linear core necessitated the extraction of abundant fruit ripened to top-dead-center and winding (polymerization) of lip-smacking tannins to achieve balance. This wine well represents us, from roots to glass, and we’re ecstatic. ta s t in g n o te s We love complexity and age-ability, and adjectives as much as the next guy, but for the big picture this wine presents as: Pure…Persistent…Bombastic…Smooth…Acidic…Cherry. We can furnish you a pen for more adjectives. The winemaking nuts and bolts: wild-yeast fermented in three-ton stainless for 20 days with five days of punch-down and pump-over thereafter including temperatures nearing 100 degrees. It was then racked, settled overnight, and in this case, barreled to a single, once-filled Remond Allier French oak barrel. There it went through wild malo-lactic and light sulfuring and then pulled as a yet-to-be-bottled barrel sample at 18 months. 90 w i n e r y i n fo r m a t ion Visit our little island in the sky atop the red rock and cobble of Parrett Mountain, where our small and smart winery beckons. From the beginning, we have worked to establish a distinctive profile with a complex structure one can clearly recognize as Dusky Goose. The Dusky Goose 2014 Barrel Auction Cuvée is a selection of owner John Carter’s favorite blocks of Pinot noir from both our Rambouillet and Fennwood Vineyards, producing a superb cuvée with wine from two AVAs - Dundee Hills and Yamhill-Carlton. This unique cuvée introduces the Fennwood Vineyard, John and Linda Carter’s vineyard located in the Yamhill-Carlton AVA. This vineyard site was selected by Willamette Valley founder David Adelsheim and planted with his vision to match each soil series and elevation change to a specific variety, clone, and rootstock. This careful planning and execution led to a very complex vineyard layout that enhances the potential success of each block. The Rambouillet Vineyard, is ideally located in the Dundee Hills. The location was selected for its optimal slope, perfect elevations for ripening fruit, and 100% Jory soil. Rambouillet Vineyard is farmed with the sensibilities of low-impact viticulture and a commitment to low-yields, making an authentic, limited-production wine possible without compromising the integrity of the fruit, vines, or the land. ta s t in g n o te s Upon tasting, there is a seamless structure with a balance of freshness and tannins, with a purity of fruit and juicy mouthfeel. The interplay of both vineyards harmonizes in a velvety soft Pinot noir, while infusing vibrant aromas of blackberry cobbler, smoked bacon, and Asian plum. On the palate we found a thread of Madagascar vanilla throughout and a juicy litheness on a focused yet delicate palate. There is a savoriness and bright liveliness on the structured finish. 96 w i n e r y i n fo r m a t ion Dusky Goose features the winemaking talent of Lynn Penner-Ash to produce a velvety-soft Pinot noir from low-yield Willamette Valley vineyards featuring established vines, and a diversified clonal selection. The palate is rich with red berries, dried herbs, marmalade, and salted licorice. The finish carries on with mouthwatering juiciness. Elegant, understated but with a broad palate. 98 w i n e r y i n fo r m a t ion Helioterra Wines is a small, artisan producer of Northwest wines made in Oregon’s Eola-Amity Hills. Steve Doerner has taken a single barrel from each lot to craft this special bottling. After tasting through all of the estate fruit, Steve has chosen one new French oak François Frères barrel from Jessie Vineyard. Hand picked and hand sorted on September 11, 2014, this barrel is from the Pommard clone of Pinot noir and fermented using 54% whole-clusters and native yeast. Pressed to barrel on September 30, 2015, the wine was aged for sixteen months, fined in late January and bottled in late February. Our second barrel of the blend comes from the oldest vines on the Cristom Estate. Originally planted in 1982, this Wädenswil block of Pinot noir was hand picked on September 15, 2014. Fermented using 49% whole clusters and native yeasts, the grapes were pressed to barrel on October 11, 2015, and aged in a one-year-old French oak François Frères barrel for sixteen months. ta s t in g n o te s A classic Willamette Valley Pinot noir in the Cristom style. This wine shows a lot of fruit and spice on the nose with hints of minerality, earth, and rose petals. A slight briaryness from the whole clusters shows up behind the highly perfumed aromas. The palate is full and ripe with fine, mouth-coating tannins that persist into a long, balanced finish. Steve has been quoted in the past having said that “some wines will blow you away and knock your socks off; and then there are wines that will slide your socks off gently.” This 2014 Cristom Pinot noir is the kind of wine that will do exactly that – “slide your socks off slowly.” 102 w i n e r y i n fo r m a t ion The development of Cristom Vineyards is the result of a twenty-plus-year collaboration between an engineer, a winemaker, and a farmer. Founder Paul Gerrie hired Cristom’s winemaker Steve Doerner and Vineyard Manager Mark Feltz in 1992. Together since day one, they have consistently produced masterful and expressive Pinot noirs. Our winemaking philosophy begins with respect for our land and estate vines, and the natural process of fermentation. The vineyards and winery are Certified Sustainable by Low Input Viticulture & Enology (LIVE) and are thoughtfully and meticulously farmed with a focus on quality. With minimal intervention during the winemaking process, Steve guides the wines from vineyard to bottle, producing the ultimate expressions of the stellar fruit Mark grows every vintage. It was the seventh vineyard planted in the Willamette Valley. Their first real block of Pinot noir – 2.4 acres – went in two years later. This original Adelsheim vineyard is now known as Quarter Mile Lane. Its location, high on the south slope of the Chehalem Mountains AVA, has turned out to be unique in the world. Its soils derive from a great basaltic landslide, with boulders and clays that may give these Pinot noirs their most unusual trait – they live to a truly remarkable age. The Adelsheim contribution to Willamette, The Pinot noir Barrel Auction, is the winery’s first single block wine, 2014 Quarter Mile Lane, Pinot noir - Block One. It is a magical wine, extracted from the two best barrels of the Adelsheims’ oldest block of Pinot noir. Just ten cases were produced. ta s t in g n o te s Aromas: rose petal, red raspberry, wild red cherry, white pepper, floral, hints of warm, baking spices (nutmeg and cardamom), cigar box, cedar bark. Mouth flavors: exceedingly complex – pure red fruit, raspberry seed, and cherry pit, plus most of the same descriptors used for the aroma. Textures: silky tannins, firm structure, elegant, long, lingering, but lithe finish. 106 w i n e r y i n fo r m a t ion Adelsheim Vineyard was established during a different time in America, when anti-establishment fervor permitted a German major and an artist with little money to purchase 19 acres, plant a vineyard and dream of creating great wines in Oregon. We produce elegant and restrained wines with balance, structure, and vibrant fruit qualities. By staying true to our place and honoring the natural characteristics of our land, we’ve helped change the world’s view about the production of world-class wines in the Willamette Valley. Gilgamesh journeys to Siduri seeking the wine of eternal life but is rebutted, given this advice instead, “As for you, Gilgamesh, fill your belly with good things; day and night, night and day, dance and be merry, feast and rejoice. Let your clothes be fresh, bathe yourself in water, cherish the little child that holds your hand, and make your wife happy in your embrace; for this too is the lot of man.” Produced in this same spirit, for this special “The Alewife” Pinot noir, we’ve gone back to our earliest version of Oregon Pinot noir, back in 1995, taking fruit from the same sections of vineyard that we used to create that first Siduri Oregon Pinot noir. This is a one-of-a-kind offering – the owner of this wine will take home a 2014 Siduri Pinot noir that will not be found anywhere else. ta s t in g n o te s Siduri’s 2014 The Alewife Pinot noir combines own-rooted Pinot noir, non-irrigated 20+ year old vines, and hands-on winemaking to produce a compelling Pinot noir. The wine is a combination of red and lighter black fruits. These fruit flavors are complemented by the use of some whole clusters in the ferment, adding an element of forest floor to the nose. The wine is rich, largely due to the giving nature of the 2014 vintage, and yet retains a sense of elegance and crisp acidity. The Alewife Pinot noir is a compelling drink currently but should age and improve for several years to come. 114 w i n e r y i n fo r m a t ion We believe that great wine is made in the vineyard. Only with great grapes can we produce great wines. To this end, we purchase the majority of our fruit by the acre rather than by the ton. We believe in minimal intervention winemaking that promotes, rather than overshadows the work we do in the vineyard. Most importantly, we believe that wine should be a pleasure to drink. If you don’t like the way a wine tastes, what’s the point? Siduri Pinot noirs are made to be enjoyed with good friends and good food. Drawing from his three decades of experience working with four of Burgundy’s grands crus and ten of its premiers crus, Jean-Nicolas selected Bishop Creek Vineyard for the character and complexity of the wines it has produced. With a range of elevations from 270 to 600 feet, this steeply sloped hillside vineyard features tightly spaced, own-rooted Pinot noir vines that were planted in 1988 and 1990. With more than a quarter century of age, these vines yield an intense and multifaceted wine. For this special lot, Jean-Nicolas and Associate Winemaker Tracy Kendall selected the barrels of Pinot noir that most eloquently express the beauty of Bishop Creek’s terroir. ta s t in g n o te s This wine is perfumed with notes of bright, Bing cherry, ripe raspberry, and fresh loamy soil. Through exacting and simultaneously delicate winemaking, Jean-Nicolas has unlocked the soft tannins, elegant structure, and lengthy finish that has made his family’s estate in Vosne-Romanée world famous. With that said, this wine is proudly a Willamette Valley Pinot, with all the density and ageability that one expects from the 2014 vintage. It was bottled unfined and unfiltered. 116 w i n e r y i n fo r m a t ion Nicolas-Jay is the story of a three-decade friendship between famed Burgundian winemaker Jean-Nicolas Méo and visionary music entrepreneur Jay Boberg, and their shared love of Oregon Pinot noir. It is also the story of their desire to build something lasting together, while creating a distinctive expression of great Willamette Valley Pinot noir. At Nicolas-Jay, this is achieved by applying viticultural and winemaking experience gained from working with the grands crus of Burgundy to the finest grapes from Oregon. This includes fruit from the older vines of Nicolas-Jay’s own organically farmed Bishop Creek Vineyard on the hillsides of the Yamhill-Carlton appellation, as well as grapes from other top Willamette Valley vineyards, including Nysa, Momtazi and Zenith. From this fruit, Jean-Nicolas, Jay and talented Associate Winemaker Tracy Kendall make expressive wines that convey the special character of Oregon Pinot noir. We farm 42 distinct parcels on these three blue-ribbon properties and have selected the very best of each portion for this Pinot noir. The 2014 growing season was nothing less than spectacular – maybe a oncein-a-lifetime vintage. In our twenty-eight years of making Willamette Valley wines, it’s challenging to recall a more perfect season. It was, however, a warm to hot vintage, which can require a more, say, civilized and restrained approach to the winemaking. Taking note of the potential of the grapes to become overripe (read: raisins), we picked our fruit with an eye towards a balance of delicious fruit expression, natural acidity, and evenly formed tannin development. We think you’ll find this wine shows ebullient fruit but also has elements of restraint and finesse, which will assist the wine’s longevity in the cellar. ta s t in g n o te s Bursting with red fruits and spices on the nose, this wine shows the flashiness of the vintage but also a refined sensibility on the palate. Being born of 2014, our Pinot noir can be enjoyed upon release, but also has the requisite structure to be cellared for 15 years. Enjoy. 122 w i n e r y i n fo r m a t ion Wendy and Don Lange founded their estate winery in 1987 and produced 1,000 cases with their first vintage. Every once in awhile you run across a wine that somehow combines density and power with elegance and a sense of weightlessness. We know them when we taste them but they are rare and hard to describe. The normal fruit profiles and tasting notes simply do not apply – they must be felt to be understood, tasted to be appreciated. This wine is larger than life while at the same time seeming to be lighter than air. That is why it has garnered the moniker “Zeppelin” around the winery. They are dense, dimensional, and rich with flavor and extract. These Pinot noirs emphasize weight with good acidity, layered flavors, well concentrated fruit, and terroir specific flavors of dark, almost dried flowers with a rich forest-floor, morel, truffle undertone. The Shea Pinot noirs I have produced have consistently out-lasted wines from other sites. Shea Vineyard is located in the Yamhill-Carlton AVA. The grapes for this wine come from two blocks: Block 6 faces southeast on a hillside of shallow sedimentary soil at an elevation of 450’ to 500’ planted with Pommard and 115. The Terrace Block is a very steep southwest slope planted in 2002 with the Pommard clone. The de-stemmed grapes were fermented in two Burgundy oak fermenters with no SO2, allowing the fermentations to proceed naturally. After gentle pressing and settling, the wine aged in French oak barrels, 28% of which were new, for 16 months before bottling by gravity and without fining. This wine is a blend of the five best barrels and represents the best wine we produced in 2014. It is carefully selected to most clearly express the terroir of the site, the unique qualities of the vintage, and ageability. We produced 11 cases. ta s t in g n o te s Shea Pinot noir has a broad range of red and dark red fruits, a distinct dried, dark flower character with forest floor and mushroom notes. It is particularly complex and evolves over time in the glass and for over two decades in the bottle. Hearty dishes with some sweetness and richness like lamb chops or pork tenderloin match well with the berry fruit and dark floral character of our most complex, nuanced, and layered Pinot noir. It will benefit from decanting 1-2 hours before serving and can be aged up to 20 years. 128 w i n e r y i n fo r m a t ion St. Innocent produces distinctive Pinot noirs with an emphasis on the complex nuances of specific terroirs. This complexity is reflected in the aromas, flavors, and, most importantly, textures that derive from a specific place in a specific growing season. Our winemaking focuses on creating broad flavors and textures across your palate as well as capturing balanced acidity. We use medium-size ferments and press based on tannin and texture development. All single-vineyard Pinot noirs age in French oak for 16 months, using a variety of coopers and low percentage of new wood. It is here that we have Dijon clone 777 grafted to Riparia Gloire rootstock on Loess-derived, Laurelwood soil. The combination of soil, clone, rootstock, and this special hilltop location work in concert to consistently deliver Alloro’s most complex, balanced, dynamic, and complete Pinot noir wine. To identify the selection that would be used for this special auction wine, we meticulously combed through all of our estate barrels, looking for the elements needed to showcase the very best expression of Alloro Vineyard’s personality. We were looking for elements that would highlight both the intensity and concentration, as well as the subtlety, elegance, and grace of this site. In the end, four barrels of our “Winery Block” were blended to create only five cases of this very special 100% Alloro Vineyard Estate, single vineyard, single block, single clone, single soil series wine. We are very proud to share this Alloro Vineyard Estate “Single Series Barrel Selection” made exclusively for this auction. ta s t in g n o te s This wine reveals black cherry and black raspberry, with vivid Italian spice, dried rose petal, and hints of cinnamon, clove, and dark chocolate. The luscious mouth-feel has substantial mid-palate weight and broad, silky texture that persists pleasurably on the palate. The bright acidity acts in concert with this wine’s unique flavor profile to create a satisfying tension and long finish that lingers with a potpourri of dark fruit, dried rose, and exotic spices. 132 w i n e r y i n fo r m a t ion Alloro Vineyard is 70 acres of uniquely contoured, loess-derived, Laurelwood soil. Located on a southwest-facing slope in Oregon’s Chehalem Mountains, this special place is the heart and soul of our wines and is personally cared for by founder David Nemarnik. We are a boutique producer, crafting all our wines from our sustainably farmed single vineyard site, which also hosts a diverse mixture of many other crops, plants, and animals forming an extraordinary whole-farm setting. Our winemaker, Tom Fitzpatrick, believes that a wine should be an “expression of place, at a moment in time” and should capture the unique personality of a site as it is expressed in each vintage. Rudy Marchesi took over operations from the founding family in 2005 after over 25 years in the wine industry and managing Montinore for several years. Since then, Rudy and his team have worked together to produce wines that have both elegance and complexity. Employing Biodynamic farming practices in the vineyards produces grapes with rich character. Thoughtful teamwork, native yeasts, and a true love of the craft in the winery transform what the vineyards have to offer into our unique and flavorful wines, true to their varietal and our special place in the Northern Willamette Valley. 134 NOTES 135 — LOT# 66 — ARCHERY SUMMIT 2014 Aliquando Pinot noir lot size 5 CASES vineyard names RED HILLS & ARCUS ESTATES ava DUNDEE HILLS winemaker CHRIS MAZEPINK HARVEST 9/14 - 9/19/14 BOTTLING 12/10/15 ALC 14.5% w i n e d e s c r ip t ion Archery Summit has selected our favorite barrels from the best blocks on our famed Red Hills Estate and Arcus Estate vineyards to produce this 2014 Pinot noir Cuvée. w i n e r y i n fo r m a t ion Since its inception in 1993, Archery Summit has been devoted to crafting exceptional Pinot noir from its 120 acres across six estate vineyards.
