LOVRO & LILLY MATAČIĆ FOUNDATION was established
in 1987 in accordance with Maestro Lovro von Matačić
and his wife Lilly’s final will and testament as a non-profit association aiming to put the donors’ primary will in
action: to support and promote the artistic development
of young and talented conductors in Croatia and all over
the world, as well as to publish and document works that
will promote the artistic achievements of Maestro Lovro
von Matačić. The Foundation supports young conductors
primarily through grants extended to a number of candidates and through the organization of a large international competition for conductors, that is held every four
years in Zagreb. The Foundation has so far offered scholarships or other types of financial support to numerous
young Croatian conductors at the start of their careers.
MATAČIĆ CAN SHOW MUSIC EMERGING FROM THE
“OVERALL
HUMAN NATURE, VAST AND DEEP, WARM
AND LIMITLESS, AND THE IMPRESSION IS SO STRONG
THAT IT MAKES THE ENTIRE BODY AND SOUL VIBRATE
TO THE VERY ROOTS.
(Philharmonic, 1967)
”
Conductor and composer LOVRO VON MATAČIĆ (18991985) used a single word to describe his versatile artistic
personality – musician. After acquiring the knowledge he
needed in Vienna, his broad spirit led him further from
Zagreb, Ljubljana and Belgrade to concert and opera
stages of Paris, Florence, Milan, Bayreuth, Berlin, London, Tokyo... He con˝ducted the Philharmonic Orchestras of Berlin, Czech Republic, and Munich, recorded for
labels such as Columbia and Supraphon, performed in
the Bavarian State Opera, with the Dresden State Chapel,
in the Operas of Chicago and Rome, in Teatro Colon in
Buenos Aires, Musikverein in Vienna, in Museum Concerts in Frankfurt, heading the National Opera Orchestra
of Monte Carlo, and many more. The list also includes
the Zagreb Philharmonic Orchestra, with which he initiated the Presenting Young Conductors series. The mu-
sicians he collaborated with include Arthur Rubinstein,
Christian Ferras i Rudolf Buchbinder, Marijana Radev,
Ruža Pospiš Baldani, Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, Christa
Ludwig, Renata Tebaldi, Birgit Nilsson, Leontyne Price,
Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau... Apart from his favorites, Anton Bruckner and Richard Wagner, Lovro von Matačić’s
interests moved from Palestrina, Monteverdi and Henry Purcell through Bach, Händel, Gluck, Mozart, Haydn
and Beethovena to Mahler, Janáček, R. Strauss, Wagner,
Verdi and others. He had been very attentive to Croatian
authors, and made Croatian music a part of the global
orchestral repertoire during his performances around
the world. Croatian and European music will primarily
remember his greatness and significance in the field of
conducting, while the young artists to whom the Lovro
and Lillly Matačić Foundation has given a chance to study,
grow, and develop will mostly remember the maestro’s
human quality and selflessness, who left another piece
of enduring legacy to music and the society in general
through his noble gesture.
