Arts and Culture Education and Recreation Social Services Historical and Environmental Preservation 2010 Annual Report Chairman’s Letter I am pleased to offer our Annual Report for 2010. It only seems a short while ago that we were reporting on 2009. Our pace of living seems to be accelerating. Just after we dealt with the economic crisis of 2008, here we are again facing another one. State finances are in dire straits and the middle-east is in turmoil. It’s hard to keep up. Maybe it’s time to slow down to reflect on how fortunate we are to live in the United States and especially in Hudson. Each of us can make a difference Hudson Community Foundation can help Hudson Community Foundation has spent the last year striving to educate Hudsonites about community foundations and how they can help each of us make a difference in our community. We have published several shiny brochures, but sometimes we make it too hard to understand. It’s simple, really. If a person or family is of a mind and means to want to contribute to the betterment of our community by supporting those causes that make a difference, we are ready to help. Whether it’s a donation to our Annual Fund Drive or establishing a family charitable fund, we expedite the process by making it easy to comply with all the IRS regulations and obtain the best possible tax deduction. A family charitable fund, known as a “Donor Advised Fund,” allows donors to select the charities they want to support. This fund can be started with as little as $10,000 in cash, stock, or property. The application forms make the process simpler than opening a checking account; and, the funds can still be managed by the donor’s financial advisor. While the Foundation’s grants focus on Hudson, a Donor Advised Fund can make grants to any recognized charity in the United States, even those that do their good works in other countries. Some philosopher once said “a life is measured, not by what you get, but what you give.” If you want to move from “success” to “significance,” we stand ready to assist. If you desire more information, or have questions, please feel free to contact our friendly staff at 330-655-3580. They will be glad to help. Jim Hackney Hudson Community Foundation | 2010 Annual Repor t | 2 Pr e s i d e n t ’ s l e t t e r I was delighted on hearing in January that the Board elected me as volunteer President and CEO of Hudson Community Foundation. I see this as a return to my community foundation roots. My first exposure to community foundations goes back to 1986 when I became Chief Financial Officer of the Cleveland Foundation. This gave me the opportunity of a lifetime to draw on the heritage and experience of the country’s first community foundation. Patterned after the Cleveland model, HCF is now one of over 700 community foundations around the country. While at the Cleveland Foundation, we established one of the earlier Donor Advised Fund programs in the country. Right from the beginning, I could sense that Donor Advised Funds (DAFs as they are called), would cause a “sea change” in family philanthropy. With an initial contribution of $10,000, individuals of even average means could now become philanthropists. Until then family philanthropy was reserved to only the very wealthy. Because of its simplicity, DAFs are now the most popular form of family philanthropy in America and a favorite of HCF donors. In addition to DAFs, HCF offers a full range of simple, smart and meaningful gifting options that allow donors to tailor their involvement to meet their unique objectives. Since our founding in 2000, Hudson residents have entrusted Hudson Community Foundation with almost $8 million in contributions to their family foundations. During these ten years, over $3 million in grants were made, including $700,000 in grant distributions to charitable organizations in Hudson. Hudson philanthropists have had and continue to have a great influence on the community we know today. Now, draw a picture of Hudson in your mind and imagine the possibilities of your family’s legacy in that picture. My number-one focus as President is to make HCF’s promise of enabling simple, smart and meaningful family philanthropy known to every family in Hudson. Phil Tobin H u d s o n ’ s H i s to ry o f P h i l a n t h r o p h y Yesterday The concept of philanthropy is first recorded about 2,500 years ago in ancient Greece in the play Prometheus Bound. The author told as a myth how the primitive creatures were created to be human at first but had no knowledge, skills or culture of any kind. They lived in caves, in the dark, in constant fear for their lives. Prometheus, a Titan whose name meant “forethought,” gave them two empowering, life-enhancing gifts: Fire which symbolized knowledge, skills, technology, arts and science; and blind hope or optimism. With fire, humans could be optimistic; with optimism, they could use fire constructively, to improve the human condition. David Hudson along with 45 friends and relatives arrived in Hudson on June 26, 1799. He set out to build a model community and was quite successful as Hudson grew and prospered for the first 8 decades. In the late 1800’s things took a turn for the worse when the Western Reserve College left for Cleveland in 1882, a fire destroyed an entire block of downtown in 1892 and Hudson’s only bank suddenly closed in 1904 causing many residents to lose their life savings. In 1907, James W. Ellsworth returned to Hudson after making a fortune in coal in order to restore his beloved Hudson to a model town. Today Around the year 2000, Tom and Joy Murdough stepped to the forefront to lead and capitalize the downtown redevelopment project in order to create a Norman Rockwell downtown district. The point is, Hudson is a spectacular community partially because of the love, dedication and generous gifts of time, talent and treasure of some of Hudson’s great citizens. The Hudson Community Foundation started in 2000 with early leadership from Phil Tobin, Bill Wooldredge and Den Rich. Hudson Community Foundation was established in order to empower all Hudsonites to Enrich Hudson Forever by making the practice of philanthropy simple, smart and meaningful. We thank each one of you for all that you have done and all that you will continue to do in the future. We encourage you to partner with the Hudson Community Foundation as you continue on your journey from success to significance. The Hudson Community Foundation wants to assist you with your philanthropy by working directly with you and your family to make giving both easy and effective, while also helping you find joy in giving. Donald Tharp 3 | 2010 Annual Repor t | Hudson Community Foundation Hudson Community Foundation | 2010 Annual Repor t | 4 community member profile: M aggi e M c G rai n or The Scholarship Made the Difference Preserving and protecting our community At one of our at-home meetings with Hudson residents, Maggie McGrainor heard us talk about scholarship funds and what they can mean to students realizing their educational dreams. For some kids it is the difference between a college degree or none at all. This aroused in her emotions about her father’s untimely death when she was in her sophomore year at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. “I shared a special relationship with my father,” says Maggie, “I was devastated with the loss.” Maggie had not given much thought about how she would go forward with her education. After the funeral, the Dean of her school stepped forward and offered a welcome and timely solution: an offer of a $500 annual scholarship and a part-time job at the college library. For Maggie this support made the difference and its true value has been with her all these years. Maggie’s husband, Ron benefitted from a scholarship during his college years as well. Maggie decided to establish a scholarship fund at Hudson Community Foundation as a memorial to her husband, Ron. In 2006 she established the Ronald and Margaret McGrainor Scholarship Fund at Hudson Community Foundation. Maggie specified that annual scholarship grants be made in two ways: In Ron’s name, for scholarships in engineering and in Maggie’s name, for scholarships in the arts. HCF’s scholarship program is now approved by the Board of Education. The McGrainor scholarships are administered by the Hudson Public Schools Endowment Fund (HPSEF). Hudson Community Foundation coordinates these arrangements and grant funds to Hudson city schools, which award the grants in the McGrainor family’s name. “It’s our way of giving back to our community. Scholarships made a difference in our lives. We hope that our efforts will make a meaningful difference in the lives of other students,” says Maggie. “The Senior Awards Assembly in May is a special event for me and my family. It’s a wonderful experience to hear and feel the appreciation of the kids.” 5 | 2010 Annual Repor t | Hudson Community Foundation Simple, smart, meaningful giving Enriching Hudson Forever Founded in 2000, Hudson Community Foundation (HCF) is an independent public charity whose mission is to enrich Hudson now and for generations to come. HCF accomplishes this by enabling simple, smart and meaningful philanthropy as a way for individuals and corporations to manage their charitable activities. HCF promotes the needs of Hudson with a philanthropic focus on: •Youth Education and Recreation •Arts and Culture •Hudson Social Services •Historical and Environmental Preservation Because HCF is a public charity, contributions qualify for the maximum tax benefits. Hudson Community Foundation | 2010 Annual Repor t | 6 Pr o u d to b e a m e r i ca n ; p r o u d to b e i n h u d s o n Financials Fourth of July Fireworks The theme for this year’s fireworks is Proud to be an American. Proud to be in Hudson. This is fitting because the fireworks are not only a great American tradition, but also a great Hudson tradition. In these difficult economic times many communities across Northeast Ohio have been forced to cancel long-running, city-funded, fireworks displays. HCF brought the fireworks back to Hudson after an absence due to a lack of funding. Since returning to Hudson four years ago the fireworks have been funded by donations and the outstanding support of numerous organizations. Providing excellent support were the City of Hudson safety and service departments and the locally-owned American Fireworks Company. Additionally, Jo-Ann Stores, Inc., MGM Entertainment/Little Tikes, and Sagamore Soils opened their properties for viewing the fireworks. Lead community sponsors included The ForTec Companies, The Burton D. Morgan Foundation, University Hospitals–Hudson Health Center, The Margaret Clark Morgan Foundation, Heinen’s Fine Foods and FirstMerit Bank. Overall, 37 businesses and 333 residents donated $50,000 in 2010. HCF has established a charitable fund with a goal to raise $500,000 for support of the annual fireworks well into the future. Progress has been made toward this goal but it remains a formidable challenge. HCF is proud to continue its leadership role organizing the 2011 Independence Day Fireworks (scheduled for Saturday, July 2) and looks forward to the continued support of the community.
