Osman Turan: “We, as the member company of
TeliaSonera’s strong group, were one of the first
to have offered a refreshed brand to the society.
Therefore, the success of this project was extremely important for us. During this period, we
were seriously watching public reactions; we were
conducting various researches; according to all
available data, common opinion was quite positive. As a result, two years later TeliaSonera decided to unite the member companies of TeliaSonera
Group operating in Scandinavian and Baltic states
under this uniform logotype. This huge unification
is a precondition for a lot of new useful novelties.
The world class services and the most attractive
offers will be a privilege only for Geocell subscribers.”

Exactly two years ago Geocell changed its color having been
presented to the public with different symbol and soon the purple
boom covered the entire country. This symbolic refurbishment was
a part of a large-scale campaign, which was related to rebranding.
Geocell, as the member of TeliaSonera’s strong group, successfully implemented its purple refreshment. So, by its refreshed brand
Geocell continued to be at your service with the same traditions
and values and a strong feedback of international experience.
The refreshed brand has exactly reflected the company’s corporate values:
To be a modern local mobile communication company;
To be the pioneer on the Georgian telecommunication market
introducing modern technologies and offering diverse services
to the consumers;
To be an integral part of Georgian life in the sphere of economic development and social responsibility.
Today this successful refreshment has been followed by its logical development and 18 leading companies operating in Scandinavian and Baltic countries of TeliaSonera Group united under one
brand. By this, TeliaSonera took one important step in the history of
its existence with the common symbol representing the unity of the
leading telecommunication company’s international authority and
the local values.

On May 12, TeliaSonera united the following companies under
the common brand: Netcom, NexGen Tel (Norway); Telia (Denmark); Telia (Sweden); Sonera (Finland); EMT and Elion (Estonia); Omnitel (Lithuania); TeliaSonera, TeliaSonera Finans and
TeliaSonera’s international operator. The new brand in an identical
appearance was already represented in Kcell (Kazakhstan); Geocell (Georgia); Ncell (Nepal); Tcell (Tajikistan); Azercell (Azerbaijan) and Moldcell (Moldova). On June 16 Ucell (Uzbekistan) also
joined this big alliance.
Common brand is represented with dynamic, common symbol,
one graphical style and what is most important, with a purple color
of “your network”, which is quite well-known for everybody on the
Georgian market.
The flags hanging in front of Geocell head office, as well as
the photo exposition, exhibited on easels in the yard on May 19
informed the quests about a great unification. Mr. Osman Turan,
CEO of the company, personally informed the reporters about
this novelty and spoke about the details related to this global
issue. The photo exposition depicted the views of those cities,
where you will find a well known symbol of TeliaSonera from now
on.

A lot of smiles, fun, happy faces, adults returning to the
childhood… Is not it possible to make at least one day in the
children’s town Mziuri founded by Nodar Dumbadze like the
writer was dreaming about? His dream came true in 2006
and since then children’s town Mziuri has been hosting children’s festival “I Can See the Sun.” An initiative group led
by Ana Goguadze is the author of the idea and the organizer
of the festival. This year Geocell also joined the festivity of
the sun celebrated for already the sixth consecutive year. As
you know, the company is an active supporter of Ana Goguadze’s projects.
Everything started from one ordinary day, when the project organizers decided to make the children visiting Mziuri
feel themselves in a fairy-tale. Just therefore, the festival is
open for everybody and this festive day is designed for all
children, despite their social, physical or mental abilities.
This year the event had special guests, including the children from the Surami and “Momavali” Orphanages as well
as all those children, whose parents did not hesitate and
joined the Sun Festival together with their children. Each
corner and area of Mziuri Town was specially decorated for
this day. A lot of purple balloons and various solemn purple
details indicated that Geocell was also participating in the
common festivities. The current event had two major goals:
to promote the integration of children without parents and
with disabilities into the society and to take care for the children’s town Mziuri – so that to turn it into the
place of Nodar Dumbadze’s dreams – children’s town.
“As it seems, each person should deal
with a severe illness in order to analyze his entire life and to pass the
same road again, with a steady
mind… the essence of the law (of
eternity) is that … the human spirit is
much heavier than the body; it is so
heavy that one person cannot carry
it. Therefore, until we are alive, we
should support each other and try
to immortalize the spirits of each

other; you should immortalize my spirit, I should immortalize yours, others should do it in respect of others and so on,
to ensure that we do not become orphans after the death
of those others and not to stay alone in this world…” Nodar
Dumbadze (“The Law of Eternity”).
Just based on these appeals, the organizers and partners
of the festival dedicate the 1st of June to the smallest citizens of our country and Mziuri turns into the town of dreams
for them. Among the June 1 events in our capital, the Sun
Festival has no analogs in terms of its scales, significance
or contents. This project is quite different because it makes
everybody, both adults and children happy. During this day
there is no difference between the children lacking or enjoying family care. Everybody is unusually equal on this day
– children with disabilities and absolutely healthy children.
The warmth of the sun unites everybody and makes them
happy at least for one day.
The gathering at the Sun Festival started from the midday.
A lot of children and their parents witnessed a very colorful
show and felt themselves in a real fairy-tale. Characters of
various fairy-tales walking on the territory of Mziuri, children
with painted faces, drawings exhibited by the children’s studio “Akandus” on a theme “I Can See the Sun,” asphalt painted by colorful chalks… all this was creating a common fun.
The amphitheater of Mziuri proved to be the most crowded
place, where under the burning sun the children were carefully
answering the questions around various fairytales asked by Duta from the stage. Geocell
presented symbolic gifts to those who answered correctly. The solemn day was closed
by a concert performed by a “123”
studio. The applauses were replacing jazz compositions performed by
small artists on various instruments.
A big noise was heard from the specially decorated Town of Mziuri on June 1.
Everybody could see the sun during
that day and everybody was warmed
up at the children’s celebration.

It is extremely difficult to gain a foothold and achieve a success, especially
when you are kilometers away from your native country. Space is changing and
you are moving to another dimension. Other culture, traditions, values and environment, which are quite different from those you perceived as your own during
the whole life.
The world is changeable and we are changing together with it. Under the
conditions of globalization, when the world is lining up with the horizon and the
countries are approaching each other, others become familiar to you. Adventurers are actively getting involved in the process starting to familiarize themselves
with the strangers. The white road is crossing the world on a purple stones in
various places and the members of the large family are visiting each other.
The road from Tian Shan to Himalaya Mountains – we will tell you about expats, who discovered the path moving to the success in Geocell; they went to
the world of communication and managed to gain a foothold far from their usual
environment, in a new space.

Maia Machavariani –Tashkent, Uzbekistan
Life, success or failure of each person is more or less determined
by his/her values and principles. Proceeding from my official duties,
I have to hold a lot of interviews and I understood one thing – if a person is a thinker and has a desire to develop, he/she will master and
study everything. Respectively, labor and diligence are necessary to
achieve success. You should develop on a daily basis and achieve
your goals gradually. Life is like a mountain river; if you stop, it will
take you away and make you step back; therefore, you should go
ahead and struggle with the flow.
I appeared in Geocell quite unexpectedly. First, it was the Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University. After graduating from the classical
philology faculty, I went to the Kekelidze Institute of Manuscripts. It
was just what I was dreaming about. Though, the events developed
in Georgia in the nineties hampered the realization of my dreams. The
issue was solved quite easily – I should have chosen other sources
of keeping a family. So, I started to work for one of the international

other - “Global.” The latter should have provided subscriber services to the company Geocell and to the newly established GSM
operator “GT Mobile.” The two companies merged in 2001 and I
was appointed the Coordinator at Human Resources and Administrative Department of the company Geocell.
I acquired a huge knowledge and experience in Geocell. Previously, I had no academic education in the HR sphere, where I still
work, only some work experience and short-term trainings. But
everyday practical experience, problems and the search of ways
of their duly solution – with this combination I acquired those skills,
which I would not be able to acquire in any higher educational institution.
The life of experts was always attracting me. After eight years
spent in Geocell I got a unique opportunity – I was invited to Uzbekistan as an expert. I felt that time for changes has come, when
you should move from one place to another and look for something
new; I arrived in Tashkent in early July 2008 and started to work as
the deputy director general of the company Ucell in charge of staff
issues.
The first year was very difficult because of several factors and
first of all – the unfamiliar environment. We have much in common
with Uzbekistan, common past in the Soviet Union. But still this
is another environment; it is the East with different culture, traditions, and imaginations. I will never forget the first month, when I
and other employees of my department were looking at each other
with frightened eyes. For them I was a new chief, while I had a lot of
questions – who are they and what kind of behavior do they expect
from me? You try to ensure that nobody notices your weakness, to
be self-confident and assertive. Now, we smile while remembering
it, though this is the stage, which everybody should pass through,
when he/she enters a new environment.
The fact that I appeared in Ucell during the most important
changes was yet another difficulty. TeliaSonera purchased an operator in Uzbekistan, which was functioning in the country for already 10 years. We, the new management, should have changed
this old company completely, the culture of their life, the rules of
their life and relations, absolutely everything. It is much difficult to
change the old than to build something new. Changes meant staff
changes too that was already my duty. I compare this process with
a surgery, which you do not want to undergo though it is irreversible. A part of the employees was rather skeptical and they did not
believe in success. It was my personal pain to dismiss the employees because I was turning their lives upside down, with your rules
in the new environment and so that not to trigger any negative consequences – of course, it was the most difficult period.
Almost three years have passed since I came to Ucell and today it is obvious that everything, what we, the management, did

together, was the only true way. Number of subscribers increased 10
fold (we started with about 700 000 subscribers and today we have
over 8 million subscribers); respectively, our market share increased
three times, while incomes were increasing at least 40% per year.
The reforms implemented by us yielded good results.
Today, Uzbekistan is a modern, secular state, but people take
care of their traditions too. One of such interesting traditions is morning pilaf, which is served to celebrate all important events in Uzbek
people’s life. The ritual usually starts at 5am, after the first morning
prayer. The pilaf is cooked in a huge cooking pot, Kazan, and only
the men are invited. A lot of people gather, probably over 1000 – it
certainly depends on the economic status of the host family. But the
more guests are the better. During the pilaf cooked to celebrate a
wedding you will also meet musicians and national instruments. I
have attended such weddings several times. It is very impressive,
when the couple enters the hall, where a solemn table is laid, with the
sounds of karnai and surnai (Uzbek trumpets). The dowry of a bride
certainly includes some national clothes. For a definite period of time
these clothes should be exhibited in a separate room in the fiancé’s
family. Then, they are folded up and kept for future generations. This
is how a tradition is transferred to future generations.
It was 2008 when I first arrived in Tashkent. I had a strange feeling – it seemed as if I appeared at home. It may seem exaggerating
but I really felt there at home – a clean city, a lot of greenery, calm
streets, few cars, calm, well-wishing people – Tbilisi of the eighties. I
did not find it difficult to get accustomed to the city. I know what I will
lack later most of all – much sun and cloudless sky. There is a dry
continental climate in Uzbekistan; during the most period of the year
there is the cloudless blue sky and the shining sun, which fills you
with joy. It is very hot in summer, but nevertheless it is good, because
otherwise, there would be no such shining, bright colors.
There is nothing better than walking in Bukhara and Khiva, especially in early spring and late autumn, when you have a strange feeling of getting in touch with the past. I managed and traveled to the
great part of Uzbekistan; but it is not enough and I continue traveling.
What impressed me most of all in Uzbekistan is a bazaar. A famous
Alay Bazaar astonished me very much – this is a great exhibition hall.
Generally, a bazaar is an integral part of eastern culture; a covered
market with a small fountain in the center, from where everybody
takes water; one can buy everything here – bread, sweets, fruits,
vegetables, nuts, etc. I thought that the Alay Bazaar is a historical
place, it is a demonstrative bazaar and that is why it is so well tended.
After I settled down in Uzbekistan, I visited a lot of markets both in
Tashkent and in the regions. All of them are extremely beautiful and
clean.

In spring and autumn it is especially pleasant to sit down on an
external terrace of any café. Recently, we became frequent guests
of karaoke bars. By the way, they have a positive influence on your
mood. We rent a separate room with the relevant apparatus and
shout as much as possible; neither ear, nor voice matter here; it
helps us get rid of tension and bad temper.
I spend most of my time with Valeria. She is our chief accountant, a very good-humored and interesting person. I do not remember how we first made friends. I think, it was our love to coffee that
brought us together – people here mostly drink tea rather than
coffee. Anyway, liters of coffee drunk at the restaurant located on
the last floor of our office made us real friends. We have much in
common and much different and this makes our relations more interesting. We get up and go mountaineering one day simply to stay
in silence. It is good when being silent with another person makes
you feel comfortable. Luckily, I also made friends with some Georgians. I rented my first flat in Tashkent in the house of the fifties,
which had a large yard with a lot of trees. A small dog was running
in this yard all day long. “Kiki, Kiki” – the children were calling it.
Kiki received me as a host and we made friends quite soon. During
the terrible 2008 August developments, after the working day I was
running to the Georgian Embassy to learn something new. Besides
me, several other Georgians were also coming there. Among them
there was Gia Tandashvili. He asked me whether I needed any help,
whether I found a normal flat. I started to explain where I lived, about
my yard and he asked me: “Is a dog running there in the yard?” I
answered: “Yes, Kiki. And what?” He told me that Kiki was his dog.
So, this is how I got acquainted with Gia and his wife, Inga Duduchava. It was a great happiness for me, because you need to speak
your native language like air. Later I got acquainted with another
couple – Sasha Kveladze and Mzia Kharchilava, the friends of Gia
and Inga, who were working for the Red Cross project in Tashkent
for already two years. Later Sasha and Mzia returned to Tbilisi and
I regret about it, but this is life. Once we will all settle down in Tbilisi
and continue our pleasant joint evenings there.
Until then, there is still calmness in my yard. I still take pleasure in
walking in Bukhara and Khiva and I still go mountaineering when I
need silence. The river of life is still flowing down from the mountain
with the silence on its peak. You should keep step with it to avoid
that it takes you away, but at the same time you should not stay on
top – because the life will pass you, and then you will not be able
to distinguish silence from noise, because there will be no choice
between them. It is difficult not to be a philosopher in the East 

Keti Pirtskhalava - Himalaya, Kathmandu
“This book is being written far, very far away from my country,
but the thoughts do not know either distance or time. It worries you
constantly wherever you may be or however you may feel yourself,
because this main thing is a thought and you cannot run away from
it. However, you do not know how you will name it and probably it
does not matter. Most important is that it worries you and you cannot distance yourself from that small part of the world that is called
your native country and your native land. This thought is following
you constantly wherever you may be and however you may feel
yourself and you compare everything with your small country, your
people, rules and traditions, rivers and mountains”…
Everything started from this book, the book which Davit Turashvili wrote upon his return from the Himalaya Mountains. After reading “Kathmandu” I got some imagination about the country, while
some time later I got closer to this feeling expressed by the author.
Many people are still astonished when they ask me ‘Keti, where
are you?’ and I answer that I am in Kathmandu. This may be surprising but I really am in Nepal for already 18 months. And this time
has passed so quickly that I am sometimes asking myself whether
I really stay here for already 18 months.
Why Nepal?…Several years ago we received a message in the
company Geocell that TeliaSonera purchased operators on new
markets. Proceeding from my impatient nature I got interested in it
and started to clarify what was going on in these countries. Nepal
seemed most interesting to me. In terms of business, the market
was great and attractive. At the same time, its amazing culture,
traditions and nature – realized dreams of adventurers! Shortly
speaking, I achieved my goal and found myself in Nepal…
Before making a decision I had an opportunity to arrive in Kathmandu for three days… I remember the first “cultural shock” even
today; during these three days I wrote hundreds of SMS to my
friends saying: “You have not seen Asia and do not know what it
means.” I lived in a fashionable hotel during three days and I have
not eaten almost anything… I was afraid to touch anything… I was
washing my hands and face in every 5 minutes… Two days later
the emotions started to decline. I tried to see the positive side of
everything. I visited a lot of places and made sure that it’s possible
to live here… On the third day I returned to Tbilisi. I had not received
a final decision. I was thinking on my way back that if I felt in Tbilisi
that I was interested in all these and I could live there - I would return back. I was waiting for transit in Doha and I made a decision – I
should return at least to see the Himalaya Mountains!
So, the changes have started. For the first time I discovered a

lot of colors, which the Nepalese are so proud of. Everest, or
Sagarmāthā in Nepalese and Jomolungma in Tibetan languages– out of ten 8000m peaks of the Himalaya Mountains, eight are
situated on the territory of Nepal. Due to it, Nepal is familiar to the
entire world. Buddhist temples, which start from the birthplace
of Buddha, Lumbini, are scattered in various places of Nepal. A
lot of solemn days related to Buddha are celebrated throughout
the country. Public walking starts from early morning and the city
is sinking in the flowers and scents. The Nepalese inherited the
ancient rituals from their ancestors. The Nepalese have many
more gods than the days during a year. Their greatest nationalreligious holidays are Dashain and Tihar festivals of Nepal – late
autumn holidays, which last for five days. The Nepalese people
go to their temples to celebrate this day; they visit each other and
cook various traditional dishes. They also perform their religious
rituals. During one of the most beautiful Holi Festival days, young
or old people mingle and exchange colors in the street… If you
walk in the street during that period, you will certainly become
their “victim.” You will not see the colors of ornaments depicted
on your wrist somewhere else. It is said that the whiteness of the
Himalaya Mountains gives them more brilliance.
Radisson Hotel and its yard are seen from the window of the
Nepalese house… And a wedding is being celebrated in the
yard, a real Nepalese wedding. I can observe the cars decorated
with flowers, how the young couple and their relatives are dancing in the yard… Frequently, especially in the first months, I had
arrived there without invitation and attended such ceremony…
The view from the window revives again during the tourist seasons, when there is such fun in Sky Bar that I have a discothèque
even at home. Everything is shining so much and everything is
decorated so beautifully that you will cheer up even if you are in
low spirits.
Although Nepal is bordering with two fastest growing countries, which actually moved the center of the earth gravity from
the West to the East, Nepal continues its calm and free life. The
Nepalese like talking and noise; they have large families, have
relations with about 1000 relatives and are together at any occasion. What is most important, all these people are called a sister,
brother, uncle or cousin, though they may be distant relatives
of their grandmothers or grandfathers or simply their acquaintances. This is a tradition, which brings them into closer contacts
with each other.
I manage to look into the window quite rarely; that is why each
new view is so interesting and diverse. Time is running so quickly

from week to week that I cannot even look back. This is already
another window and another view. One more Nepalese tradition
continues here – as soon as a new expat arrives, he/she is received in the family and familiarized with the local situation. Everything happens in a solemn atmosphere. I acquired several closest
and best friends in Nepal. As far as the Nepalese or local friends
are concerned, I believe that if it were not them, it would be impossible to work here. Each day is extremely interesting and cheerful
with them, especially in the marketing and commercial department, where the locals have their special vision. Each meeting
and conference is very interesting and cheerful. You know for sure
that the day will be interesting and I will not have time for melancholia. During 18 months I have already changed the third position in the marketing department that is not usual for me but it

was necessary for business. A year ago there were only four
employees in the marketing department and we had 2 million
subscribers. Today, our number increased to 15 and we have
over 5 million subscribers… When you do something and see
the results of your work, motivation and enthusiasm are increasing significantly.
One of the first and important projects, which we implemented in Nepal, was rebranding. We were working twentyfour-hours. Probably the success started from here. Consumers accepted new brand quite positively. Purple color
was established in the city. Purple clothes were seen in the
windows of the shops. All newspapers were writing about
us. Nature also supported us and made a purple tree, which
grows only in Nepal, blossom. Everything developed in favor
of us – both subscribers and revenues increased simultaneously. This is for the third month already that I hold the position of marketing director. This is probably one of the most
interesting and responsible positions. Besides a lot of various
projects, which we have implemented until now, we plan a lot
of novelties, which will increase the popularity of our products
and the brand. Most important is a correct marketing strategy, which will promote a long-term growth of the company.
We are working on a daily basis to become a market leader
with firm positions, to achieve high popularity of the brand,
best service centers and realization network… I believe in the
slogan, which is always helpful on the way towards success –
love the job, which you are doing and believe in what you are
doing, and success will come by itself. The great Himalaya
Mountains are achievable.
I remember that during one unforgettable day we travelled to
one of the largest cities of Nepal – Pokhara, which in the south
borders with Phewa Lake with the mountains and the most beautiful views around it. This is where one of the most beautiful parts
of the Himalaya Mountains, Annapurna opens. The car was driving in a vertical condition; an abyss was seen from my window.
Then we passed through the small settlements and went up a
long stair to get to the destination. But it was worth doing in order
to see what we have seen there. Purple clean sky, blue mountains and the sun – the most memorable day in my life.
I live in the capital of Nepal, Kathmandu. The Himalaya Mountains are covering everything here. When they ask me - Keti,
when will you arrive? - I have no answer… I will stay here unless
everything becomes boring 

You can even write a poem about the green glass of the Bosporus;
you can simply see it and the muse of poetry may fascinate you. But
it happens at a glance. Then you enter the depth of Turkey and the
greatest eastern fairy-tale is opening in front of you; from one narrow street, which is divided into turnings, you move to a large square,
then again turnings and winding paths. You will meet the shadows
of once glorious Ottoman Empire in modern buildings. The past has
taken away those old wooden houses. Though, the main thing has remained – spirit and scent! The modernity built on the ruins of the empire has a sweet smell diluted with various creams and essential oils.
I love Istanbul very much. I have visited this city for several times
before, but I could have never imagined that I would have had to move
to this city. Life is a surprise. This is the city, where sights and novelties
are never exhausted. It is developing very quickly and sometimes I
think that it is outrunning the time.
I recollect Orhan Pamuk’s pen paintings, which he describes in his
book “Istanbul: Memories and the City.” “Sometimes, I feel the poetic
essence of the city, which is felt in the remains of the imperial glory
and historical monuments, with special sharpness and unavoidable
melancholy. I imagined that it was me, only me, who managed to
catch this essence. And I was telling myself proudly, I would be able
to see Istanbul!”
I think how much will it take a person to see Istanbul?!
It is over a year that I am staying in Istanbul. I am working as the
Brand Manager for TeliaSonera Eurasia’s Head Office. This is a great
progress in my professional career. A new stage has started in my life
after spending 10 years in Geocell. I moved from the position of international roaming coordinator to the Marketing Department. I was
leading Geocell’ re-branding upon completion of which I guessed
what real success was. The entire period was not enough to view and
feel this city. I used this period for deepening and developing my professional experience. I have a very interesting job, which at the same
time is very hard and full of responsible. There are 7 countries in TeliaSonera eurazia group, Georgia being one of them. Every country is
different by its culture, stsaus of development and perspectives of

future growing. It makes my job with them even more interesting.
Besides brand management I am at the head of marketing researches, which helps me study different markets for planning the
futher strategic projects.
The first stage envisaged learning the Turkish language. It happened itself. The sounds acquired familiar sonority and I guessed
that I was already apprehending the words. I understand better than
I speak.
Do you know how ‘invitation’ sounds in Turkish? - – hoşgeldin!
But you should utter it, or hear it in the most diverse place of the
world – the Istanbul Bazaar. The famous Grand Bazaar – in Turkish
Kapalıçarşı is still preserved. Built in 1461, it is located in the place of
former Byzantium.
It covers over 4400 counters, 2200 rooms, mosques, bath houses and 200 fountains. Presently, this is the largest market throughout the world, which is located on 200 thousand square meters. You
will meet here everything – from eastern sweets to various spices.
An entire long row of antiquities offers you handmade golden and
silver jewelry; the world famous Turkish rugs, handmade ceramics,
leather goods – everything in one large space; one day in the Istanbul Bazaar is a real adventure!
If the above mentioned will still leave you indifferent, you will not
be able to bypass one special row, which is divided into two – green
and white, but if you approach wattled baskets, bags and pots, you
will discover a lot of various spectrum of one color. Sunk in green,
you will taste a real tea, while whiteness covers those candies which
are famous throughout the world. The Turkish people are telling a
legend about Rahat Locum like a tasty delight: A sultan lived in Istanbul in XVIII century, who loved candies very much. The confectioners in his palace were doing their utmost to cook something special and extraordinary. However, they failed to delight their sultan.
Ali Muhiddin Haci Bekir chose a simple way. He mixed water, sugar,
corn starch, and almonds and cooked them up; then he poured the
mixture into a flat pan slicked with almond oil, and let it cool. Then he
sprinkled it with powdered sugar, cut it into bite-sized chunks and
served them to the sultan. The latter was fascinated. It is said that
the Sultan specially kept these chunks in his box.
You will definitely take this Turkish delight put on golden trays from
the Bazaar. Then, looking from the balcony you will cast a glance at
sleeping Istanbul and see the shadows again, the shadows of once
glorious Ottoman Empire, which give a special spirit to the city!
This is the first unforgettable impression! I am approaching Istanbul and hoşgeldin!
Greetings from Istanbul!

Seven improvised hours pass very quickly; however, time
is lost in lines, ideas and new characters. Seven hours are
not enough to create a literary masterpiece, though it is quite
enough to express the idea of this masterpiece. A new legend is
being created during seven hours; then a new face of the legend
is revealed and new names are introduced to you. But what is it
time when after completion of seven hours more than seven new
handwritings are left.
Literary seconds take us to particular time in order to put new
ideas on paper. This time, the place will be full of air. A space will
be added to the land of ancient Ikalto and clear horizon, which
unites Ilia’s native mountains and a glassy surface of the Kvareli
Lake – the space, where muses are waiting for beginning writers.
This year a student literary competition “Autumn Legend” will
be held for the third time. It has a short though impressive history. The competition is a joint project co-sponsored by the Ivane
Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University and the company Geocell.
Each year we select the place where the beginning writers create their improvised works. In 2009 the competition was held at
the Ikalto Monastery; last year the contestants gathered on the
Kvareli Lake to test their creative capabilities. “Autumn Dwellers”
reach any dream with their pens; they make all dreams come
true on paper; they are magicians of the literary world. You are
not familiar with them, because they are standing at the beginning of the road. Our goal is to connect this road to you.
The achievements made during past two years incited the organizers of the competition to expand its scales. Under the aegis
of the Tbilisi State University the student competition will expand
its scales and cover all higher educational institutions accredited
in Tbilisi. This decision can be explained by a huge interest of
students in this competition. Messages sent by students to the
competition’s special electronic address proved their desire to
get involved in the competition. Furthermore, the students registered on Facebook had an opportunity to express their opinions and express readiness of involving other higher educational
institutions. For future growth and development of the competition, as well as for more and active involvement of students, by
decision of the organizers, a local literary competition of the Tbilisi State University should turn into a large scale student event.
In 2011 new faces and new names will be discovered outside
the limits of the white monument. The students from nine higher
educational institutions will try to leave their handwritings in the
history of the competition.
The venue of the competition will be specified on the day of its
announcement, while the competition will start on the first day
of the studies. Last year rowing Aniki’s boat on the Kvareli Lake
brought a victory to its author. Who will replace Aniki?!

Owing to various innovations and recent advertisement campaign
you would have apparently noticed that Geocell has outrun the time.
A slight mysticism combined with reality is the company’s successful strategy. The raffle, which was broadcasted live by Rustavi 2 TV
on March 15 - the day celebrating Geocell’s 14-year anniversary would have assured you of it. The interior of the studio looking like
the galaxy and decorated with the stars really created a mystic atmosphere, in which ten luckiest subscribers “have traveled.” I am
sure that at that moment each of them really lost a sense of being
on firm ground. During the event, all of them became the owners of
new Hyundai Sonatas quite simply. We have told you in the previous
edition that during the raffle the subscribers did not have to guess the
figures. The subscribers had simply to dial *011# OK; those who underwent free registration and filled their balance by 5 GEL loaded an
the accounted, gained a chance to win the lottery. The subscribers
received 1 ticket for each GEL 5. All the ten lucky subscribers have an
interesting history of winning the car; so, we will try to tell you in short
how Geocell has changed the life of each of them.
It is impossible not to believe in fortune, when you learn about the
story of 16-year-old Tariel Ivanidze’s victory. He had only one ticket
and just the number of his mobile phone appeared in Duta’s hands.
Besides Tariel Ivanidze, who lives in Vani, one of his neighbors also
appeared quite lucky. When Tariel Ivanidze learnt about his victory, he
went out to the neighbors gathered outdoors to congratulate him on
his victory, threw the key of his old Volga and shouted: “It will belong
to whoever catches it.”
18-year-old Maria Apanasyeva from Moscow, who studies at the
Tbilisi Black Sea University, could not believe that she won the car.
But after she faced the reality, she had no other choice but to start
thinking about how to obtain a driving license.
27-year-old Akaki Sabashvili is from Kvareli and he had just returned from Europe. Before departure he used Geocell network
and upon return to his native country he again became a Geocell
subscriber. And Geocell appreciated his devotion. Nine cars were
already raffled and Akaki almost had no hopes for victory, when suddenly he heard Duta’s voice in this mobile phone. It is already for the
second time that Tariel became a winner of Geocell’s raffle. In the first
case, he lost a chance to win a car five years ago, though he won a
TV set.
Tbilisite Natalia Gurgenashvili is 28 years old and she also had little hopes that she would win. Though, she had collected 11 tickets.
March proved extremely lucky for her. It seems that she is very lucky.
Last year her office held a raffle and Natalia won a car there too. This

year, owing to Geocell, she became the owner
of another car.
26-year-old Avtandil Bashanidze from Batumi had an old model of Hyundai Sonata. He
had only three tickets. It was just his number,
which Duta named at the beginning of the raffle. He got so nervous that he could not even
answer Duta; he only managed to say his
name… He has never won anything and he
vefxvia qoroRliSvili
Vepkhvia Koroglishvili
could hardly believe in it.
17-year-old Rusudan Shvelidze is a wouldbe-student. While filling a balance, she had
not even thought about winning anything. She
even failed to watch TV because she was doing
her lessons. Though, she cast a glance at the
raffle and was going to leave when Duta took
out a number similar to hers… You probably
remember a TV program Vabank, which was
hosted by Duta. It turned out in live broadcast
Tengiz gordiaSvili
Tengiz Gordiashvili
that Rusudan was one those girls (number 4),
who participated in the program. Hyundai Sonata is her first car.
25-year-old Vepkhvia Koroglishvili from
Tsavkisi lost his voice from screaming too
much that evening. He had 16 tickets but he
had not even thought about victory. He says
that Geocell has made him happy in a couple
of minutes.
Tbilisite Tengiz Gordiashvili works for the
konstantine dmitrievi

social service. After this fact his colleagues
believed in the frankness of Geocell’s raffle.
He was snoozing when Duta awakened him
with pleasant news. He is extremely grateful to
Geocell for such gift.
Tbilisite Konstantine Dmitriev is 30 years old.
He had never participated in any raffle before.
He got involved in this raffle indifferently and
forgot quite soon that he underwent registration. When Duta called him in the course of the
tariel ivaniaZe
Tariel Ivanidze
program, he could not understand what he
was speaking about. After this conversation
he continued his work at a computer. Though
the telephone calls were not suspending, his
friends were calling to congratulate him on his
victory. It was just then when he realized what
had happened. He never used to have a car
and owing to Geocell his dream came true.
Zhana Tsurtsumia is from Chkhorotsku. She
had only one ticket. Therefore, she was worJana wurwumia
rying about her friend, who had collected 24
Zhana Tsurtsumia
tickets for the raffle. It was so difficult for her
to believe in her victory that she even told Duta: “If it is really you, just
wave your hand from the screen!” She says that she has never had
such happy minutes since the birth of her children.
If you want to try your fortune and receive Geocell’s pleasant surprises, be active subscribers. If you are not a Geocell subscriber yet,
then join us and the company will appreciate your devotion because

The recent natural calamities have confirmed that the resources of the
earth are not firm enough. It is said that global progress is accompanied
by the threats of global catastrophes. At a glance, a human being seems
quite weak against the laws of nature but if we understand that each of us
can at least slightly mitigate this negative impact on the earth, it will not
be bad at all.
The initiative to save the earth was first voiced in Sydney in 2007 when
over two million offices cut electricity for an hour. Soon this idea turned
into an event with global significance. In 2008, 50 million people from 370
towns of 35 countries got involved in the Earth Hour campaign. Since then,
number of countries and people participating in this campaign has increased significantly. “Turn your lights off for an hour, switch off all electric
appliances and give an hour to the earth!” – This is the third year already
that our country joined this campaign, during which people traditionally
unite at the Sheraton Metechi Palace Hotel to celebrate this day. Traditionally, the company Geocell again supported the Earth Hour campaign this
year. Like the entire world, a global event organized by the World Wildlife
Fund (WWF) was held in Georgia at 20:30 – 21:30 on March 26. This year
the event was again sponsored by Sheraton Metechi Palace Hotel, Radio
City FM 101.9 and Geocell. It should be noted that the Earth Hour is largely
supported by over 100 hotels of Europe, Africa and Central Asia.
In Georgia, this day was celebrated in candlelight. Electricity was
turned off for an hour, while a live concert of Geostar contestants proved
extremely romantic in candlelight. The guests invited to the event as
well as those who spontaneously joined the evening symbolically tasted
green cocktails. Besides Sheraton Hotels in Tbilisi and Batumi, this year
Radisson and Marriott hotels also joined the calls to save the earth. Nino
Isakadze, marketing manager of Sheraton Metechi Palace Hotel, indicated that about 300 employees of the hotel switched off electricity even
at their homes for an hour. The organizers of the event plan to further increase the number of participants in future.
It would be excellent if we take into consideration goodwill of millions of
people throughout the world and switch off electricity for an hour once a
year to express our symbolic support to the environment and our planet!

When you have been falling asleep under the noise of a combing machine and a spinning wheel since your childhood, when you have been
looking at your mother and grandmother making a rug, it is probably
natural that you have a great desire to study and continue this activity.
Lili Murtazashvili mastered how to make a Tushetian rug even before she
learnt reading and writing. Since then, she has been trying to revive the
Tushetian multi-century traditional activity, which is almost on the verge
of forgetting. Tusheti, the ancient mountainous region of Georgia, has
preserved extremely rich traditions of old culture. Tushetian rug is distinguished by its color, quality and ornaments… After traveling to Georgia
long ago, one of the German professors wrote a monograph, in which he
notes that Tushetian wool is unique worldwide, as it cures over 20 diseases and ideally regulates rise and decrease in the temperature.
The idea of restoration and development of traditional Tushetian rug
struck Lili Murtazashvili long ago. With the help of Rustavi 2 TV project,
she used her “one chance” and received money from Geocell. Lili Murtazashvili tried her fate in 2006 through participating in the program
“Idea, Money and One Chance” aired by Rustavi 2 TV. As a result, her
project was financed by CEO of Geocell, Osman Turan. With the support of Geocell, Lili Murtazashvili managed to combine business activity
with Tushetian culture and even expanded her production. A group of
seven people was expanded by 70 more employees. Since then, a flow
of tourists has increased in Tusheti. Since 2006 the following festivals
have been held under Geocell’s sponsorship: “Tushetian Rug”; “Colors
of Pirosmani”; “Following the Steps of Tushetian Rug”, etc. During the
tourism exhibition held at an Expo Georgia exhibition center in April, Lili
Murtazashvili presented a stand, where she exhibited her own rugs. The
purpose of this exposition was to support tourism development in Georgia. Geocell has much contributed to Lili Murtazashvili’s participation in
the exhibition.
Lili Murtazashvili’s family hosts a public festival annually. In order to
popularize a Tushetian rug, the company Geocell always supports Lili Murtazashvili and, generally, this mountainous region of Georgia. As you know,
lack of communication was the greatest problem for Tushetian shepherds.
Geocell settled this problem in the region. Lili Murtazashvili says that Geocell’s slogan “We do not give up our traditions!” fits her project most of all.

and Monument Protection of Georgia
“Generally, I think that any artistic
undertaking should be free of any taboos. These are brave works, which,
I can say boldly, will take a remarkable place in European culture. On the
other hand, what we have discovered
in Gigo Gabashvili’s photo negatives is
extremely important for us, in terms of
cultural heritage. In future, we want to
properly introduce this interesting artist to Europe. We also plan to release
an album”.
Public excitement caused by a large
scale and innovative exhibition of paintings by a famous Georgian painter, Gigo
Gabashvili held this spring has not abated yet. The question is about the project “Gigo Gabashvili as a Photo Artist”
sponsored by the Georgian newspaper,
Prime Time, and supported by the Geocell. Let us remind you that in frames
of the project, the canvases, personal
belongings and photos of the famous
painter were exhibited at the Rustaveli
Theatre during one day. The project
authors mostly focused on Gabashvili’s
previously unknown photography, which
is related to the discovery and processing of glass photo negatives.
“I was preparing the materials about
Gigo Gabashvili for Prime Time. As it
turned out during a conversation with
a researcher, Gogi Sarajishvili, all famous canvases by the painter were being created on the basis of the photos
taken by him and these photo negatives were kept somewhere till now. Five
months later I discovered over centuryold glass negatives in the depository of
the National Museum of Georgia. I had
no guarantees that they would have
any artistic value; I simply trusted my
intuition and took them to the National

Tea Telia, painter
“Probably, I cannot say anything new
about Gigo Gabashvili and his creative
work. Simply, I will try to express my attitude towards him in several sentences:
Before visiting the exhibition, for me,
as for a painter, his painting was uninteresting. Though, as for a Georgian painter, his activity was important.
After viewing the exhibits I can say
that he is a painter of worldwide importance… a painter, who created the works
adequate for his period and actual not
only for his country.”
Museum’s Ermakov laboratory for processing. After experimental processing,
firstly two negatives were sent to me via
e-mail. I will never forget how a high resolution photo was opening in my computer, where each grass culm and pebble was depicted extremely clearly. It
appeared to be a photo taken in Samarkand, where the children were dancing
in the field,” Marita Damenia, the project
author, recollects.
A total of 687 glass negatives were
discovered at the museum’s depository. Naturally, the painter, who was
working on portraits, landscapes,
multi-figure compositions, who was
mastering battle painting at St. Petersburg Art Academy and composition at Munich Art Academy, who
traveled to Central Asia, Western Europe and Georgian mountainous regions (Khevsureti) would have certainly turned to nature photography. As a
result, along with esthetic photos, his
camera lenses caught extremely rich
ethnographic materials (characters,
geographical places or the XIX century clothes). Piquant photos of naked
models proved most unexpected and
effective. As known, after enrollment in
the Munich Art Academy in 1894, Gigo
Gabashvili, as a talented artist, was
awarded with a scholarship and a separate workshop with a model. Probably, the majority of his erotic photos
would have been created during that
period.
The Ministry of Culture of Georgia
and Mr. Nikoloz Rurua [the Minister],
the National Museum of Georgia and
the Tbilisi City Council have much contributed to the project implementation. The negatives were cleaned, processed and their electronic versions
created. The project was presented
by Geocell. As a result, a large scale
exposition was created and a small
hall of the Rustaveli Theatre was allocated for it. The painter’s personal
belongings, paintings and graphics,
and what is most important, his unique
photos were respectively exhibited in
three exhibition halls. The fourth hall
was allocated for showing a documentary about the painter specially shot
by Goderdzi Sharashia for this project.
Unfortunately, the exhibition lasted
only for one day, because the space,

Davit Lortkipanidze, Director General of the National Museum of Georgia
“This fact reaffirms that we have a lot
of interesting materials to expose. It
is a very important project. It concentrates top level painting, interesting
ethnographic materials and main discovery – unique photography.”
which was designed for exhibiting such
unique pieces of art, requires a huge responsibility in terms of their protection.
Public interest was extremely huge and
the calls are not still suspending with requests to repeat the exhibition.
Naturally, the exhibition turned out to
be as large scale, as Gigo Gabashvili’s
creative work was itself: the founder of
still life, landscape and realistic school in
Georgian painting, an excellent master
of portraits and multi-figure compositions created a lot of interesting works.
The most remarkable works of his painting belong to his famous Central Asian
cycle. As a result of the painter’s traveling to the Central Asia in 1894, he created his wonderful sketches depicting the
noisy streets and bazaars in Samarkand
and Bukhara and realistically portraying
a diverse life of the East. Following his
visits to Pshav-Khevsureti in 1898, the
famous Georgian painter, along with collecting ethnographic materials (weapons, costumes, vessels, etc.), created
the brilliant canvases of the Khevsurian
cycle, such as portraits of local Khevsurians and battle scenes. Each of his step
or sketch is preceded by a natural photo
taken by Gabashvili’s photo camera. And
this is the material proving the existence
of the European level photography – the
Georgian photography of the XIX century.
Discovery of negatives, their processing and arranging an exhibition is only
the beginning. The next stages of the
project will be much interesting. The
next stage of the project envisages publishing of a high-polygraphic, bilingual
(Georgian-English) album, which along
with his famous paintings will include
photo copies of his famous canvases,
as well as the photos received from the
negatives. Next year celebration of a
150-year anniversary of Gigo Gabashvili is planned that envisages organizing
the days of the painter in Europe and the
United States. Besides the fact that Europe will get acquainted with previously
unknown, top class photo artist of the
XIX century, it will finally put an end to the
opinion established among the artistic
circles that Gigo Gabashvili is a Russian
orientalist. During the anniversary year
it is also planned to rebury the famous
painter from the Vake cemetery to one
of the Pantheons of Tbilisi.

Woodstock, hippies, long hair, multicolored
clothes, peace and love; then punk and disco; later – the nineties and MTV generation.
If anybody tries to characterize our modern years in a couple of words, he/she will
say the following: polished mobile phones,
iPods in the ears, flexible laptops, heads
bowed towards them and eyes looking at a
blue website.
This is a generation of Facebook, whose
symbol is communication and information –
two most social or “humane” phenomena. It
may sound paradoxical, but if several years
ago much was spoken about the problems
of solitude and isolation of people belonging to the 21st century, today, owing to the
tremendous social network, people cannot be alone. They share information with
their families, friends, old classmates, new
acquaintances, bosses, world stars, politicians, brands or companies; they know
where they are, what they are doing, how
they are enjoying themselves, how they
spent the day and so on.
As it is frequently said about Facebook,
if Facebook were a country, it would be the
third, most populated region as it has 600
million active users.
I realized the omnipotence of Facebook
when one of my acquaintances told me – I
think, that those persons, who are not registered on Facebook, do not exist at all. By
this phase my acquaintance echoed the
modern world – particularly, he echoed the
fact that virtual world is gradually becoming
real and Facebook is becoming a place of
our holidays, tragedies, discussions, entertainments and shortly speaking, our routine
life. Facebook has really changed the rule
of life of a lot of people.
Probably just owing to this universal cultural influence, a traditional American edition
TIME named Mark Zuckerberg, a 26-year-old
founder of Facebook, among the most influential people in the world. Mark Zuckerberg
did not hesitate to make a comment in his
Facebook status: “Being named as TIME Person of the Year is a real honor and recognition
of how our little team is building something
that hundreds of millions of people want to
use to make the world more open and connected. I'm happy to be a part of that.” In
the history of the Person of the Year Zuckerberg is the second youngest person (the
first is 25-year-old Charles Lindbergh, who
won in 1927). British Queen Elizabeth II was

at his age, when she won this honorary title.
Though, she was two weeks older than Mark
by then. By the way, the Queen has recently
joined Zuckerberg’s social network.
The fact that neither did cinematography manage to bypass Facebook is quite
enough to make sure of the ultra-actuality
of the social network. In October 2010, a famous film director, David Fincher dedicated
a film Social Network, which won him the
Golden Globe, to Facebook.
However, Facebook’s universality does
not need so many assertions. Quite recently a baby born in Egypt on February 22 was
named Facebook – to immortalize the social
network’s important role, which it played during the Egyptian revolution. Or else, just look
at the screens of your computers, and analyze the feelings, which arouse upon appearing small, red squares on the upper left side
of the browser; what do you feel when your
photo, status or comment is liked?! Probably,
your Facebook is as native as your room?!
And since this is so, since Facebook is a
part of your life, now you can find your own
network – Geocell on Facebook and obtain
there any information, which you were previously receiving from TVs – you can learn
about all novelties and offers of your network; get involved in Geocell’s competitions; ask questions; express your opinions
and establish more active and closer communication with your native network.
This modern form of communication significantly simplifies the cooperation between the company and consumers; the
company becomes a real Facebook friend
about whom you will learn everything during a day, with whom you can share your information or concerns.
Obviously, each positive development has
a lot of negative sides and Facebook is also
accompanied by a severe criticism starting
from addiction threats and ending with security concerns. However, Patrick Driessen
responded to such criticism in the following way: “Social media should improve your
life, not become your life.”
Hence, in order to improve your life, Geocell - a supporter of novelties and a traditional mediator of communication - is on
Facebook waiting for you to make communication with you easier and information
more available. Join us! Anyway, we live in
the epoch of wireless, cellular and social
networks.

Picture of Proud Nature
Svaneti
Permanently snowy immense mountain
tops, Azali pastures, from where the midcentury towers are proudly looking over
the most beautiful valleys with the clouds
lying in the steep rocks. Here you will meet
a lot of architectural monuments, places
of worship and churches of middle feudal
area, as well as mid-century unique frescos and coins, which are still kept in the
local museum. It is situated in the Enguri
and Tskhenistskali Valleys. The villages
are located in the most beautiful green
fields surrounded by pine forests, nut forests and fascinating mountains – Shkhara, Ushba and Tetnuldi; Svaneti is inviting
you. Only the names of offered tours are
already enough to captivate you:
Tskhakvzagari-Koruldi Lakes-Mestia
Mestia-Tsvirmi-Zhaveshi/Adishi
Mestia – Mazeri
The latter route connects Mestia with
the Becho community villages in the Dolra
River basin. Along the route you can constantly see Ushba-Mazeri, one the most
remote and strict mountain massive of
the Caucasus Mountains. The route is the
nearest one to Ushba.
In frames of the tourist infrastructure
rehabilitation program, Mestia infrastructure was expanded by a hotel “Mestia,” a
hotel “Svaneti,” a café, an Internet café,
bike rental service, petrol station, new
routes developed by the Svaneti Tourist
Center and a souvenir shop. Moreover,
in frames of the same program, a satellite antenna was installed in Mestia, which
provides Internet services in Mestia.
What do you need for a comfortable rest?
Sightseeing and nature, plus comfort –
Svaneti is waiting for you.
Sightseeing and excursions by ropeway; the most delightful views will open in
front of you from the height of thousands
of meters. Then you will ascend a mountain top and have a dinner there; if you
stay there till the evening, you will see the
stars sitting on the top of a tower. You will
move down from the mountain by horse
– penetrate through the Georgian spirit
and you will understand what has created
such beauty.
It will take you 1.5 hours from Mestia to
get to the highest settlement in Europe, a
small historical village of Ushguli, which
is recognized by UNESCO as a world cultural treasure.
We recommend you a horse route,
which starts in the village of Zhabeshi
of the Mulakhi settlement, moves to the
South, crosses the rivers – Mulkhura and
Adishistskali watershed mountain system, and arrives at the village of Adishi;
from there – passing through the villages
of Khalde and Iprali it moves to the Enguri
Gorge and ends in Ushguli. The mentioned route will take you three days; forget urban environment, simply share and
enjoy it.
Ushguli is located at the bottom of the
Shkhara Mountain. The road connecting
with Lentekhi is opened only during three
months a year, while during the remained
period it is covered with snow. Locals in
Ushguli will tell you a legend about Devis
Nasheni – this is a rock, which blocked the
Enguri Valley as a result of which the village was flooding. Two noble rams moved
from Ushguli and Kala and collided with
the rock from the opposite corners, thus
saving the village. Ushguli is famous with
courageous hearts. Living at such height,
under such strict conditions will easily
scatter all fears. By visiting a free community, you will learn the price of a real freedom. Alpine fields are opening from the
bottom of Shkhara and they are mostly
snowy. Though in the hot summer days
the brightest green color spreads over the
entire valley and you can match up your
shadow to those of immense mountains.

If you like a walking tour and want to
merge with nature – just visit Borjomi!
The history of protected areas in Georgia
starts from the middle ages. After a century-old turbulent history the protected area
created by Mikhail Romanov was used for
establishing the first National Park in the
Caucasian region.
The Borjomi-Kharagauli National Park is
famous for its rich and diverse fauna species typical for Kolkheti and Caucasus; the
territory of the National Park is rich in native
forest and sub-alpine and alpine meadows
of South Caucasus.
Though, this is what you have already
seen or heard about. We offer you a new
picture, the end of spring, the period of rhododendron flowering.
We select one of the existing nine tourist
paths. This is a diverse path, which crosses
the National Park from Likani to Marilisi and
which is called Nikoloz Romanov’s path.
The tour will last for three days. You will
spend nights in the tourist shelters of Lomis
Mta and Sakhvrali. You can also choose the
path passing from Atskuri to Marelisi. If you
choose the Saint Andrew path, you will see
the highest top of the National Park – the
Sametskhvario Mountain; if you are esthetes,
we recommend you the panorama path – it is
a difficult, circular road with the most beautiful views from the Atskuri guard watch house
to the Amarati tourist shelter; an inviolable
forest path is awaiting you from the Niunisi
guard watch house to the Zanavi guard watch
house; the road from the Abastumani guard
watch house to the Didmagala tourist shelter
is called a path of the Zekari Pass. The Nakvalevi path will lead you to the Kvabiskhevi;
moreover, there is a one-day information
path for those, who want to view and study
the Park. One more circular path passes
through the Megruki River Gorge. The last
official route passes across the black hill; it
connects the Amarati and Lomis Mta tourist shelters and offers unforgettable sights.
The surroundings of the National Park will attract those people, who love historical monuments and ancient legends. The BorjomiKharagauli National Park has the best tourist
infrastructure. Besides comfortable shelters,
there is a hotel in Marelisi (Kharagauli district
of the Imereti Region). Just this place is a
starting point for those willing to have a walking tour in the National Park.

Modern and old, reconstructed buildings, parks, squares, hotels, entertainment facilities, the boulevard rehabilitated by European architects – Batumi is experiencing unusual infrastructural development. If you visited “the white city” last summer, a
lot of novelties will be awaiting you this year. By decision of the local authorities, Batumi should reach a level of European resorts,
comfortable and memorable for tourists.
Adjara is one of the most beautiful places in the Black Sea region. The seaside line passes through various resorts. You certainly know the famous resorts as you probably take a rest on the
blue coast quite frequently.
And again – there is a huge choice, but we will tell you about
those two places, which you should visit by all means in order to
replenish the reserves in a magic box of relaxation and recreation.
Mtsvane Kontskhi (Green Cape), one of the most beautiful
seaside resorts, is situated nine kilometers away from Batumi.
The entire area is covered by greenery. A botanical garden is laid
out on the most beautiful slopes of the cape. Though, still the
sea is most important here. The cleft is landing from the height to
the blue surface. You will have a feeling that the forest suddenly
ends, and the sand sticks to your wet feet.
Choose the damp marine subtropical climate and high mountainous Adjara. Three gorges – Acharistskali, Gorjomistskali and
Skhaltistskali – in the western part of the Arsiani ridge, creates
Khulo, while the Beshumi resort is situated in the alpine zone of
Khulo. It reaches the height of 1900 meters above sea level.
You will pass through the most beautiful Acharistskali Gorge,
as well as view Acharistskali tributaries forming waterfalls in
many places. In Beshumi you will see crystal clear air and learn
how it is possible to see decolorized whiteness. Coniferous forest, which forms a belt for the resort, ionizes the air. It means that
you will breathe so much air that you may miss the surface by
millimeters. It is an unforgettable feeling. Comfort and calmness
is created for you here. Believe that it is possible to swim in the
crystal air.

Here is Everything for Real Rest
Lopota,
Kvareli
We are in Telavi, turning to Kvareli. 4-5 more kilometers and we
will stop at the Alazani Bridge. The very first turning in the left from
the Telavi and Lagodekhi crossroad leads to Napareuli. Two more
kilometers and here it is – Lopota. Of course, you have heard about
it, but it is high time to visit this small paradise in the midst of Kakheti.
The territory of the complex provides all opportunities for the rest
and entertainment. You can start with cool baths; enjoy watching the
mountains rising on the horizon or go bike riding; then sit at the table
laid with the tastiest dishes in the hotel’s Marani and taste the best
wine. But before approaching the Marani, you will come across a
small storehouse, where fishing rods, hooks, horse-hair and baits
are kept. You probably guessed, did not you? – It’s time for fishing!
If you have never entered into the water and seen the twinkling of
golden fins, you will have the best chance to experience it. Supply
yourself with the relevant equipment; there is a bridge at the coast,
which leads into the water. You can settle down here. However, if
you make your way by boat through the green surface – you will find
yourself in the midst of this magic world. Get free of urban noise and
dust. You will have to forget about everyday problems for successful
fishing in a beautiful and calm environment.
Bream, striped perch and hybrid perch – how does this sound to
you? If you catch this fish, we may fulfill your desire – to make this
calmness endless and give you an opportunity to run away from the
urban noise.
After your fishing is over, trust me and move to the Kvareli Lake.
You will not be able to see land balconies cut as an amphitheatre
in Lopota. When you settle down in the Kvareli Lake Complex, you
will go out from the room to the green grass, sit down in a wooden
armchair and look at the rainbow of colors; a stripe of one color will
fall into various rays; you will see a blue sky, green mirror surface
and white mist, which steams up the mirror. You will forget that your
goal is to have a rest; you will cast a glance at the entire territory and
will certainly want to write a poem, which will be sounded either in
the words, or in the melody that will awaken in you upon mentioning
the Kvareli Lake.
If the expectation has reduced the distance, only two hours separate you from what we have described.

Mountain Ballade
Tusheti
One of the highest roads of Georgia passes through the Abano
Pass. As soon as you cross it, Tusheti will open in front of you.
The population lives in the Birikvi, Dartlo, Parsma and Giriki
Gorges for already several centuries. Some villages have already
been deserted and this emptiness looks like an ethnographic museum. If you ascend the stone stairs, you will get to the wooden
balcony, you will feel an onion smell and stop for a while – it cannot
be explained, but you will see the pictures of the past on this balcony, black and white photos will be revived and Tushetian clothes
will become colorful. Everyday life has a smell of land and grass;
you hear the voice of nature and here you wake up, move to that
side of the balcony, which looks over the horizon; probably, you
will not believe, but the most beautiful view open from each house;
boundless valleys and lined land are seen from any places, though
from various angles. You will find silence in a desert village and you
will guess what the voice is, which the city has overgrown into the
noise as a result of which you have forgotten a real natural voice.
Let’s start from Alvani; then Omalo-Shenako-Diklo; and leave
Gometseri Gorge, Keselo castles and Dochu for the next day.
The road is passing through the city of Telavi towards the village of Alvani, moving across the slopes of the Caucasus Mountains. The first village will be Omalo. Then, the route goes from
Omalo to the village of Parsma crossing the territory of the National Park. Mountainous Tusheti, which is surrounded by mountain ridges and tops, is rugged by numerous gorges, the waters
from which flow into the two major rivers of Tusheti – Pirikiti’s
Alazani and Tusheti’s (Gometsari) Alazani separated with the
watershed of Makratela. Both Alazanis merge near the village of
Shenako. This is the next stop. Tusheti Protected Areas cover
Tusheti Strict Nature Reserve, Tusheti National Park and Tusheti
Protected Landscape. Their total area is about 122,050 ha. Now
imagine how such a huge territory can be viewed at a glance.
It is enough to ascend any mountain top and Omalo-Diklo plain
will open in front of you. You will move your eyes towards the
Tsokalta-Kumelaurti plain and cast a glance at the confluence of
mountain and plain. The green Tushetian rug will be replaced by
open slopes. Now, look in this direction and you will see a Caucasian snowcock; a Caucasian black grouse lives in birch wood.
Capra aegagrus (wild goat) is also here. Everything sounds extremely exotic and attractive, but be sure that nobody will be able
to describe Tusheti better than your own feelings. You should
see and feel it yourself.
Family hotels are well-equipped in Tusheti. Though, we recommend you to take a tent and use special places in the protected
areas to spend the night. If wild nature attracts you, nothing compares with the night sky in Tusheti. We also recommend you to
take a helicopter on your way back. What you have already seen

It is obvious that expressing any protest at the festival, the
creation of which was already a protest action, will almost
be envisaged by its agenda. However, compared to previous
years, the 2011 Cannes International Film Festival passed
in an undoubtedly calm atmosphere. The critics concerned
about a shameful competition program and awarding ceremony of the Oscar a couple of months ago were pleasantly
surprised in Cannes. To say nothing about the Oscar, the
last year developments in Cannes triggered especially great
pessimism among the cinema-lovers: the French beach and
cinema world will remember May 2011 for a long time – there
is almost not a single person, who was not shocked at the
decision made by American film director Tim Burton, who
was Jury President for the Festival de Cannes. Awarding of
less famous Thai film director, Apichatpong Weerasethakul
with Palme d'Or (Golden Palm) prize caused bewilderment
among western critics and more popularization of eastern
cinematography, which has already turned into a trend recently. It should also be noted that along with Mr. Weerasethakul, Mike Leigh (with one of his best works “Another
Year”) and Ken Loach (“Route Irish”) were also competing
for this prize. In addition, the festival was opened with Ridley
Scott’s Robin Hood – a legend about what was happening
in Robin’s life before becoming an outlaw, or else “unknown
details from the life of the King of Sherwood Forest outlaws.”
This shameful return by Ridley Scott, which is yet another
and already forgotten film in the wave of a well-observed
tendency of western cinematography last spring (let’s remember “Alice in Wonderland” filmed by Tim Burton, which
returns already grown up Alice to the wonderland and like
Ridley Scott, acquaints us with “unknown” but extremely
monotonous details of the famous fairy tale), did not prove
successful for the last year festival. But the audience in
Cannes never expects the festival to be opened with a good
film: as a rule, the festival, which is the greatest supporter of
art house, opens with commercially justified and spectacular
films. In 2011 this tradition was continued by Woody Allen’s
“Midnight in Paris”, which as critics say, is distinguished
only by the film director’s name and the episode performed
by First Lady of France, Carla Bruni. The failure of Allen’s

film, which enabled the audience to have a good sleep and
brace up, was no surprise for anybody – the last year work
by the film director “You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger” –
was a creative necrology of an intellectual New Yorker, after
which nobody was expecting any masterpiece from almost
80-year-old Woody Allen.
However, if we judge by the remaining competition program, the 64th Cannes Film Festival was one of the most interesting and unexpected in its history.
Unlike the last year, this year you would not hear anything
about press representatives rising against the strict attendance rules, about the Ministry of Culture concerned about
showing a politically “incorrect” film or about the unsatisfied
organizers of the festival. It can be said that the Cannes Jury
with Robert De Niro as the President got “the tastiest piece”:
Pedro Almodóvar, Aki Kaurismäki, Dardenne Brothers, Terrence Malick, etc – 20 contest films with 3 authors - Lars
von Trier, Nanni Moretti and Dardenne Brothers (twice nominees) becoming the Palme d'Or winners.
Actually, it was impossible almost till the last second to
guess the results of the awarding – it was not like the last
year, when the audience was surprised by the results, but it
happened largely because of several obvious favorites as nobody knew, who would take the main prize home: Dardenne
Brothers or Finnish film director Aki Kaurismäki. American
Terrence Malick, a favorite of American and French film critics, was named as the third leader.
Finally, “Long Live Friendship!” – De Niro’s friend, Terrence Malick won the Palme d'Or for the best film of the 2011
Cannes Film Festival “The Tree of Life.” Turkish Nuri Bilge
Ceylan's “Once Upon a Time in Anatolia” and the greatest
favorites of the Cannes Film Festival, Jean-Pierre and Luc
Dardenne’s “The Kid With a Bike” were awarded with the
Grand Jury Prize.
French actor Jean Dujardin won Cannes’ best actor award;
as far as the best actress nomination is concerned – everything starts here… Cannes would not be Cannes if at least
one small scandal did not take place there, and France
would not be France, if the event passed there without any
provocation! But after John Galliano’s scandalous incident
and after almost leading him to the guillotine, nobody expected that while speaking at a press conference in Cannes
dedicated to the festival film “Melancholy”, Lars von Trier

would have admitted his ‘sympathy’ for Adolf Hitler saying
that “I am a Nazi!” An American actress, Kirsten Dunst, who
got extremely nervous because of Trier’s remarks at the
press conference, probably expected the removal of the film
”Melancholy” from the list of festival films and public expulsion from Cannes rather than its awarding with Palme d'Or.
But the fact is certain – the star of “The Virgin Suicides” and
“Marie Antoinette” as well as a girlfriend of “Spiderman”,
Kirsten Dunst will be written in the film history as an actress
owing Palme d'Or.
We hope that this step simply means the strengthening
of Cannes’ ideological line, the positions of apolitical, art
house supporting festival; that “Melancholy” is such strong
film, that its removal from the contest program despite of
the film director’s provocative remarks, would have been
unfair. Otherwise, it is unclear, what has poor Galliano done
and what a valid reason does Trier have? A sharp reaction
of the festival “in frame of politeness” (the film director had
to live the Cannes Festival) is also obscure, as its idea was
a response reaction to the success of Nazi-propagandistic
films: Cannes Festival is the result of the shock caused by
the revival of the films shot by Leni Riefenstahl and Benito
Mussolini’s son in the late thirties in Venice. On initiative of
the French Education Minister, a film festival was created
aimed at competing with the Venice Festival and turning into
the world apolitical cinematographic forum. The first festival was set to be held in 1939 and Louis Lumière agreed to
be the president. Though, the World War II thwarted it and
the event was first held in 1946. Since then, the festival is
being held in May annually (with one exception – in 1968
the festival was halted because of the May developments in
Paris, when Louis Malle, Roman Polański, Jean-Luc Godard,
Claude Berri, Jean-Gabriel Albicocco and Claude Lelouch
expressed their solidarity to the French student movement.
The festival was not also held in 1948-1950 years because of
financial problems.)
“The Festival is an apolitical no-man’s-land, a microcosm
of what the world would be like if people could make direct
contact with one another and speak the same language,”
Jean Cocteau said. This is the Utopian line, which the Cannes
Film Festival is following unlike Berlinale.
Such insignificant details, like, for example, love to Hitler
and Nazism, have nothing to do with “Art for Art’s Sake” (or
maybe, “Art for Artists’ Sake?”)!

You are always waiting for summer – even when you are looking at
a grey landscape beyond the window on a frosty winter day and trying to defeat a seasonal asthenia with a cup of aromatic tea, when
you are walking in the street on a light spring day and the aroma of
acacia flowers in the air fills you with optimism. This is quite natural,
because summer is the period, which is associated with school holidays and the most careless and rare fun. You have an opportunity to
forget about problems, everyday troubles and do what you had no
time to do during the whole year. Some go to a sunny coast; others
join Latin dance lessons or hurry away towards bookshelves, where
so many new books have accumulated.
Although building the plans for the summer is one of the most
pleasant processes, very often they are hardly realizable. You
may have decided firmly to learn 500 new Spanish words, but
very often the autumn may come and your serious plans may remain unrealized. A surprise excursion in the mountains, running
in the rain under the rainbow, a party at the friend’s summer cottage – who can count, how many spontaneous events are hampering the realization of your plans built scrupulously a couple of
months ago. Despite it, preliminary generation of ideas enables
us to spend a diverse and interesting summer.

Idea 1 – Renew your wardrobe
You want to buy something that will remind you of the excellent
days spent in the summer, a thing that will interest both males and
females during this season and this is a sleeveless shirt known in
the United States colloquially as “a wife beater.” Besides the fact
that this is the most fashionable item during this summer, it will enable you to experiment. During this season you can wear “wife beater” with sport or elegant trousers, free skirts, hippie clothes, etc. It
is not traditionally white any more. We have viewed monochromic
and bright colors, with inscriptions, painted in various manners. You
can watch the development of interesting ideas in the collections of
Celine, Balmain, Iceberg, N21 and Devastee.

There is a huge choice because a lot of new compositions
were released this year for the listeners with various musical
tastes. House star Hugh Laurie's blues album 'Let Them Talk’
is quite interesting – an excellent mixture of classical jazz and
blues, which is already available from May 9. After a five-year
pause The Strokes, an American rock band, offered a pleasant
surprise to its listeners – it released a new, fourth album Angles.
There are at least two reasons why you should listen to it: a tasty
post-punk, which will attract with its lightness not only the listeners of this genre – this is a funny, energetic music, which will create high spirits during the sunny summer days.
Idea 3 – Apply aromatherapy
There are a lot of means of aromatherapy with purchasing a
perfume as the simplest one. Hermes offered us the most interesting flavor for this summer – it is Voyage d’Hermes. It has
very interesting, ambivalent aroma, which simultaneously leaves
a feeling of warmth and has a fragrance of not so cold weather.
The composition opens with the ginger and citrus notes moving to the light flavor of cardamom and bergamot tea. Owing to
the white musk and ginger notes, the aroma acquires an accomplished and warm nature. Voyage d’Hermes belongs to unisex
perfumes that is quite natural – abstract art has no frameworks;
respectively, it cannot have any sex .
Idea 4 – Watch a new interesting film
Victor Ginzburg started to work over this film in
2006 and it was released quite recently. This
is the first film adaptation of Generation ‘П’
by Russian author Victor Pelevin. Like the
book, the film also offers quite a complex
plot. Unlike “99 Francs”, the literary
version is much better than the director’s version. Though, the film
is quite interesting to watch
because it makes you observe the influence of television and advertisement
on the formation of human
mentality, as well as how western brands are being adapted with
the conscience of people of different
nationalities.

then it will be quite easy to find a local, who will gladly give you
housing. Couch surfers are traveling around the world with the
help of each other. Saving money on hotels is not the only positive side – those, who cannot invite others to their own homes,
are helping the guests in another way – they act as guides in
their own city, of course, free of charge. One can read feedbacks
on couch surfers’ website that is quite useful for those people,
who do not trust strangers much.
Idea 6 – Taste fashionable drink
Taste the beautiful life – this is the slogan of Martini Gold. If
you have not tasted it yet, you should do it by all means, because
the contents of the bottle designed by DOLCE&GABBANA is distinguished by an extremely rich aroma. Bergamot perfume from
Calabria, perfume made from the intense fragrances of Sicilian
lemons, sweets and oranges from the Sicilian hills, delicate saffron from Spain, mystic myrrh from Ethiopia, ginger from India
and enthralling pepper cubeb from Indonesia gives an unrepeatable taste to the drink. By mixing it with prosecco, golden Martini becomes much tastier and more solemn that makes it a real
summer drink.
Idea 7 – Use technological novelties
Our favorite things are often destroyed as a result of summer
picnics and a fun on the beach. The company Motorola knows it

very well. That is why it created Motorola Defy - a new android
smart phone, which besides a good design and technical profile,
has one feature, which we need so much in the nature - resistance. Its sensor screen is protected with a firm glass against hitting. And that’s not all. The smart phone is dustproof and waterproof. Shortly speaking, it has everything you can dream about
in summer, except for the camera, which has only 5 megapixels.
Samsung has an interesting proposal in this respect – a digital
camera ST30, with 10 megapixel matrix and 3 optical zooms. Of
course, the market offers us more serious products as well, but
Samsung has one advantage - ST30 is an ultra-compact device,
which has a size of a mobile phone and can easily be kept in a
pocket.
Idea 8 – Become ecocentric
This idea emerges automatically, when we walk in the nature,
as we constantly see the environment full of polyethylene bags,
as well polluted sea that disinclines us to swim. We fail to adequately assess our contribution to the environmental pollution.
A paper from a chewing-gum thrown in the street can finally create a deplorable picture, because hundreds and thousands of
people are acting so. Most important is to acknowledge that
ecocentrism is the same as egocentrism – as a result we receive
a healthy body and healthy environment. Use bio-products; do
not leave your electrical appliances in standby mode; buy the
clothes made of processed materials – it is both fashionable and
rational.
The most rational ideas for summer are those, which emerge unexpectedly. Geocell wishes you sunny holidays full of spontaneity!

Dato Turashvili, willy-nilly (I mean, intentionally or unintentionally – but these are not literary words and they lead
us somewhere else) managed to become a famous writer
of our time, when media outlets mostly focus on politics and
pseudo show business. This is extremely difficult in our time,
especially if you are a good author (Jeans Generation) and
complete with Joanne Rowling, whose books broke all sales
records… In one word, Dato, Mr. Dato Turashvili, for some
people and simply Turika for others.
We are talking at the literary café on Tarkhnishvili Street…
Dato is answering shortly, though comprehensively.
- Your appearance coincided with an absolutely non-literary
period. Maybe, you can recollect what was happening then
in terms of literature, I mean the late eighties and the early
nineties.
Since the nineties of the last century I remember a scene,
which I witnessed on the Melikishvili Street in Tbilisi during
the civil war – armed people were walking on the Rustaveli
Avenue, while Kote Kubaneishvili and Irakli Charkviani were
moving from the opposite side with books under their arms.
The third person (Paata Kurdadze), whom I did not know then,
was accompanying them…
- Do you think that a creator should play an active role in the
life of his country or at least get involved in the social or political life, or is it their personal choice?
Previously, I was thinking quite simply that writing is most
important for the writer and it is up to him to decide whether to
get involved in the public and political life or not. Now, sometimes it seems to me that probably the writer should comment
on certain developments in his texts (for example, it happens
so in Latin America).
- Let’s turn to the books. Are there fewer buyers or readers
today?
To the best of my belief, today there is mostly a problem of
a buyer rather than a reader in Georgia.

- Your book, Jeans Generation, is a local bestseller. Besides
a good text, what is needed to sell the books well in Georgia?
Are the relevant publishing houses active enough?
Unfortunately (and this is my subjective opinion), publishes
are not active enough and do not sufficiently care for popularization of this or that book.

- Internet – danger or new road for the readers - much is
spoken today about it – a murderer of a book or something
like that.
If we use Internet reasonably, it will only help us and if we
get frightened of it, of course, we will incur losses.

- In your opinion, what will be the future of literature, the

I will say what I want to see in the 21st century – harmonious
co-existence of the book and Internet, because a human being needs both water and bread…

The BlackBerry PlayBook is RIM’s first tablet, and does
pretty well in the hardware specs. It has a 1024 x 600
display, a dual-core 1 GHz processor with 1 GB of RAM,
plus twin 5 megapixel and 3 megapixel cameras, each capable of capturing 1080p video. On the software side of
things, the PlayBook is running a brand new QNX-based
OS, which excels at multitasking, and has a slick, gesturedriven user interface. App selection is improving, but still
isn’t remotely comparable to what’s available on BlackBerry smartphones. That may change soon enough as the
PlayBook adds support for Android apps.

Nike, sportswear and equipment supplier, has teamed
up with TomTom, one of the world leaders in GPS mapping systems, to provide runners with the ideal digital
performance coach. Although there are specific runner
watches already on the market, Nike focused on style.
Large digital numbers and a dark black band with a
green/yellow underside screams latest fashion.
It is like your own personal trainer on your wrist! The
SportWatch GPS will bug you with run reminders when
you have not logged a run in five days, you will get "attaboys" for achieving run records, and you can plug the
watch directly into your computer to interface with nikeplus.com.
As for the hardware, the SportWatch's GPS works in
combination with a shoe sensor to keep logging your
location even when you are running in the city and you
can tap the display to illuminate the backlight or set a
new lap.

Swedish-based Handheld Group has introduced
the Algiz XRW rugged laptop that is so tough that it
is looking for trouble.
Weighing only 1.5 kilograms, the Algiz XRW hosts
a fully sealed keyboard and touchpad for protection against water, sand and dust. While it can only
sustain drops from 1.2 meters, it can easily be used
in deserts or slopes being able to survive in temperatures ranging from -21 °C to 70 °C. It should be
especially useful outdoors as the 10.1-inch widescreen display utilizes sunlight-readable MaxView
technology.
Here is an overview of what else is inside the device: Intel Atom Z550 2GHz processor, Windows 7
Ultimate OS, 2GB of DDR2 memory, 64GB SSD,
Wi-Fi, Gobi 2000 3G module (optional), Bluetooth,
GPST, two USB 2.0 ports, 2-megapixel autofocus
webcam, and up to eight hours of battery life.
