TUCSONSYMPHONYORCHESTRA George Hanson, Music Director & Conductor A N N U A L R E P O RT The Tucson Symphony Orchestra’s 2013/14 season got off to a busy start with a Concertmaster recital, the opening of the Mrs. Dorothy Dyer Vanek Classic Series and a Just for Kids Opening Festival all in the first week. New TSO Concertmaster Lauren Roth gave a free recital for subscribers on September 29th at the Tucson Symphony Center (TSC). TSO Music Director and Conductor George Hanson introduced Lauren to a full house in the Performance Hall and Paula Fan, principal keyboard, accompanied her. 1 Welcome Thank you for a wonderful 2013/14 Season! The musicians, Board and staff are honored to serve Tucson and southern Arizona communities with performances and education programs of the highest caliber. The 2013/14 season was filled with many extraordinary experiences and we want to share some of the highlights with you. Thank you for your continuing support to secure the TSO’s place as the cornerstone of Tucson’s rich cultural landscape now and for generations to come. Frautschi, a two-time Grammy® nominee, made her TSO debut performing Alexander Glazunov’s Violin Concerto. The Arizona Daily Star said she played with “terrific technical prowess and a warm, vibrant tone.” The review went on to praise George Hanson for leading an “energetic, taut and well-paced performance” of the program’s title piece, Dmitri Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 7, “Leningrad.” 2 3 3 One patron quipped on opening weekend, “You must have had every horn player in the state of Arizona in the hall for Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 7!” The action shifted from the Tucson Music Hall to the Tucson Symphony Center the next morning for the first ever Just for Kids Opening Festival. The Wind Quintet’s performance of Pinocchio filled up two shows in the Performance Hall. The beloved classic, complete with costumes and characters, came to life through the music of Haydn, Debussy, Shostakovich and other composers. After the shows, the festivities continued outside the TSC with kids spinning the wheel to win a prize, face painting, a roaming magician, a balloon artist and more. My 92.9 broadcast live from the event and the Tucson Food Truck Roundup offered everything from hot dogs to gourmet cuisine and dessert. 4 Tucson Symphony Orchestra 2175 North Sixth Avenue | Tucson, AZ 85705-5606 Administrative Office: 520.792.9155 Box Office: 520.882.8585 tucsonsymphony.org facebook.com/tucsonsymphonyorchestra 4 1 6 10 5 AN INSPIRATIONAL MASTERPIECE 9 11 8 13 7 12 The Just for Kids Season concluded with The Really Big Just for Kids Grand Finale in May at the Fox Tucson Theatre. 5 Every Classic Series program and four of the five MasterWorks Series programs this season featured a TSO premiere. These included Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 7, “Leningrad,” Pärt’s If Bach Had Raised Bees, the concerto from the film, The Red Violin, The Damnation of Faust, Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 25, The Ring Without Words, Sibelius’ Lemminkäinen Suite (Legends) and Philip Glass’ Double Concerto for Violin and Cello. Rising Metropolitan Opera mezzo-soprano Jennifer Johnson Cano made her TSO debut singing the role of Marguerite in The Damnation of Faust. 6 2 The Glass Double Concerto marked the TSO debut of cellist Wendy Sutter and violinist Tim Fain, two of the composer’s most frequent collaborators. In 2010, they gave the premiere performance and recorded it. Andrew Grams, one of the Music Director candidates, conducted the program. Critics responded favorably to the TSO performing a contemporary piece: The Arizona Daily Star called the chemistry between the two performers “thrilling,” while the Green Valley News and Sun said the programming of this newer composition was “a deep bow to the 21st century.” 7 It snowed for the first time ever inside Tucson Music Hall this season! Some 60 8 youngsters from the Boys and Girls Club got a sneak preview of the snowfall, a backstage tour, and then enjoyed a rehearsal for The Magic of Christmas. Before the rehearsal began, they were treated to a trial run of the white stuff. The holiday program featured the TSO Chorus,Tucson Arizona Boys Chorus, Tucson Regional Ballet, Mayor Jonathan Rothschild, Santa Claus and some of Tucson’s favorite dancers. The TSO brightened the season for other youngsters as well by collecting donations for the U.S. Marine Corps’ annual Toys for Tots campaign. Javier Vélez, Board Trustee and former active-duty Marine, donned his USMC dress blues for the December Just for Kids 9 program to help encourage donations and inspire the children. TSO staff helped deliver the toys to the Marines. The TSO’s annual performance of Handel’s Messiah at Catalina Foothills High School opened with the TSO’s impressive brass players performing a rich selection of music including the Overture from Handel’s Music for the Royal Fireworks, Bach’s Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring and additional short works by Gabrieli and Byrd. George Hanson conducted the program, Messiah and Sounds of the Season; Bruce Chamberlain, TSO Chorus Director, conducted the chorus and four soloists in Handel’s magnificent choral work. 10 Grammy® winner Victor Vanacore opened the TSO SuperPops! with Hot! Hot! Hot! More Tony Award-winning music kept the heat on with Michael Cavanaugh, star of the Billy Joel musical Movin’ Out and the original stars of Jersey Boys, now known as the Midtown Men. Cherish the Ladies, closed the SuperPops! series with their stunning step dancing that even included a turn by George Hanson just in time for St. Patrick’s Day and the first day of Spring. 11 Itzhak Perlman performed Beethoven’s Violin Concerto for a sold-out house at the Music Hall on January 14. Demand for tickets was so great, some patrons were glad they were at least able to get one of the folding chairs that were added for the occasion. 12 In January, 130 patrons filled the Performance Hall at the Symphony Center for “A TSO Conversation: Music Director Search.” The town hall-style meeting featured the search committee chair John Palmer and TSO musicians. The hour-long Q&A covered how candidates are chosen, what they do during the week they spend in Tucson as guest conductors, if there is a lot of interest in the position (yes!) and what the search committee is looking for in a music director. Number one is musical excellence followed closely by an ability to communicate with the audience was the answer to the final question. 13 The program initiated a new “TSO Conversation” series that continued with 3 Music Education Total Education And Community Engagement Attendance 15 14 59,288 Education 39,850 16 17 Community Engagement 19,438 Education Programs Last year, TSO’s nationally recognized education programs reached more than 39,000 students and educators in 119 schools from Southern Pinal County to the Arizona-Mexico border. TSO programs are designed for toddlers through college age students. In 2014, the TSO was honored with the Arts Education Program award at the Tucson Pima Arts Council’s annual Lumies Arts and Business Awards. Young Composers Project The TSO Young Composers Project is unique because it uses the orchestra as a living laboratory—providing interaction between students and professionals including TSO musicians, guest artists and conductors—to explore the creative process of composition. Districts Served by the tso during the 2013/2014 School year Ajo George Hanson leading a discussion at the Loft Cinema after the Tucson premiere of the new documentary, Following the Ninth: In the Footsteps of Beethoven’s Final Symphony. Using the topic of the film and the theme of the TSO’s 2014 Young People’s Concerts—“Can Music Change the World?”— they discussed the impact Beethoven’s Ninth continues to have. The Loft also hosted a screening of The Red Violin prior to Steven Moeckel’s Classic Series performance of the concerto from the film. George Hanson introduced the new season to patrons who attended a breakfast 14 4 presentation at the Tucson Symphony Center in February. his creative pursuits and a marked capacity for self-direction. Drs. John P. and Helen S. Schaefer, long time sponsors of the TSO MasterWorks Series, received the 9th annual Shelley Award at the 2014 Governor’s Arts Awards for their long term and broad support and advancement of the arts in Arizona. University of Arizona percussionist Trevor Barroero, one of the three winners in the 26th annual TSO Young Artists Competition, performed on the KGUN9 show, Morning Blend, before the Celebrate the Future concert. Two other Young Artists Competition winners, pianists Hannah Lee and Rebecca Shiao, were also featured in the Celebrate the Future concert. 15 Jeremy Denk brought the Classic Series to a close performing Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 25. Denk is a 2013 MacArthur Fellow Genius Award grant winner, selected for his extraordinary originality, dedication in 16 17 Amphi Baboquivari Catalina Foothills Continental Douglas Flowing Wells Marana Nogales Sahuarita Sunnyside Tanque Verde Tucson Unified Vail Charter, private, and home schools throughout Southern Arizona 2013/2014 TSO Young Composers after their Q&A with Itzhak Perlman This year, Itzhak Perlman was among the guest artists who met with the students. The questions ranged from “What is your responsibility onstage?” to “Do you like to play alone or with others,” “What inspires you,” and “Do you have any practice tips?” “Practice slowly,” replied the virtuoso. “If you practice slowly, you remember longer. If you put a sponge in water quickly, it isn’t soaked. If you let it SIT in water, it will be heavy and completely full of water. Also, decide what you want to accomplish during your time practicing. It is better to have practice time with a goal than lots of time but with no purpose.” The YCP class culminates in reading sessions and recordings of the newly composed pieces. At the sessions in May, the String Quintet performed 14 new works at the Tucson Symphony Center. The next day the orchestra premiered 13 compositions in two sessions at Catalina Foothills High School. Amit Peled’s Master Class for four cello students drew the series’ biggest audience yet to the Tucson Symphony Center Performance Hall Music in the Schools & Young People’s Concerts The Wind and String Quintets, and Brass and Percussion Ensemble each visited 35 elementary schools to present interactive concerts with a common unifying theme. This year’s theme was “Can Music Change the World?” Students also attended the Young People’s Concerts and heard how musical ideas come together in a full TSO performance. 12,939 students, teachers and parents attended this year’s performances conducted by Michael Hall. Master Class Series Johanna Lundy, principal horn, and James Karrer, principal bass, plus guest artists Jennifer Frautschi, Gabriela Martinez, Steven Moeckel, Jennifer Johnson Cano and William Burden all gave Master Classes during the season. Cellist Amit Peled gave the final Master Class of the year and drew the series’ biggest audience yet to the Tucson Symphony Center Performance Hall for the Saturday afternoon session with four cello students. The Master Class Series—a partnership with the University of Arizona School of Music—offers Arizona’s emerging musicians a special opportunity to work one-on-one with world-renowned soloists. KINDERKONZERTS! 3,373 K-2 students, and teachers from 40 schools all across Tucson and Southern Arizona descended on the Tucson Symphony Center in late April for nine KinderKonzerts. This year’s KinderKonzerts included a musical version of Little Red Cowboy Hat, a southwestern retelling of Little Red Riding Hood by local author Susan Lowell. The concert was performed for the public at the Fox Tucson Theatre at the TSO’s Really Big Just for Kids Grand Finale. 5 Making Music Mine Teachers participating in Music in the Schools, Young People’s Concerts and KinderKonzerts receive a year-long curriculum created by the TSO and aligned with Arizona Arts Standards to help students develop cognitive skills as they explore the world of music. BAND & ORCHESTRA CLINICS These interactive sessions bring TSO musicians right into the classroom to work with young instrumentalists. Designed for middle and high school ensembles, clinics include a performance, Q&A, and coaching by the TSO’s knowledgeable and experienced musicians. The Wind, String and Brass Quintets held clinics at Ajo Middle/High School, Amphi, Apollo, Laufer and Sierra Middle Schools and Cholla High School. Young Artists Competition Young musicians perform for instructive feedback and compete for cash prizes and an opportunity to perform with the TSO at the Celebrate the Future concert. Just for Kids Twelve free Saturday morning interactive TSO ensemble concerts, filled with fun, exploration and story-telling, introduced quality classical music to families with young children. TSO Ensembles entertained children with the Just for Kids programs Pinocchio, Welcome to Planet Earth, Glissando, Gerald McBoing-Boing, The Enchanted Kingdom and The Princess and the Frog. Concert comments Music Director and Conductor George Hanson, guest conductors and guest artists offered anecdotes, commentary and insight into the music one hour before all Classic and MasterWorks Series concerts. TSO Public School Tax Credit Program This program raised tax credit dollars from patrons to support public schools who wish to participate in the TSO’s education programs but need financial assistance. In 2013-14, it helped 43 individual schools to participate in Young People’s Concerts, ensemble clinics, Music in the Schools, and KinderKonzerts. Support Organizations Community Engagement Community Partnerships The TSO assists in achieving cultural and community-building goals through concert presentations. This season, audiences in Oro Valley, Green Valley and Sahuarita enjoyed TSO MasterWorks, SuperPops! and Just for Kids plus performances by the orchestra with violinist Elena Urioste and mezzo-soprano Jennifer Johnson Cano. The TSO community partners for these programs are the Southern Arizona Arts and Cultural Alliance, Green Valley Recreation and the Town of Sahuarita. Southern Arizona Residency The TSO builds relationships through the Southern Arizona Residency, by traveling to Ajo, Bisbee, Green Valley, Tubac and other locales. The TSO provides school concerts, curriculum and teaching materials, workshops for young musicians, and orchestra concerts for entire communities. Since the beginning of the award-winning Southern Arizona Residency in the late 1990s, the TSO has worked with thirty-four communities throughout Arizona. Partnerships with arts organizations and service agencies The TSO is the region’s resource for professional classical musicians for performances and speaking engagements. Partnerships include: VisitTucson (formerly the Metropolitan Tucson, Convention and Visitors Bureau), Southern Arizona’s Chambers of Commerce, the Tucson Pima Arts Council, Rotary Clubs and resorts and retirement communities including Splendido, Academy Village and the Lodge at Ventana Canyon. TSO’s Moveable Musical Feasts were held at the Hacienda del Sol and the Tubac Golf Resort and Spa. TSO musicians performed during the Tucson Regional Ballet’s annual production of A Southwest Nutcracker during the holiday season. The TSOL warmly welcomes women and men who believe music contributes to the well-being of all people, to the improved education of children and to the economic growth and vitality of our community. Members give time and talent to contribute financial resources and manpower to the TSO’s extensive and acclaimed artistic and music education programs on the stage and in the community. The TSOL raised over $35,000 in 2013/14 through the Nutcracker Holiday Luncheon, the Meet the Artist event with violinist Steven Moeckel and the Symphony Store. The TSOL sponsored the Classic Series program Moeckel Plays The Red Violin. League members assisted with the Young Artists Competition, Young Composers Project, Young People’s Concerts, KinderKonzerts, Just for Kids, helped with auditions and presented gift baskets to guest artists. This year TSOL donated over 6,000 volunteer hours to the TSO. TSO Ushers Over 100 volunteer ushers gave 4,500 hours of service during the 2013/14 season greeting patrons, taking tickets, showing them to their seats and handing out program books. Friends and Admirers of the Tucson Symphony Orchestra (FATSO) in Green Valley, “introduces people to an evening of carefree enjoyment of music, dining and conversation with new and old friends,” Board president Addy Murtaugh explained in the December 2013 issue of Green Valley Life. “Congeniality, comfort, good food and music with no transportation woes.” FATSO’s mission is to expand the presence of the TSO in Green Valley and by doing so to increase support, particularly attendance at the TSO’s Friday evening concerts. Starting with 10 people in 1998, FATSO has grown to more than 120 members. It provided bus transportation to and from six concerts this season making it more convenient and safer for those who do not want to drive to the city at night. Members also go out to dinner before each concert. The SaddleBrooke Symphony Guild (SSG) provides residents the opportunity to strengthen the community’s awareness and support of the Tucson Symphony Orchestra. Guild members attended Rachmaninoff’s Symphony No. 2, Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 5, “Emperor,” with guest soloist Gabriela Martinez, Mahler’s Symphony No. 5 and the SuperPops! program The Midtown Men. The Guild also hosted ensemble performances by the Flute Viola Harp Trio and Brass Quintet in SaddleBrooke. The Tucson Symphony Cotillion Ball Advisory Committee (TSCBAC) is committed to maintaining and protecting the traditions, beauty and high standards of the Cotillion Ball and supporting the TSO by raising funds through this beautiful event. The Committee familiarizes the participating Junior Patronesses and their families with the TSO and oversees the Tucson Symphony Honors Cotillion held on the Friday after Thanksgiving at La Paloma each year. In 2013, this major fundraising event raised $17,000. Steven Moeckel, guest artist Highlights From Bisbee The TSO’s annual concerts at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Bisbee were held on March 6. The two performances at 4:00 and 7:00 pm both sold out. They featured guest conductor James Feddeck conducting a program of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 4, Mendelssohn’s Hebrides Overture, Stravinsky’s Pulcinella Suite and Handel’s Swell the Full Chorus. The TSO was joined on the last piece by the Bisbee Community Chorus who presented the concert. This year, more than 100 students from Bisbee were among those attending the TSO’s performance. 6 2013/2014 Members of the Friends and Admirers of the Tucson Symphony Orchestra (FATSO) elect officers at a meeting in Green Valley.
