AGS BOARD MEETING HELD IN CONWAY
A meeting of the officers and directors of the Arkansas Genealogical Society
was held Saturday, October lOth, at the Torreyso~ Library at Arkansas state
Teachers College. Present at the meeting were Mrs. J. H. Atkinson, president;
Lee B. Spencer, vice-president; Mrs. Nora Taylor Clark, secretary-treasurer;
Mrs. Elaine Cia and W. E. Bailey, directors; and Mrs. Guy W. Murphy, editor.
A report was given on the number of new members obtained and a financial
statement was given by the secretary-treasurer.
Mr. Spencer, chairman of the
constitution committee, gave a preliminary report on the constitutional revisions being made by the committee.
The next meeting of the group will be held in January in Hot Springs, Ark.
AGS BIDINS LIBRARY COLLECTION
The Arkansas Genealogical Society is beginning a collection of books and
papers for a library to be housed at the Society's office in Conway.
A recent addition to the library waS the "Index to Tennessee Confederate
Pension Applications", published by the Tennessee State Library and Archives.
We hope to obtain additional publications as they become available.
We are especially interested in collecting family histories, and would like
to urge persons who have published family histories to donate copies of their
histories to the AGS library.
We wish to thank Mr. Robert L. layne of Trumann, Arkansas for forwarding to
the Society a book on the layne-lain-lane family genealogy, a gift of Mr. Floyd
Benjamin layne of Los Angeles, California, who compiled and published the book.
This book is a handsome, hard-bound publication, and is a valuable addition to
our library.

In 1635 there sailed from England to Virginia a young man listed as John
Perryn. He was 21 years old, and the son of a London resident of fair means.
~ve are not sure what the father'S
first name was, but the family name was
really Perrin; his wife was Susanna. Later John was joined .by his. brother,
Thomas Perrin, who brought with him a letter from Susanna, a "boy", some blankets and warm clothing and the information that the elder Perrin had d!ed and
left John a house in London.
Later in Varina Parish, Henrice County, Va., we find r'ecords of Thomas Perrin and his wife, Anne Forrest, living there in 1679.
After the death of
Thomas, Anne deeded land to their son, John Perrin, said land in Charles City
County, having been granted to Thomas in 1688.
Though it has not been proven
to our satisfaction that these were the descendants of the irr~igrants John and
Thomas Perrin, there is much evidence that they were the grandparents and father of Joseph Perrin who was living in Lunenburg County, Va, in 1748.
Later
the name of this oounty was changed to Charlotte, and we find Joseph Perrin
living on 1\dtty's Creek in Charlotte County at the time of his death in 1773.
Joseph Perrin and his wife, Rebecca, were the parents of fo"r sons ar,d four
daughters. Three of these sons married three sisters named Clopton, and ~~ess
marriages are noted by Lucy L"lne Erwin in her book "The Ancestors of om. Clopton of York County, Va.. ", and by John S. Wurts in his "Magna Chart.a".
Most genealogists are more interested in the Cloptons for their English
ancestrJ was amazing.
The Wurts outline stops with the three Clopton sisters
who married three Perrin brothers and if one wants to find out something about
those Perrin brothers one must consult court records and old Virginia periodicals.
Of the eight children of Joseph and Rebecca Perrin t~e have the f:·llowing
information:

Samuel Perrin, moved to Halifax Co., Va., where he married, Dac. 24, l7~
Jane Wade, a >ddow, and had two sons: Joseph Perrin, who married (1790)
Christine IBniel; and George Perrin, who married (1798) Sally Nash.

lVilliam Perrin, born c. 1730; died c. 1783; married Mary C1cpton (born
Nov. 3. 1737) and moved to Edgefield District (96). South Car"lina abcr.lt
1774. He is said to have fought in the Revolution, and he had two S(.'l1S
(some say four) who were Revolutionary soldiers.

Josephus Perrin, born 1740; died 1797; married Cassandra Clopton, 1764.
Moved to Lincoln Co., Ky., in 1784. Was a Revolut:i.cr.ary soldier.
4.
George Perrin, born c.1744; died 1797; married Catherine Clopton; moved
to South Carolina, Edgefiel.d District, in 1784.

One of the greatest authorities on the descendants of George (No.4) is Mr.
Paul Anderson, postmaster at Anniston, Ala.
Some residents of Texarkana may
be interested to know that the late Mr. Hugh Anderson of that city, whose wife
was a niece of Judge Will Kirby, was his brother.
The will of William Perrin was the first to be filed in the 96th District
of South Carolina.
We have an account of Mary, his wife, and their younger
children being forced to nee during the Revolution and take refuge at "star
Fort" (probably the old fort near there whose redoubt was shaped like a star)
when British soldiers invaded their home. Mr. ~mmons of near Edgefield, S.C.,
a descendant of William Perrin (No.2) still lives on a part of "Winterseat",
the land William acquired on Hard Labor Creek, and several years ago he gave
Mr. Anderson the original grant. Though Mr. Anderson is not a direct descendant of William (it is George who is his direct ancestor), no one seems to object because this did not go to one of William's descendants, for Mr. Anderson
has served all faithfully and well in the searching of records.
Perhaps it would be well to tell something of his place in the family tree
here, for many of the families in South Carolina connected with him are outstanding. He is descended from George Perrin and his wife Catherine Clopton,

through their son William.
S".1sannah Kellum, and by her had Margaret Caroline, b. 1809, who married Dr.
William Williamson of Alabama.
Mr. Anderson's S.A.R. records are through the
Wilsons of South Carolina and he is related to the Eddins' of Tuscaloosa, Ala.
He tells me that about three years ago he published a history of the Andersons
of South Carolina.
His wife, who died in February, 1963, was related to Mobly, Feaster, and

like me, is descended from the first William Perrin, but she is married to a
Feaster, and like Mrs. Anderson, was always invited to the Coleman-Feaster
reunion in South Carolina, much to the envy of some of us standing on the outside looking Ln. It seems that this has become a noted annual event to genealogists in southeastern United States.
But getting back to the descendants of the first William Perrin --and most
of the Arkansas and southeastern Oklahoma Perrins are--the children of William
Perr-ln (No.2) and his wife, Mary Clopton, were:

Moseley (born 1839, died 1914).
He was in Confederate Cavalry under

Telemachus Ulyses (Sock) Perrin, m. Harriet 'Powe and founded the Perrin
Stock Yards in New Orleans.

Na.poleon Patterson (Polie) Perrin (No.5) moved with his parents to Alabama
about 1848. The Moseleys lived just across the state line in Mississippi, and
it was there that he met and married Isabella (Belle) Moseley. They lived there
on the Ala.-Miss. line during the Civil War and for several years after.
In
the late 1870's they moved to southwest Arkansas. Their children were:
1.
William Moseley Perrin, b. March··6, 1861; d. Jan. 20, 1863.
2.
James Henry Perrin, b. Nov. 16, 1863; d. Nov. 1946;m. Lily Baker, 1876.
Eight children, of whom two died in infancy. The others:
a. Abner Raymond Perrin, b. Nov. 28, 1897; d. Nov. 26, 1958. Unmarried.
b. James Lanehart Perrin, b. Oct. 24, 1899. Unmarried; has been in'
U. S. Navy for many years.
c. Margaret Isabella (Margie) Perrin, m. 1st, Louis Harold Snow. Their
children: Louis Harold, Jr., Lillie Faye and Bobbie Jean.
This
marriage ended in divorce about 1932. She married 2nd, Fred Hartma~
d. Lillie Baker Perrin, m. 1st, Harry Newman Wheeler. Their children:
Mary Lois and Harry James. This marriage ended in divorce in 1941.
She m. 2nd, Philip Scott, and they have twin sons, Philip and Terry.
e. Mary Foster Perrin, m. Julius Jockusch, officer in the U. S. Navy;
no children. They live in San Francisco where her mother, the widow
of James H. Perrin, lives with them.
f. Robbie Lois Perrin, b. 1914; m. John Lawrence Tryon, Jr., Jan. 1931
Their only child, John Lawrence Tryon, 3rd., b. Feb. 6, 1935, was
killed in an automobile accident in 1958.

Sherrill Smith. soh of Eli Smith of Georgia and his wife

of North Carolina. He died in 1951. Three children:

who died about 1956. Four children:
a. SUe Belle, born c.1906, m. I. A. Vicknair and they live in Detroit,
Mich. One child, a daughter who is married and has several children.
b. Malcolm Patterson.
Was married, and has one son livin~, Charles;
they live in Los Angeles;
c. Roberta (Robbie), m. C.J. Young; lives in st. Louis, Mo.
d. Gerald. At last report he was living in Kansas City, Mo. Unm.

Thomas W. Perrin, b. Dec. 15, 1871; murdered about 1930; m. Clara Bennett of Arkansas. Both were lawyers living in Jena, La. Two children:
a. Bennett, unmarried.
b. Archie Belle, who married 1st, __ Tyson, and 2nd, __ Oates. She
had twin boys by Mr. Oates, and another son and a daughter. One of
the twins was killed wnen his plane crashed during World War II.
The other twin, Thomas Oates, lives in Houston, Tex., where he is a
customs officer at the National Airport. The other son, Randy Oates,
lives in Monroe, La. The daughter, Jeanine, lives in Alexandria, La.,
is married and has children. Archie uses the name of her first husband and lives near her daughter in Alexandria when not attending to
plantation interests. Her brother, Bennett, who is an invalid, lives
with her.
7.
Abner Perrin, b. Dec. 6, 1873, d. about 1958; m. 1st, Effie Henderson;
one child, Harold, who at last report was living at DeQueen, Ark. He m.
2nd, Georgia __ , who live'M At Texarkana; two children: Norman, who is
married, lives in Texarkana, and has children; Evelyn, who married a Mr.
Porter and who also lives in Texarkana.

Eliza Mitchell (Ellie) Perrin, b. Feb. 18, 1877; d. Nov. 20, 1947; m.
James Branch IsUell. (For a list of their descendants, as well as information on his ancestors, see "Southside Virginia Families" by Boddie.
A copy of this book is in the genealogy room of the Little Rock Public
Library.

Belle Perrin, b. about 1879 in Miss., d. about 1881 in Ark.
She is
buried beside her parents in Clear Creek cemetery near Horatio, Ark.

Mary Katherine Perrin, b. Mar. 14, 1882; d. Feb. 28, 1863; m. in 1904,
to John Lenthauld Eck, b. Apr. 16, 1878, d. Mar. 19, 1952. (For a list

stance, Eli Smith, who married Chrissie Perrin, helped to found the town of
Mt. Ida,' and his parents, Eli Smith and his wife, founded what was called
"Smi th House", one of the earliest inns of western Arkansas.
On the day that Ge~Abner Perrin was killed at Spottsylvania Court House
Gen. Lee mentioned only three men in his report at the ,end of the day: " •••
the brave General Perrin was killed •• -." N. P. Perrin had cousins in South
Carolina who were cousins of John C. Calhoun. A part of Richmond, Va. still
is called Clopton. The bullet which killed Capt. Jim Perrin at Chancello~s­
ville passed first under the arm of his brother, N. P. Perrin, who was later
to witness the mortal wounding of Jeb Stuart at Yellow Tavern.

I am a gr-granddaughter of Bayless Shumate and his second wife, Elizabeth
Cole.
I have done much research on this line, but there are still some questions about which I am most eager to learn the answers.
The origin of the name Shumate is in the family which immigrated from France
ca. 1720 (or earlier) and settled in Fauquier Co., Va.
The name at that time
>Tas spelled "de la Shumate" and is thought to have derived from the French name
"de la Ch8.umette". After the Revolution different descendants began to fan out
into S.C., N.C., >TOstern Va., Tenn;, and some to Ky. By this time the "de la"
had !:Jeen droppod and the name WaS shortened to Shumate and various corruptions
of same. The line which gOGS back froln Bayle 5S (son of William Shuma to and
Sn,rah &11) was from Harlan Co., Ky.; before that Claiborne Co., Tenn.; before
that Fauquier Co., Va. There is more about that family in my article of Jan.,
1961, in the FLASHBACK (Washinston Co., Ark. Hist. Soc.)
I cannot trace the lineage of the 'Shumakes' who intermarried ~Ii th Oxendine
in Vineyard Twp., Washington Co., but \~ould suspect perhaps there may be some
relationship to the Shumates who migrated to S.C.,
Mrs. (Alice Fletcher) Hicks "nd I have exchanged information to our mutual
benefit. The Hardin Shumate who married her I;y'dia Fletcher was a cousin of my
"Nilliam Shumate (father of the aforementioned Bayless).
Hardin was a son of
William and Clarissa Shumate, who were in Dade Co., Mo. in 1850 census;
most
of that family moved to Wash. Co., Ark. before 1860 (at which time the father
William was deceased.
As for the Shoemaker name, it is unfortunate that the Shumates have been
confused with that family.
Benjamin H. Shoemaker, III of Philadelphia did an
extensive survey in an effort to separate the two families.
I have a copy of
his "Shumate Notes" (Jan. 1959), in which he states:
"There were approsimately ninety different Shoemaker immi::;rants prior to
the Revolution, but apparently only one Shumate root.
Although in early days
t.he name "Shumate" was spelled many ways (Shoemake, Shoemate, Somachs, Sumach,

Edwrtrd, Hoses, Jesse, Bryan, and Sarah Hare, who came into N. C. in the early
1730's or perhaps earlier from Nansemond Co., Va.
Perhaps some of the family
remained. I believe Elizabeth Hare Maule of Nansemond Co. was a sister. I am
hoping the pUblication of the following history may bring further information
so that I can connect this and find the parents of the above mentioned.

Thomas Hare (my gr-gr-grandfather) was the third son of Edward Hare, Sr.. He
married Penelope Moore. Issue: Thomas Edt-mrd (my gr-grandfather) and the following daughters, Elizabeth (Lewis); Penelope (Speight); Jamima (i,ood); Janett.

In the early 1830's the five sons of Thomas Edward Hare moved to Fayette
Co., Tenn. (Macon). All of the brothers except my grandfather, Starkey Sharp
Hare, Sr. (who was deceased) moved to eastern Arkansas in the 1850's to Poinsett Co., later Cross Co.
My father, Judge Starkey Sharp Hare, Jr. was county judge in 1884.
He was
also representative for Cross Co. in 1891.
Old Mt. Zion, about It miles southeast of Vanndale, was the first place of
Methodist service in the then White River Conference. An old cemetery surrounds
the place where the frame church stood. At tha.t time there were four Methodist
ministers in the Hare family: Rev. John A. Hare, his brother Jacob Hare, and
two of Jacob Hare's sons, Thomas Pipkin Hare and David J. Hare.

still living at Evansville. I received a letter from Oscar last Jan. He probably could help more if he could be interviewed. He said Geo. W. was his grgrandfather. He also went to the grave yard and got his parents' death dates
and gave me the names of his brothers, but no addresses of them or children.
OBADIAH LA.RRl!MORE: Born 1800, Green Co., Ky.
Moved from Green Co. when eight
years old with his folks to Illinois. He grew up there and m. Emily Esteys in
Sangon Co., Ill. John, first child, was born Dec. 5, IB2B in Morgan Co., Mo.
Other children Elton L., Obadiah, Samuel, were born in Mo. The other children
were born in Crawford Co., Ark. as follows: Elizabeth (1835), Elijah, Rebecca,
Martha, and Wiley.
REV. W1. T. LARREMORE: Born 1802, Green Co., Ky. I find him next in Crawford
Co., Ark. on IB21 tax rolls, then again on the 1830 tax roll.
Shortly thereafter he moved to Fayetteville, Ark. He was a prosperous merchant; was a minister of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, and helped organize first church
in Cane Hill, Ark. He dealt in real estate considerably.
He moved to Texas
in 1849, and died in Caldwell Co., Sept. 27, IB53. He married about IB30, and
had the following children: David J., William, Martha, Mary Jane, Archibald,
James B., all born in Ark. His wife SUsan was born 1818 in Ky. and died 1869,
in Caldwell Co., Texas.

COLONEL LARREMORE: Born 1826, Crawford Co., Ark., married Rebecca Ann Delaney,
July 1, 1849, Washington Co., Ark. Moved from Ark. about 1859 to Johnson Co.,
Texas, where he was killed in a cotton gin accitend, 1879. He said his mother
came to Alvarado, Johnson Co., about 1855. I have not been able to locate her
by the name Larremore (it could be Ann Depriest, b. 1795, Ky.) Children were:

Fannie, John, and Texana.
SAMUEL LARREMORE: On the tax rolls in 1830, Crawford Co. Ark. ($50. dwelling,
five slaves over 10 years, three horses, ten head cattle, one slave 16/45.) He
was also found in the Federal census in Gallatin Co., Ky. in 1818.
ANN LARREMORE: On the tax rolls in 1831 with the same assessment as the year
before to Samuel.
In 1833 the same property was made an estate to a Samuel
Larremore, probably the youngest son, for in 1832, he was on the tax rollmrl
charged 25¢ poll tax on one horse.
Rev. James and Rev. William T. were on the Crawford Co. tax rolls in 1830.
A Lewis Larremore was in the 1818 Census of st. Clair Co., Ill. Lewis is probably the father of Obadiah who came to Crawford Co., Ark. about 1835.
I will appreciate any help on the Larremores from any of the descendants or
others concerned. All letters will be answered.

make the following correction:
Re Green Gipson (Gibson) who made the land entry in Madison Co., Ark. 1839.
Goodspeed's old history is confusing on this, but Green Gibson, b. Jan., 1810,
N. C., m. Rhoda Hawk. John Austin was the son-in-law of John Holmesley, and
statements about a son-in-law settling on Greem Gibsosn's farm confused me.
The children of Green Gibson and Rhoda Hawk were: Mary, m. R. Thompson; Nancy,
m. H. H. Fox; Missaniere, m. B. B. Davis; John Gibson; Druscilla, m. E. Dodsen;
Pleasant M. Gibson; Telitha, m. Capt. W. R. Lawson; LYdia, m. Thomas Long;
Green B. Gibson, m. Mary Moore; Hosea Gibson; and Ezekiel Gibson.
I would like to know more about the John Gibson who m. Martha Harper. Their
daughter Sarah J .• m. (1851) a Norman and lived in Benton Co., Ark. Would like

Rhody Ann Elizabeth Sheid (1846-1893). They were married at laCrosse, Ark. in

with the exception of Haden and possibly Anny. According to an old Bible record'he died in 1852. I would like to know the name of his wife and her parentage and where they are buried. Also, I need the maiden name of Haden's mether

Whitely in Tenn.; moved to Carroll Co., Ark., about 1836. In 1840 the Carroll
Co. census shows James, Thomas and William Clark living near the above Whiteley
family. In 1861 the Whiteleys moved to Bell Co., Texas. Sarah Clark Whiteley
died there July 30, 1890. In the 1880 census she gives Va. as place of . birth
for her mother and N. C. as place of bir·th for her father. There is a Henderson connection somewhere in this Clark family.

Two of my brothers and one sister were taken by Juvenile Court from DeWitt
to Pine Bluff, Ark. in 1913, and two of them, a brother Robert E. Lee Mediate,
and my sister, Annie Valara Mediate, were adpoted by people named Culpepper at
Pine Bluff, Ark. The other brother, Lee Roy Mediate, was placed in a Catholic
Orpha~~ge at Little Rock, Ark.
I found him after ten years of searching but I
have lost him again. The last I heard from him, he lived in st. Louis, Mo. I
hope you can run my query and hope I can find some trace of my people.

in Huntsville I found a deed of the sale of the land owned by Joseph Dennis in

I have become interested in tracing my lineage back to the Lee's who probably came from England to Virginia and then migrated to No. Carolina. We have
a record back to my gr-gr-grandfather, Jesse Briton Lee, who was born in No.
Carolina in 1805 or 1806.
He was disowned because he married his father's
house servant, Fereby Bundy. We do not know his father's name; because of the
names Jesse, Joel, and SUsanna in the family, we believe he was a direct descendant of Jesse Lee of No. Carolina (1740-1831) who m. Susannah Johnson, 1770.
Susannah Johnson Lee died in 18/fO.
Mr gr-grandfather, Josias Lee, was born in 1826 in No. Carolina. The next
record we have of Jesse Briton's children is a daughter, SUsanna, born in Ala.
in 1834 or 1835.

One Jesse Lee of No. Carolina was the son of Joel Lee who

I am seeking information on the .family of Jacob B. Denny (b. Ky.) and his
wife Sarah (b. Tenn.) who came from Ill. to Crawford Co., Ark. ·ca. 1846. They
had eight children, six born in Ill., two born in Ark. The children were: Harden W. Denny; William J. Denny, b. 1833; John Denny, b. 1836; Martha Denny,

Harden W. Denny went to Texas, had two children born in Texas, Nathen A.,

In the 1870 census his
wife was listed as M. E. Denny, age 33, and Harden W. was listed as 44. I can
find no trace of Harden W. Denny after then. The boys Nathen and Ruben died in
Oklahoma. Any help anyone can give me on this family will be appreciated.

Leroy Jeffers, b. 1812, Tenn. (where?), m. Elizabeth Hale, b. 1820, Tenn.

The 1850 census of Franklin Co. says he
was born in Tenn. and also shows Tenn. as birthplace of all the children, but
the 1860 census of Franklin Co. states they were born in Arkansas. Daniel was
either married and out on his own by 1860 or else he was deceased. Leroy and
Elizabeth Jeffers had the following children as listed in the 1860 census: Daniel, Jesse, Nancy, Betty, Leroy, James 0., William and Robert. Other children
were born after 1860, making a total of thirteen children.
Elizabeth Hales or Hale is said to be the dau. of James Hale and his father
supposedly George Hale. Anyone having information on these families, please
write me. I will be glad to exchange information or will pay for rosiiive proof
of the parentage of Leroy Jeffers and Elizabeth Hale.
