Core Skills Day 2016 - Fairfield High School
Core Skills Day 2016 This is the Core Skills 2016 newsletter! Today we have found out all about the different events taking place today. We have been doing interviews, taking photos, finding out what each activity is doing and then writing articles about it. By Hayaad Abdirahman and Humaira Arshad . This newsletter and the Fairfield Core Skills 2016 section of the site was edited by Benjamin Youngman-Lacey, Marika Szutowska, Maisie Woods and Amy Sleath. We were also assisted by many other people who did an amazing jobs with photography and writing articles throughout the day. By Amy Sleath Performer Carnival head dresses and make-up: The Performance Industry has been working on carnival dance today. They have also made carnival headdresses, painted their own samba drums and decorated their faces accordingly. At the end of the day, a performance will take place in the atrium, displaying what they have learnt and created. To make the headdresses they got given a plain template and lots of decorative material. Glitter, sequins and paint were distributed for this task. For face paint they got the option of having their face decorated with a carnival theme by either the DT teacher or their fellow pupils. They also had the opportunity to paint and decorate their own samba drums ready for the performance at the end of the day. By Flo Farrington-San and Mimi Bartlett McLuckie 7N Slam Poem: I interviewed the performers. They’re writing poems about carnivals in a performance workshop. They’re writing about dancing and music. They also watched a film about two kids who went to a festival to meet a poet on his top tips on how to write a poem. Here is one of the poems that was written: Teenagers in 2016 Being are is tough, The streets are rough And adults are always in a huff. People think we are all the same Although some of us are not to Blame for the anger, violence and fights Don’t get me wrong, It’s not all bad. We have the right to free education To be successful is our final destination We express our self through Music and fashion And this pressure to be cool won’t last forever We will get through this if we stick together. By: Daisy Dignan 7Q Soldier Medics: The soldiers enjoyed the taking part in obstacle course and playing in the mud but that’s not all they all they did. Medics are essential to a solider so they were also learning what it’s like to be a medic. A member of the army came in to tell them about different scenarios that could happen while at war or even at base. By Deborah Omolegan-Obe In this session the solider group learnt some procedures including, CPR, how to treat a burn and how to help an unconscious civilian. A demonstration took place in the community room to simulate an event. After this simulation took place the students were given the chance to try it out for themselves. After and demonstration and practise on CPR the soldier’s learnt about burns and what to do in the case of a burn. In this they learnt that a burn can be caused by many different events. They also were taught that if a burn by any chance was to effect the face or throat than an ambulance should be called straight away. About unconsciousness, the students were told about some reasons why someone may go unconscious such as being dehydrated low blood sugar levels or being too hot By Liam Keeler Scrap Heap Challenge interview with Zerya, Soldier Q. What are you doing here today? A. We are trying to make some equipment that we have lost. So we are making some body armour, a utility belt and a helmet. Q. Are you enjoying it? A. Yes it’s very interactive. Q. What other activities have you done today so far? A. Obstacle course, camouflage and medic Q. Do you think this day has gone well? A. I think it has, it is very interesting and unique. By Alex Brownbridge and Arran Andrews Archaeologist Survey Equipment with Mr Gould Q. Are you enjoying what you are doing and what you have done? A. Yes, I have it has been very interesting. B. Q. What are the students doing here today? A. We have three activities going on. One, which we are stood next to here, is a ground penetration radar. Archaeologists use it to see if there is anything beneath the ground. And the next activity is a shipwreck. With the staff and university who are showing the students how archaeologists would find the sites. The techniques to get down to the places that are inaccessible. The third activity is showing students how to analyse bits of human remains and pottery. Q. What’s been your highlight so far? A. It’s difficult but I would say getting the ground radar working was great because we could see what’s 10 meters is down and so on. By Arran Andrews, Alex Brownbridge Pottery Workshop In the pottery session for archaeology they were making magnetometers, which are used to find metal objects below the surface of the ground. To create the magnetometers they had to rub two nails together fifty times and then get tape, string and a straw, which they would then use to finish creating their magnetometer. They would do this by placing their nails in the middle of a small strip of tape, very close together but not quite touching, and then fold the tape over on its self so that the sides stick together. We asked two of the students taking part in the activity what they thought about it this is what they said: ‘I enjoyed making the magnetometer’. They also said ‘It’s quite interesting and new to me and it’s good that you can make it at home with every day things you will have in your house’. Their overall thoughts on making the magnetometers was that it was fun, interesting and useful to know By Gabriella Tickner Olympian Olympian Smoothies For the Olympian Activity, they have been making healthy smoothies using various different fruits such as pineapples, bananas, grapes, apricots, berries and melons. The Olympians were making the smoothies with 500ml of grapefruit, apple or orange juice. They had to cut the pieces of fruit quite small so that they could be blended. When it was made, it tasted ‘bitter ‘and ‘nasty. ‘The Olympians needed to add more melon as they had put too much grapefruit in it. The point of the smoothie was that they needed it for energy. The sugar in the fruit makes people more energetic. It is also very healthy and nutritious. By Humaira Arshad Table tennis and physical fitness have been taking place around the school. Everyone has had an enjoyable experience with these different tasks. Olympians have been competing well as they've had the energy from their smoothies and pancakes. Engineers Problem Solving Today we looked at an industry called engineering. They had to decode dingbats and find a combination of a lock. The purpose of this is to learn how to problem solve. “Try escape the room” Irij Aziz The engineers took part in many activities and experienced what it’s like to be a real engineer which may come in handy later on in life. The puzzles and things they were asked to solve showed them that maths is very important thing in engineering. In another workshop the students were asked to build a tower that could hold a ball on top but they had to use the least amount of equipment and make their tower the tallest. The skills they needed to complete this task were essential skills for engineers By Maisha Fawziyah Engineering core skills rocket science Mr Mears had organised a lesson on rocket science. In this lesson the students created bottle rockets and filled them with water. They then took them outside the classroom and fired them by pumping air into the left over space. Some bottles went a good 4 meters whereas others failed to go 4 feet. After the bottle firing extravaganza Mr Hickey took the class to his classroom for butane rockets. The rockets were filled half way with water and turned upside down in a box ¼ filled with more water while oxygen was pumped into the box causing the 2/3s of the water to escape and then he filled the rest of the bottle with oxygen. He set of 4 and in the firing shattered the inside of a light bulb. By Grace Bridges and Liam Keeler Quote: Today, in engineering, a group of people were making objects out of unrecyclable objects. They were basically upcycling furniture. For example, they made a mini table out of a chair. “It is really creative. There is no particular rules to what you have to do.” Cameron Shimell “Engineers have to use their knowledge, understanding & creativity to create new objects e.g. buildings, furniture and vehicles. Today students are upcycling furniture and being creative with scrap materials.” Dr Ross Journalist All through Core Dkills the school’s budding young journalists have been working tirelessly to complete a newsletter, update the website and post things on Twitter and Instagram. With the library as their headquarters they have been running around the school getting information. So from all of us here at Journalism Headquarters we hope you enjoy our newsletter!
