GREEN’S CORNER
by Jeff Mack
The Dye greens are healing well from their recent aerification. Every effort will be made on our end to minimize the amount of time required for the surfaces
to roll smoothly again. As always, we sincerely thank the membership for their patience and understanding.
Speaking of aerification, let’s hit the fast forward button and move to August 2014 for a moment. The Champion on the Nicklaus greens does require (1) to (2)
aerifications per year so that it may continue to perform to the expectation level of this department and the CCL membership. While the Bent on the Dye is aerified
during cooler times of the year, the Champion is aerified during the heat of the summer while it is actively growing. We will close the Nicklaus courses for 1 week
in early August. During this span of time, we will collectively aerify the greens, tees, fairways, and approaches. Going this route, disruption to the Nicklaus courses
for this process will take place all at once and be done with, rather than it being peppered in little bits and pieces throughout the summer.
This time of year, the Bermuda on the CCL driving range tees is very inactive, and the newly seeded Rye is still immature, and working on getting established.
Bottom line, heal time from divots is going to be slow November thru February. We would like to respectfully remind the membership to create a linear style
divot pattern while practicing and/or warming up. Taking divots in this fashion will disturb the least amount of area, will provide the turf the shortest distance to
recover, and will certainly aid us in keeping the practice facilities in tip-top shape.
Weather permitting; the first application of paint to all non-overseeded fairways, tees, and approaches is scheduled for later this month. We are very
excited to be introducing this relatively new process to CCL! Through research, it is highly advantageous to paint the turf while it still has its natural green tint, rather than waiting until it goes completely dormant and fades to a straw brown color. If all goes according to plan, these areas will be painted a total of (3) times this winter so that their color remains appealing and consistent. The second application would occur sometime in January 2014, the final application would take place sometime in March 2014. As a reminder, the Nicklaus greens will be painted as well. A
different paint with a darker, green hue will be utilized strictly on the Nicklaus greens so that they are easily distinguished from the rest of the course.
Just as the previous few years, beginning in early November, we will utilize turning boards each and every time we mow greens until sometime next spring. The
use of these polymer boards continually proves to be extremely effective in protecting CCL’s Bermuda collars from mechanical injury due to the constant turning
of the mowers.
Now that the 2014 CCL tournament season is nearing its conclusion, we are quickly going to pick back up where we left off with refurbishing the ballwasher
stations. Stations that were shipped-out earlier this year look practically brand new. As a reminder, the stations are removed from the courses for a few weeks on
a piecemeal basis to enable this process to take place. At this point in the game, approximately 30% of the stations have been refurbished. Our goal is to have this
project completed by the spring / early summer of 2014.
Including the (2) practice green bunkers, there are a grand total of 80 greenside bunkers, which total almost 4 acres of area, on the CCL courses.
We are making steady progress in regards to adding 2” to 3” of G-Angle sand to them. The pace of progress will really accelerate this winter when we are able to devote more time to this endeavor. As a reminder, the G-Angle is produced by running very coarse sand through a machine called a “rock crusher”. The end result is a sand particle that has plenty of angularity. Plenty of angularity means that there are numerous
sites for the individual sand particles to lock together. As a result, this sand packs very well, but at the same time is relatively coarse, and allows water to
infiltrate through quickly. Results have been very favorable at other clubs that had previously employed this method.
We are trying a relatively new pre-emergent herbicide, called “Specticle”, on #3 Ocean, #5 Ocean, and #6 Ocean. On these (3) holes, the material was applied
to the tees, fairways, approaches, and rough. The putting surfaces and collars on these 3 holes were not treated. The rest of the course was treated with a material
called “Barricade”, which we have used the previous 7 years to deter winter weeds, such as but not limited to Poa Annua, from germinating. Specticle has been
receiving very good reviews in its ability to keep turf stands “clean” of unwanted weeds. It will be exciting to see if we note a difference in the amount of winter
weeds present on #’s 3, 5, and 6 Ocean as compared to the other golf holes on the CCL courses. We should be able to make a good assessment of its effectiveness
by March of next year. If favorable results are observed, we will likely begin using this product on a wider scale as soon as the fall of 2014. As always, if you should
have any questions, please feel free to stop me on the course, or make an appointment to see me in my office.
TIP OF THE MONTH by Greg Guman
The High Floater
Picture your ball to the right of the green with a front pin on #1 of the Ocean. You have to float the ball over the
bunker, land it soft, with no green to work with. (WOW!!!).
Piece of cake, here’s how you do it: Use a 60 degree wedge, play the ball just a touch forward of center, lean into
your target side leg and press the butt of the club forward leaning the shaft into the ball. Using your wrist take the club
outside the target line hinging it up quickly and then come down steeply, sliding the leading edge of the club under
the ball folding the finish and holding the face square facing the sky.
1. Setup • 2. Out • 3. Up • 4. Slide • 5. Fold and Hold Finish • 6. Go for the gusto!
It takes plenty of acceleration. Good luck and have fun!
Coming soon!! Live video instruction with Greg Guman on the Golf Instruction page of the CCL Website.

LGA NEWS & EVENTS
Beginner Ladies Clinic
Tuesday from 11 a.m. - 12 p.m.
November 5, 12, 19, 26
The month of November has arrived and that means the start of the holiday season. It also means the
end of the LGA season, but what a season it has been! We survived the closing of the Nicklaus course for 10
weeks during the height of our playing season, we welcomed several new members, we hosted several fun
tournaments and many more fun play days, and - drum roll please - we brought home the Interclub Trophy
for the first time ever!!! We can look forward to the 2014 season with a strong membership roster and a
healthy bank account. Please take time over the next few weeks to thank Trey Howell, our Pro Staff Advisor,
and all the members of the 2013 LGA Board of Directors (both elected and appointed) for putting their time
and talents to work this past season. Our 2013 Theme was “A little help from my friends” and we got a lot
more than a little!
If you are new to Landfall, enjoy golf, and would like to get to know a group of nice ladies, please join us
next season. If you’re not new and have been reluctant to join, come try us out. You’ll be glad you did!
Before we completely close the door on our 2013 season there is one more important piece of business
- our Closing Meeting.on Thursday, November 14. We will begin with a 9-hole Pinehurst Scotch format beginning at 9:00 a.m. (please note this is a pick-your-own partner event) with lunch and the meeting to follow.
Please sign up for golf and lunch separately. At the closing meeting we will recognize and reward several
accomplishments - holes-in one, most birdies, ringers champion, most improved player, and more. We will
also present the following slate of officers for the 2014 season - Sharon Cram, President; Sandy Randazzo,
Vice President; Vivian Goetsch, Treasurer; Randa Ellis, Secretary; Anky Koudijs, Tournament Chairperson;
Beverly Price, Play Day Chairperson; Sue Sabanos, Membership Chairperson and Julie Colclaser, Rules and

L9GA NEWS & EVENTS
Well, hard as it is to believe, November is finally upon us. As we draw to the end of the 2013 L9GA let us
not forget all the fun that has made this year so very special! Starting off in February with the Opening Coffee,
The L9 Cocktail Party, being hosted and then hosting the Porters Neck L9GA, Couples Twilight and of course
the Pink Ribbon day just last month. This year has been packed with great opportunities to meet and play
golf with new & old friends alike. We only have one play date in November to gather together as the 2013
L9GA. That would be Thursday, November 7th at 9:00am. We will be playing at the Nicklaus with the game
of Captains Choice. Following play we will enjoy our End of the Year Luncheon, also at the Nicklaus. Please
be sure to sign up early and to register for lunch as this is such a wonderful way to end the season. We will
close out 2013 with the L9GA Holiday Party on Wednesday, December 4, starting at 6:30 pm at the Landfall
Clubhouse. We are all looking forward to sharing some holiday cheer as we kick off the Holiday Season.
Please be sure to register and mark your calendar now for the last Party of the L9GA for 2013!
On a personal note, we would like to send out a special “Thank you” to all the 2013 L9GA Officers and the
Committees Chairs for this year. The board has worked diligently so that all members and guest could enjoy
this season. Without our devoted President, Martha Bachman and her great team, this year would not have
been the success it has been. So many faces & skills behind the scenes that really worked above and beyond
the call of duty! Thank you to each and everyone!

MGA NEWS & EVENTS
The 2013 MGA season has been one of the most successful seasons for our association. With only one
rainout, everyone has had ample opportunity to play and meet many new golfers and begin new friendships.
That is a big part of our mission so we are pleased for this chance to enrich the Country Club of Landfall
community.
As we put the wraps on our 21st year we again will celebrate with a closing dinner on November 13. At the
traditional steak dinner, the awards for the Ironman Trophy, the MGA Cup, and the Tour Series will be presented. At this time Chuck Owens is in the lead for the Ironman Trophy for attending all 28 events. Lou Rose
is leading the race for the MGA Cup with 52 points followed by Rob Ill and Steve Phillips with 42 points, John
Rendina at 41 points and Ron Minson with 40 points. With a possible 15 points up for grab in the first two
weeks of November the race is not over.
Other action that will take place at the closing dinner will be to introduce Gunter Rohland as a new Board
member filling an unexpired two year term Also, we will present for election to the board Lou Rose, Brud
Deas, and Dick Brightman . They will be joining the Board for three year terms.
We look forward to seeing all MGA members at the closing dinner.

Great Oaks / Landfall Fall Festival Reminder
Wendy Sedlacek
Many thanks to our October speaker, Kelly Tinsley of UBS Financial Services. In November we look forward to Jane Marquard of Paysage Home
and newly opened Paysage Interiors joining us. Jane will be showing us decorations for Thanksgiving that can transition to Christmas.
Each meeting we support our Wilmington neighbors in need with the donation of non-perishable food items. Mother Hubbard’s Cupboard
provides emergency food to families while The Good Shepherd Center prepares meals for the hungry in our community. Bulk quantities as well
as household size goods benefit both of these service agencies. Forgot to bring your food items? Then make a cash donation in the box near the
Little Red Wagon to further support both. Please be generous!
Plan to join us on the second Wednesday of each month, September to June for an enriching program and brief meeting. Membership is $25.
More information is available at www.greatoaksclub.com. We would love to have you join us!
