REHSS – USF Research Experience for High School Students Three MHS Engineering students were chosen for Research Internships at USF’s College of Engineering, 2011-2012. Michael Goodman (2012 Salutatorian) is attending U. of Florida and is double majoring in Mathematics and Statistics. Michael Goodman Jasmine Santiago Marco Schoener Kathy Freriks Jasmine Santiago (2012 Valedictorian) is attending Columbia U. in New York on a full ride ($61,000/year); she is majoring in Mechanical Engineering. Marco Schoener is attending Embry Riddle Aeronautical U. in Daytona; he is majoring in Mechanical Engineering w/a concentration in Robotics Systems. Kathy Freriks is Lead Teacher for Magnet Programs at Middleton. Mathematics MHS Mu Alpha Theta Math Team ranked #7 in the Nation – 2008! 14 FBLA members travel to Nashville, TN, June 2014, to compete at the Nat’l FBLA Leadership Conference – because they all won at the FL State FBLA Conference!!! On October 3, 2014 (National Manufacturing Day), the SME Education Foundation announced that Middleton High School in Tampa, FL was selected as one of six new high schools in the nation to become a PRIME school! PRIME creates connections between high school students, educators and the manufacturing industry to grow and train the next-generation workforce — all while driving interest and awareness in manufacturing. The new 2015-2016 National PRIME schools are: Capital High School, Helena, Montana Jeffersontown High School, Louisville, Ky Middleton High School, Tampa, Florida Tri Rivers Career Center, Marion, Ohio John Glenn High School, Norwalk, California Rocklin High School, Rocklin, California PRIME schools are selected for their ability to be leading educational institutions in the areas of advanced manufacturing and STEM education. To maintain their designation as PRIME, schools must deliver on the mission of creating the next-generation workforce, as well as having engaged instructors, an active advisory panel and strong industry connections. Schools benefit from PRIME via funding for equipment, software and professional development, as well as manufacturing/STEM-focused camps, extracurricular activities and scholarship opportunities.
