Employees and their families from Simmons-Rockwell volunteered their time and cars to deliver meals in the Elmira and Corning areas. To kick up the intensity of the campaign and involve more of the local community ...this year we Shared Some More Love……by filling a Subaru trunk with small personal items that were then put into Christmas stockings (special thanks to the Horseheads Thrasher Swim Team and Girl Scouts of America sorting and stuffing the stockings). The filled stockings were delivered with the meals on December 23……….A very Merry Christmas was had by all!! Employees from Simmons-Rockwell Love Letters Young people participated in the “Love Letters Campaign” and our clients benefitted! Students were asked to sign up at www.dosomething.org and create a Valentine’s Day card. Meals On Wheels volunteers delivered the cards with meals on Valentine’s Day. The campaign is built on the premise that “Depression and isolation affects more than 6.5 million Americans ages 65 and older. Brighten their day by sending them a Valentine’s Day card “ Valentine’s Day cards were received from all over the country to be delivered in Chemung County. Friday June 6, 2014 5pm—7pm at Grove Park! BIRTHDAY GENEROSITY Last November 6th, Samia Israel turned 11 years old. She didn’t ask for an ipod or a new bike or a big party. Samia told her mom that she didn’t want any presents or money but instead she wanted friends and family to donate canned food to Meals on Wheels. Norma, Samia’s mom, helped Samia post this request on Facebook and the response was overwhelming! A few days after Samia’s birthday, she and Norma brought several bags of canned goods into Meals on Wheels. What an unselfish act on the part of this 11 year old girl! Meals on Wheels will never forget the generosity of Samia Israel. Meals On Wheels Fundraiser Show Saturday April 5, 2014 Here We Grow Again—Part Deux "A journey of 1,000 miles must begin with a single step." The Board of Directors has formed the BET (Building Expansion Team) to look at all options to insure the continuation and growth of Meals On Wheels, a vital community organization. Well, bigger is always better, and the BET has successfully secured a bigger building that will accommodate the growth of the organization, along with much needed room for efficient and effective meal preparation, office space, board room space, and more. BET Chair, Corey Ashcroft is quoted as saying “This is just the beginning of what is going to be a long and challenging process for making Meals on Wheels a self-sustaining organization.” This Board and staff are up to AND welcome this challenge and are committed to make this project a success. Stay tuned, as plans take shape to include our community resources - we will communicate details, what form of assistance is needed, and contact information on how to be involved. Page 4 Thank you Friends 08/01/2013—02/10/2014 We are deeply grateful to our donors, without whom we would not have sufficient resources to continue this program. Many of our clients cannot afford the basic cost of a hot meal, $4.75, but they pay what they can. Government funding does not cover the cost of serving those who cannot afford meals. Nearly 2/3 of those we serve are on special diets – diabetic, low-fat, low-sodium, soft, pureed, and other diets related to serious health problems. Over 200 volunteers willingly give of their time and vehicles to prepare, package and deliver the meals. Please continue to help us serve those in greatest need. As with anything, we try to be absolutely perfect, but sometimes make mistakes. Please accept our apologies in advance if there are errors in this wonderful donor list and let us know of any corrections needed.
