March/April 2013 ITALIAN WINES 90 PLUS 2010 Lucente $23.99 “Over the past few months many 2010 Tuscan wines have been released and they have been some of the finest examples we have ever seen from their producers. The 2010 vintage is among one of the best I have seen in my 15 years of buying Italian wines. Here are some value driven highlights of this extraordinary vintage that are sure to over deliver. James Suckling 93 Points Fascinating aromas of ripe berries and hints of coconut and vanilla bean follow through to a full body, with super silky tannins and a long and intense finish. Lots going on here. Excellent value...so excellent now. 2010 Badiola Mazzei $14.99 2010 Duemani CiFRA $25.99 Wine Spectator 92 Points “Black cherry and currant flavors are accented by violet notes in this structured, muscular red. This shows density and grip, as the spice- and mineral-accented finish lingers. best from 2014 through 2020 Release $33; Wine House $25.99 Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate 93 Points The 2010 CiFRA bursts from the glass with juicy red cherries, flowers, mint, spices and licorice. There is a purity and naked expression of the fruit that is great. Sweet floral notes are woven throughout, giving the CiFRA a raciness that is incredibly appealing. The CiFRA was vinified and aged in cement. This is a great showing from Duemani. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2018. Antonio Galloni 2010 Villa Pillo Syrah $15.99 Wine Spectator 92 Points A brooding, inky red, sporting plum, blueberry and roasted meat aromas and flavors. This is concentrated, coating the dense tannins easily and achieving a sense of equilibrium. Fine length. Best from 2014 through 2024. 500 cases made. –BS Sassicaia’s 2nd Label 2010 Tenuta San Guido Guidalberto $36.99 2010 Argiano Non Confunditur $17.99 Release Price $55; Wine House $36.99 2 or More $31.99 James Suckling 92 Points Intense aromas of dried cherries and plums with hints of rose stem. Full body, with fine tannins and a crisp and delicious finish. Very yummy. Drink now or hold. JS James Suckling 93 Points James Suckling writes: “This is really beautiful and balanced with refined tannins and a focused, beautiful ripe cherry and raspberry fruit. Long and super silky. Better in 2014 but so delicious now. Best NG ever from Argiano.” 2010 Sette Ponti Oreno $64.99 2010 Brancaia Tre Rosso Toscana $17.99 “A pleasing wine with juicy berry and plum character with hints of peaches and chocolate. Medium to light body, with fine tannins and a fresh finish. Savory. A blend as always of Sangiovese, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Drink now.” 90 Points James Suckling 2010 Tenuta dell’Ornellaia Le Volte $21.99 Wine Advocate 90 Points The 2010 Le Volte dell’Ornellaia is big, juicy and expressive in this vintage. There is firmness of tannin that is unusual for this wine but that works beautifully here in preserving freshness and structure. Dark red cherries, flowers, mint and licorice are some of the many notes that emerge from this beautifully balanced Le Volte. In 2010 the blend is 50% Merlot, 30% Sangiovese and the rest Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. As always, Le Volte is made from a blend of estategrown grapes and purchased wine. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2017. E-mail: wine@winehouse.com 2 Release Price $109.99, Wine House Price $64.99. James Suckling 96 Points, Wine Spectator 94 Points The soils that produce the fruit for Oreno are a blend of clay, sand and the stony galestro limestone that is special to Tuscany. Clusters are reduced to one or two per stalk in May to assure maximum quality when they are hand harvested in autumn. In the winery, grapes are hand sorted and destemmed. Fermentation occurs in a combination of temperature-controlled and lined, open-top tanks, followed by malolactic fermentation. Oreno is aged in French Allier barriques and in bottle before release. “A full, rich red, with pure cherry, floral, licorice and spice aromas and flavors. Balanced and graceful, with a lingering aftertaste of sweet fruit and spice. Should get even better with a few years of aging. Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot...” (Wine Spectator) “Love the aromas to this red with currants, blackberries and hints of dark truffles. Fullbodied, with beautifully crafted tannins that are creamy and seamless. Fabulous refinement and length. Leave it in your cellar for at least four or five years. But impressive to taste or drink now. A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Petit Verdot. One of best Orenos ever made since its inception in 1999.” (James Suckling) How to Reach The Wine House WINE HOUSE SHIPPING POLICY All customers must abide by certain stipulations as they relate to the shipping of goods by The Wine House. 310/479-3731 2311 Cotner Avenue • LA, CA 90064-1877 1. The bouquet is filled with flint, peach and gravelly, stony aromas. Cuvée Saint Martin is a blend of the best plots of Domaine Laroche in the Chablis appellation. All plots are located on Kimmeridgian soil with a west to northwest orientation. Thanks to the diverse nuances of these sources, they bring richness and complexity to the final cuvée. Intense with hints of ripe white fruit and spring blossoms. Ripe fruit balanced by zesty acidity; lingering fruity finish.- Importer’s Notes 2010 Romain Collet Chablis “Valmur” Grand Cru $45.99 Pour a glass of this and you will know instantly that you are experiencing Grand Cru magic: pulsing color, the fruit fills the glass and your senses. Mouth filling, rich and fragrant. White fruits and minerally texture on the palate. Very elegant, yet possessing power and strength. Quite remarkable. 2008 Domaine Henri Prudhon St. Aubin Blanc “Les Castets” 1er Cru $31.99 2010 Romain Collet Chablis “Les Clos” Grand Cru $45.99 “This offers a slight step up in aromatic elegance and depth with a very fresh lemon and dried rose petal nose that is trimmed in anise hints that are also picked up by the attractively textured and nicely concentrated middle weight flavors that evidence a light minerality on the precise and energetic finish. Fine quality from young vine fruit.” Burghound (BH) We are honored to have been offered this first-time effort by Romain with “Les Clos” vineyard. The first of many more to come. The world-class quality of this vineyard in undeniable. Romain made one cuvee from 40year-old vines. Its presence in the glass shows its breed. Fresh, open fruit with a kiss of citrus and beguiling stoniness leading to floral whispers. On the palate, well, this is where the magic of “Les Clos” really shines through. Length, balance, nerve and acidity. A very memorable wine. 2008 Domaine Henri Prudhon St. Aubin Blanc “Sur le Sentier du Clou” 1er Cru $31.99 “A pretty and highly expressive is dominated by airy floral aromas with undertones of grapefruit and lime that introduces rich, fresh and vibrant medium-bodied flavors that are dry, cool and linear on the balanced, understated and lingering finish. Lovely juice and worth considering.” BH 90 Points Outstanding 2008 Domaine Henri Prudhon Chassagne Montrachet “Les Chenevottes” 1er Cru $46.99 2010 Romain Collet Chablis “Mont de Milieu” 1er Cru $39.99 “A more reserved nose of orchard fruit, resin and citrus aromas that fade seamlessly into intense, fleshy and generous middle weight flavors that possess ample dry extract, punch, drive and very solid if not sensational complexity. In particular I like the agreeably dry and detailed finish that is clean without being commercial.” BH 91 Points Outstanding Completely vinified in demi-muids 15 years in age. No “oak” hear folks. Just vigorous, full flavored fruit, silex, and chalk with abundant fresh acidity. And that magic of Mont de Mileu vineyard. A bizou of white flowers in the aromas and on the palate. This is a keeper. Bravo! Approaching Grand Cru? Yeah, I would say so. It’s flanked by Montee de Tonnerre along “Grand Cru Row”. 2010 Domaine Henri Prudhon & Fils PulignyMontrachet “Les Enseignères” Villages $52.99 “An exuberant nose of fresh white flower and lightly spiced pear aromas precede sappy, delicious, palate staining and persistent middle weight flavors that possess a seductive mouth feel due to the ample dry extract. This graceful effort offers outstanding quality for a villages level vineyard and is recommended.” BH 90 Points Outstanding 2010 Romain Collet Chablis “Montee de Tonnerre” 1er Cru $39.99 One cuvee from one parcel with vines of 25 and 45 years. Amazingly, this vineyard looks right at Grand Cru “Les Clos” and is yet a 1er Cru. This is your good fortune because of the price. Zero oak. Lovely bright gold color with floral and mineral scents that fills the room, not just the glass. A vigorous stoniness on the palate layered with fresh white peach and citrus. 2010 Domaine Robert Chevillon Nuits Saint Georges Vieilles Vignes Villages $59.99 2010 Romain Collet Chablis “Vaillons” 1er Cru $39.99 Three parcels used for this cuvee: two are blocks of 38-year-old vines making up 20% of the blend, the balance from vines that are 52 years old. Remarkable. The fruit of one block fermented in round steel, another in foudre and the last in 900-liter oval barrel. Wow! E-mail: wine@winehouse.com 4 “Very mild reduction diminishes only slightly the red and dark berry fruit aromas that are pungently earthy where this element continues onto the rich and impressively scaled flavors that possess a fleshy mouth feel, all wrapped in a long and mouth coating finish. This brooding and very serious effort will require 6 to 8 years to be at its best.” 89-91 Points Burghound SOUTHERN FRANCE 2011 Domaine du Deffends Champ du Sesterce Blanc, Vin de Pays de la Sainte Baume $29.99 2010 Domaine du Deffends Champs de la Truffière Côteaux-Varois-en Provence $24.99 Domaine du Deffends is situated in the foothills of Monts Auréliens running along the ancient Roman road of the same name. Dry – farmed vineyards from chalky, clay soil with southeast exposures in Saint-Maximin la Saint Baume. A blend of 80% Vermentino and 20% Viognier. Old vines, handpicked and Ecocert Certified Organic. This white is crisp with a lush mid-palate filled with pears, apricots, and a minerally, clean finish. Equal parts Syrah and Cabernet Sauvingnon planted in 1978. Ecocert Certified Organic as well. These guys were the first to recognize the significance of Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon in Provence. Champs de la Truffière is considered “one of the best reds in Provence” and Champs de la Truffière literally means “field of truffles” which is actually the case; truffles can be found right next to where the vines grow. This wine has lush black currant and black cherry fruit with hints of leather and violets. A must try. 2012 Chateau La Galiniere Cotes de Provence Rose “Cuvee le Cengle” Vielles Vignes $12.99 2010 Jean-Louis Tribouley Les Bacs Vieilles Vignes, Languedoc Roussillon $25.99 One of our first Rose wines to arrive. This is a blend of Grenache, Syrah and Cinsault. It has a classic delicate, pale salmon color. It exudes the warmth and aromas of the Provence region with spontaneous, crisp, fresh, balanced citrus flavors with a hint of berries and brioche. The syrah and grenache grapes endow the wine with an elegant, aromatic balance. “Slightly richer and fuller, the 2010 Les Bacs comes from 70-to-80-year-old Grenache vines (65%) with the balance old vine Carignan and other red field blends. Also bottled unfined and unfiltered, it offers an elegant bouquet of sweet cherries, dusty, loamy soil undertones, forest floor, pepper and Christmas fruitcake. This medium-bodied, complex red is drinking exceptionally well at the moment, and should continue to age nicely for several more years.” Robert Parker 2011 Equis (by Maime Graillot) Equinoxe Crozes-Hermitage $17.99 “Dark as a moonless night, with saturated purple and garnet reflections on the rim. The violet flower notes lead to blueberry and black cherry with hints of cigar box. On the palate, black plum skin and boysenberry notes are tied in with tobacco, caramel and coconut framed by a broad consistency with good acidity and plump, well-rounded tannins.”Importers Notes 2010 Jean Louis Tribouley Orchis, Languedoc Roussillon $28.99 “The 2010 Orchis comes from 100+-year-old vines, mostly Grenache and the rest unidentified co-mingled field blend. Yields were an absurdly low 8 hectoliters per hectare, and the wine was aged in old 500-liter demi-muids before being bottled unfiltered. This whopper of a wine boasts intense notes of kirsch liqueur, lavender, licorice, raspberries and earth. Full-bodied, dense, opulent and rich, this stunning Cotes Catalanes can be drunk over the next 5-7 years.” Robert Parker 91 Points 2011 Domaine du Coulet Petite Ours Brun Cotes Du Rhone $18.99 Domaine du Coulet was founded by Matthieu’s grandfather after WWII, and over the years has supplied grapes to some of the best known producers in the Northern Rhône, including Chapoutier and Delas. While his father eschewed the agrarian lifestyle, opting instead for a career in international business, Matthieu knew early on that he wanted to be a vigneron. In 1998 at the age of only 23, he took over the family’s 25 acres of well-situated vines on the terraced hillsides of Cornas. And now he makes this delicious Cotes du Rhone that is 100% syrah. A “baby” Cornas at a great price! 2011 Domaine Auguste Cotes du Rhone $34.99 “Two other offerings consumers should keep an eye out for include the 2011 Cotes du Rhone. Made from 100% Syrah grown on the other side of R.N. 7 on flat land, facing the appellation of Cornas, it exhibits an inky/purple color. Not totally dissimilar from their magnificent wines of Cornas, it reveals plenty of cassis, blackberry, camphor, pepper and beefy characteristics, medium to full body and a delicious personality. It is meant to be consumed in its first 5-6 years of life.” Robert Parker 90 Points 2007 Redortier Côtes-du-Rhône Beaumes-de-Venise $21.99 The twin sisters Sabine and Isabelle de Menthon beam when they talk about their 50+ acres of vines in the appellation of Beaumesde-Venise. They are a great source of pride to the sisters who hold them quite dear. Fifty-year old plantings of Grenache, Syrah and Counoise from 1574 foot elevations. A must try Rhone red wine gem that drinks like a Chateauneuf du Pape, some may argue it is even better at half the price. A perfect BBQ wine. Also try their 2009 Gigondas at $33.99, which is truly delicious as well. 5 Also try Clape’s 2011 Le Vin des Amis Vin de Table de France at $26.99 (100% syrah as well). http://www.winehouse.com BORDEAUX AUSTRALIA 2011 Domaine du Seuil Bordeaux Blanc $16.99 2011 De Luliis Sémillon, Hunter Valley $19.99 This chateau is a privately-held estate farming 17 of the finest lieu-dits in the Graves, on the banks of the Ciron River. Native yeasts, organically farmed, and had harvested: back to the future in Bordeaux. This wine is made from Sauvignon Blanc from just two lieu-dits on the right bank of the Garonne. 100% stainless steel and zero malolactic that makes for a crisp, refreshing, lean, yet lush white wine. The Hunter Valley renowned for producing some of the best Sémillon in the world. “Light straw-green; the bouquet is crisp and lifted, with citrus and grass notes, the palate with good drive, length and balance, and zesty, citrusy minerality, the finish bone dry.”- James Halliday 93 Points A debut to the US market. 100% Haut Medoc and 100% Grand vine de Bordeaux, not village “a.c.”. Handpicked Cabernet from vines that were 52 years old in 2006, makes up 80% of this classic. Merlot rounds it out, with a small 10% of Petit Verdot. Rich, warm colors in the glass, red fruits with blackberry and a whisper of bay leaf. Makes for a “dinner table” joy to drink. All sustainably farmed with natural yeasts and raised in cement and 2-3 year-old barrels. You have to check out what aged Sémillon tastes like. It is truly delicious. When this grape starts to evolve like it is here, you begin picking up hints of honey and beeswax intertwined with the citrus fruits. “There is lots of buttered toast and lemon curd, offset by fresh straw on the bouquet; the palate is fine and racy, with tangy acidity providing drive and energy from the lemony start to the toasty finish.” James Halliday 94 Points 2005 De Iuliis Aged Released Sémillon, Hunter Valley $28.99 2006 Château Valentin Haut-Médoc $24.99 2009 Château Soussans Margaux $43.99 2010 Eldridge Estate Chardonnay North Ridge, Victoria $39.99 Margaux that is irresistible right now. Yes, its charming and caressing style is seductive. Nearly half of the blend is Merlot from a parcel on the plain of Macau. The soil is dense with pebbles, as opposed to gravel and small stones. The cabernet shines with fruit, fresh and pure. No vanilla, no fairy dust and no “Home Depot”, aka wood/ lumber. Just irresistible, good old-fashioned Margaux at a bargain in this day of shy-high Bordeaux from the Margaux appellation. “Aromas of citrus with a little peach entice you to start tasting. The palate is light but long, starting with citrus and moving on to a little melon and a bit of almond with a very lively line of acid keeping it in balance, which makes it perfect with fresh oysters or seafood risotto.” 2010 De Luliis Shiraz, Hunter Valley $25.99 2009 Brane-Cantenac Margaux $99.99 A typical savory Hunter style Shiraz with persistent spice and white pepper characters dominating. The mid-palate displays ripe fruit characters of cherry, plum, and blackcurrants, combined with subtle spicy oak and firm but elegant tannins. 95 Points James Halliday 95 Points Robert Parker: “A spectacular effort from this estate rivaling their 2005, but more flashy/flamboyant, this dark ruby/purple wine has a strikingly intense nose of licorice, flowers, plums and dark berries. Medium to full-bodied, very approachable and silky, this suave, very sexy wine can be drunk early on as well as aged for 20+ years.” 2010 Andrew Thomas Wines Shiraz DJV, Hunter Valley $34.99 “Winemaker Andrew Thomas is renowned for his Sémillons but is also a master of shiraz. Bright colour; a fragrant bouquet leads into a silky, supple palate with a core of fresh red fruits, faintly savoury/earthy nuances on the periphery. Totally seductive and delicious now, but with a great future. 96 Points!”- James Halliday 2010 Duhart Milon (Lafite Rothschild) Pauillac $149.99 NEW UPGRADED PARKER SCORE 96 Points Robert Parker: “Dense purple, with classic notes of cedar and lead pencil shavings as well as gobs of black currants and licorice, the wine has a full-bodied mouthfeel with fabulous precision and density. It also possesses a long, silky finish with moderately high tannins, but they are ripe and wellintegrated. The wood is clearly pushed to the background in this dense, full-bodied Pauillac, which should drink beautifully for 30+ years.” E-mail: wine@winehouse.com 2010 Eldridge Estate Pinot Noir, Victoria $54.99 “Dark shade of garnet that is very enticing. The nose oozes dark cherry with a hint of maraschino cherry. The palate is rich, powerful and very long. The flavors begin with dark cherry and a tannic grip that suggest improvement with some time in the cellar. Eldridge Estate is a 3 hectares property on Red Hill in Mornignton Peninsula.” 6 **COME AND TASTE SOME OF THESE WINES ON SATURDAY APRIL 13TH FROM 1:00 TO 4:00 PM** DOMESTIC REDS 2007 Press Gang Cellars Red Wine Santa Barbara County $18.99 full bodied Pinot Noir shows rich cherry, pomegranate, cola and mineral flavors with firm tannins.” The 2009 Pinot is a beautiful wine that is a real crowd-pleaser. Kyle Knapp is the winemaker of this new project. He started at Stolpman as an assistant winemaker and now currently is assistant winemaker at Beckmen Vineyards. Winemaker notes: “A Ballard Canyon Syrah based blend with a touch of Dornfelder from the Huber Ranch in the Santa Rita Hills AVA. Fermented with 25% whole cluster Syrah in upright 500L french oak puncheon and aged for 30 months in once used French oak. 95% Syrah, 5% Dornfelder. Only 85 cases produced.” A great value Syrah! 2009 Priest Ranch Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley $36.99 93 Points Antonio Galloni of Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate: “The 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon Priest Ranch is quite a bit more powerful and radiant than the 2010, but is also quite reticent today. There is plenty of richness in the glass, but the tannins lack a measure of polish. I am not sure if the 2009 will ever be as elegant as the 2010, but it is almost certain to remain more exuberant in style. Dark red berries, flowers and licorice are all woven into the juicy, expressive finish. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2024.” 2010 Le P’Tit Paysan Petite Sirah Monterey County $19.99 Le P’Tit Paysan means “A country man or woman; peasant; clown; in a country fashion.” The wine comes from two blocks of Pierce Ranch Vineyard in southern Monterey County. Winemaker Ian Brand’s tasting notes: “Aromas of black plum, boysenberry, white pepper, garrigue and dried cherries. Palate is focused on dark fruit with soy sauce/umami tones and a brooding minerality. Finishes with big, juicy boysenberry and black plum fruit, chewy, mouth coating tannins, and white pepper.” 2011 Paul Hobbs Winery Pinot Noir Russian River Valley $49.99 Just released and will not last long is the top-selling Pinot from Paul Hobbs. Limited so you’ll need to hurry. Winemaker notes: “Deep violet in color, this lush pinot noir offers aromas of wild berries, rose petals and cola. The juicy wine envelopes your palate with bright raspberry, plum, clove, cocoa and vanilla which seamlessly leads to a long, toasty finish.” 2009 Le P’Tit Paysan Meritage Monterey County $19.99 The 2009 Meritage is produced from three vineyards with very different soils (granitic, shale based and shale and limestone marl) and microclimates to yield a balanced and complex wine. The 2009 Bordeaux blend is great approachable red, but shows good complexity and balance. There are hints of berries with undertones of cedar and tobacco, but the mouthfeel is lively with darker fruit flavors. A great deal at this price! 2010 Joseph Phelps Vineyards Cab. Sauv. Napa Valley $59.99 94 Points Antonio Galloni of Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate: “The 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon is beautiful. Scents of pain grille, mocha, black currants, spices and plums emerge from this deep, resonant wine. The 2010 possesses stunning textural depth and richness, not to mention phenomenal overall balance. Readers who want to get a sense of the 2010 vintage without spending a huge amount of money may want to start here. This is a dazzling wine, especially within its price range. The 2010 is 92% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Merlot and 2% Petit Verdot. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2025.” 2011 Calera Wine Company Pinot Noir Central Coast $23.99 Calera Wine Company continues to produce excellent values in the marketplace. This 2011 Pinot Noir is no exception. Winemakers Notes: “Plum, pomegranate, pink rose petal, boysenberry and the slightest hint of watermelon candy dance from this 2011 Central Coast Pinot Noir. It’s full of boysenberry and spicy cherries jubilee character with nice brightness and delightful flavors of black raspberry and sweet oak. A bit of tartness accents the soft, flowing texture and lively finish.” 2009 Dunn Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain $99.99 2009 Kessler-Haak Estate Grown Pinot Noir Sta. Rita Hills $28.99 With only 150 cases produced, this is easily one of our more exciting finds from Sta. Rita Hills. Winery notes: “Estate grown fruit, made in a style of dry elegance. This young, lovely 7 96+ Points Antonio Galloni of Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate: “The 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain has more energy and focus than the Napa Valley bottling. Iron, graphite, red fruits, dried flowers are some of the many notes that take shape in this deep, complex, powerful wine. I imagine the 2009 will still be spectacular at age 30. For now, it needs at least another handful of years of cellaring to drink well. Huge veins of minerality support the huge fruit, giving the wine much of its pure tension and vitality. This is going to be a fascinating wine to follow over the coming decades. Anticipated maturity: 2019-2039.” http://www.winehouse.com DOMESTIC WHITES 2011 Solena Estate Pinot Gris Willamette Valley $16.99 Winemaker notes: “Lemon, brioche and honeysuckle overlaying crushed seashells and flinty minerality. Citrus and orchard fruit flavors with hints of challah and lime zest. The palate is surprisingly creamy and rich, but the structure and acid of the wine maintains focus. This Chardonnay is absolutely approachable without sacrificing complexity or composition. Another new visitor to the Wine House is an excellent Pinot Gris from Oregon. We liked it so much were also pouring the wine in our restaurant by the glass. Winemaker Laurent Montalieu Tasting Notes: “Inviting bright clear color with a touch of green hues. The nose is sweet and floral with notes of orange blossom, vanilla, honeysuckle and graham crackers. Juicy exotic fruits are adding to the taste with flavors of lemon and passion fruit then lingers with white pear and finishes with a crisp citrucy, almost mineral character, that shows its 100% Willamette Valley origin.” 2010 Chateau St. Jean Chardonnay Robert Young Vineyard Alexander Valley $21.99 Over 100 6-packs have sold! This is an fantastic buy for Chardonnay from Sonoma. 92 Points Wine Spectator Notes: “Graceful and understated, with delicate, fragrant floral, white peach, honeydew melon and smoky oak notes, all beautifully proportioned, offering a long finish. Drink now through 2019.” - J.L. 2012 Donkey & Goat Isabel’s Cuvée Grenache Rosé Mendocino $16.99 2012 CEP by Peay Estate Rose’ Sonoma Coast $23.99 WOW! This beautiful Rose’ was again delicious this year. This killer pink wine was made from 98+ year old Grenache Gris vines. Winemaker Notes: “Strawberry, tangerine and melon excite the senses for what follows. A moment to ponder reveals floral and earthy aromas. On the palate juicy berry flavors please while the tannins and acidity prove this is a real wine that compliments nearly everything on the spring and summer table.” Peay vineyards is a beautiful small family winery on a 53-acre organically farmed vineyard in Sonoma Coast. Nick Peay grows the grapes, his wife Vanessa Wong – formerly winemaker at Peter Michael – makes the wine, and Andy Peay runs the business side. CEP is another value-driven label made at Peay Vineyards. There is no better Pinot Noir Rose’ from California! A great wine. 2011 Calera Wine Company Chardonnay Central Coast $17.99 2010 Solitude Chardonnay Carneros $24.99 The 2011 Chardonnay was just released and we are excited to bring in this delicious Chardonnay. Winemaker notes: “This classic and effusive bouquet boasts of nectarine, honeysuckle, jasmine and chalky notes; even a hint of orange blossom. Lively and bright on the palate, this 2011 Viognier is silky and velvety with mouthwatering flavors of mandarin, chiffon, lilikoi, almond and mango, sporting a bright, delicious, lingering finish. Yum.” Still a go-to favorite on the Wine House shelves!! Winemaker Richard Litsch Tasting notes: “This is my twenty-third vintage of making Solitude Chardonnay. Over this period the wine has developed a reputation for consistency and value. As always our grapes came from four ranches within the Sangiacomo Family Vineyards just south of the Town of Sonoma. This wine exhibits the classic character of the Carneros. Ripe fruit flavors are complimented by a seamless integrated mouth feel and a pleasant long-lasting smooth finish. Enjoy!” 2011 Calera Wine Company Viognier Central Coast $17.99 Just another fantastic spring release from Calera Wine Company. The Viognier always aims to please! Winemakers notes: “This 2011 Central Coast Chardonnay has a lot of personality; a rich bouquet of peach pie and kumquats, a full mouthful of flavor with ripe stone fruit, bright Bartlett pear and crème fraîche. The texture is soft, round, smooth and succulent with hints of sweet oak, and a nice, long, beckoning finish.” 2010 Cold Heaven Viognier Sanford Benedict Santa Ynez Valley $29.99 2010 Fieldfare Chardonnay Monterey County $18.99 New find just arrived at the Wine House. It is made of Sangiovese grapes with a small percentage of Merlot, grown mainly in from their “Santa Maria” and “Il Monte” vineyards. The philosophy behind Il Ghizzano is that of offering consumers a fresh, fruity, easy to drink wine featuring all the sweetness of the local Sangiovese. The modern Val de Vid winery, located in the village of Serrada in northwestern Spain, built new facilities in 2005 under the leadership of José Antonio Merayo. A young and enthusiastic team of winemakers takes care of the winery’s 50 acres of vineyards of Verdejo grapes and also the 150 acres under their control, all planted 3,000 feet above sea level. The result is an aromatic and well-rounded Rueda, typical of wines from the area, but modern and full of character. The wine expresses a very clean and fruity style of Rueda. Melon notes join up with toasted lemon, oranges, and yellow apples. Drink now or in the next few years. HENRIOT CHAMPAGNE Since 1808, Champagne Henriot, one of the last independent and family-owned houses in Champagne, has pursued a tradition of excellence – a fragile balance between delicacy, intensity, and purity. For seven generations, the family has selected only the very best vineyards, concentrated on the purity of chardonnay and has upheld the utmost respect for time in order to ensure the cuvee has an opportunity to reach its full expression. The choices made in blending perpetuate the house style: chardonnay reigns in proportion (fifty to sixty percent). It brings finesse, elegance, richness and freshness. Pinot noir gives essential structure. Pinot meunier contributes fruit complexity. Non vintage wines may contain as many as fifty different crus in precisely orchestrated balance, with roughly twenty percent reserve wines. It is again Champagne Henriot’s task to impart a distinct personality to its wines. These wines, which may be a decade in age and are tasted at least every three months, comprise the house’s library, guaranteeing the perpetuity of its style 2011 Domaine William Fèvre Chablis-Champs Royaux Villages (Chardonnay) $18.99 Like most Chablis makers, William Fevre crafts cuvees at various quality and price levels, including premier crus and grand crus from individual vineyards. “Champs Royaux” is not a singlevineyard Chablis, but rather a quality wine from a number of terrific sites in the appellation, vinified in precisely the same manner as Fevre’s premier and grand crus. “There is a pretty mix of pear, green fruit and iodine hints that merge seamlessly into rich, round and very generous flavors that benefit from a touch of backend minerality. This delicious and saline-infused effort is really very good. Worth considering. Outstanding Top Value.”- Allen Meadows (Burghound) NV Henriot Souverain Brut Champagne $36.99 92 Points Wine Spectator: “Well-structured and powered by firm acidity, this offers notes of glazed apple, black cherry, candied lemon zest and toasted brioche, with a lingering hint of mineral. Clean finish. Drink now through 2015.” “Light gold. Fresh pear, melon and lemon zest on the floral- and mineral-accented nose. Bright and energetic, offering spicy pear and lemon curd flavors enlivened by chalky minerality. Shows a suave blend of richness and energy, with impressive finishing clarity and stony persistence. A more lively showing than I expected for this bottling, which typically displays more musky, smoky character.”- (IWC) 2008 Luis Cañas Crianza Rioja Crianza (Spanish Red Wine) $16.99 The winery is owned and directed by Juan Luis Cañas, considered one of the most restless vintners in the country. Dynamic, edgy and a perfectionist, he has a real passion for vineyard and cellar, to which he devotes his life. This wine has a nose that is fresh and clean with red fruits, balsamic notes and a hint of cedar and sandalwood. The palate is very soft, with a nice velvety feel in the mouth. The palate is filled with notes of red fruit (raspberries and cherries...). It has a pleasant, silky finish in which the balsamic aftertaste reappears. It is ideal to pair with meats; red meat, poultry, small game, oily fish, semi-cured cheeses, spicy dishes and hot dishes such as beans or potatoes Rioja style. NV Henriot Rose Brut Champagne $59.99 2010 Tenuta di Ghizzano Il Ghizzano (Super Tuscan Red Wine) $18.99 Ghizzano is a small hillside village about 200 metres above sea level, located on the Tuscan coast, 40 km from Livorno and 40 km south of Pisa. The winery and olive mill are situated around the tower built by the Venerosi Pesciolini family in 1370. This is the wine that E-mail: wine@winehouse.com 12 92 Points Wine Spectator: “Smoky, with notes of toasted hazelnut and brioche enriching kirsch, black currant candy and dried apricot flavor. Tightly knit and lively, with fine texture and a firm, focused finish. Drink now through 2020.” “Light orange-pink. Mineral- and smoke-accented aromas of red berries and blood orange, with a spicy nuance that gains strength in the glass. Toasty and broad on entry, then tighter in the mid-palate, with silky texture and a suave floral overtone. The toast and red berry qualities come back strong on the long, clinging finish.”- (IWC) 2011 BORDEAUX FUTURES “This is a much better vintage than I thought it was before my trip to Bordeaux and could turn out to be close in overall quality to years such as the underrated 2001 and 2008.”– Robert Parker The 2011 Futures campaign is one to look at simply because the prices are on average are over 40% less than the 2009 and 2010 vintages! – Jim Knight (Import Buyer) 2011 Chateau Ausone St Emilion (Pre-Arrival) 96-100 Points (RP) 750ml 2011 Chateau Beausejour (Duffau Lagarrosse) St Emilion (Pre-Arrival) 92-95 Points (WS), 92-94 Points (RP) 750ml 2011 Calon Segur St Estephe (Pre-Arrival) 92-94 Points (RP) 750ml 2011 Chapelle d’Ausone St Emilion (Pre-Arrival) 91-94 Points (RP) 750ml $749.99 2011 Lynch Bages Pauillac (Pre-Arrival) 92-95 Points (WS), 93-94 Points (JS) 750ml $109.99 $79.99 2011 Malescot-St-Exupery Margaux (Pre-Arrival) 90-93 Points (WS), 91-93 Points (RP) 750ml $54.99 $61.99 $149.99 2011 Chapelle de La Mission Haut Brion Pessac-Léognan (Pre-Arrival) 90-92 Points (RP) 750ml $74.99 2011 Le Clarence du Haut-Brion Pessac-Léognan (Pre-Arrival) 89-91 Points (RP) 750ml 2011 Clinet Pomerol (Pre-Arrival) 92-94 Points (RP) 750ml 2011 La Croix de Beaucaillou St Julien (Pre-Arrival) 90-92 Points, Sleeper (RP) 750ml 2011 La Dame de Montrose St Estephe (Pre-Arrival) 87-90 Points (RP) 750ml 2011 Ducru Beaucaillou St Julien (Pre-Arrival) 93-95 Points (RP) 750ml 2011 Fleur Cardinale St Emilion (Pre-Arrival) 92-94 Points (RP) 750ml 2011 Haut Brion Pessac-Léognan (Pre-Arrival) 93-96 Points (WS), 92-95 Points (RP) 750ml 2011 La Mission Haut Brion Pessac-Léognan (Pre-Arrival) 93-95 Points (RP) 750ml 2011 Lafite-Rothschild Pauillac (Pre-Arrival) 93-96 Points (WS) 750ml 2011 Leoville Barton St Julien (Pre-Arrival) 90-93 Points (WS), 90-92+ Points (RP) 750ml 2011 Leoville Las Cases St Julien (Pre-Arrival) 93-95+Points (RP), 93-96 Points (WS) 750ml 2011 Leoville Poyferre St Julien (Pre-Arrival) 91-94 Points (WS), 91-94 Points (RP) 750ml 2011 Les Forts de Latour Pauillac (Pre-Arrival) 90-92 Points (RP) 750ml $109.99 $76.99 $39.99 $36.99 $114.99 $34.99 $539.99 $324.99 $634.99 $69.99 $149.99 $79.99 $169.99 13 2011 Chateau Margaux Margaux (Pre-Arrival) 94-96+ Points (RP) 750ml $539.99 2011 Montrose St Estephe (Pre-Arrival) 91-93 Points (RP), 91-94 Points (WS) 750ml $109.99 2011 Mouton-Rothschild Pauillac (Pre-Arrival) 93-96 Points (RP) 750ml $529.99 2011 Pape Clement Blanc Pessac-Léognan (Pre-Arrival) 93-95 Points (RP), 92-95 Points (WS), 95-96 Points (JS) 750ml $145.99 2011 Pichon-Longueville Baron Pauillac (Pre-Arrival) 90-92+ Points (RP), 92-95 Points (WS) 750ml $109.99 2011 Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande Pauillac (Pre-Arrival) 92-94 Points (RP), 92-95 Points (WS) 750ml $109.99 2011 Pontet Canet Pauillac (Pre-Arrival) 93-95 Points (RP) 750ml $99.99 2011 Smith Haut Lafitte Blanc Pessac-Léognan (Pre-Arrival) 93-96 Points (WS) 95-96 Points (JS) 750ml $89.99 2011 Smith Haut Lafitte Rouge Pessac-Léognan (Pre-Arrival) 91-93 Points (RP), 92-95 Points (WS) 750ml $69.99 2011 Troplong-Mondot St Emilion (Pre-Arrival) 91-93+Points (RP), 91-94 Points (WS) 750ml $87.99 2011 Vieux Chateau Certan Pomerol (Pre-Arrival) 94-96 Points (RP) 750ml $147.99 http://www.winehouse.com SPIRITS Maurin Quina Liqueur 750ml – $31.99 This delicate liqueur is created by macerating wild cherries, quinine and bitter almonds in fortified white wine before blending it with cherry brandy, lemon juice and cherry juice. The famous green devil on the bottle was designed in 1906 by Italian artist Leonetto Cappiello. If you are mixing adult beverages at home, this is a must have. Works brilliantly with gin, vodka, bourbon, tequila…you name it. Blanco tequila combines with cherry-marzipan notes of the Maurin Quina for this light and refreshing tall sipper. The Dimensions collection consists of single cask, cask strength releases and exclusively numbered small batches at 46% abv. Neither chill filtered nor colored, only the finest whiskies are selected for inclusion. The House Spirits Distillery on Portland’s east side also makes special, limited release rum in their Apothecary line. It’s an aged, golden style rum made from Demerara sugar, but still eminently suitable for all your rum-based drinks. More rounded and laced with sweet vanilla oak spice, with toasty richness, it would make for a hearty-style mojito. You can buy it---when it’s available---at the Distillery Tasting Room. (examiner.com) Duncan Taylor Dimensions Blair Athol 750ml – $185.99 Corsair Quinoa Whiskey 750ml – $49.99 Blair Athol Distillery was established around 1798. The Blair Athol distillery was closed in 1932 and production did not recommence until 1949. Stills increased from 2 to 4 in 1973 and a dark grains plant was installed in 1975. Blair Athol is a major contributor to Bell’s blends. Duncan Taylor Dimensions Glen Grant 750ml – $111.99 The Glen Grant distillery was established in Rothes by the brothers James and John Grant in 1840 and is now among the top selling whiskies in the world, especially in Italy. The number of stills at Glen Grant was increased from 4 to 6 in 1973 and again from 6 to 10 in 1977 when the distillery was acquired by Seagram (Chivas). Duncan Taylor Dimensions Imperial 750ml – $139.99 The Imperial distillery was established in 1897 by Thomas Mackenzie, then taken over soon after by Dailuaine-Talisker Distilleries Ltd in 1898. Production of the spirit ceased in 1899, but only for 20 years. Production thereafter was sporadic yet constant for many years until 1998, when the Imperial distillery was unfortunately mothballed. E-mail: wine@winehouse.com 14 Corsair Artisanal Distilling is currently one of the distilleries at the leading edge of whiskey innovation and experimentation, with distilleries in Bowling Green, Kentucky and Nashville, Tennessee. The first matter to note is that some will question whether Quinoa in a spirit can properly be called a whiskey. Why? Because technically Quinoa is not a true grain, but is a so-called pseudo-cereal, from another plant family. When you taste this Corsair Quinoa Whiskey you will have no doubts that whatever the taxonomy of the quinoa, that this tastes completely like whiskey. Corsair Quinoa Whiskey is made from 80% malted barley and 20% from unmalted red and white quinoa seeds. The whiskey is aged in new oak barrels; the largest in size being 30 gallons, and using the rather heavy No. 4 char. Length of aging depends on climatic conditions at the time of the year of the aging, and varies between 6 months and 1.5 years. For apparently the first commercial quinoa whiskey, this is quite amazingly good. Those who like very spicy whiskeys, especially US straight rye whiskeys, will find it very easy to like this whiskey. SPIRITS when the brewery was only making its flagship Steam Beer, and not doing it well. Maytag turned things around and started making small batches of porters, ales, and (my favorite) Christmas brew. It’s not overstating the case to say that American beer would not be as good as it is in 2013 without Anchor leading the way. In the early ‘90s, Anchor decided to branch out into distilling, and set up a still in the basement of the brewery. This wasn’t a sure thing--beer making and liquor making involve different skills--but Anchor’s Old Potrero Whiskey and Junipero Gin are actually great spirits, and they were way ahead of the craft-distilling curve, too. It’s taken Anchor 20 years to come up with another liquor, but it’s a good (if slightly weird) one: Hophead Hop Vodka. If a vodka is defined as being “without distinctive character, aroma, taste or color,” as the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives likes to put it, then this Hop Vodka barely qualifies. It’s colorless, sure, but it smells like a big bucket full of ripe hops, like the pungent air of a brewery without that bready malt sweetness floating around. Even though it smells like a strong IPA, it tastes grassy, floral, and light, like a gin without the juniper (yes, I know that’s an oxymoron). To confirm that it’s more in a category of its own than a traditional vodka, I asked Adam Rapoport, our vodka-loving editor in chief, to take a sip. As expected, he was not into the grassy palate, and thought the base spirit was “too round.” Or, as I would put it, it just had too much character for his tastes. Whether or not you personally like the Anchor beers and spirits, the company reliably does interesting, fun stuff with its products, and you get the sense that Anchor’s always doing exactly what it wants to be doing. Just the bottle shape and the label design on this Hop Vodka put it in a category of its own on the shelf, and it ultimately doesn’t matter if it’s a vodka, or a gin, or something in between. It just tastes good and ... (Bon Appétit) It derives a ton of flavor out of that 20% Quinoa content. Grassiness from the malted barley is also quite evident here, which makes for an interesting combination. The nuttiness may come from either or both of the quinoa and the barley. (WhiskyConnosr) Krogstad Gamle Aquavit 750ml – Regular Price $44.99, On Sale $35.99 Simple and clean are words often used to describe Scandinavian design, but it also goes for Scandinavian drink, particularly aquavit. Say the word “schnapps” and you might immediately conjure up visions of a sugary, peppermint-infused hot chocolate drink, but in Scandinavia, snaps is something completely different, and it’s hitting the United States. Snaps is the name for a shot of strong alcohol consumed in conjunction with a large meal, traditionally at holidays like Christmas and Midsummer – think big dinner parties fueled by frequent shots of a slightly herbal drink – and the alcohol in question is aquavit. Until recently, aquavit was relatively unknown in the US; the kind of thing you were only familiar with if you threw down during a midsummer celebration with a few Swedes. Aquavit is a neutral spirit that’s flavored with herbs indicative of Scandinavian cuisine; profiles like caraway, dill and anise. In the United States you can buy imported versions like Norwegian Linie and Danish Aalborg, but stateside artisanal distillers North Shore, House Spirits and 45th Parallel all have versions based off of the classic methods of distilling and aging. The first one to enter the US aquavit market, it’s no surprise that Portland cocktail menus are taking advantage of House Spirit’s Krogstad Festlig Aquavit, my personal favorite. Jacob Grier, lead bartender at Metrovino Portland, Oregon, and maybe best known for his creation of bone luging is such an aquavit advocate that last fall he put together an entire cocktail week devoted to the spirit. (Before It’s News) Collier and McKeel Handcrafted Tennessee Sour Mash Whiskey 750ml - $37.99 It changes from plain whiskey to Tennessee Whiskey when we drip it through several feet of sugar maple charcoal, made from trees cut by local sawmills and burned on the farm. This gives Collier and McKeel the smooth, sweet, smoky taste that Tennessee Whiskey is known for. Only true Tennessee Whiskey is put through this extra step. Collier and McKeelis aged in very small barrels that are far more expensive than standard sized barrels but adds intense flavors that are our special gift whiskey making in Tennessee. And unlike some whiskies that have an artificial time table for the proper time in a barrel, we determine when it’s time to bottle the old fashioned way; when it tastes right. Karma Silver Tequila 750ml – $31.99 Anchor Distilling Hophead Vodka 750ml – $31.99 As anyone who’s been following this column knows, I’m a fan of San Francisco’s Anchor Brewing Company. It became one the country’s first modern craft breweries after Fritz Maytag (of the prominent washing-machine-and-cheese family) bought it in 1967, 15 Karma Tequila is produced from 100% blue agave grown in the highlands of Jalisco, where the volcanic soils and humid climate are the ideal conditions for growing high quality agave plants. These natural conditions produce a larger, sweeter heart which is crucial to the unique flavor characteristics of Karma. When the pinas arrive at the distillery they are patiently slow-cooked for up to 24 hours and then cooled for another day before being pressed…(DrinkUpNY) http://www.winehouse.com THE WINE HOUSE CLASSES Use the calendar below to help you choose classes that will be interesting and rewarding for you.
