The Anatomy of a Lobby Day
thera martin milling
What is a “Lobby
Day” and how do you
make it happen? In the
case of a State Senator
such as State Senator
Shirley M. Kitchen who
represents the 3rd Senatorial District of Pennsylvania, when she has
an issue that she knows
many of the people in
her district are in support of and she is in
support of that issue as
well, in order to get traction with other lawmakers, those lawmakers need to see and hear from
constituents that they are in fact passionate about
a certain issue. Take second chances for ex-offenders for example. Many people who live in the 3rd
senatorial district and in other parts of Philadelphia and
around the state are in fact in support of ex-offenders having a second chance after they’ve been incarcerated for a
period of time and have paid their debt to society for a
crime they were convicted of committing.. Truth be told,
many of us know someone who may have done some
time for a crime. Some of those “people” are members of
our families and the fact is, after they do their time, where
are they going to go? They’re going to come home.
They’re going to come back to Philadelphia, Pittsburgh,
Norristown, Scranton, Harrisburg and elsewhere. Once
they complete their sentences and come home, then what?
Don’t they need jobs so they can work and take care of
themselves and or their families as well? But of course
they do.
Problem is, too many potential employers would rather
frown their nose up at ex-offenders who come through
their doors looking for work and act as if a bad smell is in
the room, rather than give that ex-offender a chance at a
job, a chance to prove themselves worthy. On the other
hand, some might say, what about good people who have
never committed a crime and they need work too? Why
should ex-offenders get all the special treatment? I
honestly do not believe that anyone who is advocating for
ex-offenders is asking for them to get a free ride or for
special favors, but how about just being fair? Bottom line,
if you had a loved one who made a mistake and did something criminal and had to go and do their time and then
came home -- wouldn’t you want someone to give them a
second chance?
Once an issue has been identified such as the second
chance legislation that State Senator Kitchen has been
working so passionately, the work in the senator’s office
intensifies as they get their staff to reach out to constituents and supports of the issue and invite them to a
Lobby Day, where they can drop by key legislators of-
fices. In a perfect situation, actual appointments are made
in advance with very specific lawmakers so that the constituents who are doing the lobbying, can actually sit and
talk with the lawmakers themselves. Sometimes it’s almost impossible to get a meeting with a lawmaker in the
middle of the week when they are in session because they
are on the floor of the House or on the floor of the senate,
or in sub-committee meetings, etc and you end up talking
to a staff member of a lawmaker which is ok too. Just as
long as the final message gets back to the lawmaker. In
advance of the “lobby day” very strategically, certain lawmakers are zeroed-in on, as they key people they need to
try and educate a little more on a certain issue, to try and
gain their support for votes. That’s how it’s done. Then
once the constituents get to Harrisburg, or whenever it is
that they are doing their lobbying, they split up in groups
and start making their rounds, going to various lawmakers
offices and sharing key facts about the issue.
On Tuesday, December 13, 2011 I got to see a Lobby
Day up close and personal and about 50 people traveled
to our state capitol to lobby on behalf of second chance
legislation. State Senator Shirley M. Kitchen is supporting her colleague State Senator Solobay’s Senate bill
1220, that would help people with criminal records get
jobs by expunging their old misdemeanor convictions. SB
1220 would expand expungements to help people with
old and minor conviction records. It would also allow a
person convicted of a 2nd degree misdemeanor to expunge the records of that offense if she or he were not arrested for 10 years after final release from supervision on
that case., and she or he was under the age of 25 when the
crime was committed. It would allow a person convicted
of a 3rd degree misdemeanor to expunge the records of
that offense if she or he were not arrested for 7 years after
final release from supervision on that case. There are
some exceptions to these rules. For instance, people
would not be eligible for expungements of 2nd and 3rd
degree misdemeanor or felony, or if they were convicted
of simple assault, indecent assault or gun charges. Expunging such records would allow people who have
shown rehabilitation from being subject to discrimination

based on their criminal records. Expungement would
give people hope that they can turn their lives around if
they stay out of trouble.
Thirteen states have expanded their expungement laws
in 2010-2011, (Arkansas, California, Colorado, Delaware,
Indiana, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, Oregon,
Rhode Island, South Dakota, Texas and Utah. Mississippi
now allows certain first-time felony convictions, including drug possession, to be expunged five years after completing the sentence, (House Bill 160-2010). According to
the U.S. Department of Justice, there were about 100 million people with criminal records in the united States as of
December 2008. Pennsylvania’s crime rate is 22% lower
than the national average. However, it has a huge corrections population: more than 561,000 people are inmates in
the PA Department of Corrections system; over 192,000
probationers and over 75,000 parolees.
The time is now for lawmakers to consider Second
Chance legislation. Hopefully the Philly group that made
the trip to our state capitol on December 13th will have
been successful with the lobby day they unrolled on behalf of ex-offenders, their families and all who understand
that sometimes in life, one can make a very bad decision,
or have poor judgment that will end them up incarcerated,
but how about that second chance?

More faces of child poverty
Would you recognize a poor child
when you saw
one? Nine-yearold Carolyn Latimore and her sister
Aalijah, eight, are
beautiful little girls with big smiles on
their faces. But Carolyn, Aalijah, and
their older brother, Robert, 17, of Middletown, Ohio, fell into poverty when
their parents divorced. They’ve lived in
four places in the past four years including a chaotic housing project where their bikes
and toys were stolen. Their mother, Christine
Allen, works nights and goes to a junior college but escaping poverty is mighty hard in a
recession.
Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter Julia Cass, on assignment for the Children’s Defense Fund, met Christine and
her family earlier this year. Three-quarters of poor children have a working parent. Christine began her adult
life at a disadvantage: no high school diploma. She got
married and worked. For ten years, she was a nursing assistant, earning $10 to $15 an hour. “I was doing personal
care for the elderly and I worked in a lot of Alzheimer’s
units,” she said. Her husband was “making pretty good
money” with overtime as a cook in a Bob Evans restaurant. “We had a little house. We didn’t have to worry
about bills being paid and food in the refrigerator.” But
things changed after their divorce.
Christine’s experiences over the past four years are
typical of some of the realities of the working poor. One
is the nature of the work itself—frequently physically demanding, sometimes unpleasant, often not fulfilling, and
always poorly paid. Bathing and changing elderly people
day after day, year after year, she said, “takes its toll”—
but after that job, she found herself stuck in a series of
other jobs that paid even less: at a gas station, bowling
alley, fast food restaurant. It took her a month, she said,
to save $100 for the deposit on an apartment in a housing
project and two more years to get out of subsidized housing and into her current house—a well-kept place in a
somewhat rundown neighborhood. At one low point she
slipped on ice, broke her wrist, and lost her job at a nursing home. As a consequence she lost the car she was still
paying on. When her wrist healed she rode a bicycle uphill across town to a part-time job at a Burger King.
Christine decided at that point she had to go back to
school in hopes of doing better for her children.
Christine completed her GED and got a Pell Grant and
student loan to study administrative medical assisting at
the local junior college. Through a temporary agency she
got a job at a nearby factory where she earns $8.15 an
hour. Although her hours have been irregular, they made
it possible for her to go to classes in the morning. But
now the irregular job she can’t afford to give up is get-

those little boxes of cereal.”
They aren’t the only family struggling in Middletown,
which has steadily lost factories and population. Through
a U.S. Department of Agriculture program, Family Services of Middletown distributed 26,500 lunches in parks
this summer so Middletown children wouldn’t go hungry
while school was out. Millions of children are not so
lucky in the summer. While almost 32 million children
have lunch provided to them during the school year, only
2.3 million children benefit from summer feeding programs. Federal summer feeding programs have been
plagued by state bureaucracy and need to be simplified
right now. Not only can child hunger during long summer
months be staunched, high quality summer learning programs can staunch summer learning loss which widens
the achievement gap between poor and nonpoor children.
Our nation needs to attend to the summer feeding needs
of children because hunger does not stop when school is
out. And summer feeding programs can create jobs for
cooks and bus drivers and others.
“One of my main goals is to show my kids that you
can get out there and make it,” Christine said. “Without
an education, you can get nothing. I tell my kids that
every day. I want them to be better than Mom.” But for
now, Christine and her family remain among the nation’s
working poor. As her children know, school breakfast and
lunch programs work. Summer feeding programs work.
We have good safety net programs that work when people need them, and we have to make sure every child
who could benefit from these programs gets them as
hardworking parents like Christine continue struggling to
get back on their feet during the slow recovery. Help for
poor parents and children should be protected before tax
breaks for wealthy corporations and millionaires.

Tuskegee Airmen

for his service to our country
prior to a Dec. 8 Senate panel
discussion on workforce solutions for returning service
members. Jackson was one of
the trailblazing Tuskegee Airmen, the first African American military aviators in the
United States Armed Forces
dinated crack down of the Occupy Wall Street movements, protests, demonstrations in their cities. It was later
discovered that representatives from the Department of
Homeland Security were in on those discussions.
Lo and behold the raids all took place at 1 AM in the
morning, they all involved local police in full combat riot
gear who swept in, demolished the camps and confiscated the demonstrators belongings. During the raids
around the country which also included college campuses, peaceful protestors were beaten, pepper sprayed
and arrested by riot garbed police and campus security
forces. Not one peep out of Eric Holder or Barack
Obama about the abuse and mistreatment of US citizens.
Obama is supposed to be an authority on the US Constitution.
Jon Corzine the former governor and US Senator from
New Jersey and former head of Goldman Sachs took a
job as head of MF Global Securities after he left office.
Not only did he run it into the ground by sinking money
in the European bond markets, MF Global was forced to
declare bankruptcy. That’s not all. The firm commingled
their clients’ funds with their own money which resulted
in the loss of between 600 million and 1.2 billion in customers funds!
Have we seen Corzine in an orange jump suit doing the
perp walk in front of cameras for the corporate media?
Has Corzine even been charged with fraud despite obvious ethical breaches and malfeasance? Naw, that only
happens to poor people or non-conformists who demonstrate against the U.S. government.
Where is the SEC, DOJ on this? Why isn’t the government doing anything to investigate this and make
Corzine an example? Why, because the SEC, DOJ, Eric
Holder, Obama et al are part of the problem. They are in
cahoots with the Kleptocrats. So don’t look for them to
do a thing to stop this. Is MF Global merely the tip of
the iceberg? Will there be more revelations about other
missing money. Will other “investment” firms skip off
with their client’s money? Keep in mind this is an ongoing bipartisan program of theft and pillage. Some of the
money lost was probably pension fund money might

Gun Buy Back Event
An increase in gun violence on Philadelphia’s

Starter pistols, flares and

Williams is a longtime ardent and active supporter of implementing

and see for yourself. Has anyone gone to jail for that?
Was there a full investigation into that? Oh right, that
was the day before 9-11 and everything changed after 911. Yes things have changed but have they changed for
the better or worse? Add the DOD missing money to the
billions for no bid contracts, crony capitalism on the
bogus War on Terror AKA Corporate Welfare under the
Bu$h regime, and the things going on under Obama; and
you can see an alarming trend here. Obama came on the
set talking about change, has there been any real change?
Are you better off under Obama today than you were
under Bu$h? Are you more secure financially? Do you
have more trust in the government? Is the world safer?
How is it that police in riot gear can descend on public
space and university campuses to brutalize and disrupt
peaceful demonstrations protesting against corporate
greed, undue political influence and corruption yet
crooks like Jon Corzine who have run the economy into
the abys go Scott Free?! Why are FEMA detention

Credit Union
With all the fees being
added on by banks, people are searching for
new ways, new places,
to do banking. People
keeping a balance on
credit cards are charged
very high rates in the
first place. Gradually,
banks have more and
higher fees for their
services. Of course, the
higher fees do not translate into better service or even reaching a
human being when there is a problem. Banks
cavalierly foreclosed on people’s houses without proper documentation. (Compassion is never
considered by banks.)
My family and I have been members of a federal
credit union for over 40 years. There are no fees
around debit cards or using a MAC machine. Interest is given on checking accounts, and there are free
checks. Our personal mortgage is at our credit union
as are all our accounts. I don’t recommend using a
bank at all.
Credit Unions are owned by the members. Most
big companies or civil service jobs give people access to credit unions. All bank services are offered
in credit unions. In order to do business with my
credit union, I just pick up the
phone and call them. It’s free.
They have Members’ Appreciation
Days with hot dogs or Tasty Cakes.
Years ago, they hosted free parties
for members at a nightclub in Philly
but that was ruled illegal because
banks complained.
In our present economic climate, it makes even
more sense to belong to a credit union and take care
of your fiscal situation there instead of at a bank.
Banks are more and more removed from the communities in which they’re located. They’ve mostly become part of huge conglomerates laying off much of
the local employees. If there ever was a time to do
things that are in our own interest, it’s now. Look
into your credit union. Don’t be swayed by corporate propaganda. Become vocal about what you want
to happen and in November, VOTE!

Wrap your mind around what Senator Levin is saying,
it was the Obama administration that asked the Senate to
remove the language that precluded US citizens from
being rounded up and detained without trial (thus doing
away with the Fourth and Sixth amendments of the Bill
of Rights of the US Constitution). Needless to say the
Senators removed it at the request of the administration.
What happened to the D.C gridlock and partisan bickering? Oh, I see when it comes to class warfare the Congress is on one accord against we the people !! See what
one British newspaper is saying about it all at
http://www.ukprogressive.co.uk/op-ed-does-us-senatecommit-treason-with-ndaa-bill/article16137.html. Oddly
enough little or nothing is being said about the implications of the National Defense Authorization Bill of 2012
in the US mind control apparatus. Now you see why ratings are falling for network news and mainstream newspaper readership is declining, the people know they are
in cahoots with the fascist Kleptocrats.
Unfortunately for us, there is even more alarming news
about what is going on under the Obama administration.
A recently leaked document from Kellogg Brown and
Root a former subsidiary of the Halliburton Corporation
(notorious winners of no bid US government contracts)
revealed they are in the process of executing their government contract to operate FEMA detention centers and
interment camps and they are looking to hire subcontractors to man the centers! This means the infrastructure is
being put in place to detain and hold US citizens. If you
doubt what I’m saying go to
http://dprogram.net/2011/12/07/exclusive-governmentactivating-fema-camps-across-u-s/ and see the actual notice for yourself.
Why now, what’s up? Does the Occupy Wall Street
movement pulling the covers off the endemic corruption
and collusion between government, the banksters and the
corporations have anything to do with this? As we connect the dots we can see ominous patterns forming as
local governments at the behest of the federal government crack down on dissent. The mayor of Oakland Jean
Quan admitted during an interview she and eight other
mayors were on a teleconference that encouraged a coor-

Support maternity care coverage in Pennsylvania
Imagine being pregnant,
having complications or a
caesarian section, but your
insurance doesn’t provide
coverage for your care.
That’s a shameless possibility under current Pennsylvania law, which is why
I recently introduced legislation that would remedy
that situation.
House Bill 1957 would
prevent new health insurance policies from imposing a
pre-existing condition exclusion for pregnancy and require insurers to provide coverage for essential maternity care.
Currently, if a woman is pregnant before purchasing
insurance, many providers will categorize pregnancy as
a pre-existing condition. Pennsylvania law protects
pregnant women in their second or third trimester from
policy termination until after childbirth, however, it
does not outline proper pregnancy care standards.
As of 2009, only eight out of a total of 95 individual
insurance plans offered in Pennsylvania covered maternity care. Additionally, PA Adult Basic insurance has
w. curtis thomas
Copyright James G. Spady 2011
been discontinued, leaving low-income women who are
ineligible for Medicaid without coverage during pregnancy. Because of the current law, pregnant women in
Pennsylvania face many challenges accessing proper
healthcare. This is totally unacceptable.
My bill would make it mandatory that insurance
companies provide coverage for the most basic and
necessary pregnancy and post-delivery care. It also
would prevent insurance providers from imposing a
pre-existing condition exclusion on a woman’s plan because of pregnancy, complications during pregnancy or
a caesarian section. House Bill 1957 specifically states
that a policy “offered, issued or renewed on or after the
effective date of this subsection” cannot exclude an individual from coverage if she has been or is currently
pregnant, suffered complications regarding a current or
prior pregnancy or had a caesarian section for a prior
pregnancy.
If a woman is pregnant, she should be fully covered
by her health insurance. Those who claim they support
the sanctity of life should support this bill. It’s time to
step out of the dark ages. Give pregnant women and
their unborn children the health care they deserve.
Contact your state representative and urge them to
support House Bill 1957.
What’s the best gift you can
give your children this season?
The promise that they’ll have health care when they need it.

Mary Mary gets reality show on WE TV
GRAMMY awardwinning Gospel duo
Mary Mary are getting
their own reality show
with an eight-episode,
one-hour original series
that will air on WE tv.
The show will debut
March 29, 2012 and air
on Thursday nights. The
show, tentatively titled,
"Mary Mary" will follow sisters Erica and
Tina Campbell as they
balance their busy careers and their growing
families.
Kim Martin, President and General Manager of WE
tv believes the new reality show as a perfect fit for the
network. “Mary Mary is a great fit for WE tv. The series
speaks to our programming strategy of producing stories
that feature every kind of family and all kinds of drama.
Erica and Tina are modern women balancing careers
and family and doing it in the spotlight. Their issues are
the same as so many women today, and this show will
capture the entertaining ups and downs of life that they
face on a daily basis.”
A press releases by WE tv provides an overview of
the show: As the popular duo Mary Mary, Erica and
Tina Campbell are busy career women touring the country, promoting their sixth album, “Something Big” and
walking Hollywood red carpets. Music is a family business for the Campbell sisters: Erica’s husband, Warryn,
is the group’s producer and Tina’s husband, Teddy, is
the drummer in Jay Leno’s band. Outside of the recording studio, Erica and Tina struggle to balance family
life—Erica and Warryn are expecting their third child in
February, and Tina and Teddy are raising a blended family of four. The sisters also deal with their large, extended family of seven siblings, one of which is the
group’s stylist, and their parents who have been married
and divorced three times, to each other, and are currently separated.
Needless to say that their lives are indeed interesting.
Special thanks to the Belle Report for the update. Stay
tuned for more details as the reality show nears. Need a
coat or a toy for your child this winter? Please write to:

Communities In Schools of Philadelphia, Inc. manages
more than 25 programmatic initiatives in partnership
with the School District of Philadelphia, making CIS of
Philadelphia one of the largest, locally operating, dropout
prevention organizations in the country. Since its incorporation in 1986, CIS of Philadelphia has grown to serve
over 10,000 public school students at 50 sites. CIS of
Philadelphia employs a staff of professionals who serve
to surround students with a community of support, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life. CIS
of Philadelphia believes that every child needs and deserves: 1) a one-on-one relationship with a caring adult;
2) a safe place to learn and grow; 3) a healthy start in
life; 4) a marketable skill to use upon graduation; and 5)
a chance to give back to community and peers. The incorporation of these five beliefs, known as the CIS BASICS, is the core of CIS of Philadelphia’s programmatic
approach toward helping non-traditional, disadvantaged
and/or underserved students become responsible, independent, and socially productive adults.

Brown to host Winter
open house
State Rep. Vanessa Lowery Brown will celebrate
the holiday season with
two open houses next
week.
She will host her annual
Winter Wonderland on two
different evenings, at two
different locations. The
first will be held from 5
p.m. to 8 p.m. Dec. 20 at
Sayre High School, 5800
Walnut St., and the second
from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Dec.
22, at The School of the
Future, 4021 Parkside Ave.
This year’s events will
focus on children and
youth. The open houses
will offer information on
existing state programs
and resources for Pennsylvania youth, and other activities in which they can
get involved.
The Children and Youth
Committee, on which
Brown sits, is currently
considering H.R. 376,
which would direct the
Legislative Budget and Finance Committee to evaluate the costs and benefits
of early intervention pro-
grams for reducing crime
and school dropout rates.
“This resolution reminded me that keeping
our youth involved in society, and society involved
with our youth is crucial
for their well-being,”
Brown said. “We need to
let them have realistic
goals and help them accomplish those goals, and
not give in to the temptations of gangs and crime to
feel like they are a part of
something.”
There will be activities
for a variety of ages, including face painting, balloon sculptures, holiday
giveaways and refreshments.
The events are free, but
reservations and tickets are
required. Everyone must
have a ticket for entry. Admission will be on a firstcome basis. A ticket does
not guarantee admittance.

One day a shy girl from Philadelphia,
PA, was sweeping her front stoop and
sweetly singing “Summertime” when a
guitarist/writer from Philadelphia International Records walked by and heard
her singing. He was so impressed by
what he heard that he auditioned her,
hired her and the rest is history. That was
the beginning of a singing career that
would WOW people in Brazil, France,
Africa, Japan, Turkey, and other places
around the world.
With no formal vocal instruction, it’s
apparent that she was born to sing. She
was introduced to Jazz at age twelve by
an uncle who had an extensive collection
of Jazz LP's. Her “studies” involved
hours of listening to the Jazz greats, both
vocalists and instrumentalists. Denise
borrowed phrasing styles from Sarah
Vaughan, Ella Fitzgerald, Nat “King”
Cole and Frank Sinatra. She gained an
appreciation for lyrics from Lil Jimmy
Scott, Nancy Wilson, Carmen McCrae
Nina Simone. The early gigs were

Celebrating our 50th Anniversary
The 6th Annual Ford Black College Quiz Game Show hits the Road, bringing HBCU's finest student
intellectual athletes to Howard University Campus for two days of fun and Competition
WASHINGTON-On Wednesday, the 6th Annual Ford
Black College Quiz Game Show brought together some
of our nation's brightest minds for two days of fun and
competition on the illustrious campus of Washington
D.C.'s Howard University. Hosted by actor Greg Alan
Williams (Necessary Roughness and BET's The Game),
this "Jeopardy-style" televised competition left the confines of its home base in a Chicago studio to hit the
road, offering a dozen gifted student players a chance to
visit our nation's capitol as well as compete for scholarship money and prizes. Also new this year is a partnership with Ford Motor Company, an updated show
format with music, new topics and each institution is
represented by a single student competitor - in previous
seasons, each school fielded a team made up of four or
more players.
"We're thrilled to collaborate with Ford to develop
programming that supports education, encourages
knowledge of African American history and highlights
the wonderful work of our Historically Black Colleges
and Universities to prepare our next generation of leaders," said Don Jackson, Chairman and CEO of Central
City Productions.
The competition included 12 students, accompanied
by their coaches, from across our nation attending Historically Black Colleges and Universities. This year's
participants are:
Allen Nicholas, Alcorn State University, Alcorn
State, MS; Rose Ndeto, Benedict College, Columbia,
SC; Peter Hughes, Cheyney University, Cheyney, PA;
Victor Bradley, Fisk University, Nashville, TN;
Sherelle Stephens, Florida Memorial University, Miami
Gardens, FL; Aaron Coleman, Fort Valley State University, Fort Valley, GA; Gavette Richardson, Howard
University, Washington, DC; Joseph A. Franklin, Kentucky State University, Frankfort, KY; Mario Johnson,
Southern University-Baton Rouge, Baton Rouge, LA;
Gabriel Smith, Tuskegee University, Tuskegee, AL;
Krysta Beck, Virginia State University, Petersburg, VA;
Latyra Stinson, Wilberforce University, Wilberforce,
OH
The festivities began on Wednesday, November 30
with a special VIPReception at Howard University for
the student contestants, coaches, university administrative staff and special invited guests, hosted by
actor/producer Mel Jackson (BET's Reed Between The
Lines, Soul Food, Deliver Us From Eva) and radio personality Taylor Thomas (WHUR/The Steve Harvey
Morning Show).
On Thursday, over four competitive rounds of play
in front of a live audience, the field was narrowed to
four finalists, from which a grand prize winner emerged
- and won not only bragging rights, but a cash prize of
$5,000 for the winner and for their school. Second and
third place finalists received $2,750 and $1,500 respectively; with $750 going to the student placing 4th. In
addition, Apple iPad 2's were raffled to lucky audience
members, as well as awarded to the student contestant
with the most correct answers who did not place among
the top four finalists. Viewers will have to tune-in to
find out who took home top honors when the show airs
in syndication in various markets around the country
from January 14, 2012 - February 26, 2012.

The game show taping has wrapped, but there's still
a way for viewers at home to get involved and win cash
prizes. From now until December 15, 2011, the Ford

Turquoise is the stone for the month of December
In ancient Mexico, turquoise was reserved for the gods
and could not be worn by mere mortals. In the 13th century, turquoise was thought to protect its wearer from
falling especially from horses. Legend says tears of joy
combined with rain seeped into mother earth to become
sky stone or turquoise. Native Americans believe that attaching turquoise to a bow would help the arrows hit their
mark. In Tibet today, turquoise is by far the most popular
of all materials used for personal adornment; it also plays
an important part in religious ceremonies. Turquoise was
discovered by the Egyptians around 3000 B.C. and was
used in their finest jewelry and ornaments.

Old Business
This week’s rap from the
Mayor of Girard Avenue,
Toby Rich is called “Old
Business” I call it that because that’s what I want to
talk about, old businesses.
You remember the old businesses, the old Mom and Pop
stores, the family business,
that old American small
business that made this
country. You see, without
that the so-called big businesses that became cor-
Celebrating our 50th Anniversary
porations and got big for themselves would not exist in
my opinion because it took the small stuff to make big
stuff and please do not forget that.
I met a man named Lou and this is not an advertisement. Lou is a general contractor. He does Home Improvements and he is good. So good, he is able to put all
of his kids to work and I will not tell you how many but
it is more than 4. So anyway, his goal is to make sure that
when he dies, all of his money will go to his grandchildren because his children are alright. Now to me, that’s
honorable. He feels that it’s the grands that will need
money to go to college because he sent and paid for all of
his children to go so now the only thing left for him to do
is to make sure that the grands are alright because it will
cost more for them.
Now when we came up money was different. You
could live off less and you got more for your dollar but

just imagine what it will be like 20 years from now. It’s
gonna cost up the kazoo to do anything. Anyway, folks
used to live to make way for the young ones but it cost so
much today many cannot afford to do that. That’s why
we need each other even more.
The family business or mom and pop store needs to be
in order just to handle family business like when kids get
sick or when the old get sick. We need old family dinners, the old rent parties and all of the other stuff that
used to hold us together. We are losing ourselves. Now if
that doesn’t apply to you then forget what I am saying
but if it does .... Our children need to realize the old family values and why we had those values in the first place.
Let’s not get amnesia. Let’s not forget the back of the
bus; the water fountain that was for “whites” only and
the movies theatres where we could only sit in the balcony. Now I would love to have been asked to work with
the Obama people to help our prez get re-elected and I
will work my butt off with those old family values to get
him back into the White house. Help me if you believe in
American. With love, honor and respect, your Mayor of
Girard Avenue Toby Rich. Peace.

Our Christmas traditions
rev. dr. wm. rocky brown, 3rd
We do things in life because they have become a
tradition or custom. They
become so much a part of
our cultural existence that
we do them without questioning or understanding
why. We just do them because it has always been
done. We need to be careful about that because we
can do something wrong
for so long that we began
to believe that it is right.
We have Christmas traditions and custom that
we follow and very few of us know why or their
meaning or where the idea came from. We just do
it. Our story goes back at least 4,000 years ago. It begins in Mesopotamia, called the cradle of civilization.
Here Christmas really began as the festival that renewed
the world for another year.
Here began the Twelve Days of Christmas, the festivals, the bright fires, the giving of gifts, the carnivals,
merrymaking, and clowning, the mummers who sang and
played from house to house, the church processions with
their lights and songs.
All these and more began centuries before Christ was
born, and they, celebrated the arrivals of a New Year. All
people all over the world learned from Mesopotamia.
Everything happening there in the course was time imitated by its neighbors – imitated, yet never copied exactly. Thus it changed its face as it went.
The Northland people knew that winter followed summer, and that spring followed winter, and that winter was
the time when all nature’s green life died except in the
evergreen. All the Northland cherished the evergreen
that did not die. Thus long before the Christian era,
Evergreen’s were used as an emblem of eternal life.
Holly was symbolic of joy and peace, and primitive
people would hang it over their doors in the form of
wreaths to entice spirits to bring good luck. Why a circle? Because a circle is the symbol of timelessness, and
the green leaves of life everlasting. According to some
sources, Christ’s crown of thorns had been fashioned
from holly leaves.
At first, its berries were white, but when the crown was
pressed down on his brow, blood drops turned the berries
a bright red. Because holly was originally regarded as
magic, it was believed that if a house were hung at
Christmas with thorny holly, the husband would rule

Celebrating our 50th Anniversary
Mind body and soul food Diet
claudelle evans
The Bible diet
pyramid displays
the relevant merit of
the four Bible food
groups. Although
we should eat more
vegetables and
herbs by volume,
the nobler tree
foods nearer the
base are more
highly esteemed
and hold the greater priority when planning
meals.
And God said, Behold, I have given you every
herb yielding seed, which is upon the face of all
the earth, and every tree, in which is the fruit of a
tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for food.
Genesis 1:29 These three plant food groups follow the order of mention in the creation account
as well as the subsequent order in which they were given
to mankind for food.
The biblical diet plan may seem similar to vegetarian,
kosher, halal or vegan diets. However, not all fruit and
vegetables are equal. A hierarchy of food relevance is established based on how seeds are propagated within the
tree, plant or herb. Each of the three groups of plant food
are distinctly individual and satisfy differing nutritional
and health needs. We sometimes use the termsfruit and
vegetable loosely to describe plant foods, but the Bible
makes a clear distinction.
The Bible health plan indicates that fruit, vegetables,
nuts, whole grains and legumes are the foundation of a
healthy diet. Herbs, exercise, water and sunshine are also
essential for happiness. Safe, clean meat; meat by-products and vegetable oils are optional.
Although fruits and vegetables bearing seed are superior biblical foods, those plants considered to be plants of
the field are an invaluable addition to our diet. The benefits of herbs extend beyond nutrition to cleanse the blood
and boost the immune system for example. Actually, each
variety of herb contributes an unique service to humanity.
Everyone should experiment and find those herbs that are
useful to them. Many suffer needlessly when natural,
helpful remedies are readily available.
Herbs and a healthy diet can work together not only to
relieve and cure disease but to actually address the conditions that caused the illness in the first place. Some herbs
do provide immediate comfort. However, unlike prescription drugs, most herbs work gradually and in the "by
and by" not just to mask symptoms but to actually correct
the cause of the illness.
Obviously, not every plant is suitable for food. Some
spices and drinks that we have adopted into our diet are
more harmful than good. For example, overuse of black
pepper, cinnamon, coffee and some teas can be an irritant
to our system. However, many herbs that are not edible
may still be beneficial used externally as a poultice. Keep
a book of herbs at hand in your home and become familiar with simple, natural remedies. You will be rewarded
with a higher quality of life.

clearly defined convention. Often, fruit
is associate with the
fleshy portion of
plants or trees
formed from blossoms that encase the
seeds and can be
eaten raw. Sometimes, we think of
fruit as being sweet
or tart and include
such things as rhubarb. Classically, we also associate
fruit with trees, vines, bushes and shrubs.
Based On Genesis 1:29, we have grouped fruits here
on a slightly different criterea:...every tree, in which is
the fruit of a tree yielding seed.
The garden of God is not limited to one type of fruit
tree. Actually, out of the ground made the LORD God to
grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for
food. Biblical passages reveal that in the paradise of God
we can expect to find the fig, date palm, pomegranate,
grape, almond, olive, apple, mulberry, apricot, pear, pistachio, carob and all manner of fruit trees.

"Please test your servants for ten days, and let us be
given some vegetables to eat and water to drink.(emphasis provided)
Daniel could have chosen to eat clean animal meat and
drinks other than water. These were not forbidden in the
Levitical dietary laws. However, the king's meat did not
meet the standards for health. The food was offered to
idols. This did not make the meat unclean in itself, but
offering the meat to idols made it common. The children
of Israel were also forbidden to eat common foods because they were called apart for a high purpose and so
are we. See Deuteronomy 14:21.
In the Bible, wine may refer to either fermented drink
or pure juice. The wines of the king were likely fermented and also poured out tributary to the the gods of
Babylon. The food and wine themselves became desirous
idols for gluttony. Daniel was captive in a foreign land
because his people had fallen into similar practices. He
had no taste to be associated with idolatry in any form.
The king's food was sensual and detrimental, but fruits
and vegetables with seed are cleansing. There is little
doubt that a 10 day test would have revealed this. From
what we know of Daniel, he faced tests and challenges
with prayer. Daniel dined at the King’s table. He was not
ashamed to petition God. Actually, he would rather face a
den of hungry lions than to forfeit his right ask of God. If
we do not ask, we do not directly receive. Daniel understood this.
Here’s to the best interest in your health.

Traditions
Continued from page 13
contained a sacred spirit. Priests dressed in long flowing
robes marched into the forest followed by men, women,
and children. Trumpets were sounded and bards chanted
as they approached the sacred oak trees upon which the
mistletoe grew. The high priest carried a gold curved
knife with which he cut down the mistletoe.
He threw it down to young beautiful girls who caught
the sprigs in a sparkling white cloth. The mistletoe was
not allowed to touch the earth or it would bring bad luck.
The priest then gave to everyone a sprig to hang over
their doors at home and all that entered received a “kiss
of peace”.
Among the Romans, the mistletoe was also considered
a symbol of hope and peace. Therefore, when enemies
met under it, they laid aside their weapons, kissed each
other, and declared a truce until the next day. Where did
we get our Christmas tree and when did it arrive? Giving
reverence to green trees in the dead of winter and decorating them goes so far back into antiquity that we cannot
trace the origin.
The early Egyptians took green date palms into their
homes significant of “life triumphant over death”, and
when the ancient pagans of the Northland were converted
to Christianity, the evergreen tree came to denote His
bringing new life to the world after the long days of winter.
Martin Luther is credited with putting lights on the
Christmas tree. The story goes that he was walking him
through a forest one night. He was so impressed by the
beautiful stars, in the winter sky added by the stately
evergreen that he tried to explain all the glory to his family when he arrived home Words failed him, so he went
out and cut a small fig tree and placed lighted candles on
it to represent the starry sky above the stable the night
that Christ was born.
Did you know that there was once a real Santa Claus?
He was born St. Nicholas late in the third century of
Christian parents, and died December 6 in the fourth century. When he was a very young man, he decided to devote his life to Christian service. He was such a
remarkable person that many varied and numerous legends have been gathered about his life on earth, and his
life as a saint after his death.
Although his job in America comes but once a year, his
work in Europe and Asia lasts all year round. In fact, he

Opportunities of a lifetime must be seized during the
lifetime of the Opportunity
is probably the hardest working saint of all. All over the
world, sailors and travelers and even countries revere and
honor him for he is a patron saint. Most countries celebrate his memory December 6 with the exchange of gifts.
One of Nicholas’ chief characteristics was his unsurpassed generosity. He soon learned how many people
were oppressed with poverty, and he often went out in
disguise and distributed presents, especially to children.
Thus he became the patron saint of children everywhere.
His fame spread far and wide all over the world, and so
today it is good that the memory of generous St. Nicholas
is still alive, for he brings happiness to millions of children.
The true Christmas story centers in the birth of Christ
depicted by the nativity scene. This is a Christmas custom saints Francis of Assisi made popular. During the
Middle Ages there were very few books, and even if
there had been more, people could not read them.
Church ceremonies were conducted in Latin, so Christmas had little meaning for many who attendant.
This worried St. Francis, for he wanted to humanize
the teachings of the scriptures and to show his followers
that Christ also came from humble beginnings. So he assembled the necessary properties, a manger, a star, a live
ox, and a donkey. Real persons took the parts of Mary,
Joseph, and the shepherds. St. Francis arranged the
scene and placed a life size wax figure of the Christ child
in the manger. For the first time, many understood the
true meaning of the Christmas story.
As they stood before before the manger, the good saint
led his people in songs of praises to the Christ child and
from his “jovial singing” came a new idea about the holiday season, the singing of Christmas carols. Everyone
was so impressed by the Christmas ceremony and the
singing of the carols that the rites were repeated year
after year and soon the custom spread throughout the
world.
I have mentioned only a few of the customs and traditions that we observe today. All these and many more
have come to us from our historic past. This moment of
time in which we are living, we are a part of that past, the
past which brings to us the finest traditions of men and
women who have given to Christmas their deepest and
enduring selves. Christmas is an expression of a faith
and hope which for generations have answered death
with a song of triumph. After thousands of years, the festival that has grown about the birth of the Christ child remains an affirmation that all things can be made anew.
