About This Guide
About This Guide provides an overview of this guide, describes guide
conventions, and tells you where to look for specific information. This
section also gives you important information on unpacking and shipping
your Harris product.
This guide introduces and describes procedures for installing and using the
NEXIO™ NX1000MGX server. It also includes sample topologies for the
NX1000FCP, NX1000FTP, NX1000MM, NX1000IOL, and NX1000MIOH.
If the information in the release notes shipped with your product differs
from the information in this guide, follow the instructions in the release
notes.

Unpacking a Harris
Product
All Harris NEXIO products have been carefully inspected, tested and
calibrated before shipment to ensure stable and trouble-free service.
1 Check the equipment for any visible damage that may have occurred
during transit.
2 Confirm that you have received all items listed on the packing list.
3 Contact your Harris NEXIO dealer if any item on the packing list is missing.
4 Contact the carrier if any item is damaged.
5 Remove all packaging material from the product and its associated
components before you install the unit.
Returning a Harris
Product
In the unlikely event that a Harris product fails to operate properly, contact
the Harris NEXIO Customer Service Department to obtain a Return
Authorization (RA) number, then send the unit back for servicing. Include
the RA number on the outside of the return box.
Keep at least one set of original packaging in the event that a product
needs to be returned for service. If the original package is not available,
you can purchase replacement packaging from Harris Corporation.
Otherwise, you can supply your own packaging as long as it meets the
following criteria:
„
The packaging must be able to withstand the product’s weight.
„
The product must be held rigid within the package.
„
There must be at least 2 in. (5 cm) of space between the product and
the container.
„
The corners of the product must be protected.
If the product is still within the warranty period, Harris Corporation will
return it to you by prepaid ground shipping after servicing.

Getting Started
This chapter describes how to start and begin using the NEXIO™ Media
Gateway Platform (NX1000MGX).

The NEXIO Media Gateway Server, NX1000MGX, is a slim 1 rack unit
server featuring mirrored boot drives, redundant hot swap power
supplies, and redundant Fibre Channel connectivity to shared storage.
NX1000MGX is designed to be a platform built for file transfer
operations. An astonishing amount of connectivity is built into the
machine. In addition to two 4Gb/s Fibre Channel connections, 6 Gigabit
Ethernet ports are also provided. This gives the NX1000MGX unparalleled
connectivity to the outside world as well as other NEXIO environments. It
also provides 4 USB ports, for easy connection to a wide range of
peripheral devices for added flexibility.
FTP Server is provided as standard, making the NX1000MGX immediately
ready for high speed data I/O.

Getting Started
Starting the
NX1000MGX
This section describes how to start the NX1000MGX and the initial tasks
you should perform once you start the NX1000MGX server.
To start the NX1000MGX
Press the power button on the front panel. Under normal operation, the
NEXIO server software starts when you start the server and the following
application shortcuts appear on your desktop:

After the Windows Start-up is complete you should see the following
screen.

Low Level
Module
Starts the Low Level Module (LLM). The
LLM application is the core software
component for communication in your
NEXIO system.
FTP Server
Starts the FTP Server and LLM. The FTP
Server lets you manage the transfer of
content in and out of your NEXIO system.
Once the LLM has started confirm that the NX1000MGX is connected to
shared storage and other NEXIO nodes. If the LLM does not start
automatically, start if from the shortcut located on the desktop. If the LLM
starts successfully, the LLM will see other nodes in the SAN indicating that
the Ethernet network is functioning correctly and the SAN’s physical disk(s)
indicating that the Fibre Channel network is operating correctly.
If no active NEXIO nodes can be seen:
„
Check to see if the light is on.
„
Verify that the other nodes in the same SAN are operational.
„
Check your Ethernet connections.
„
Verify that the IP address is in the same range as other nodes on your
NEXIO LAN.
If the physical disk cannot be seen:
„
Confirm that the NX1000MGX node can see the SAN’s drives using
the Windows Device Manager.

If the drives cannot be seen in Windows Device Manager:
„
Verify that the SAN storage system is operational.
„
Check the Fibre Channel connections.
„
Restart the NX1000MGX.
If the SAN drives still cannot be seen:

The NX1000MGX comes with the following rack mounting hardware:

Note the following installation requirements/recommendations:
„
Equipment — Mount the frame on an appropriate rack using the
provided rack mounting and support equipment.
„
Power source — Connect the power inlet to an adequate power
source. Using a UPS is strongly recommended. Connect each of the
two redundant power supply connections to a separate electrical
circuit for added protection.

„
Adequate airflow — The NEXIO frames require adequate airflow
around the chassis to provide sufficient cooling. All components draw
air in through the front and exhaust via the rear of the frame. The
surfaces must be clear of obstructions to provide proper air circulation
and cooling.
„
External device connections — Video monitors and all connections
to external devices should be available and in working order.
„
Cable clearance — Provide at least 2 inches of clearance in the rear
of the rack for cabling.
Insure that the rack is anchored to the floor so that it cannot tip
over when the NX1000MGX is extended out of the rack.
Refer to the NEXIO Safety and Compliance Information booklet for
detailed safety and compliance information.
To rack mount the NX1000MGX
1 Attach the rack rail to the chassis using (5) M10 screws on each side.
Make sure the plastic retaining mechanism is located at the back of the
chassis. Five of the holes on the inner rack rail line up with the holes on
the chassis.
2 Attach the extenders to the outer rack rails to match the depth of your
racks.
3 Attach the router rack rail to the rack mount rail post.
4 Slide the inner rack rail into the outer rack rail.
5 Attach the cables to the back panel of the chassis.
6 Turn on the chassis.
7 Use two thumbscrews to attach the bezel to the front of the chassis.

To remove the chassis from the rack rail
1 Stand in front of the chassis and pull the rail out as far as it will go.
2 On the left rack rail, press down on the plastic retaining mechanism.
3 On the right rack rail, press up on the plastic retaining mechanism.

Rear Panel Port
Descriptions
The following sections describe the NX1000MGX rear panel port
connections.
Do not use wire or plastic ties on cables as this can impede cable
performance. Use soft cable ties such as Velcro-based ties for wrapping
cables.
VGA
The NX1000MGX has one VGA port. This lets you connect a monitor to
the system.
Ethernet
There are six designated Gigabit Ethernet ports on the NX1000MGX.
Harris servers that operate in a Storage Area Network (SAN) environment
use Ethernet to keep all nodes in sync with each other and to perform
functions not carried out via Fibre Channel. Port(s) assigned to this
network are strictly for use by Harris products only. The Ethernet ports can
be used for communications to the NEXIO LAN or file transfer.
Ethernet port designations may change if you are in a teamed network
environment. See “NX1000FCP” on page 21 for more information.
NEXIO LAN—Designated as the LAN Ethernet port(s) for NEXIO systems
control and communication. The following specifications apply to the
NEXIO LAN:
„
Use Ethernet network switch provided by Harris or customer provided
switch as per MPR ABC-0001, NEXIO Ethernet Support Use of
Customer Provided Ethernet Switches
„
100Base-T or 1000Base-T full duplex Ethernet (1000Base-T requires
use of CAT5e or CAT6 cables)
„
100Base-T to the approved client workstations
„
Category 5 or better cabling
File Transfer—Lets you establish a transfer network to move content in
and out of the NEXIO SAN via Ethernet. This is typically connected to a
Gigabit Ethernet switch. These ports can be used by a 3rd party control
system.

The following specifications apply when moving content in and out of a
NX1000MGX:
„
FTP Server must be running on the NEXIO node that is used to move
clips in and out of the server system
„
FTP Server does not need to run on the same NEXIO node that is using
the FTP client controlling the transfer process
„
All Ethernet link speed and duplex modes, including auto-detect,
supported
„
Category 5 or better cabling for up to 100Base-T networks
„
Category 6 or better cabling for gigabit networks
„
Clips can be transferred to and from any local drive, USB, shared
folder, or mapped drive that is accessible by the NEXIO node’s transfer
network port(s) or the Windows XP operating system
„
FTP sites created for a drive, folder, or mapped drive that are accessed
via Ethernet are created as folder type rather than an FTP server type
For media transfers, the NEXIO FTP Server can move both SD and HD
content in and out of the server system.
USB
There are four available USB 2.0 ports. Two USB ports are located on the
front. Two USB ports are located on the rear of the NX1000MGX.
All USB ports can be used to connect devices to the NX1000MGX.
The following USB devices can be used as sources and destinations when
moving content in and out of the NX1000MGX:
„
USB CD-ROM/R/RW drives
„
USB DVD-ROM/RW/RAM drives
„
USB hard drives
„
USB thumb drives
An FTP site created for a USB device is created as folder type rather than
an FTP server type.

These devices are mounted as drives by the Windows XP operating
system. The mounted drives act as FTP sites when used in conjunction
with FTP client software such as Transfer Manager.
NEXIO supports USB 1.1 and 2.0.
Keyboard/Mouse
There is a port designated for use with a PS2 keyboard and a port
designated for use with a PS2 mouse.
Fibre Channel
Fiber optical cable is used to connect the frame to shared storage.
PORT 0 — Used for primary connection to storage.
PORT 1 — Use only if directed by your system design.

Power Button
Use this button to turn on or turn off the NX1000MGX.
Reset Button
Use the Reset button to reset the NX1000MGX.
Alarm Reset Button (only for the power supply)
Use the Alarm Reset button to silence the alarm. An alarm sounds when
only one power supply is connected or when there is a fault with one of
the power supply connections.
Possible Causes
1 The power source (strip) has failed.
2 The power cord is unconnected.
3 The power supply module has failed.
See Chapter 4: “Troubleshooting” on page 35 for solutions.

Bezel Illumination Switch and LED
The black microswitch senses when the bezel is removed and turns off the
super-bright illumination LED to avoid inadvertently dazzling personnel.
This switch defaults to the OFF state until it is pressed in by the front bezel
or by your finger. The LED is illuminated as long as the switch is depressed.
It is located below the bezel illumination LED.

Use the DVD-ROM/CD-RW drive for DVD-ROM and CD-RW media.

LED Indicators
The LED indicators show general status and health of the server.
See “Front LED Indicator Lights” on page 30 for more information.
Redundant Power Supplies
The NX1000MGX comes with two redundant hot swappable power
supplies located in the front of the machine. Under normal operation both
modules work in tandem spreading the load between them. In the event
of a failure, the functional module supplies all power needed by the
machine. If a power supply module fails, an alarm will sound. Press the
Alarm Reset button to silence the alarm.

To identify the failed power supply
1 Look at the status LED on the front of each module. The LED on the failed
module will not be illuminated.
2 To remove a power supply, undo the thumb screw on the module and
push the lock release tab to the left.
3 With the lock release tab still pushed to the left, grasp the module's
handle and pull the module out of the frame.
To insert a new power supply
1 Slide the replacement module into the empty slot.
2 Press firmly so that it clicks in place. If the power cord for the supply is in
place, the module's status LED will illuminate.
3 Turn the thumb screw to secure the lock release tab.
Ethernet
Teaming
Ethernet teaming is an industry standard method that lets you increase
bandwidth when needed or create hardware redundancy in case one or
more Ethernet interfaces fail.
A team of Ethernet adapters functions as a single virtual network interface
and does not appear any different to other network devices than a
non-teamed adapter. A virtual network adapter advertises a single Layer 2
and one or more Layer 3 addresses.
Ethernet Teaming is configured by Harris Field Support when the system is
commissioned. Your Ethernet Teaming topology is based on the
specifications outlined in your Sales Configuration order.

The following sections show sample topologies for connecting the
NX1000FCP, NX1000FTP, NX1000MM, and NX1000IOL.
The NX1000FCP enables you to connect up to 4 Macintosh clients using
direct connect or by teaming up to 4 Ethernet ports.
The following shows a sample NX1000FCP topology for directly
connecting to MACs.

using a single connection, or by teaming up to 4 ports.

LAN.

NX1000MIOH
The NX1000MIOH is designed to support N + 1 MIOH servers streaming
data from Fibre Channel shared storage over Ethernet to clients (I/O
nodes) that are attached via Ethernet. This system design allows NEXIO to
scale to very large channel counts, without being vulnerable to single
points of failure in the connective layer. Groups of clients (I/O nodes) are
not supported by single Ethernet to Fibre Channel bridge device. Instead,
each client (I/O node) is able to automatically and seamlessly change to an
alternate MIOH machine in the event there are communication problems
with their primary MIOH.

This chapter describes how to monitor the status of the NEXIO™
NX1000MGX gateway server.

The NX1000MGX displays general status information the following two
ways:
„
LED Indicator.
„
DupliDisk RAID Management Utility
The LED indicators are on the front and back panels of the NX1000MGX
server. See Figure 3-12. The front LED indicator lights show general status
and health of the NX1000MGX.

The general LED indicators are on the front of the NX1000MGX chassis.
The Primary and Mirror LED indicators monitor status of the drives. The
Status LED shows the status of the mirror between the master and slave
drives.

Each NX1000MGX contains a set of mirror status LEDs that provide
feedback, and a reset switch for the audible alarm (Buzzer).
The following tables provide a description of the Control Panel display and
functions.

The Buzzer provides the following indications:
„
Short beep during power on (system boot up) indicates successful
mirroring hardware self test.
„
Second beep indicates the mirroring hardware is running in single
mode.
„
Continuous or intermittent beep indicates a drive failure.
The Buzzer Off switch can be depressed to stop the beeping.

The NX1000MGX back panel has four Gigabit Ethernet ports with
individual indicator lights. The NX1000MGX uses the Intel® PRO/1000 MT
and PRO/1000 GT Quad Port Server Adapters for Ethernet connectivity.

The NX1000MGX uses the ATTO dual-channel Celerity FC-42XS host
adapter to provide the highest available throughput for Fibre Channel
applications.
The Link LED indicators represent link connection information. If the Link
LED is lit the storage adapter is online. The 4Gb and 2Gb LED indicators
represent connection speed.

Identify and

Supply Module
Symptoms:
The alarm is heard.
What to do:
1 Look at the LEDs located on the power supply modules in the front of the
NX1000MGX. The LED is located near the lock release tab and
thumbscrew of each power supply module. The power supply module
that does not have a powered LED light may be defective.
A grey LED indicates that
the power supply module
is not powered on.

2 Ensure that both power cables are firmly inserted into the AC inlets in the
rear of the NX1000MGX chassis. If seating the power cables turns off the
alarm and the LED lights up on the module that was offline, the problem
has been corrected.

3 If the problem has not been corrected, do the following:
a
Loosen the thumbscrew.
b
Pull the power supply module out of the housing by squeezing the
lock release tab in towards the power supply handle.
c
Gently pull on the power supply handle to remove the module.
4 Replace the power supply module with a known good module.
5 Reverse the procedure in step 3 to install the module into the chassis. If
replacing the power supply module turns off the alarm and the LED lights
up on the replaced module, the problem has been corrected.
6 If the problem has not been corrected, contact Harris Customer Service for
further support.
General PC
Symptoms:
Troubleshooting
The computer has been turned on, but there is no VGA monitor output.
What to do:
1 Check cable. Check the VGA cable to confirm that it is firmly attached. If
the VGA cable was correctly seated, remove the VGA cable and check the
VGA cable on known working device.
2 Verify power. Check to see that the chassis LED light up correctly. Check
to see that both power supplies are turned on. Ensure that both power
cables are securely inserted into the AC inlets in the rear of the
NX1000MGX chassis and are plugged into a power outlet that is
supplying the correct voltage.
3 If the problem has not been corrected, contact Harris Customer Service for
further support.

IDE Hard Drive
Symptoms:
The front panel LED show that the Primary or Mirror drive is offline or that
the RAID status is bad.
What to do:
„
Identify which drive is bad. See “Identifying a Bad Drive” on
page 38.
„
Replace the drive. See “Replacing the IDE Hard Drive” on page 41.
„
Rebuild the drive. See “Rebuilding a Drive” on page 44.
Identifying a Bad Drive
You have two options to discover which drive is offline:
„
To use the LED indicator lights, see the next procedure on this page.
„
To use the GUI interface, see “Identifying a bad drive by using the
DupliDisk3 Management Utility in the GUI” on page 39.
Identifying a bad drive by using the LED indicator lights
1 Identify the bad drive by observing the LED on the front panel and noting
the amber LED. See “Front LED Indicator Lights” on page 30 for a detailed
description of what the LED lights signify.
2 Replace the IDE hard drive that is identified by the front panel LEDs as bad
or not installed. Use the replacement instructions outlined “Replacing the
IDE Hard Drive” on page 41.
3 If the problem persists, use the next procedure “Identifying a bad drive by
using the DupliDisk3 Management Utility in the GUI” on page 39 to
correct the problem, or contact Harris Customer Service for further
support.

1 Start the DupliDisk3 software from inside Windows by selecting Start >
Programs > Arco DupliDisk.

If there is a problem with a drive, it is marked as either Bad or Not Installed.
The Primary channel
is marked as Bad.

Replacing the IDE Hard Drive
1 Disconnect all the cables from the chassis.
2 Remove the chassis from the rack. See the “To remove the chassis from
the rack rail” on page 13.
3 Remove the lid of the chassis.
a
Remove the 3 screws from the top-front of the chassis.
b
Push the chassis lid back slightly, and then lift it straight up.
4 Disconnect the IDE hardware cable from the CD-ROM/IDE hard drive
assembly.
5 Remove the screws that secure the CD-ROM/IDE hard drive assembly.
6 Remove the CD-ROM/IDE hard drive bracket assembly from the chassis.

7 Remove the CD-ROM drive from the bracket.

8 Remove the IDE hard drive/PC board assembly from the bracket and
remove the IDE retaining screws of the drive to be replaced.

9 Replace the IDE hard drive with NEXIO part number NX-DD-SD or
equivalent Harris approved part and ensure proper alignment of the IDE
pins to the PC board.
10 Re-assemble the NX1000 chassis by reversing the previous steps.

Rebuilding a Drive
You can also use this process to check if a replaced drive is working
properly.
1 Start the DupliDisk3 software from inside Windows by selecting Start >
Programs > Arco DupliDisk.

2 If the Scan Channels message displays, select YES to start the rebuild
(copy) process. The DupliDisk Raid Management Utility window opens.
Tip:
If the Rebuild Drives message displays, click OK to start the rebuild
process and go to step 3.
If the next screen displays, the mirror drive is working properly. If there is a
problem with it, one of the screens in Figure 4-18 displays instead. If this
occurs, see step 4.

3 Click Start to begin the copy. Then click YES to confirm the rebuild. If the
copy is successful, the following message displays:

4 If the rebuild was not completed successfully, you may decide to check the
log file by selecting File > View Log.

Tip:
If you know how to use the View Log, use it to troubleshoot the issue. If
you do not know how to use it, call Customer Service and go over the
View Log with the Customer Service representative.
5 If the RAID rebuild fails to complete or if the RAID rebuild is successful but
the original problem resurfaces, contact Harris Customer Service for
further support.
