Warrensburg. Numerous city parks provide places to walk, picnic, golf,
fish or ride bikes, including Blind Boone Park, a lovingly restored area just west of downtown that’s
perfect for outdoor meetings or quiet contemplation. The nearly 4,000-acre Knob Noster State Park is

unique wetlands and several WPA-era structures onsite that are still in use.
Warrensburg is home to the historic Johnson County Courthouse and Museum, famous for the "Old
Drum" Trial of 1870; the closing argument from this trial was the origin of the phrase “a dog is a man’s
best friend.”

Fun Facts
The people (and animals…) of Warrensburg are famous for all kinds of great
accomplishments. Here are a few of the most famous:
Of course, our beloved Old Drum. Drum was a hunting dog, shot to death
in 1869 by the young ward of his owner’s neighbor, Leonidas Hornsby, who
had seen one too many dogs on his property after many of his sheep had
been killed. Guilty or not, Drum bore the brunt of Hornsby’s anger, and his
owner, Charles Burden, took the case to trial. Burden’s attorney, George
Graham Vest, decided that rather than try and convince the jury what a fine
piece of property Burden had lost, he’d appeal to the emotions of the jury,
and describe the love and faithfulness that our canine companions show us.
According to legend, the eloquent speech left nary a dry eye in the
courtroom that day, and Vest won his case. It is from that speech the phrase
“a dog is a man’s best friend” originated.
John William “Blind” Boone was born just outside Warrensburg, the son
of a former slave and a Union bugler. He was surgically blinded, due to a
brain fever, but his blindness didn’t prevent him from accomplishing great
things. A brilliant composer and pianist, Boone travelled around the United
States and Europe to great acclaim. He had a true gift for appealing to black
and white audiences alike, and believed in the possibility of peace and equality
between races. His concerts featured ragtime and blues, but also gospel and
classical pieces. The phrase for which he is best known - “Merit, not
sympathy, wins” - is a tribute to who he was.
A few famous graduates from the University of Central Missouri:
Dale Carnegie, author of How to Win Friends and Influence People
Carrie Nation, famed axe-wielding prohibitionist
David Cook, 2008 American Idol winner
James Evans, inventor of Cheerios cereal
