Plant Shipment Information
Correct Address
Please include:
• Street address of RECEIVING location – No P.O. Boxes please.
• Daytime phone number
• Fax number if available
Shipping Method
• We will ship best way considering:
• Time of year
• Type of material
• F.O.B. point
• Destination
• Please include on all orders the name
of the nearest MAJOR airport and
the city where it is located
Caring for plants
after arrival
Plant material should be acclimated for 1-2
days in a shaded area with good air circulation. Yellow or drooping leaves at arrival
indicate that plants were in the boxes too
long, experienced high/low temperatures, or
were shipped too wet/dry.
Have containers and media ready to plant as
soon as the plants are acclimated. Delay in
potting can result in stretched plants, delay
in growth or flowering, and disease problems.
Before potting, plant material should be
watered with clear water only. No fertilizer,
growth regulator, or pesticides should be
applied.
After potting, grow at the recommended temperature for that crop.
Note: Material dislodged from cells, normally does not result in damage. Transplant and
give normal care.

BARE ROOT PERENNIALS
Grimes offers a wide assortment of Bare
Root Perennials from the best domestic
and off shore sources. Bare Root plants types
include flowers, foliage, fruits and vegetables.
Roots are sold by grades:
#1 is generally the largest, most mature grade. These
plants will have 3 to 5 dormant eyes that will
develop into shoots once planted. #1 is best for
2 to 3 gallon containers.
#2 is a smaller, usually younger root. The plants will
develop from 2 to 3 dormant eyes. #2 grade is
good for a 4 1/2 inch pot program or use 1 to 3
in a gallon pot. Multilple plants finish faster.
CROP TIME
• For most perennials, crop time for a #1 grade root
planted in late winter is only 6 to 8 weeks
• #2 roots planted in gallons in the summer and fall
will be saleable as #1 grade the following spring.
GENERAL GROWING INSTRUCTIONS
• Upon receipt, immediately unpack shipping box
remove the roots and spread them in an open area
to air-out for 1 or 2 hours.
• Fill the growing container 1/3 with clean, well
drained soil.
• Fan out the roots so they radiate from the
center of the pot toward the sides.
• While holding the crown of the plant, fill in the
pot with soil.
• The crown should be visible above the soil line.
• Water the plants in with a mixture of 20-10-20
fertilizer at 200ppm and a fungicide like Truban
or Banrot using the rates printed on the label.
• Plants can be placed pot tight at 60 to 65 (F) until
established, 2 –3 weeks.
• During that time, top dress the pots with a time
release fertilizer at the recommended rate for the
container size.
• After 3 weeks the temperature can be lowered,
plants should be in a very bright area and
adequately spaced.
• As the plants sprout they can be pinched as needed.
• Monitor insects and pests and spray if
necessary.

GENERAL CULTURE FOR FINISHING NATURAL SEASON
MUMS FROM ROOTED CUTTINGS OR LINERS:
General planting guide
3 gallon........................Beginning of May
2 gallon ......................................Mid May
10”..............................Beginning of June
8” (1-gallon) .............................Mid June
6”.............................................Late June
4”.................................Beginning of July
• Choose the container right for your market. Containers can
range from 4” through 3 gallon nursery pot.
• Since Mums flower predictably under short days, plant size
is determined by planting date.
• Fill with a loose, well drained media.
• PH 6.0 to 6.5
• Do not plant too deep, roots should be barely covered.
• Water in with 200 to 300 ppm N-P-K (20-10-20).
• Continue constant liquid feed. If constant feed is not possible,
top dress with a slow release fertilizer.
• Pinching is not necessary if your are growing Belgian Mums.
If you choose to pinch, it should be done from 7 to 20 days
after planning. Always leave at least 5 – 6 leaves.
• Once buds are easily visible, a calcium base fertilizer can be
used.
• Premature buds may be caused by stressed conditions. Too
hot, under fed or too dry.

GERANIUMS
LINERS, UNROOTED AND CALLUSED CUTTINGS
Zonal: Large flowers on plants with
upright and bushy habit. Good heat
tolerance. The traditional Geranium.
Pillar: Very vigorous, zonal type,
requires stake or cage for support.
Impressive in large containers.
Floribunda: A zonal type with
smaller flowers but more flower heads
than standard zonals.
Fancy Leaf: Variegated foliage
zonal types.
IVY CULTURE BASICS
Most ivy geraniums are lost at the beginning by growers who keep
soil temperatures too cold. Sart with an honest 68 degree soil temperature. Remember due to evaporation from the soil surface, soil
temperature runs 3 to 5 degrees colder than the air.
Ideal pH is 5.7 to 5.9
Avoid high soluable salts and temperature fluxuation at the outset.
Not doing so will cause stunting and encourage eodema.
Soil should be kept on the dry side until roots penetrate the new media.
Once established, feed weekly at 300 ppm Nitrogen.
ZONAL CULTURE BASICS
• Rooted cuttings are the easiest to start, roots are formed and the
plants are ready to grow.
• Upon receipt, unpack immediately and place on greenhouse bench.
• Fill new or sterile containers with the cleanest, highest quality soil
you can.
• PH 6.0 – 6.3. Remember to analyze your water too.
• Initial watering with 200 ppm Nitrogen (20-10-20) combined with
fungicide like Subdue (see label for rate).
• Grow crop in full light at 70 –72 degrees.
• Feed weekly at 300 ppm Nitrogen.
• Florel, Cycocel, Topflor, Sumagic, Bonzi and B-nine (each at
manufacturer’s labeled rates) can be used to control height.
• Pinching is not necessary.
Ivy: Trailing habit plants with succulent smooth ivy shaped leaves. Prefers
cooler conditions. Use for baskets and
combination planters.
Cascade: Small leaf ivy type for
baskets. Many clusters of smaller size
blooms. Good heat tolerance.
Regal:
Large clusters of very exotic color flowers in upright,
bushy plants.
4 young plant forms are available from Grimes:
Single Shoot Liners Single budded cuttings are not pinched
but are cooled and lit to induce flower production. Best for
economical 4 to 6” programs.
Multi-Shoot Budded Liners Plants are pinched, cooled, lit and
have several flower buds initiated. Grow in 6 to 8” containers
or 3 plants in a 10” hanging basket.
Plant Pak, Non-Budded Liners Well rooted liners that are not pre-cooled and require cooling to
initiate flower production.
Unrooted Economical for the experienced Regal grower. Rooting requires very exacting conditions.
Ordering and Shipping:
Liners and cuttings are ready for immediate shipping, call for availability. Unrooted and callused
cuttings are available for most varieties. Pre-cooled Regals are available for advance orders, variety
selection for late availability is limited. All Geranium varieties can be advance ordered to arrive on
your production schedule. Growers will require certain multiples and minimums per order. Freight
is VIA Federal Express, Air, Truck or Pick-up.

• Once liners are established in the finishing
container, feed weekly with 300 ppm Nitrogen
(20-10-20).

NATIVE PLANT LINERS
A
cross North America, more and more people
are discovering the satisfaction of landscaping with native plants. This is because
landscaping with native plants has several appealing factors including their historical significance
in the founding and forming of our nation.
Native Plants Save Energy. Once established,
they require no irrigation or fertilization. They
are resistant to most pests and diseases. Thus,
native plants suit today's interest in "low-maintenance" gardening and landscaping.
Native Plants Stay Put. The natural balance keeps
each species in check, allowing it to thrive in conditions where it is suited, but preventing it from
taking over an area. Thus, native species rarely
become invasive, as plants introduced from other
areas can be.
Native Plants Are Interesting. The diversity of
native plants includes interesting flowers and
foliage. Native shrubs and trees provide a variety
of heights, shapes and textures in the landscape.
Many provide winter interest through their bark
or seed pods.
Grimes offers North American Native Plants in
a variety of sizes for the commercal grower.

Sizes and Forms:
Rooted liners are available in tray sizes ranging from 50 to 128 count.

Unrooted cuttings are sold 100 per variety
Timing With a BVD Meter;
Ecke’s “Bud Meter” takes the guess work out of New Guinea Crop
Timing. Look for the visible bud to first appear in the 4th or 5th node
from the bottom of the plant. A visible bud is defined as having a bud
diameter of 1.5 to 2.0 mm. Once the plants have achieved visible
bud, time to open flower can be estimated based on the average daily
temperatures and the diameter of the bud.
Grimes offers all the
major series of New
Guinea Impatiens.

red blooms produce continuously throughout
the season. Foliage is glossy, waxy green.
Flower have a light sweet fragrance and are
borne in 3 to 25 flower clusters. These are maintenance free shrubs on their own root-stock and are

Drift™ Ground Cover Roses
The Drifts are true groundcover roses created specifically for small gardens and combination
planters. Their low, spreading
habit also makes them perfect
for container gardening and
hanging baskets. Sell blooming specimens in 6" pots

with a wide
variety of sunloving plants.

flowered), Red and White (single flowered).
Basics of Container Rose Culture
Fill 6" or gallon containers with a loose, well-drained media, pH 5.8 to 6.3 (remember to check the pH
of your irrigation water too). Plant liners so that the roots are barely below the soil surface. Maintain
night temperatures of 62 to 65 (F). Day temperature of 68 to 75 (F). Avoid wide temperature changes
which can lead to foliar disease problems. Plants need full sun. HID lighting is suggested for winter and
early spring production. Constant feed of 200-250 ppm. Supplemental iron chlelate at 5 to 10 ppm
with each watering will keep the foliage deep green. High humidity will promote shoot development
after pinching, then lower humidity will discourage foliar and flower diseases like mildew and botrytis.
