Our Illinois AGD delegation to the AGD Annual
meeting has just returned from Baltimore. Our
delegation consisted of eight delegates, eight
alternate delegates, our Executive Secretary as well
as our Regional Director and Trustee. Under the
leadership of our Regional Director, Dr. Susan Bishop,
a plan was developed during our delegation caucus
to deal with all of the issues that came before the
House of Delegates. Specific delegation members
were assigned to address specific issues on the floor
of the House. In sum, we accomplished almost all of
our goals.

between ourselves as well as with other delegations.
Our Region received National awards in two
categories. We received awards for Advocacy and
as Constituent of the Year. The Constituent of the
Year Award is the most prized of all the National
awards. We also received National Honorable
Mention (second place) in Continuing Education
and Public Information. Our Executive Secretary, Deb

proficiency in the phases encompassing general
dentistry have been recognized by their attending
faculty. The faculty selected the students who
receive the Senior Student Dental Award which comes
from the National Academy of General Dentistry. The
award gives the winners complementary membership
in AGD through December 2010.
Drs. Benjamin Baptist and Ashley Harrington
(University of Illinois at Chicago College of
Dentistry) were recently chosen winners of the
Senior Student Dental Award. The award was
presented at UIC in Chicago by Dr. Paula Jones,
AGD President, and Dr. Cheryl Mora, Chicago AGD
President, on Thursday, May 6, 2009 at UIC. The
awardees were both presented with a complimentary
season pass to the 2009-2010 Chicago AGD CE
continuing education courses. This award will be
valid through May 2010.
Our delegation was honored to be able to serve at
a time when one of our own, Dr. Paula Jones, was
AGD National President, the first woman to hold this
position. We continued to build relationships with
National Officers and other delegations.
Our reception for our seven new Fellows, two new
Masters, and one new Lifetime Learning & Service
Awardee, was well attended.

schools: Southern Illinois University School of Dental

given to the winners for the clinical and academic
achievements in excellence beyond the expectations
of their dental school curriculum. These are our
"rising stars" in dentistry who will hopefully be
encouraged, through this recognition, to aspire to
positions in leadership, dental education and
humanitarian efforts.

Yes, it is that time of year again. It would be nice to
speak of the lazy days of summer but as I write this,
we are expecting a 73 degree high in July. Summer
brings about relaxation, a break from routine for most,
and vacation time. As summer turns to fall, it also
brings about a return to all our responsibilities. As
dentists we have many duties to our patients,
families, and our profession. I also consider it one
of my obligations to give care to those who cannot
receive it due to medical and financial reasons.
care each year. Though we have many contributing
their services, we still need financial assistance to
support these wonderful volunteers.
You may have received a tax-deductible $100 ticket
in the mail. I urge you to mail it in. If you could,
would you consider purchasing one or more
additional tickets. This can be done through our
website at www.idfdhonline.org, or you can contact
me or Mr. Steve Jambor, IFDH Vice President at 773263-9962 or via email at SteveJ@IFDHonline.org .
Entries must be received by September 13, after the
conclusion of the ISDS annual meeting. Drawing
will be held after the IFDH board meeting September

Here’s the scenario: It’s Saturday afternoon. The
last patient of the day is in the chair. It’s a big case
so I scheduled it late in the day so nobody would
interrupt the procedure. Thirty minutes into the
appointment a nice looking guy walks into the office.
He is in pain. He holds his hand close to his left

looked at the man and told him that I truly do not
know what to tell him but that I think I was getting

check saying, “I would NEVER do that!”

my suspicions were. When she opened the man’s

What happened next: “It’s the week end so I would

Lessons learned: This patient has taught me so
much. He looked nice and was very believable. He
was not pushy. That worked and probably still works
to his advantage. I have learned from a couple of
dentists who were on the Walgreen list that he would

their professional life.
