Accor launches Indonesian brand T
Grand Mercure Maha Cipta to be tailored to needs of Indonesian guests...
Grand Mercure Jakarta Harmoni
A
ccor has launched a new
upscale brand tailor-made for
the Indonesian market.
Unveiled at a press conference
at ITB Berlin, Accor's new Grand
Mercure Maha Cipta label will
become the second Mercure product
to be individually tailored to the needs
of an Asian country, following the
launch of Grand Mercure Mei Jue in
China. While no development targets
were given for the new Indonesian
brand, Accor said it would help the
company achieve its overall goal
of operating 100 hotels across
Indonesia by 2015. The first hotel
under the new brand will be the Grand
Mercure Jakarta Harmoni.
"After the successful launch of the
tailor-made brand Grand Mercure Mei
Jue in China, we are launching Grand
Mercure Maha Cipta in a market
where we are already the leading
player," said Grégoire Champetier,
Accor's Global Chief Marketing
Officer. "Our clients are expecting
brands capable of understanding the
diversity and the complexity of their
identity. To meet these expectations,
we intend to continue the
development of the Grand Mercure
brand in other key regions."
'Maha Cipta' means 'Greatest
Creation' in Bahasa Indonesian,
and Accor said it would target the
upscale Indonesian market through
four key areas: guest welcome, food
& beverage, wellness and culture.
Guests will be offered a "respectful"
welcome with tropical fruit macaroons
on check-in, while hotels' F&B
outlets will serve Indonesian dishes.
Guest rooms will have a "tranquil
ambience", according to Accor,
while spa treatments will use local
herbs. Perhaps most noticeably,
hotels will offer traditional music and
dance performances, batik painting
workshops and art exhibitions.
Launched last year, the Grand
Mercure Mei Jue brand now has a
portfolio of 13 hotels in China, with a
further 14 under development, and
Accor said it planned to "replicate this
success" in Indonesia. Click here for

he CEO of Delta Air Lines has
voiced his opposition the new
ruling that will allow passengers to
carry small knives onboard aircraft.
In a letter to the US Transportation
Security Administration (TSA), Richard
Anderson questioned the wisdom of
relaxing the rules on dangerous items,
which were put in place after 9/11.
"These items have been banned for
more than 11 years and will add little
value to the customer security process
flow in relation to the additional risk
for our cabin staff and customers,"
Anderson said in the letter to TSA
chief, John Pistole. "If the purpose is
to increase security checkpoint flow,
there are much more effective steps
we can take together to streamline the
security checkpoints with risk-based
screening mechanisms."
The TSA said the new measures
will bring the US into line with
international standards. Flight
attendants however, have criticised the
move, saying it will "endanger lives".

gave the island province of Hainan
permission to develop duty-free retail

area into a major tourism destination.
The province currently has two dutyfree shops, one in provincial capital of
Haikou, and the other in Sanya.

Travel spending to rise in
2013 – survey
TripAdvisor report finds that most tourism
business expect rising profits...
US knife ruling cuts through
common sense
How many wood whittlers are left in the wild?
T
ravel spending is expected
to rise this year, with tourism
businesses expecting to increase
rates and generate greater profits,
a new study from TripAdvisor has
found.
According to its global
TripBarometer report, conducted by
research firm StrategyOne on behalf
of TripAdvisor, 68% of global tourism
and accommodation providers
expect to be more profitable this
year, with Asian operators (72%)
event more optimistic. Operators
in Australasia however (65%) were
slightly less optimistic than the rest
of the world.
Perhaps fuelled by this optimism,
40% of global accommodation
providers plan to hike their room
rates in 2013. That percentage rises
to 42% among the more confident
Asian operators, but falls to 36%
in Australasia. This strategy could
backfire however; the TripAdvisor
study also found that price is still the
most important factor for customers
when choosing a hotel. Room rates
were the key decision-making factor
for more than three quarters (76%)
of global consumers, ahead of
location (68%) and online reviews
(44%). And competition between
accommodation providers is fierce
- travellers were found to look at an
average of seven properties before
making their booking decision.
“The TripBarometer has
revealed useful insights into what
global travellers are planning and
shone a light on the areas where
accommodation providers can do
more to meet guests’ expectations,”
said Christine Petersen, President
of TripAdvisor for Business. “With
travellers choosing digital channels
for their travel planning and
research, traditional word-of-mouth
has been amplified and online
booking has become the norm
across the globe. The next logical
step is mobile.”
Other motivating factors for
consumers include room discounts,
free nights and free Wi-Fi. Click here

Centara to add third Maldives resort
Why do I go and open my big mouth?
Sometimes I really wonder…
make an innocent remark about England’s cricket team
playing well, and they struggle to draw with New Zealand. I
confidently state that hotels won’t get mixed up in Bangkok’s
alcohol ban, and my Sunday brunch gets cancelled. But perhaps
slightly worse, in the greater scheme of things; I boldly assert that
travelling by air is now safer than ever (see last week’s Editor’s
Eye), and the US passes a new regulation allowing passengers to
carry knives. Why do I even bother?
I
Yes, in the most baffling piece legislation since the UK banned
people from gathering to listen to “repetitive beat music”, the US
Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has relaxed a 10-year
ban on carrying knives onboard aircraft. Why? What possible
purpose can that serve?
As far as I can see, the only people who might want to carry
knives onboard flights are cutlery salesmen, violent criminals and
Ray Mears, and I’m not sure I’d want any of these sitting next to
me on a four-hour flight (especially cutlery salesmen – imagine the
conversation).
Unsurprisingly, the move was opposed by flight attendants,
who said the ruling would “endanger lives”. Of course it will!
How could allowing knives on flights possibly not make flying
more dangerous? The original ban on carrying knives was put in
place after 9/11. Now I’m not a big fan of over-zealous security
measures, but banning knives, box-cutters and other sharp,
stabby items is surely just common sense, like banning smoking at
gas stations.
Other items have also been reclassified as safe, including hockey
sticks, snooker cues, golf clubs and ski poles. Fine, these all have
practical purposes, and I don’t recall anyone ever having hijacked
a plane using a nine iron. Knives, on the other hand, have little
other practical purpose than to whittle wood and hurt people, and
there aren’t many wood whittlers left in America.
Centara Hudhufushi will be developed on the Lhaviyani Atoll
C
entara Hotels & Resorts will
open its third resort in the
Maldives next year, following the
signing of a new management
contract. Centara Hudhufushi Resort
& Spa is currently under design and
planning, and is set to launch as an
international four-star hotel in the
second half of 2014. The resort, which
will have approximately 110 rooms,
will be located on the east side of
Lhaviyani Atoll, 25 minutes from Male
International Airport by seaplane.
“Our international presence has
grown extremely strongly during the
past few years, and the Maldives has
follow us on
been a major success for us,” said
Chris Bailey, Centara's Senior Vice
President of Sales & Marketing. “We
believe that having a third Maldives
resort, in a very different location
amongst the Maldivian islands, and
with a different style to the existing
two resorts, will give us a very
powerful marketing tool.
Centara opened its first resort in
the Maldives, Centara Grand Island
Resort & Spa Maldives, in late 2009.
The second resort, Centara RasFushi
Resort & Spa Maldives, will open in
March this year. Click here for full

But according to the TSA rules, a 6cm-long knife is now
considered safer than a person carrying 101ml of drinking water.
If it wasn’t so worrying it would be laughable. That’s the last time I
start making assumptions about aviation safety.
Taipei scraps budget terminal plan
T
aipei's biggest airport, Taoyuan
International, will not get a new
low-cost carrier terminal, after a
fact-finding mission concluded the
project wasn't viable. According to
a report by the China News Agency
(CNA), a team from Taoyuan
International Airport Co visited
Malaysia and Singapore recently
to look at similar facilities in those
countries. It was deemed however,
that a specific budget terminal
wasn't necessary at Taipei, and
that low-cost carriers could instead
be accommodated at Taoyuan's
existing Terminal 1.

China to dismantle troubled Railways
Ministry
C
hina plans to dismantle
the Ministry of Railways,
reorganising it into separate
administrative and commercial
arms. According to a report
delivered to the State Council on
Sunday, reported by Xinhua, a
new state railway administration
will be formed under the Ministry
of Transport, while the proposed
China Railway Corporation will
run the network's commercial
functions.
The existing Ministry of
Railways has been plagued by
BY
bad press in recent years. Former
Railways Minister Liu Zhijun was
sacked in 2011 and is currently
facing corruption charges, while
the Ministry reported losses of
approximately US$1.4 billion in the
first half of 2012.
China’s railways are
currently undergoing a period
unprecedented expansion, with
hundreds of billions of dollars
being invested to take the
country’s network to 120,000km by
2015, including 18,000km of highspeed lines.

B777 pilot fell asleep at the wheel
A pilot flying a plane with around 300
passengers onboard fell asleep at the
controls, it has been revealed.
According to a document released by New
Zealand’s Civil Aviation Authority (CAA),
reported by Australian media, the pilot
voluntarily submitted a “fatigue report”
detailing the incident in November 2011 when he fell asleep while
at the controls of a Boeing 777, flying from London to Los Angeles.
He was one of two pilots flying the B777-300ER, and insisted that
the 332-seat aircraft’s safety was never compromised.
“I suddenly, and without any warning, fell into a deep sleep on the
flight deck. The same event occurred twice,” the pilot was quoted
saying. He blamed insufficient rest the previous night for his inflight doziness.

“Little officers or those with too big a belly will be moved to work in

Any officers found to be overweight will be required to undergo

New ‘flying suit’ created for divers
A new wetsuit has been created that
designers claim allows divers to ‘fly’
underwater.
Created by Frenchman Guillaume Binard,
the ‘Oceanwings’ suit resembles a regular
wetsuit but has webbed flaps of material
between the legs and arms, similar to
a flying fox. The concept is based on the winged suits used by
extreme skydivers, such as the ‘Jetman’ Yves Rossy.
The man who tested the suit, free-diver Pierre Frolla, said the suit
provided a serene underwater experience, allowing the wearer to
glide through the water like a manta ray. Unfortunately few other
people will have the chance to experience this sensation - the
Oceanwings suit will not be commercially produced.

SAS quarterly loss narrows
S
candinavian Airlines (SAS)
has posted an improved set
of quarterly financial results. In
the three months from November
2012 to January 2013, the airline
suffered a net loss of SEK630
million (US$98m) - considerably
better than the SEK2.54 billion net
loss it suffered in the same period
last year. The airline's passenger
traffic increased 4.3% which
helped drive a 3.2% increase in
revenues, to almost SEK9.6bn.
SAS also saw a 2.7% reduction
of costs, and
while the airline’s
President &
CEO, Rickard
Gustafson, said
he was "far from
satisfied" with
the loss, he was
pleased that
SAS is starting
to see positive
results from its
restructuring
plans.
"SAS is continuing to deliver,
step by step, in accordance
with the restructuring plan that
was presented in November
of last year," Gustafson said.
"New market-based collective
agreements have reduced our
direct expenses and enable us to
compete effectively in the growing
leisure travel market, with more
departures and destinations." He
added however, that "great deal of
work remains to be done to make
SAS profitable again".
